[POLL] What's your translation quality cutoff?
Infernoplex and 2 others reacted to sanahtlig for a topic
If I wanted to study the issue systematically, I'd probably break down the issue into its components and individually assess these. For example: Literal accuracy (Is that what this line means?) Contextual accuracy (Was the context correctly conveyed? Did the translator understand the source material, inspiration, or cultural references?) Flow (Do sentences read well to an English native? Do the words and ideas trip over each other, confusing the reader or encouraging the reader to skim rather than read? Does the writing avoid useless repetition?) Style (Does the writing style match the setting? Are character quirks captured well? Are honorifics deployed in accordance with the user's expectations?) Spelling/grammar You'll probably find that readers have different tolerances for shortcomings in each component. In some cases, users may actually have opposing ideas on what is even "best".3 points -

[POLL] What's your translation quality cutoff?
Benji Price reacted to ittaku for a topic
This is in response to the repeated discussion we get over and over about what is "good enough" localisation, and the recent discussion about the "toxic" response to fan translations in the community. The ranking is entirely my own, and is meant to be non-linear. It does NOT equate to the quality of the original VN, and editing has intentionally been included as part of the ranking for simplicity, even though you may get seriously skewed better quality in either translation (unlikely) or editing. Note this is mostly about fan translations, as I think it's fair to be more critical of official localisations but if you want to comment on those perhaps put in a comment. Sorry if the poll is long, I wanted the options to be very descriptive.1 point -
Plk_Lesiak’s Shovelware Adventures: Dharker Studio’s yuri games
Kiwi reacted to Plk_Lesiak for a blog entry
Dharker Studio is one of the better-known development teams on the EVN scene, active since early 2015, but also one that quickly became rather infamous due to their low-quality, fanservice-filled titles. Games such as Sword of Asumi or Divine Slice of Life gathered a lot of attention, as they were released on then still quite barren EVN market and quickly found their way to Steam, but were also quite harshly rejected by reviewers and poorly received by many VN fans. Later down the line, the company focused on purely erotic titles, with much-telling titles such as Army Gals or Battle Girls – admittedly with slightly more artistic(?) success. While most of those games followed a very standard formula, with faceless self-insert protagonists and number of females to “date”, there are also two notable yuri eroge by Dharker: Negligee, released in late 2016 and Galaxy Girls, published a year after that. Today, as the appreciator of yuri that I am, I’ll take a closer look at those two girls’ love-themed games, both of them quite curious examples of commercial success despite many, many problems they suffered from. As a "bonus", I'll include the Negligee's prequel, Love Stories, in the article – the game that earned the unexpected honour of being the first uncensored, fully explicit eroge accepted by Valve for Steam release. While this game's content is mostly straight hentai, it has one notable yuri subplot and features all the girls from Negligee, being worth a closer look from everyone that enjoyed the first title in the series. So, let's get this thing started! Negligee While writing the two dozens of shovelware reviews over the last 6 months I've noticed that ecchi EVNs seem to work better with casual, more or less realistic settings – there are few things more painful than mediocre-at-best writer trying to create a fantasy or sci-fi setting with the use of kitsch, exaggerated characters and all the most overdone cliches, just to give an excuse for persistent close-ups on anime boobs and a few hentai scenes. The game we're talking about now, thankfully, chose a rather simple and straightforward premise and made a pretty decent use of it. As the player, you control the actions of an assistant manager in a lingerie shop (titular Negligee), that is suddenly forced to take over for her boss (who runs away in mysterious circumstances) and find some new employees. Soon, three candidates show up and as they all seem reasonably fit for the job, we have to take our female protagonist (who is, by the way, a quite gorgeously-designed, busty redhead) through a week-long trial with the girls and decide which one of them she should hire. And, as I probably don’t have to explain, the store’s sexy merchandise will find many, many uses throughout the whole experience. And also quite often it will be falling on the floor... Hello everyone! I'm new!
Plk_Lesiak reacted to Wobin for a topic
I just created my profile and I thought I should introduce myself. I'm not used to creating blogs of any kind but I'll try to be active here and to learn how this is done. I'm new with VNs and I'm learning all the terms I can but I haven't played many, so I would appreciate any advice and recommendations. Also just to clarify if there is any inconvinience with my writing, I speak spanish and I am still learning english, I hope I didn't write anything without sense... I just read the rules but let me know if this is not the place i should be posting this or feel free to delete my post.1 point -
Hi, I've enjoyed lurking fuwanovel and it's content for quite awhile now. I just always hate singing up for things, so only got around to making an account yesterday. I'm not into otome, boys love, or nukige, but I'll play pretty much anything else. Even though I'm still somewhat inexperienced with the format, I love visual novels and I can't picture my life without them. Anyway, I hope we get along and have fun together. P.S. I'm not really hot or that young. Sorry about that.1 point

