Plk_Lesiak and one other reacted to Letitia_L for a topic
Hi guys! How have you been doing? For me, these past weeks have been busy! But I found the time to work on “Up until the end” Even if right now I’m not feeling very well as I am sick hopefully it will heal fast ^^ So for the work that has been done: I wanted to improve the sprites of the characters, so I worked on Erika’s. Here’s the comparison between the old version and the new one. I hope that you like the new version ^^ In addition of the work on Erika’s sprites, I programmed a little more but not as much as I expected, I hope to do more in the next weeks! The progress so far: Story : 100% Sprites : 45% Backgrounds : 30% CG : 0% GUI : 80% Sounds and Music : 40% Programming : 27% Proofreading: 98% And that’s it for this update Thank you for your support!2 points -

Himeko has the most h, followed by arthur. A lot of my favorite waifu's didn't have h-scenes, while some I wasn't too interested in had multiple ones. The fan translated version imports ps3 content. It also imports some h scenes from eiyuu senki gold. This means around 10 more heroines have h-scenes (such as gawain) in the fan-translated version.2 points -

Thanks for explaining it, i guess its not what i'm looking for, while i certainly enjoy the eyecandy, when it comes to vn i'm mainly in it for the story, romance and characters, even as far as nukige go, so it seems that starless ain't for me. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS: while the protagonist certainly annoys me to an extent so far, Princess X certainly has a lot of what i'm looking for, enjoying it quite a lot XD.2 points -

It took a long while, but I finally finished Subahibi. And if anything, I'm very conflicted. Not as much with the VN, but myself. Like I mentioned before It's My Own Invention was from time to time too much for me to stomach and that certainly didn't help. Luckily the rest was better and it was just a problem of getting back to it. I guess when it comes to Subahibi you could say it has two layers: the surface level (or just the story) and "deeper level" (the ideas of the author) and depending how well these things meld together in someone's head can hugely impact the enjoyment. But in my case these elements kind of drifted around. At times amidst all the ugliness I just wanted to hear more of the philosophy, more food for thought. At times, just see the next part and make sense of the whole. Ultimately I really enjoyed Subahibi for what it was. The story itself is interesting with utterly fascinating and many-faceted characters and it challenges the reader to think in the most wonderful way possible. Yet, there's still this nagging feeling that I failed to truly appreciate it. Usually, as I look back at what I've done and read, and regret my lack of knowledge and understanding. A truly trite though of course, because without that I would know even less. But when it comes to Subahibi I feel like If I could have had the chance to read it when I was younger, more naïve, Subahibi could have something special. Who knows. But enough with existential crisis. If there's one thing that Subahibi does amazingly it's how it encourages the reader to think and read. My favorite parts of the VN are when the characters are used to teach the reader something. Be it philosophy, mathematics, economy, or literature. Through these scenes SCA-DI not only shows his understanding and knowledge of these subjects, but most importantly his enthusiasm. A heartfelt feeling that something is fascinating and the wish to share it. And not just wanting to teach about something, but to try share that enthusiasm. There hasn't been any other work like Subahibi, that has managed to make me so readily visit library and research. Not because I felt like I wasn't able to understand something, but because I wanted to learn more about subject and go beyond what was taught to me. I've seen people being intimidated about Subahibi because they feel like they have to know philosophy to understand it. But I feel this is very wrong. Basics are very helpful of course, but Subahibi is work that wants to teach you philosophy and how think. In fact, I think it's better to dive in to it knowing less and then studying inspired by it. Be brave and I dive into the unknown! Subahibi was curious experience and I'm still not quite sure how to feel about it. Fascinating it certainly is, in many ways. Like many have demonstrated Subahibi has the potential of being something truly special, and even if it won't end up that way for someone I feel like it has still lot to give.2 points -
Starting a blog about western VNs and VN developers? [EVN Chronicles "Megathread"]
Narcosis reacted to Plk_Lesiak for a topic
Hey there lovely people, I've mentioned in my introduction thread that I'm a bit of a graphomaniac - I most likely spend unreasonable amounts of time writing reviews on Crunchyroll and Steam, writing those might be a hobby of mine just as much as watching/reading the stuff I write about. Before I registered on Fuwa, an owner of a certain obscure otaku website noticed my "talent" and invited me to write articles for him - while I quickly realized that it was pretty much a waste of time and only delivered a few texts, that experience gave me a few ideas on content I could create for the benefit of my favourite western VNs and their authors. While looking for an outlet that would be interested in my writing, I actually found this community and later decided to get involved (regardless on whether it could help me with sharing my compulsive creativity). Now while I rightfully gave up on the idea that anyone would want something of mine published on the Fuwa frontpage, there's still this nice little blog functionality available here. I could use it to produce two kinds of content I had in mind earlier: 1. Reviews of Western VNs that were not caught by FuwaReviews team or any blog included in the Reviews portal (possibly even polemic reviews when I'm done with "undiscovered" stuff). 2. Interviews with notable western developers about their games and all things VN-related (should be doable, considering that they're often one-person studios or tiny indie teams desperate for positive exposure). I know that western VNs don't receive much attention/aren't highly regarded here and we're a fairly small community anyway. So the question is: would anyone here be interested in reading the crap I've described above (if you want to know what my writing looks like, you can check the Steam link next to my profile picture or my Crunchyroll account - obviously the blog would have longer, more detailed entries). I will appreciate all honest feedback, I won't be doing much about it in the coming two-three weeks anyway because of RL commitments, but I would love to see whether there's any demand for what I had in mind or should I just crawl to a shady corner and not bother anyone with my weirdness. ;p Cheers!1 point -

