The game becomes a little less enjoyable than it would've been to read in Japanese, but usually much more enjoyable than the alternative: watching a slideshow accompanied by streams of cryptic runes and arbitrary grunts.

I was curious about this for a while, but how do you guys rate your VNs (in VNDB, in mental notes, etc?)? Do you like to give it a numerical value or just "this one is good" or "this one is bad"? Do you use decimals in VNDB scores? Do you rate things you dropped?

just as the title says. despite creating the thread, im gonna cheat and pick two as my favorites although the first one i may like more than the second. this one is just so bouncy and fun to listen to. the volume of the singer helps as well with her upbeat singing with the tune and animation. its a really great song to listen to over and over again. DONT WATCH ATTACK ON TITAN SEASON 2 OP IF YOU HAVENT SEEN SEASON ONE YET!!! this i feel i liked just because it was apart of my favorite anime of 2017. its still a great opening. the characters we know and root for gearing up to go into another long, unending battle with the titans. preparing for the worst as some may die and sacrifices must be made. mikasa zipping in on her odm gear, masterfully dodging rocks coming at her, all beautifully animated to the music. got any picks?

I rate VNs based on 80% enjoyment and 20% critical. The thing is that critical problems tend to affect my enjoyment while reading, so I don't really know how to define that balance.

I'll just go with Kobayashi's op, both because it's brilliant in itself and because it reminds me of how I loved that show and everything in it that wasn't Lucoa. Really, lt would be a 10/10 for me if not for that character and her random child molestation "gags". Oh, and Netojuu no Susume OP was quite awesome:

Majo Koi Nikki has been a real eye opener for me regarding quality translation and the fact that translation is a lot more than just "write the same words in a different language". I read a section after it had been translated and it was ok. The story was certainly there and for the most part better than those labeled as "bad translations". However the next time I read the very same section, it had been edited and now the contents happens to be the very same thing. The same events, the same dialogue, the same descriptions. While it may sound like it changed very little, it actually changed everything. The wording had become different, the flow of text feels a lot better, the flow between lines feels more fluently. This makes the flow of reading completely different and you will end up wanting to know what happens next on a whole different level. Usually the first time you read something will be the best reading experience because you are spoiled the next time. It wasn't in this case. How the story is told matters a whole lot more than first meets the eyes. I'm not qualified to tell if a VN is translated properly from Japanese unless it's downright horrible, such as mixing up names of characters or use Engrish. I have seen one case where one word was left in romaji and when I looked it up, it had a proper translation, which was spot on in the context. However I did something else at some point, which is interesting in this context. At some point the movie Frozen was the big thing and I got talked into watching it. I did so in English. Later I ended up watching it as a group activity and it was translated. Despite being claimed to be a good translation, it sucked and killed the movie. I then looked around to figure out translation quality in as many languages as possible and it turns out that from what I can tell, most if not all translations seems to be of questionable quality. They seem rushed. When word by word translation isn't possible, you have to make decisions and it feels like whoever made those decisions didn't know the movie well enough. This killed all the minor details in the dialogue as well as consistency. As a result, I would go as far as to say which movie you watched depend on which language you used when watching it and English is significantly better. It's still not a movie I would recommend though. It's just a decent platform for translation accuracy observations because they at least tried to do a better job with the localizations than movies usually get. As for translations of VNs: the quality varies greatly and there is no question that a good translation is a much better reading experience than a poor one. Identifying poor ones can be an issue because the only way to tell for sure is to be able to read the untranslated version, which defeats the purpose of a translation. You can rely on what other people write online, but then you have to remember that there are people who studied Japanese and proclaim that the lazy people who didn't deserve poor translations and they basically troll the talks about translation quality. I have seen claims going as far as claiming translations should change the story to punish people for not reading Japanese and group X should be banned from releasing anything because they use UK English. There is also the gem that all translated VNs should be rewritten to fit US culture and if you don't live in the US you have no business reading VNs. What worries me the most is that the trolls delivering those statements were at least the time professional translators. It doesn't sound good that it is apparently possible to buy an official translation done by somebody who believes readers should be punished with poor translation quality because they can't read the sacred language of VNs.