Welcome to Fuwanovel! So, have you read Katawa Shoujo in full yet? If you did, I could recommend trying some other freeware VNs, like Lucid9, Cupid or One Thousand Lies.1 point -
Well, I saw some videos on youtube about Katawa shoujo, after I played that VN I really liked it, after that I started to play other VNs and I thought I could join a community to receive recommendations and talk about this, What got you into this?1 point

Thanks but that's no problem. I already have the Steam version - that's the one I read. Because of that I can't (and really won't) use this key.1 point -

Btw the steam version has some CGs not in the 18+ version, though the scenes with them are probably like 2 or 3 min combined if you don't count where they just put a CG over where it was sprites before. Just wanted to warn you before you give it away.1 point -

Thank you guys! It will be nice to be able to talk about this stuff for a change. Visual novels always feel so underappreciated. Happy to be somewhere where that's not the case.1 point -

I'm at around 28, so I'm definitely not very young here. Anyway welcome to the community and apparently we'd have similar taste in regard of VNs, and if you need some other VNs recommendations than you can ask us about that here. I'm also hope that you'll have fun here.1 point -

Welcome to Fuwanovel, and as for VNs recommendations I think both of Chaos Child and Shibuya Scramble with the former was from the same series as Steins Gate (Sci Fi ADV). Of course while I'm at it you may try Chaos Head as well, considering that it's the first Sci Fi ADV that was came from Steins Gate. I hope that you'll have fun here, and if you need some more recommendations feel free to ask us.1 point -
I'm fine with 5 for FTs, but if you want me to spend money on the translated version it has to be at least 7.1 point

I know some users get very upset when a translated line doesn't match the voices. Others don't really care as long as it makes sense and the conversations are coherent and consistent. Still others fixate on how terminology is translated and get very passionate about it, even begging their boss on their hands and knees to let them translate a term a given way.1 point

The localization of Saya's Song was impressive. If the game didn't have Japanese voices, you could easily believe it was originally written in English.1 point

[POLL] What's your translation quality cutoff?

6.5-7 because I have standards nowadays.1 point -
Kinda true. If it wasn't for the bit about critical plot points, 4 would be my limit for a non-serious (making a career is not even crossing the translator's mind) fantranslation.1 point

[POLL] What's your translation quality cutoff?
ittaku reacted to SaintOfVoid for a topic
this basically stems from companies no hiring real professionals. granted there´s some editors around gifted with good skills, having previously worked in journalism or whatnot, but let´s be honest most aren´t. an a-grade amateurs work is 99% going to be inferior to his/hers b-grade professional pendant1 point -
Your poll is fine for what it is, but I would take caution in the interpretation of the results. Your descriptions pigeonhole users in very obvious ways into the current top-ranked choice. You're not actually gauging what people think, but what YOU think (which is also interesting, to be fair). Also, I know this didn't take you 5 min because it took longer than that to read it.1 point

[POLL] What's your translation quality cutoff?
ittaku reacted to SaintOfVoid for a topic
for fantranslations option 6-7 should be plenty (unless people wanting to sell it), but seriously now anything other than point 9 shouldn´t be acceptable to no one sane coming to professional works, heck since whatever company decides on making money with title xy, it´s automatically every customers right to only expect the very best. period. also as a paying individual i couldn´t care less about any potentially horrendous work expenses, no being profitable any more, or whatever complaint there is when them trying to max out its quality. if no having the means of doing things right, it´s from my point better no getting started at all. in all honesty if 3 or more passes of edits are neccessary, then it´s everyones right to expect it being done, such is the way of professionalism. no whiny blabla like in leylines or chrono clocks case about it no earning them enough money to warrant such things. personally i´m somewhat content with patches for technical reasons, but having to do so even once when wanting to enjoy a good read simply gets me raging...1 point -

Bookshelves are for VNs: Well, not really. I have two leaning bookshelves with VNs, CDs, and (mostly) actual books. The VNs are actually pretty annoying since they're all different sizes. I should probably rearrange them by size or something to be more aesthetically pleasing... the CDs on the bottom row are VN OSTs. Not pictured here: rows of CDs, books, and quite a few more of my bad drawings.1 point -

snowbell55 reacted to OriginalRen for a topic
Sadly, I wasn't able to order a lot of VNs before returning home, but I guess this collection over 3 years is worth mentioning? There are some very light NSFW stuff in this album. A couple of notes about everything. Obviously reorganization needs to occur as the small room has most of that stuff crammed in it. I have yet to purchase my glass cases for most my figures, and as you can see in some of the images, I haven't unloaded all of my figures yet. In addition, the Love Live cosplay uniform is not worn by me. What I want to do is put it on something for display purposes. A culmination of the past 3 years, and with another 4 figure orders on the way so far and a full order of VNs (about 22+) planned for the beginning of 2016, it will only continue to grow larger. Please weeb responsibly.1 point
