Not sure if this counts, but I have a funny story about my Wii. So I wanted to play Wario World on my Wii 'cause I didn't have my Gamecube with me, and I couldn't get the game to work, no matter how many times I blew on it in case of dust. So I thought the disk might be too scratched to play and looked up methods to remedy it slightly, I did that for about 10 minutes before going downstairs and getting a washcloth and toothpaste. I put a good amount of toothpaste on the disk and used the washcloth to lightly scrub it to get ri of the scratches, I cleaned it with the damp washcloth and tried again. It still didn't work, so I tried putting the Wii in different positions to make it work and it still failed. Do you wanna know what the problem was?3 points -

Some things missing in some BL games
Ranzo and one other reacted to MaggieROBOT for a blog entry
Or: These game characters should learn to stop worrying and love the dong Disclaimer: The following opinion is genuine. But I like to express myself in creative ways after so many mostly serious posts, so shit ensues. A review will be up next week, please keep supporting this blog. After so many dicks, I looked back to my complete VNs folder and tried to do one of the most dumb things a fan can do: compare not completely alike games. Bl games comes in all kinds of packages, with different plot genres and structures, but as long as they are under the same umbrella definition of BL, I noticed they all share the same types of mistakes. Misses that I found in BL anime and manga too. Of course, when I say all I don't mean AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL of them, but I'm trying to raise awareness of the problems that I usually spot in the majority of the popular releases. I already saw every one of those pitfalls being avoided in mangas, so there's hope in this world. Since Fuwa surely love some top X, I'll organize it in some top 5 countdown fashion. Do notice that I'll not tackle what I see in doujinshis here, because seriously, who wants to fix the fantasy world of short doujins? Hell, if everything they did there had 100% realism, instead of 17/20 pages of porn we would get 17/20 pages of (trying to) pay bills. But enough sadness, let's get this over with! 5) Girls Okay okay, maybe lots of people don't want tits in their BL works, but unless we're on a prison/gang/old army/all-boys school/world where mpreg is a thing (90% of the games are out already...), we need some of them! Of the works I read, if I happen to see some girl, one of the following happens: She's some character's mom. Then she dies/is murdered and the guy angsts; She's some character's sister. Then she dies/is murdered and the guy goes into a roaring rampage of revenge (in both cases, she dies within the first five minutes of the novel); She's the main villain. She eventually dies; Plot twist, she's actually male! Because of this maaaaybe she can survive. She totally confused me for a second... I would love to see some day a BL story where the MC have some female best friend and they talk about boys together aaah~ 4) Porn that doesn't sound like your average BxG h-scene Seriously, if some games didn't keep reminding me that both participants have dicks, I would think that I was reading some R18 otomege. Even some CGs seems like the guy on top is totally hitting the wrong place, artists, please get basic anatomy right thank you. I wouldn't copy a whole scene of this type here because effort, but it's as full of "yameteeeee, yaaaaaaa, Ryou-kun (random name) dameeee" as you're expecting. And what's the deal of only the guy on the receiving end feeling it? Draw some expressions on the other guy too! It almost looks like that while the uke is having the time of his life, the seme suddenly realized that he'll probably die before Kentaro Miura finishes Berserk. Probably he and all of us, actually. Not BL, but I'll never forget Akihito pulling a Sad Affleck in the middle of the porn years before Sad Aflleck was a thing! (Image edited by ESRB) 3) Characters that actually identify themselves as gay/bisexual Okay, we get that social stigma exists and all that... But BL VNs are usually more "edgy" than Yuri ones... Sometimes society collapsed already, what are you waiting for, you dummy??? "Oh, I'm totally not gay, it's just because it's you!" Yeah sure, Jun-kun (random name) only liked Kou-kun (random name), not a single woman (they exists? See point 5 above) or guy before. Or after. You're really not gay, Jun-kun, you're Kousexual apparently. The scenario is even worse for bisexual characters. Remember any? Exactly. Just kidding, I remember him! In fact... Everyone is bi in this pic. This is one bitastic game! 2) Condoms Eeeer, just because none of you guys can become pregnant (if mpreg isn't a thing in their world, that is) doesn't mean it's all okay... But maybe if they DID try to use one, the following could happen, so guess in the end it's all the same... FINISH HIM! (ESRB attacked again, thank you for your understanding) 1) Lube Dude, seriously, ouch. Just... ouch.2 points -

How big a difference does it make for you to have voice acting in a VN?
Chronopolis and one other reacted to Odenvard for a topic
I'd say I have a pretty clearly defined opinion about voice acting; If it's actually good, it can add quite a lot to the experience. If it's anything less than good, or if it's too inconsistent, such as if side characters pop up much at all but are unvoiced (unvoiced protag is fine), it tends to detract (and distract) from the experience more than it adds. Of course, while I don't know if I can honestly name any cases where a VN which had no voice acting would suffer from somehow gaining good voice acting, or any cases of VNs with good voice acting that would improve in the absense of voice acting anyways, but it's worth noting that voice acting is often expensive for companies who make any sort of game at all. As such, it's quite possible that a company could end up either funding the creation of any other parts of a game less due to including voice acting, especially if they realize they underestimated the cost of voice acting after they've already commited too much money to its inclusion. This is particularly likely for small/indie/new companies, who are also the ones who are hit hardest by making this mistake. With that in mind, I would say that VNs made by a big company that has less to worry about with regards to the risks of including voice acting benefit the most from it; There are limits to how much any one part of a VN can benefit from additional funds, due to things like artists/writers not being physically capable of producing more than a certain amount of material in a given amount of time no matter how much they're payed, and a big company is far more likely to actually run into those limits. Plus, they'll be more likely to actually be able to pay for good voice actors. Meanwhile, VNs made by small/indie/new companies not only don't have as much to gain from voice acting (there's more risk of them not being able to get good enough voice actors for voice acting to actually be a good thing for the VN), but they also risk making other parts of the VN worse; Whether that be due to mistakes made when determining how much they should spend on voice acting leading to other parts of the game needing to be rushed to make the game profitable, or due to intentional planning which nonetheless leads to less resources (funds/possibly time due to available funds) being commited to other parts of the VN. Because of this, VNs made by these companies may even be said to indirectly benefit from not including voice acting.2 points -

