Considering that all the "attacks" come from a clique of bored old-timers that either always did it or can't be bothered to post seriously anymore, it's at least very easily controllable as long as there are admins present on the Forums from time to time. I really disliked when a few months ago the site was literally dominated by shitposts and barely anything posted was worth reading. I'm pretty sure it also looked terrible from the outside, when guests and newcomers tried to see what's going on around here or to evaluate the site. It was exceeding any reasonable limits. And yes, the spamming crew mostly had fun in their own little circle while everyone else seemed to observe it with annoyance or apathy. Thank God (or maybe rather Kaguya) that we're past that era. And with shitposts in general... I shipost/derail stuff somewhat regularly, but didn't even get a warning so far. This means that either there's some horrible bias involved, or there are some common-sense distinctions between having fun from time to time and making a total mess. Forum without shitposts is boring. Forum with mostly shiposts is unproductive and unreadable for anyone not intimately involved with the "meta" side of things. And I rather like where the line is drawn right now.4 points -

Generally speaking, MoeNovel gets good licenses and then does a shit job with them from a translation perspective. They also remove adult content, by varying degrees, which gets a lot of people riled up, especially around here, but make no mistake: their translations range from merely bad to utterly abysmal. From what I've seen, A Sky Full of Stars is far and away their least bad release, so if you don't mind missing the adult content, and you don't mind merely kinda lousy writing, give it a try. But check out some fine screenshots from their latest masterpiece, Cross Channel (be sure to click through for more WTF): A lot of this stuff is completely incomprehensible. Don't play Cross Channel. Don't play If My Heart Had Wings. A Sky Full of Stars might be kinda okayish.4 points -

Konosora/IMHHW is total mess, and it absolutely requires retranslation patch to be readable. Miazora/ASFOS is nowhere near that level. There are some grammar errors here and there, and some sentences may sound awkward, but it is readable, and I actually enjoyed it. As for all-ages version - this time the only thing removed are h-scenes themselves, but they don't try to hide that the characters had sex - they just don't show it, but it's implied that it happens off screen. All other things are left intact. But, I just read one route - we'll see, how the other three turn out. If you're not in hurry, you might want to wait for +18 restoration patch that @Infernoplex is working on, but I dare to say that steam version still can be enjoyable as-is (unlike IMHHW, in which only Kotori route was somewhat readable).2 points -

it is annoying especially with my pal umw earlier. i dont want to get to into but unlimitedmoeworks has been dealing with a lot and we've dealt with a lot from him, not in a necessarily bad kind of way but we're trying to help him overcome his social anxiety and to have discussions just go off the rails for the sake of it is annoying. this is just one example and i know people reading this who think im being malicious towards because of past clashing but it took a lot for umw to come clean to everyone. i know you guys see it as being harmless and it is but really derailing a convo for the sake of... whatever is off putting to other users who want to have a discussion.1 point -

Ninja's by Plk_Lesiak. Yeah, for people actually trying to have a discussion only to have that discussion drowned out by those who are bored and want to just be disruptive, it's incredibly annoying. That's why there's a chatter forum made specifically to fuck around (go at it, not judging) in. But again like Plk_Lesiak said there's an element of mucking around in every discussion, and it's all about where the line is drawn. I'm very happy with where the mods currently have the line, to be honest1 point -

Is double-posting stuff here and on Reddit in bad taste? I don't really know how to look at it... Anyways, I'll do it this time: I'm playing through Sunrider Academy (what am I doing with my life? :s) and so far it's... Not that bad, to be honest. It has exactly the trashy feel you would expect from an ecchi spin-off, but the dialogues and character development are done better than in the main Sunrider games. I've always thought that the heroines, other than Ava, were the weakest part of the whole series but here devs skipped the more irritating parts of the cast altogether and made the rest fairly appealing (apart from Asaga who I will never like because I hate the hyperactive/baka archetype). I've only started Ava route so far and I can't say I hate it - it's not at all serious, just like the whole game isn't, but it's fun to read and I like where the romance is going. Also, surprisingly enough, the game doesn't only rely on throwing blunt references to main games in your face, much of it is quite subtle and (borderline) smart. ;] The dating sim mechanics are extensive and time-consuming at first, but they go much quicker when you get the hang of it (and even quicker once you max out the affection meters and don't get random encounters anymore). You probably spare more time on managing numbers than with the actual story content, but the amount of story the game offers is actually pretty impressive. The one problem I have with it (but it's the case with most DSims) is that there's no way to completely skip the busywork when replaying for other routes, I will probably just end it at two playthroughs, finishing Ava's and Sola's arcs - I don't care about Chigara and Asaga anyways, neither here nor in the main games.1 point -

