Clockwork Leyline and Hoshimemo: What actually happened!
Toranth and 3 others reacted to Nandemonai for a topic
I work in software myself. Their explanation makes perfect sense to me. They fell victim to one of the classic blunders: They made a risky change (upgrading a version in their script compiler) that they thought was a mostly-harmless change. Because it was right before the games were supposed to release, they said 'we just need to do a quick check and make sure nothing broke' when what they really needed to do was another full runthrough of the game. Why would they do this? Because their tests are still manual. Someone has to manually play the game and check for untranslated lines. This is another of the classic blunders. Something like checking for untranslated lines, or checking to make sure that there are no 'orphaned' parts of the script (lines that exist in the data but the engine never actually displays), can and should be automated. Anytime a build is generated, those checks should be run automatically. This is a bit more expensive to develop up front (because you have to write the tools to run these tests, and the infrastructure to do it automatically) but it saves a lot of QA effort, and avoids humiliating incidents like these. So they made a risky change they didn't realize was risky, and it blew up in their faces. Okay, fine. There's nothing out of the ordinary about this. It happens. And they can't revert the change, because it would cause even less acceptable issues. Also nothing unusual. Then they discovered fixing it requires rewriting the game engine, which is riddled with inline assembler (ugh!), and is generally a pain in the ass. Again, there's nothing unusual about this. There's two things about this that get me. First, Sekai's QA processes are clearly insufficient. The game should never have gotten out of the door like this. They need better tools and processes so they don't do so much manually. Each project needs to build a button that fires off a test to find out whether there are any untranslated lines. And they need to push that button every time they make any change. Second, this is Sekai Project being Sekai Project again: You must have known this weeks ago ago, guys. This happened right before Christmas, they might not have even started looking at it until early January, then it takes a while to really understand the problem. Then it takes a while to realize 'no, this isn't a quick fix'. By this time it's probably around mid-January. So why was it only announced this week? Look. Everybody makes mistakes. Bugs happen. But there's no excuse for not announcing this as soon as they knew what the root cause was. This is like them announcing they'd talk about Maitetsu 18+ at a con, then not doing it, and then leaving it hanging for months.4 points -

Finally got around to watching Konosuba, and I'm loving it. Have one episode left of season 1 now. Episode 9 is my favorite so far, lol. I need more of this! Two seasons with 10 episodes is not enough! Well, + the Vita game I bought in Japan. Still not enough (/ω\)4 points

My weapon of choice is my anime figure collection. I want to be wearing a maid costume and a trenchcoat, and I will fiercely protect my master, who in a strange twist of fate is also me (multiple personality style). I make frequent comments about the colour of the sky, and am prone to fits of rage regarding only one particular chair, whose very existence perpetually haunts me. Androgynous.2 points

That's not a bad dream... but more and more small otaku-related retail businesses are going bankrupt even in areas with active communities these days. It is really, really hard to compete with online retailing for the 'base media' (LNs, VNs, manga, anime, etc). Specializing in importation sometimes works, apparently, but the costs of buying stuff in Japan and bringing it over here mean that you'll end up asking for even more than the Japanese base price, which is already more than most people are willing to pay for a single game, book, manga, or blu-ray. You actually might have more success setting up something like a manga cafe, providing a friendly environment for people to play games, read manga and LNs, and otherwise indulge their otaku hobbies. That kind of thing is rare over here, so far. Depending on how large the local community is, it would probably be workable for you. For all the jokes about most of us being 'hikikomori' and the like, most otaku are just normal guys and gals with a few odd hobbies and maybe a bit of weabooism on the side. Small note:2 points -