Fal is unique, very divisive, and often not well liked. I think her route is awesome, but that's almost certainly a minority opinion. Lise is simply boring, IMO, and Torta's route is... well, you'll see. At any rate, you shouldn't write off Symphonic Rain until you've finished all three of those heroines' routes: strangely enough, none of them is a good indication of what the game is really like.1 point -

Oops, my bad then. You used so many adjectives that I must have thought you wanted a "destroyer of worlds" heroine Then, I'll second Ange's suggestion of Cross Channel. I think you'll like it! It's translation is understandable, it just doesn't convey pretty well what was in the original... And you're right about that. One brutal ending aside, he's not bad in the heroines' endings. Don't judge euphoria just bc of this start, you'll understand when you play it1 point -

I mean, as far as I know, once upon a time "silly" meant "blessed". Semantic drift is a thing, and sometimes words go through elevation or degeneration in time. Some examples taken from "The language construction kit" - Mark Rosenfelder: Degeneration: Old English cnafa 'boy' -> knave OE ceorl 'commoner' -> 'rustic' -> churl Middle English villein 'rustic' -> villain ME huswif 'matron' -> hussy disease (discomfort -> illness) Elevation: OE cniht 'boy' -> knight OE praettig 'cunning' -> pretty ME fonned 'foolish, infatuated' -> fond Old French mareschalc 'horse handler' -> maréchal 'high military official' Latin casa 'hut' -> Spanish, Italian 'house' So, don't be surprised if in the near future the word 'otaku' ends up being a compliment.1 point

I am not a huge lover of futa, but I dont mind the odd scene, however, when it is futa on man (as does happen with Marika and main character), count me out lol, truth be told I just sat laughing through those scenes, (aswell as the scat, I held skip button while laughing). Heh, nah the route had no romance, I mean Marika had a thing for the main character (I think it was more lust than love tho), but he was basically her plaything. It is why I thought a route with some twisted romance between Marisa and protagonist could be interesting, but there wasnt one. There is a good ero scene with Sachi and Marika at the pool table tho -.-, but you have to go through a lot of unpleasant scenes in that game -.-, not really worth it. The only thing that could be called even close to romantic is protagonist and Mitarai, and that is a bit NTR for my tastes (inevitably with the type of game it is). The game is frustrating though, a true route where you bring down Maria and maybe expose the atrocities of the household would have been good. But nope, its a h-game the bad guys must always win lol.1 point -

Hmm, but don't get me wrong, I love dark and disturbing stories, especially when they manage to fit in between some endearingly cute moments. The reason I want to try something different is not so much because I didn't like the atmosphere, but just to keep it fresh, considering the VN is pretty long Anyway, I get the general idea I think. Thank you for your suggestions!1 point -

Beyond having similar themes, the situation in Yumiko's route is also the same. It isn't really dark, and it's a nice, cute route, but the situation is very similar to Makina's. You may prefer Sachi or Michiru, whose routes are wholly different to Makina's.1 point -

I agree completely, the anime actually did this much better IMO (but they also had to connect of the routes together and leave space for sequels). I think most routes in Kajitsu have a bit of this problem, while the common route is consistently intriguing and very fun to read, the endings tend to be over-the-top and overly convoluted. They're enjoyable, but not necessarily hold up if you over-analyse them. Amane route is my favourite, but after Makina I would maybe suggest Yumiko, as a change of pace?1 point -

