AKARI ROUTE COMING TO IF MY HEART HAD WINGS FLIGHT DIARY ON THE 22ND!
Seraphim and 2 others reacted to Mr Poltroon for a topic
There's a lot of crappy translations (at least in the past) and content cutting going about, certainly. But charging 20 dollars (or 16,50 euros) for a VN fandisc is not money hungry or price gouging. Partitioning and making DLC only helps the consumer so long as the overall price of the product is not above the norm for the type of content, and here it is most definitely not. It'd be the same bloody thing if they made no DLC and instead sold everything for the 20 dollars it amounts to, except it'd have taken longer, people only interested in routes other than Akari would need to pay for the route they don't want, and people interested only in Akari wouldn't feel strangely 'cheated'. (The 20 dollars = main game + DLC)3 points -
P/A Potential Ability Port to Ren'py

No, thanks. I'd rather read Sei Shoujo kamige in Majiro engine than Ren'py. But if you find a TLer for it, I wish him good luck :thumbs_up:2 points -
Alternatives to VNDB
Chronopolis and one other reacted to Clephas for a topic
Erogamescape suffers from the results of being directly exposed to the much larger (currently and past, though who knows about the future?) VN market that is Japan. To be blunt, you get people down-voting stuff for kicks, company-owned or hired bots in the hundreds voting others up, and no real effort on the part of the site administrators to rein it in. The troll voting is worse on vndb, to be honest... percentage-wise, there are a significant number of fake players who vote games down or up without even playing them, based on the fact that their votes predate the games' releases (shouldn't it be relatively easy to fix that? oh well). That said, the real issue with Erogamescape is that you can't trust the ratings on anything that is hyped (in other words, by one of the big names before they went down) by a relatively 'big name' company... or anything mainstream, really, if you aren't a huge charage fan. In other words, Erogamescape requires too much filtering and preexisting knowledge from the viewer/reader/observer to even get what the real ratings of a given game are... whereas vndb is a bit simpler. Anything translated, cut off 90% of the ten, 9, and 1-3 ratings (since people either way overrate or way underrate depending on their prejudices and experience), then recalculate the average. The rest, subtract all votes prior to two days after the initial release. That's if you are paying attention to voting scores. VNDB is relatively simple to figure out... just find the tags you have an interest in, then set the list so the highest rated ones (usually translated) come up first, and browse. The primary virtue of the site is the huge amount of basic info it holds on most of the VNs released since VNs came into existence. Also, another way to figure things out is to find a member of Fuwa who shares your tastes, take a look at his vndb profile, then figure out what you want to play from that. The issue with vndb for the whipper-snappers (AKA, 'you young people') is that it is a PC-specialized site. It is meant to be navigated via PC browsers with a keyboard and mouse, not finger-swipes and tapping, so it is extremely unwieldy when done from smaller tablets and smartphones. VNDB's secondary utility lies in the fact that most Japanese games have the Japanese-language (kanji and kana) available to copy to a search engine in order to discover walkthroughs, websites that sell the games by download, and other stuff. Searching a game by the romanized name is generally a dead end for that kind of thing, and remembering the precise kanji for the whole title can often be annoying, so that is seriously convenient, at least for me. Honestly, if you can't navigate vndb, I dunno what to tell you... of all the otaku database sites I've navigated over the years, it is the easiest, at least for me. Myanimelist is a pain in the rear to navigate, as are most of the other anime database sites. VNDB is a breeze in comparison, since it doesn't present you with a dozen similar titles or barely related titles even if you put the exact one in the search box... What is lacking on vndb is decent summaries/intros of most games, since most are poorly-translated translations of the Getchu or official pages, lol. Edit: oops forgot to answer your question in my urge to rave, no, it isn't illegal, since most games have pics on their official sites. What is illegal is ripping the cgs and posting them online for profit...2 points -

Hi guys! I want to say that I'm very glad i found this site. I'm starting a project, which is to port P/A Potential Ability by Empress/Sei Shoujo (for me this guy is the best illustrator for visuals) to Ren'py. I need some help from you guys for this project to happen! >.< I'm currently extracting all data needed.1 point

This is kinda conflicting. Including Akari's route in the original package would mean that they would have to delay the release of Flight Diary until the translation of Akari's route was finished. Sure, it would be classified as a regular release date that way, but compared to the current scenario, it would most definitely be a delay. Judging by what you wrote, it seems like you would be fine with a higher price point as long as Flight Diary and Akari's route were released together. Would you be fine with paying that higher price if the complete package wasn't released until now? (Putting aside the fact that you're not interested in Moenovel's localizations. You can imagine the same thing happening with a title you're interested in, if that helps.) If you're actually fine with both a delayed release and a higher price point, it seems really strange to get upset over the current scenario.1 point