Hacklist: A Noir tale in a Sci-Fi/Art Deco setting [WIP]
Plk_Lesiak reacted to Veldrinne for a topic
Hello everyone! Today I wanted to share with you the VN I've been working on with some friends. After that, i wanted to share the peculiar history behind the development, as we've had many questions that can only be answered by asking you directly. It is important to us that you give us your feedback, whether you like the project or not (especially if you don't!): “Rejoice, brothers and sisters, for The Answer has been proclaimed. Blessed be those who know how to listen.” -Nova City foundation chronicles In a world torn apart by crisis, war and hunger, our old leaders faced a dilemma: either find an answer to the conflict or leave humanity to its imminent destruction. They chose the answer. But this answer was not found, it was built. Nova City, humanity´s new hope Nova City is a vibrant symbol of hope and progress. It stands over the ruins of the war-torn world we left behind. Bursting with life and commerce, it seems unthinkable that the city itself is also a massive computer built to house “The Answer”: a system created to govern in the most rational and optimized way, excluding humanity from the exercise of political power. The Answer has brought prosperity to Nova City, and its citizens have lived devoid of major conflicts for over two centuries. Inside an apartment of this city, you wake up to find a tarot card that someone must have slipped under your door. The message is clear: The Fortune Teller has chosen you as the next victim. Afraid to leave your apartment, you rush to your computer to make a call that will change the lives of many people (or even end them) as the delicate balance of power in the city begins to shift. Embark on this noir tale of mystery and intrigue that will pit humanity’s reason against our own inevitable emotional nature. Game & Features From the start, you have locked yourself in your apartment to hide from the serial killer called "The Fortune Teller". In such a predicament, you’ll be interacting with Nova City and its people through your computer’s screen. From your computer, you’ll be able to make calls, tap into people’s phones and gain access to confidential information. You’ll also be able to hack into security systems in order to, for example, tail someone through traffic light’s camera feeds. During the course of the story, you’ll be able to create alliances with Nova City’s most important factions, gaining powerful friends (and enemies) in the process. Hacklist is currently being developed for PC/Mac. Features: Emotion Compass: Allows you to see how people feel, and how their emotional state changes as you touch certain topics. This will allow you to call bluffs, understand people better, push them to act in certain ways or set the mood for intimate conversations. Profiler: You'll have access to police reports for everyone you speak to. The profiler updates itself as new events unfold, and will give you some insights and hints about your contact's personality, letting you know how people may react differently to the same emotions. Hacklist also presents some new mechanics to the usual VN structure in the form of Apps you can use at any time during your experience: Skall: A videochat app where most dialogues/scenes will happen. Watermelon News: A social network where you'll be able to read people's posts and Nova City News. Remote.hack: Access networks, hack into security cameras, tap phones, and get into other people's computers to reveal their darkest secrets. The story behind the story... (and how your opinion will decide the changes we'll make) So! We're a team of 6 living and working in Caracas, Venezuela. This is a project born a couple of years ago in a itch.io game jam, back when it looked like this: (and yep... that's me!) After the jam, the project leads wanted to continue the project. I couldn't at that time because of my job, so they formed Caustic Games to do it. That's how the second version of Hacklist was born. It was a much more polished product, and it had a new cyberpunk/vaporwave style. This version was approved on Square Enix Collective, where you can still play the demo. (That's Kentai on the center. They grow up so fast! *sniff*) (A screenshot of our pseudo-antagonist Clive Jackson. Remember the name, we'll come back to him in a bit!) The campaign was successful, and we received a lot of feedback that helped us detect some flaws we had. Around this time, 2 of the main artists left the project, and the remaining artist and myself (i had just joined the team) couldn't accurately replicate the previous artist's style, so we were forced to abandon a style we liked in favor of making a new one that we could handle better. Eventually, we rewrote the whole story, keeping the same characters and archetypes mostly intact. But this story was to be set in a futuristic utopia, rather than the bleak future from the previous cyberpunk setting. After some time, we decided that a futuristic Art Deco setting was perfect for the mood of future, progress and empowerment we wanted Nova City to irradiate. ...And then we hit a pretty hard roadblock: none of the characters we were designing were aesthetically cohesive with either the tone and setting, or the environment itself. So we started to make some tests on styles for the characters... ...then we made some more... ...and MORE... We finally set out to define the style and technique we would have for the in-game art, and it went down to these three versions of Clive Jackson (the guy i told you to remember from the previous version!): Aaaand that's where we stand now! we decided internally to go with the third option, as we felt the technique blended better with the background and the character was designed to resemble an Art Deco statue, from the volumetrization to the edgy style from illustrations of the 1920's, 30's and 40's. The thing is, we kind of went open minded about changing the anime style to something that better reflected the world where the story is taking place, but none of us has seen more than a handful of non-anime visual novels, and have no idea if this art style is actually appealing or if it is, on the contrary, something that would disuade readers. Here's where you come into play! We need your feedback and opinion about the project, as asking you guys directly is the only possible way for us to know we're on the right track. We would love it if you took the time to watch the concepts, mockups and screens and tell us, honestly, which images do you find more appealing, and if the current state of art style is something you might want to see in a VN. Do you think non-anime style in VNs is something detrimental? or do you think it-s a welcome change of routine? Please let us know what you think! Thank you for reading through the end! Anything you can comment on the project is a HUGE help for us! -Jorge Veloso AKA "Vel", Artist at Caustic Games Our Team Hacklist on Facebook VNDB entry still in progress...1 point -