Kami Nomi: Godessess (the third season) For the first two seasons The World Only God Knows seems like a very chill, mostly comedic anime spoofing romance anime tropes etc., but the third season basically turns everything upside-down, with a life-or-death situation as the main axis of the story and quite a lot of tension. There's also that one scene... That scene made me cry and after that, made me feel sick for two days straight. I know I wasn't the only one, as I've seen people writing very similar things on Crunchyroll and in other places... While I think quite a few anime series made me emotional - Elfen Lied a long time ago, lately things like Konohana Kitan or Ancient Magus' Bride - and some of them maybe even got a few tears out of me, that's the only case I can remember when I cried for like 10 minutes non-stop and felt genuinely devastated.1 point -

Subarashiki Hibi discussion
PiggiesGoMoo reacted to littleshogun for a topic
Finished with Looking Glass Insect main route, I just want to say that the bullying was pretty over the top and I understand that no wonder if Zakuro really want to destroy the whole Kita High. Also in turn it tell us that Takuji knew that by saving Megu and Satoko while condemning Senagawa-sensei, he would make the formers follow him simply because the one with heavier sins were saved thanks to him. So basically Zakuro's here was the harmonizer in which if she dead, then the events of Invention will be happened because of the scribbles at her desk and Takuji found that scribbles. As for the last stretch of the story, I have a little of doubt. My doubt is that why both of Usami and Ayumi was suddenly afraid of suicide Spiral Matai at the D-Day and didn't care about the world being destroyed. If not for the fact that Usami herself is the one who to told Zakuro about those, I won't doubt that really. Okay, I can say that both of Usami and Ayumi did have a sudden counseling to have snapped them enough in regard of Spiral Matai, but still I think that both of them can just ran away and didn't came to the meeting place in the first place, because no matter of how dramatic the story is their change of personality was too rapid (MPD?). Or if we supposed to see that they knew about Spiral Matai nature, then I think they can show of how afraid they were to do that in their first meeting with Zakuro instead of encourage her. So what I can say is that we lack information for both of Usami and Ayumi, and to me it's a shame because actually their story should be important if the result of their search of Zakuro was the Invention story. So if anyone else can tell me the importance of those two characters, perhaps you can tell me here (Not something like they were Zakuro's fellow PreCure in Elhimuro or something like that, although maybe SCA-DI can propose the Elhimuro PreCure idea to Toei XD). Even though I did write so much about both of Usami and Ayumi, I guess it would be understandable if the rumor that SCA-DI have development hell was indeed true. And that's one of the example of how prominent it is, because actually the scenes when Zakuro about to do Spiral Matai was also in Invention and perhaps it won't be that surprising if SCA-DI just think about Insect plot detail after he finished with Invention. The other evidence that Subahibi was in development hell is that the date is showed some discrepancies with the synopsis, and it's pretty evident when Zakuro said that July 12th 2012 was Sunday while if we look at the computer date we knew that it's Thursday, so there's no way that Zakuro will have holiday at that date (Don't tell me that Zakuro did have hallucination that July 12th was indeed Sunday). If we didn't have the promotion that it was set at 2012, there won't be any discrepancies like that and actually it simple to do if SCA-DI check the computer callendar (The in game year should be at 2009, in which it's probably be the development year for Subahibi). For the next plan, I would continue with Jabberwocky if I follow the usual one. Although despite of that I still haven't saw Kimika's routes yet though, so maybe I'll see those first.1 point -
Zelda gets away with it so why not assassins creed?
mitchhamilton reacted to phantomJS for a topic
There are reasons for that. Zelda games are consistently great game-play wise. Every entry has a different central gameplay theme and/or setting (Wind Waker = Sailing on sea, Majora's Mask = Usage of masks grants different transformation on a Groundhog's Day story setting. Minish Cap = Ability to dwarf Link, A link to the past = 1 dark and 1 light world). The dungeons differs from game to game and were expertly-designed. Music and graphics are pretty good as well. All of the above combined = great gameplay experience. For The AC games, the characters are not memorable. and all of them feels recycled from one another besides the story setting. The latter entries have a lot of deja vu missions, and also playing-time padding boring ones. The graphics looks similar to me in all of the games despite each of the games were set in different places. Lastly, the controls in AC games feels quite wonky to me, have a ton of bugs , and microtransations to boot! (ok, last couple of points may not be entirely fair to Ubisoft when compared to Zela. I dun care~~) Please don't compare the 2 series, Mitch. Quality difference between the 2 series = day and night1 point -