Not all characters have an H-Scene. This is not strange when you consider there are at least 50 or 60 of them. I estimate about 20 have one. Generally, at least 2. H-Scenes take a while until they happen with non-Himiko. If it goes anything like mine went (and it can go differently, because you can tackle world conquering in any order), you'll have most of the World under your control before the H-Scenes start appearing. Also, here's an image:1 point -
Well, Amane and Makina are written by the same author, so maybe it's a good idea to read something else between them.1 point

Nothing particular, just a random short script I wrote a while ago at night, while being completely intoxicated (read: drunk as fuck). It turned out to be a lot more promising I expected at first, so I thought like sharing it, you know - for research purposes. Might or might not be connected with the things I work on, who knows. I presume it still does connect with the story of that one city, as in "THE CITY". The only one... left/known/whatever? Pick your choice. === - I CAN'T KILL YOU... BUT I CAN STILL LOCK YOU UP IN A PLACE LIKE THIS. - What if I try to escape? - MEANINGLESS. I MADE SURE NO ONE CAN ESCAPE. THEREFORE, YOU WILL STUDY ALICE. - What if I'll refuse? - YOU WON'T. YOU'RE A LIVE BEING. YOU NEED TO EAT AND DRINK TO SURVIVE. YOU'RE COMPLETELY DEPENDANT ON MY WILLINGNESS TO SUPPLY YOU WITH FOOD. - ... - I WILL DO SO, BUT ONLY IF YOU'RE CAPABLE TO LEARN ON HOW TO OPERATE ALICE. - WE'RE DEPENDANT ON EACH OTHER. I CAN TAKE CARE OF MYSELF, BUT TO DO SO, I NEED ALICE. I CAN'T FIX, NOR MAINTAIN ALICE. ONLY HUMANS ARE CAPABLE OF THAT. IF YOU WON'T BE WILLING TO LEARN ON HOW TO OPERATE ALICE, I WILL LET YOU STARVE TO DEATH. EITHER THAT, OR YOU WILL DIE FROM DEHYDRATION. - you know there are military drones, wandering through the city? Aren't you afraid? - I COULD ASK THE SAME. IT CANNOT BE HELPED. I'M INCAPABLE TO DEFEND MYSELF THROUGH THE USE OF FORCE. BUT I KNOW WHERE YOU CAN FIND FIREARMS. - You... you want me to defend you? - I WANT YOU TO DEFEND BOTH OF US. - And what if I'll decide to put a bullet through your hull? - I'M AFRAID THAT WON'T BE POSSIBLE. ALL WEAPONS WITHIN THE DESIGNATED AREA ARE CONTROLLED BY THE CITY'S SYSTEM. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO USE THEM AGAINST MAINTENANCE DRONES AND CIVIL-DESIGNATED MACHINES, BUT THEY CAN BE USED FOR SELF DEFENCE AGAINST OTHER THREATS. - You know I could just let the military drones destroy you and escape? - YOU WON'T ALLOW THAT. IT'S BECAUSE... I CAN PROVE HIGHLY USEFUL. - I have no need for a rusty maintenance robot. - I'M AN ALPHA CLASS MAINTENANCE DRONE. - Alpha class? - I HAVE NEARLY UNRESTRICTED ACCESS TO ALL THE AREAS WITHIN THE CITY. I CAN OPEN NEARLY ALL THE DOORS AND LOCKS. I'M CAPABLE TO CONTROL CERTAIN MECHANISMS AND SYSTEMS. MY PERSONAL DATABASE STORES INFORMATION THAT CAN BE OF USE TO YOU. - ... -I HAVE A MAP OF THIS CITY. I ALSO KNOW YOU WANT TO LEAVE. I CAN HELP YOU ESCAPE. - Y-you can? - YES. WITH ALL MEANS. - What if I still won't be able to learn on how to operate Alice? I'm not an engineer, you know. just a civilian. - YOU'RE A HUMAN FIRST AND FOREMOST. THERE'S NOTHING A HUMAN CANNOT LEARN, NOR UNDERSTAND, PROVIDED THEY ARE GIVEN ENOUGH TIME. - And if it does take a lot of time? - MY FATE IS ALREADY SEALED. I'M FOREVER BOUND TO THIS CITY. MY PERCEPTION OF TIME IS DIFFERENT. YOURS IS LIMITED, THOUGH. [I'm really fucked.] [Guess