Some things missing in some BL games
Plk_Lesiak reacted to MaggieROBOT for a blog entry
The game is Fukai ni Nemuru Oujo no Abaddon. Yeah, I'll keep praising this game in the forums forever, because it's the one true bi game I needed! Party have six characters, all of them are bi. As someone who also played DMMD and TnC, the only one I truly agrees is Motomi. Koujaku only "played around with girls" as he and even Aoba said, he didn't really cared for them. I think the same can be said for Noiz, he didn't cared for anyone at all before. As for Mink and Mizuki, I can't remember them ever as much as mentioning girls, is it a fandisc/light novel/drama CD thing?1 point -

My super-duper high-end gaming PC (which my brother left me after moving out from our house - not something I would ever buy myself), once managed to go into sleep mode and never wake up, being stuck in that blinking-diode state no matter what I did with it. It was super weird. Thankfully, it did that impressive "play dead" trick a week before its warranty ended, so I just barely managed to get it fixed for free. From what I understood, they had to flash the bios to get it working again. Sadly, I'm not tech-savy, so I can't add much more to this topic.1 point -

Actually, yeah, probably. I don't know, it simply didn't have anything that could hook me. The horror isn't particularly scary. The characters are pretty bland. Ideas about ghosts could hook me potentially, if they were better developed, but so far they weren't really that interesting. Well, maybe I'm too harsh with my ratings, but I can't really give it anything above 4/10, and I feel like even that is too high.1 point -

Back when Fuwanovel was really active back in 2013, 2014 and 2015; we had topics like this all the time. Like 5+ a day sometimes, lol. Honestly I miss those days of Fuwa. It really shows how much the forums have slowed down that we only get like 1 of these threads a day. But I'm glad that people are trying to keep the forums a live. Its kind of like keeping a fire alive. And damn, the fire of fuwa used to be raging! But yeah, one of the problems I had when the forums was that active was that I spent a lot more time talking about VNs then actually reading them, lol.1 point

This isn't anything new - a bunch of studios experimented with such ways of storytelling. LittleWitch was the most notable company - they developed their own FFD (Floating Frame Director) engine to handle such text bubbles and used them in their games since 2002. Only when you don't know how to handle their engines. Most games don't have them hard-coded and FFD's text bubbles are fully customizable.1 point

How good should your translation be before editing?
Pomelo reacted to Fred the Barber for a blog entry
You're much better off just getting someone who knows what they're doing translating it in the first place. Translation checking is a luxury some localization projects have, but at least in fan translations, it's largely there to compensate for the fact that most of the people working in fan translations just aren't very good translators. 99% of the time, if they were passable at translating, they'd get out of fan translation and translate for a living. If the translation is best described as garble, no editor can save it short of going to check every translated line and effectively redoing the work. I think what you're saying here is predicated on a mistaken assumption people often make when talking about localization: that there's some sort pidgin language between Japanese and English (let's call it Fantranslationese). Bizarrely, some people not only believe in the existence of Fantranslationese, but they have even convinced themselves that they prefer to read Fantranslationese over English. But make no mistake: Fantranslationese is not a language, and it does not communicate anything like what the original Japanese did and what a decent English translation would. Fantranslationese is a pale shadow of a language, and an editor can only do so much to fix a "translation" attempting to use it short of retranslating the work because the editor otherwise doesn't actually get an experience like reading the original. Relying on editors to inject flair into a Fantranslationese script means you lost all the flair that was in the original. You're certainly not there yet, but you're well on your way to writing fanfiction instead of a translation, if you go this route. Editors should be polishing a translation, smoothing out rough edges and ensuring consistency. They absolutely should be fixing the translator's mistakes, always with the aid of the translator, because the editor sees the work differently and therefore is going to rarely find translation mistakes due to their different view. This is a given especially because of how ambiguous and context-dependent Japanese is. I never want to work on any project with a translator who believes this.1 point -
Fur-lined, weather-beaten jacket screams "I work hard for a living" contrasting with the friendly goatee and vintage reading glasses that shout "I'm a tech support expert, how can I help you today?". Turtleneck sweater underneath the jacket for that Bear Grylls "I'm literally prepared to leave this concrete jungle and survive in the real woods at any time" rough and tumble feel. Slight smile that says "I want to kill myself, but don't really feel like it tbh". Somewhat unkempt but fitting hair that says "I care about my hair enough to not look like a fool, but I'm not metrosexual". Finally, the Apple earbuds show that despite all of this, you are modern and forward-thinking. 9/10. u srs handsome tbh1 point