Goddamn. It took me over 2 and a half years to get to this mark after taking 5 months to get to 1000. Well, I guess I'll explain my story on this site again for all of those people who didn't recognize me from my early days. I arrived on this site in October of 2015 as a guy who didn't have any clue about the community in general. Over time, I posted way too much for any normal human being and that caused me to be recruited by former shitposter @Dergonu and along with the now forum-dead NTR queen @CeruleanGamer, we formed this spammer group and it's grown into a public Discord since that PM group was formed back in January of 2016. Along the way, I grew more elitist and cynical for the VN community and this was mainly triggered by Noble Works, the worst VN to ever be read by human eyes. Then I left for like 2 years from this site as it was becoming quite dead, at least to me. I came back and started posting again in January of this year and hopefully, I stick around to shitpost/give my opinions to others for a while longer. Now time to be an annoyance and mention random people I like (in a hetero way). @Dergonu - You may be a nazi mod now, but I still remember when you were a spammer just like me. Keep being shitty with your taste for me. @DarkZedge - We basically don't agree on anything besides Kara no Shoujo, but you're still a cool neko lover and you're just as cynical as me, so that's good. @Arcadeotic - The original serious poster. I still can't forgive you for ruining Gahkthun for me, but I still expect an overly semi-serious post about this. @Kawasumi - Trap lover, trap in general, and a person with good taste in VNs. @HMN - The best male alive. Glad to have you in the Anti Moege Task Force and as a fellow Kyonyuucon. @Kiriririri - The worst taste in this community. Keep that in your moemory. Just kidding, good luck on your fruitless mod quest. @AaronIsCrunchy - My favourite british metalhead, even if I have no clue what your taste in VNs is at this point. @Flutterz - The second best thing about the Fuwachat, compared to DemonSabre. @Funnerific - You may not like a lot of my favourite VNs, but we can relate in G-Senjou no Maou, so that's good enough. @Zakamutt - A fellow elitist and hater of most translations. Finish Himawari already. @greenshadow622 - You and I were allies in the headpat bans of 2017 and we will forever be bonded by that. @Nintaidou - Thank you for showing me all of those kyonyuu nukige. They were...appreciated. @madvanced - Fellow portuguese man, so that's enough to be cool with you. I have no clue about anything else though, besides that you meme. @Forgetful Frank - Here's some advice for life. Actually finish a VN before picking up 3 more. It'll help you to like certain VNs more. @Ayana - The guy with the most similar taste to mine. Shame you can't be online to talk more often, but the conversations are pretty cool. @Asonn - My favourite toddlercon and hater of most VNs. @Barry Benson - My favourite spanish bee. It's always fun shitting on TL companies and shitposting together. Also, I'm pretty sure you have 18 weeks to TL Tenkiame now. @Kaguya - My favourite mod currently. I don't agree with a lot of your philosophies, but I can at least understand them. Plus, having a conversation with you leads to...interesting things happening. @SpinningShiat - You're gay. (This is what you wanted, right?) Finally, I'll mention all the new people who I'm not entirely familiar with on this site since I left. People like @Thatcomicguy, @Zander, @Plk_Lesiak, @MaggieROBOT, @Ranzo, @Dreamysyu, and others. I'll recruit you guys into my spammer cult eventually. And that's all from me today. Just a reminder that you can ask me anything or roast me or whatever you want to do on this post. Here's to reaching 2000 posts in a reasonable amount of time.1 point -

Clockwork Leyline and Hoshimemo: What actually happened!
Dreamysyu reacted to Mr Poltroon for a topic
Their QA team went over the script once it was finished. Turned out the engine was prone to crashing. After the QA pass was finished, they 'fixed' the engine and re-inserted the scripts. After that, they checked the instances where the engine was previously crashing. Excellent. Doesn't crash any more. Ship it. What is particularly 'lazy' about this? Were they supposed to pay their QA team to check the whole thing over again after fixing the engine? Maybe this is bad planning. Maybe QA should have only occurred once work on the engine was finished. Maybe they should have predicted changing the engine would have introduced new issues. Sekai Project's problem is not greed or laziness. It's incompetence. Lack of experience. Disjointed groups of people working for them. Some know what they're doing. Others are basically scamming SP.1 point -

I that's 100% true, why do they even hire translators in the first place? They can always go SakuraGame route and simply sell edited machine translations, you know. It's always much cheaper and quicker to get machine-tl's into somewhat readable state than actually hire real people, you know. I mean, I'm not finding excuses for Sekai. They go a bit too far in their incompetence nowadays. But, feel free to disagree with me, I don't think it's anything more than incompetence.1 point -

SeaBed is purposefully written in a really passive fashion. Partly to show Sachi's mental state, but also to emphasize the themes of the whole work. There's hardly any "drama" and structure is pretty flat, because the story and the characters refuse to dramatize their situations. After all, isn't that what we all do? Downplay our problems and just keep living our daily lives? SeaBed does get more interesting towards the end (plus the later chapters are shorter too), but for the most part it's is very low-key. Not that I think that any explanation can help if SeaBed's style doesn't work with someone, but I'm really impressed by it. The passive tone and the lack of explicit emotions in the narration is really unusual and pretty brave choice. I'm not surprised it is seen as boring, but I personally find it strangely calming. It's not captivating in the usual sense, but there's a nice feeling of time just flowing peacefully. Kinda like reading an old diary. I also think it's amazing how touching the story manages to be despite being what one would traditionally consider "uneventful".1 point -

Opinions on the current visual novel fanbase/community?
Nandemonai reacted to Clephas for a topic
More or less this... by that choice of words, he essentially stated that, whether conscious or subconscious, that was his prejudice not only against the games but against the lifestyle. If he'd simply said 'I can't get into yuri or yaoi' or something similar, it would have served the same purpose without causing so much trouble. To be straight about it, I can't get into yaoi... but I don't mind people next door living the lifestyle. By that choice of words, he essentially indirectly condemned any member of the community who does pursue an LGBT lifestyle. Even if he was just referring to the VNs, he went beyond stating a preference by that choice of words... he was indirectly attacking those who do like them. While I frequently complain about charage/moege, I do manage to enjoy many of them and I don't condemn people for playing them... and I don't condemn people for enjoying LGBT-influenced games.1 point -