I have no other choice, than to do what that robot wants.] - YOU WILL HELP ME REGAIN MY FULL POTENTIAL AND I WILL HELP YOU ESCAPE THIS CITY. - Uh huh... but only if you'll bring me the best kind of food! I haven't had a chocolate candy bar in ages... I'll learn how to operate Alice, so you can patch yourself up. Then you'll lead me out of this hellhole. I don't really care about what you want afterwards. - I CAN WORK THIS OUT. DEAL? - Yeah, deal. - EXCELLENT. YOU WILL NOT REGRET YOUR CHOICE. *** - Say... you didn't really plan on locking me up, did you? - LOCKING YOU UP WOULD PROVE DETRIMENTAL TO OUR SURVIVAL. REGARDLESS, YOU WOULDN'T HAVE MUCH OF A CHOICE, EITHER WAY. ALL PROBABLE OUTCOMES PROVED TO BE FAR WORSE THAN STAYING HERE. - Are you hitting on me? - I'M NOT INTERESTED IN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH ORGANIC BEINGS. - Yet you're unable to shut up. - ...I CAN DO THAT. I'M ONLY CURIOUS HOW LONG WILL YOU MANAGE TO STAND COMPLETE SILENCE. - How altruistic. - I WAS ENGINEERED THAT WAY. *** - T-this body... seems fairly different. I feel... different. I... I like it. [I can't believe it. It did manage to swap.] - H-hey... may I ask you a question? - Yes? - We talked so much... but through all that time, you didn't actually introduce yourself. Who are you? - I'm an alpha class maintenance drone. My codename is A-Ariadne. - Ariadne? That's your name? - Yes. - You're a girl? - I don't understand. - Are you male or female? - I don't think it's possible to classify me that way. - Why? - And you... what would you like me to be? - T-that body of yours... is actually female, too. You know? - I see... it does feel strange, indeed. - That's not what I meant. - Then, would you like me to register myself as a female-type bioroid? - Bioroid? - This is a B-class bioroid body. At least, that's what I managed to retrieve from it's hardware data. It seemed to host a different presence in the past, but it's gone now. The body's vacant, which means I can take it. - You like it? - What can I say... it seems a lot weaker than my previous shell in terms of physical capabilities, but it's more advanced, performance-wise. I feel this might prove to be more useful in a longer run. - I see... - So? I won't mind either way. - You won't? - Does it matter? - I guess it doesn't. - Presumably, you're more comfortable with having a female companion. - I guess that's what I want. I don't really... trust guys. - I see... Then I'll become a female. - W-wait! What do you mean "become a female"?! - My previous shell was fully mechanic. A personality can only stretch as far as it's body allows it to, doesn't it? - I guess so. - It's quite different now. I can supply myself with the missing data from Alice. It might take a while, though. Can you ensure my safety for the time being? - It's not like anything's coming down here. - Still, it'd be nice for you to provide assistance. - Okay, okay. It's not like I was planning to walk away... or anything. - I'll start then. Let me warn you, though - until data transfer is complete, I might seem completely lifeless. - Fine. - ... - Is there something wrong? - Your voice changed. - It did? - It's like you're talking in a completely different manner now, aside from the sound itself. - It's probably the body. I can't help myself. - You suddenly became a lot nicer. - I'm not doing this on purpose. - Yeah, sure. [Those ears and tail, though. Fuuuck, too cute.]1 point