1: I mean, you will be losing out on the original intent of the writer, and great aspects of the work. This is pretty self explanitory, really. 2: A great translation is both accurate, and reads nice and fluently in the language it was translated into. When you're reading a good translation, you should feel like what you're reading could just as well have been written natively in the language it was translated into. You should not "feel" the source language lingering in the line. (Something you will see lots of when the translation is very literal.) 3: In terms of textual accuracy, it becomes impossible for people without Japanese knowledge to know when a translation is bad. You can't gauge the accuracy of a translation if you don't understand the source material, after all. In cases where there are big issues with accuracy, (like If my heart had wings,) you'll generally see a big outrage on any kind of VN related forum/ website, so just scanning Fuwanovel or similar sites will be enough to find out if TLs are "bad" in that regard. As for translations that are technically accurate, but are just bad in terms of English writing/ have incredibly literal translations that create a hot mess of crap, (Libra,) you should be able to tell yourself, really. Like, just read some of these examples from Libra. It should be fairly obvious that this is a bad translation. Example 1, example 2, example 3.

Spring break is over for me, so I can finally calm down with my posting, and bury myself in lines code. I have only six weeks of school left! Yay! Well, actually my average vote is just below 7, mostly because, just like @bakauchuujin said, I just don't finish most of the VNs that fall into 1-5 category according to my system, unless they are very short. 5 in my case is more or less a vote for a VN of absolutely average quality, which is something I wouldn't normally enjoy if there are better VNs out there.

I don't know about this in VNs, but if the goal is female feet, I might be able to hook you up with some women who enjoys walking all over men. I seem to run into that kind everywhere.

I just say Fuck Objectivity and rate things how much I enjoy them and less on "technical" things that don't matter to me or 'objective' things people find wrong (like 'plot holes') that don't effect my enjoyment in any way Scoring system for me is something like 10 - All Time Fav 9- Really Good with little flaws 8- Quite Enjoyed it with some flaws 7- Decent but a whole bunch of things prevented me from really liking it 6-Alright, Managed to get through but lots of things definitely could've been better 5- Meh. I likely forced myself to finish it, I got bored of it, or I liked it at first then became bad but not bad enough to be a 4 or below. 4 and below - Varying degrees I didn't enjoy it

For me, 10 = great story, great character, great music, GREAT ending, leave long lasting impression 9 = great story, great character, good music, GOOD ending 8 = good story, good character, good music, good ending 7 = ordinary story, ordinary character, ordinary music, ordinary ending 1 - 6 = Not recommended. Of course, I also have soft spot and bias for certain things. Sometimes certain things weighed heavier than others.

Everything that could be said has already been said, but anyway. I think there are two types of "bad translations". The first kind is that that you immediately realise it's bad because of things like: -Lack of translation "memory", that is, they don't keep a consistency or a record over time. If something has been translated before in a certain way, unless there is a good reason to change it, it must remain that way. -Lack of context awareness. Very similar to the previous one, but in a short span of time. This tends to happen when the translator hasn't even taken a comprehensive read of the source material. In extreme cases, they don't even know the gender of the characters they are translating. In less aggravating ones, you might find a line that was supposed to be, say, sarcastic, but it doesn't sound like it at all in the target language. -Lack of understanding of the linguistic differencies of both languages. Every language is different in which semantic and pragmatic features they express grammaticaly, even though the essence of the message they convey is the same. A good translator will be able to grasp that essence and express it in the target language in a way it sounds natural for any native speaker. Even if you don't know anything about the original language, this is something anyone can notice. Then there's the second "kind" of bad translation. This looks good, and doesn't apparently fall in any of the errors described above. What happened here is that the translator just altered that essence of the message I talked about before. A translation should be natural and at the same time impartial. It's your window to the work of the author, which should be transparent, and you have no right to change it. Obviously in many cases you can only notice this if you know the original language and read the original work. This is the reason this kind of bad translation is the most dangerous. As for the OP original question... Well, it answers itself when you mull over what a bad translation is, doesn't it?

I'm...not even sure how to process this information. Trip bulldozed through the last 30% of that route like it was his plaything, finishing it in just over 2 weeks, release included. I understand why Maki's route left him salty, but all-in-all it was still an enjoyable VN. They are the gods of the English VN world right now.

A problem with this is that you can't really make a system where the employer pays once they have checked the quality. Given how corporate greed works, that generally would mean that people would do the work and then get a shit payment no matter how well they did because the one in charge of handing out money would always say they did a bad job so that they can keep more money to themselves, atleast as long as they don't feel that they need the worker for another project.

Most likely, but when people talk about bad translations in VNs, they tend to compare the original Japanese release with the translated release. They usually don't dig into the details and identify if it went wrong in translation, editing, TLC or any of the other steps. It really doesn't matter much to outsiders, only the end result.

ACTION IS COMING A small update of sorts: We're roughly at 65-75% translated for the common route. If things go well, we'll have the trial version ready just in time for late spring/summer.
