How does one develop editing skills specific to VNs?
Nandemonai and 5 others reacted to Clephas for a topic
Mmm... Decay or Poltroon would probably be better advisors on this matter. However, I can give you a few pieces of advice. First, unify your terminology and name-spelling... when translating from Japanese to English, this is always an issue, especially with fantasy and sci-fi types. As an example... the term 汚染獣 (romaji: osenjuu) from the anime Koukaku no Regios. First, ask your translator how many variations on the translation of the jargon term he can think of, then figure out if you can find or create a term that fits and doesn't feel awkward to you when reading it. In this case, we picked 'Taint Beasts', though the official translations picked something different. Second, decide whether you are going to keep honorifics. This issue tends to make purists go bonkers... but a good rule of thumb is, if it is based in Japan, keep them. If it isn't based in Japan or an oriental culture, don't. Another issue... one that is probably going to pop up a lot. Line consistency and line awkwardness. A lot of translators don't take context into account when translating, so if you find inconsistencies between lines in a scene, mark it down and ask for clarification. Many translators also go to insane lengths to keep the entire meaning of a sentence in every last detail, including the 'rhythm' in their translation. Unfortunately, this frequently results in grammatical abominations. Be prepared for a fight with your translator if he is attached to his work, because no one likes reading awkward lines, but no translator likes to see meaning cut out of a sentence. Often, simply rewording the sentence is sufficient (I dunno how many times, as a translation-checker, I've simply rearranged a sentence to make it sound like real English), but sometimes you really do have to rewrite the line because it just makes no grammatical sense (ask any editor on a fansub project and they'll probably nod to this). Don't be afraid to break up run-on sentences. Japanese allows for much longer strings of concepts in a single sentence than English does, and I've actually run across sentences in Japanese that have gone on for five or six lines before concluding. The natural tendency for a translator is going to be to try to replicate this in English, but that won't work *states this bluntly* If it looks like a stream of thought is continuing across multiple lines, it is perfectly fine to rearrange the order of them, if the new order works better. Readability is important. Implied subjects pop up a lot in Japanese... and as a result, you'll probably come across a lot of lines where the translator might have completely misunderstood who the subject of the sentence was, because he failed to take the entire context of the series of lines into consideration. If this occurs, ask your translator to go over it again, pointing out inconsistencies that bothered you. Some translators are too stone-head stubborn to do this, but a good translator will be willing to accept they might have made a mistake. Last of all... my condolences for picking one of the most thankless jobs in the fantranslation community. Edit: One nasty little secret translators tend to use any excuse not to speak about... Edit2: There is a lot more that I could say, but this is all from the two perspectives I've experienced most often, translator and translation-checker. With anime it isn't so bad, but with VNs, the difficulty level for an editor increases exponentially simply because you have to keep track of so many different factors. Also... how is your prose? That is going to be important when dealing with narrative. I don't know how many editors I came across over the years that could write lines that were perfect grammatically but were pure s*** as prose... the same for translators.6 points -

I created an account a while ago but I'm only getting round to actually posting now. I'm usually a bit shy when it comes to being active on a forum although I've lurked here for a while, follow VNTS and have been aware of Fuwanovel for quite some time. I admire this community and I'd love to try and be an active part of it! My interest in VNs only seems to grow, having started ~3 years ago. I adore, to name five, Saya no Uta, Tsukihime, Subahibi, Chaos;Head and Symphonic Rain. I think I like a relatively wide range of VNs, although I have barely even scratched the surface! I've been delving into and enjoying both a bit of yuri and otome recently. Yoroshiku!2 points

To be honest, the local varieties of shitposting are rather exceptional (unless they spill out of the Coliseum and make an actual mess). I just belive there's meant to be some balance in the universe. ...that is, someone should still post normal stuff while you guys are taking the piss or we'll become /b/ with a neat blog feature attached to it. I'm mostly joking though. :>2 points -

Why I always play games with nonhuman heroines first.
MayoeruHitori reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
My name is Clephas, and I am a pervert. lol, just kidding... or not. Considering how long I've been playing eroge, I'm definitely a pervert. However, that isn't really what this post is about. When I look at the VNs for a month, the first thing I look for are chuunige, then fantasy/sci-fi, and then non-human heroines (though the last two are interchangeable depending on my mood). The distant fourth is an interesting protagonist, the fifth is an interesting heroine (if I don't find any of the heroines interesting in setting or character description after eliminating the factors above, I generally have trouble picking the game up). Why do I love nonhumans...? It is pretty much the only 'romantic' part left in my body. To be frank, I don't believe in or trust romance. I firmly believe that romance is a lie we tell ourselves so we can ignore the fact that we are being driven by our body's desire for children and the resulting psychological hunger for a close partner. That might seem like a cynical way to think of things, and I don't think about things like that while I'm playing. However, when it is over or before I start? Always. I like the strange, the weird, the warped, the unusual... what is the point of telling a story if it is about the girl next door? If I want to know about the girl next door, I'll walk over and say hello. I love power trips, I like heroines with different instincts and outlooks, and I like heroines who simply don't share mine or the protagonist's culture. I love heroines who have lived hundreds of years. I like heroines that used to be animals. I am deeply fond of vampire heroines. I could go on forever about this. The fact is, we are shaped by our experiences, and a heroine that has had some seriously unusual experiences is generally far more interesting than a heroine who grew up next door and comes to visit every morning. This is actually the main reason why I find it difficult to comprehend racism on a gut level... though I can comprehend it on the anthropological and sociological studies level. This is also why I hate 'nerfed' nonhuman heroines. Need to have a vampire heroine attend school? Make her a unique 'daywalker' or have vampires not worry about the sun in the first place. Need to have a succubus be safe around men? Make it so she only needs regular food and the seduction thing is just an ability (these are both actual examples, incidentally). You have an immortal heroine? Make sure she gives up that immortality in her route so that the protagonist doesn't have to worry about being outlived by his wife (ugh, I mean, ugh. Sometimes that works, but most of the time it is a let down). Thanks for reading this random ramble, lol.1 point -

Are there any English VNs with exceptional prose?
Chronopolis reacted to Deep Blue for a topic
some people believe that a good and complicated prose makes a good vn (I won't give names but people that are consider gurus in this vn world), in fact they gave a lower score to some vns just because it has a simple writing style, I don't agree with this at all, if something is good it is good no matter how complex the writing style is. At the end of the day if the story is bad no matter how good the prose is the story will still be bad.1 point