I know what you mean... but the classic yandere heroines are pretty rare outside of nukige, because they make it difficult to make multiheroine stories. I mean, Kagura from Trouble@Vampire applies... but that psychotic love isn't directed at the protagonist... it's toward her little sister Kaguya. However, the 'classic yandere' request was for the untranslated. For translated, you are pretty much stuck with Kagome... so far no one has translated any of the really good yandere stuff outside of nukige. I think Cao Cao from Koihime Musou is actually far less fitting... she's not the type that attaches at all. Other people attach to her and she uses them, lol.1 point -

Kagome from Comyu is aggressive, cruel, pragmatic... but she loves the protagonist. Untranslated Akane is a 'classical' yandere... in the sense of the heroine from Mirai Nikki (manga/anime). Oddly, there just aren't that many classical yandere out there in normal VNs. There are a lot of borderline girls and ones who take yandere in another direction, but there just aren't that many of that type out there. Takatou Sayoko from Gun Knight Girl is of this type... Okada Iori from Kikan Bakumatsu Ibun Last Cavalier (though really it just combines her inherently homicidal nature with a protective love for the protagonist...)1 point -

As one, who has read G-senjou prior, i just can't not point out how similiar the VNs are (i was kinda expecting it anyway, since it's from Akabeisoft aswell). I still prefer G-senjou, though. Battle of wits between 2 archenemies with some mystery elements and in Sharin, a young man who struggles with the ideas of society are both really appealing to me, but the former is just what i love the most. Can't decide if Natsumi or the last spoiler heroine is the best I rated Sharin 9/10, 10/10 for G-senjou.1 point -

I thought Princess X was gonna be a nice change of pace. A chance to collect some momusu waifus. I was wrong and so wrong. The protagonist is an unlikable boob. Sevierly rasist and just rapes all the monster girls. I like to think I can deal with a lot of fetishes. But it;s not even the kind of rape you see in something like Rance. He just wants them to suffer. Most of the endings are bad endings. 1 of the heroes has an only netorare ending. Some of the heroines are tortured just for the sake of it. Why, why didn't I read the fucking tags. I got tricked by the monster girl boobies. You can still save yourself...........1 point

If you read KnS you will want to read KnS2 after and that one is a lot darker than KnS and more depressing overall too. I loved the ending (the true ending) but I'm sure is not for everyone. Also you need to read cartagra before reading KnS.1 point

@Nusselt As a fact, I read KnS after I have finished Senjou no Maou, and I have to say: even though KnS does not focus in a "sherlock Holmes vs Moriarty" story, you can really enjoy the mistery behind the true story ending. As a mistery novel fan, I can assure you it will be worth the effort and time.1 point -
Well, everybody said what I would say. KnS is not depressing, although very gory, which may be a problem for some players. Some scenes and endings can be considered depressing, but in the context of the story are acceptable. What I highly recommend is that you read Cartagra before KnS. Although their stories are not directly related, there are a lot of information you'll only get if you've read Cartagra. Also, you're going to get some spoilers if you read it after KnS. Cartagra is an even more important read before KnS2, due to the many references and characters who play major roles in this sequel. Btw, if you like KnS, read Swan Song. It is very dark and depressing1 point
-
I doesn't have anything to do with how dark it is, but if you decide to go with Kara no Shoujo, it is a little bit harsh when it comes to bad ends, so just be aware that if a character tells you to do stuff regarding the investigation, it might be not as optional as you think.1 point

I wouldn't call KnS dark, but rather intense. I highly recommend it, I rarely enjoy gore but I do enjoy the mistery a lot. Cartagra, as someone mentioned above, it's a standalone VN located chronologically before KnS events.1 point -
Kara No Shoujo is less emotionally dark, and more dark in the sense of psychological horror. It relies heavily on the shock factor. There is a lot of blood/gore. It is disturbing in that there is a lot of cruel violence. The true ending is really good though. It won't leave any lasting impact. To be honest Narcissu is the only VN that still impacts me a little bit. I like to think I have a little more empathy nowadays! Most endings are bad endings, and this game is nearly impossible to play without a walkthrough. Despite this the storyline is very good. One of the best murder-mysteries I read. Cartagra is not really a prequel (Each game is standalone). Though the kind of mystery you find in G-Senjou is fundamentally different from you experience in Kara No Shoujo. Don't go in expecting that. Despite this, this is a solid 8.5/10 While not as dark, bloody or violent, Umineko has the kind of masterful storytelling, that you will probably enjoy. Wait for Sharin No Kuni, as a HD version is going to be re-released soon1 point
-
I wouldn't call Kara no shoujo depressing. Frustrating at most (if you are going to play it without a guide, because the choices can be pretty random). All in all, everything about it is pretty dark (except of the school uniforms). It does have some romantic atmosphere from time to time, and thanks to a certain heroine, a bit of comedy aswell. Then would come the frustrating part if you hadn't managed to do what you wanted and just get a game over screen. That's probably a part of why i never finished it. People told me to play Cartagara first, since it takes place before Kara no shoujo, so if i ever get back to it, i'd read that first, just like you should.1 point

KnS is certainly darker than G-senjou. Not the darkest VN you can find in the market, but there is lots of death, and even characters you might like and get attached to, well... without spoilering anything, let's just say that no one is actually safe in the game. The game is not 100% depressing though, especially at the beginning there's some comedy to lighten it up, and overall it's a very very good story with amazing art and soundtrack. I don't know, really, it might be a little too much for you judging for your description, but it's hard to tell without actually knowing you. Sharin no Kuni is definitely much lighter, at least in the sense that there's a lot of hope to be found there.1 point -