Currently reading Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, and absolutely loving it. It's so much fun to read. I don't know how they keep introducing characters and giving them enough time, effort, and uniqueness to be memorable, but it seems to be working really well. Almost everyone (and certainly the team members) I've come across has had some sort of quirk that makes them interesting, and I find that I'm greatly enjoying the slice-of-life moments as a result. Spoilers below. I haven't laughed this hard at a VN since Majikoi, and I'm really enjoying it. It's such a fun read. I do wish it had a bit more of the fighting sections, since the battles are quite fun, but it's really good even so.1 point -

You can get some information about publishing figures. Just not anything about visual novels directly. All of the information about licensing fees and licensing terms is very much secret. But there are times when companies get forced to reveal these secrets: when they have to go to court. If you want to sue over something, you have to file the contracts, including real dollar figures, with the court. And court documents are public. Some lawsuits in the video game and anime business have resulted in some real interesting info surfacing over the years. The complete contract between Bungie and Activision for publishing Destiny (which originally contemplated that Destiny 3 would already be out and Destiny 4 would come out next year) can be found here. A writeup of the significant parts (a contract is rather dry and boring) is here. Now, Destiny is a far cry from your average visual novel. But it's the only time a full contract has been released that I could find. A bunch of stuff was released in the lawsuits over Curt Schilling and 38 studios: you can find more here and here (note that the actual document trove is no longer online). But even that's a bit far afield. There is some very interesting license data from the implosion of ADV Films, though. When ADV was falling apart, Funimation sued them over a debt they said they bought from a Japanese company. That led to some dollar figures being released. We know how much ADV paid for certain shows. The list is on ANN and while anime is more popular than VNs, of the three I found, it's the closest match. I'm not going to reproduce the list here (just check ANN). But there are a few things I can say about it: 1) It's not clear what these numbers are. Are these the up-front minimum guarantee prices? Or is this the total amount paid, including the up-front minimum guarantee and all the royalties that were owed? Did they even owe any royalties? The Crunchyroll coverage seems to imply that ADV paid a flat $25K per episode for 009-1. 2) Does this include the costs of translating the show and producing the DVDs? Almost certainly not. $21,335 for a TV show with 39 episodes (UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie) is not enough money. 3) The numbers vary widely. The lowest price for a TV show is $21,335 for UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie. That's barely more than the $20K for the Air movie. The highest price is pushing a million: $960K for Kurau Phantom Memory. Four of the listed shows cost ADV more than three quarters of a million dollars, and one more is just under. On the flip side, six others cost less than sixty grand. The most expensive show cost ADV nearly forty five times the least expensive. 4) Licensing costs are probably paid by every company in the business. Even MoeNovel (a Pulltop subsidiary) probably on paper pays Pulltop for the rights. This is something I learned when I got a job. I worked for the phone company for awhile, and I found out my department pays another department for the phone lines. This seemed really weird to me; I was like 'why bother?' My coworkers explained that because of the way budgets work, if that division provided the phones for free, their numbers would look terrible. The cost savings they generated would make everyone else in the company look good, but their bottom line would look terrible. This would lead to them getting punished (for being 'unprofitable') for being successful. Likewise, Moenovel is owned by Will. Money that they generate goes into Will's pockets. But they made that money off of Pulltop properties. So the deals need to be structured in such a way that the Pulltop entity reaps the rewards of Moenovel's success. It is probably safe to assume Moenovel pays something to Pulltop. The only company that might not have to do this 'one part of the company pays another' thing is Frontwing, because they might not have set up a different entity to run the overseas business. It's hard to say. 5) The non-licensing related costs are going to be relatively fixed and predictable. They will be a product of the size (in bytes) of the script, with added complications for things like actual gameplay elements. Scripting costs (engine work) are less predictable, but compared to a 45X variance factor in licensing costs? That's not too significant. 6) Licensing costs vary widely. Sol Press seems to be licensing on the cheap (i.e. not going after famous or hugely-successful Japanese projects). For all but the cheapest licenses, however? Licensing fees likely dwarf all other costs associated with the release. Witch's Love Diary's script is about 1.5 megabytes, or about 750K characters. Now I know MG pays by the character (everyone does) but not how much: if they pay 1.5 cents per, that's about $11K. If they pay 5 cents per, that would be about $37K. [Edit: Apparently some companies pay by the character, some by the line. That probably won't change this math too much.] Both of these guesstimates are on the low end of the ADV price chart. Visual Novel licensing fees are going to be quite a bit lower (they have to be, or there's no business to be done, sales just aren't high enough). But still. 7) For most titles, the licensing fee is probably the biggest cost. Since this is the part that's least predictable, it's extremely difficult to say what a given title might have cost.1 point -
Hello ladies and gentlemen of fuwa! Today I will be sharing with you a little writing project I've been working on. Thanks so much to Forgetful Frank for agreeing to edit the book for me! When I started I was editing it myself, which is slow work and I often miss mistakes in my own writing, and so this way it should be a lot better for everyone involved Also, a big thanks to Melowbee for making the illustration for Kitsune! It's a wonderful confidence boost to actually have someone make drawings for my story! On to the book: キツネと私 - Kitsune and me Summary: After spending half a day locked in her clubroom at school, Sakura heads home in the middle of the night, in pouring rain. Taking refuge from the terrible conditions, she stumbles into and old and mysterious shrine. Here she discovers a strange little artifact that she thinks may have been stolen from a museum. Wanting to get it checked out the next day, she brings the artifact home. But as the artifact ends up coming to life in the form of the ditsy, energic and completely stunning Kitsune, Sakura's life will never be the same again... Information on the book: Kitsune and me is primarily a comedy, focusing on the relationship between the main character Sakura, and her new guardian ... fox-girl, Kitsune Mimiko. When writing it I focus primarily on having fun and silly interactions between the two, and purposely try to use clichés from common visual novel, anime, manga and light novel works. It's a fun little project I recently decided to start working on, and it's not meant to be taken too seriously. The story offers elements of comedy, romance (yuri), fantasy and action. The structure is fairly similar to most VNs, in that it starts of fluffy and is riddled with mainly humor, and then it gets more dramatic towards the end. Also, note that this is written in English, though I use certain words and phrases from Japanese. Again, this isn't meant to be taken too seriously. Words such as bentou will be in the book to keep the essence of the "Japanese setting" and words such as "ne" will be left in Kitsune's sentences, as they are a part of her speech pattern and that doesn't translate as well into English in my opinion. I also keep Japanese titles when I see fit, like using Kitsune's name. For these parts, translations are on the side of the Japanese symbols. DIGITAL PDF DOWNLOAD FOR THE BOOK! A sketch of Kitsune made by Melowbee! Art made by Melowbee, thank you x100!! Editing is done by Forgetful Frank, thanks so much for that! Special thanks to Nosebleed for helping me with Kitsune's name!1 point