AKARI ROUTE COMING TO IF MY HEART HAD WINGS FLIGHT DIARY ON THE 22ND!
adamstan reacted to Plk_Lesiak for a topic
I don't see anything confusing in this. They released the fandisk portion of the console port. Calling it Cruise Sign would be actually confusing, as it would suggest it's a full re-release of the game with additional content. And this doesn't change the fact that the original Western Konosora release has nothing to do with the console port, which was released two years later. Thus it was also not the version where Akari's route belongs, maybe to the point they would be hard to integrate together. Indeed, the best thing they could do was re-releasing the whole game using the console version and new translation. But even much better companies would be hesitant to take this kind of cost on themselves. No matter how you spin it, I can't see anything wrong with how this was handled, apart from the walling the new route behind buying the fandisk. But even that is not really that egregious IMHO.1 point -

Your argument would be fully valid if this was a multi-route mystery and if they cut out an integral part of the experience, holding it to a ransom. This is just an extra route, in every sense of the word, as it was something added to a later release of the game. Bundling it with the fandisc is a bit weird, but that's not a reason to get over-the-top outraged. And BTW, I think that with all the awfulness of MoeNovel, I think if they handled Konosora today, we would get a direct localisation of the console version, without the weird censorship and cuts. Sadly, it didn't exist at the time and they "improvised", butchering the game. I'd love to see a proper English release of Cruise Sign, but I'm not sure if that would even be commercially viable - it would be a huge undertaking with most people that were interested in the game already having read it. I really don't understand what you think MoeNovel should do.1 point -

DameKoi Release Date Announced
Seraphim reacted to AustriaVNFan for a topic
Ahh, the only VN I have stalled halfway in so far because I started it in Japanese when my proficiency of that language was still too bad. I will surely buy this and reread it. hmm, as I wrote above I got through the game about halfway. I would seriously disagree on calling this pedocrap. There is only one heroine under age and the game goes about this topic pretty seriously and there seems to be a strong conflict goin on in the MCs mind about that fact. I haven't finished her route so I don't know how it turns out in the end but it is far from 'loli H scene crap'.1 point -
Fuwanovel Confessions

Added 4 more Neon Tetras to my Tropical Tank. (that picture is a stock image) Did a water test beforehand, ph and other levels were perfect. The 4 new ones are a tad smaller then the 6 I had in there already (new ones are either younger, or the 6 existing ones have grown somewhat due to being in a bigger tank with far less fish then at the pet store). They assimilated pretty well. Until I turned the lights on.... The 6 existing fish know it's feeding time when I turn the lights on (they basically zip to the top of the water), but the 4 new fish didn't know what was happening (so they hid in a remote corner of the tank). So I feed them more then I usually do, and eventually the 4 new fish catch on. Some of them dogfight with the existing fish, but I can't blame them, and it's harmless. They've calmed down now, and their stripes are bright (if their stripes are faded, they are stressed).1 point -

To be blunt, a database site will never be perfect. VNDB is the best of the group, but that's mostly because there isn't anything else worth mentioning out there... and the effort it would require for a new site to surpass its utility is probably beyond volunteer helpers. Why? Because vndb already fills its niche pretty much completely and mostly free of corporate influence. While it doesn't combine a news site like most other otaku databases do, it doesn't really need one... and the most important stuff (the existence of and release dates for new VNS) are posted regularly. Edit: I should also mention that the main reason I hate erogamescape is for all the horribly wrong tracks it sent me off on in my first two years playing untranslated VNs. I ended up buying and playing horrible games that had been bot-hyped about a half-dozen times, and that still infuriates me, even today.1 point

Alternatives to VNDB
vizualfan reacted to AustriaVNFan for a topic
Honestly, I can see nothing wrong with VNDB: I find it a truly amazing site and hard to believe that so many VNs are covered in an easy to look up way. There are so many trash VNs out there that I surely would have given up on VNs if not for that site. Since I don't use VNDB on mobile devices there is not a single thing I can complain about. I hope the site continues to exist as long as I read VNs And if you are really not sure about the rating of a VN try the VNDB profiles of Fuwa members like Clephas said and see how they rated it. I do that a lot to get an even better idea!1 point -
Alternatives to VNDB
vizualfan reacted to Nandemonai for a topic
Slight correction: Most games have a few sample pics on their official sites. What is illegal is ripping the entire CG set and posting it online for any reason, or downloading the entire CG set to keep if you don't own the game. Posting a few screenshots (even if they're not of the same CG that the developer posts to their site) is much murkier. if your screenshots are attached to a review, that's probably fine. Browsing a complete rip someone else illegally uploaded, in order to see if you want to buy the game, is murkier but probably also fine. Edit: If you were wondering 'what about what VNDB is doing' (by posting sample pictures for many games) - That is probably legal. They are a database, and it's beneficial for a database to be holding a few pictures of the game to give people a feel for what the game's CG looks like, mugshots of the characters in the 'characters' view, and a screenshot of the cover art. At least in the US, they are almost certainly covered by Fair Use. There is no way VNDB got permission from every game company whose software they host pictures of. For one, many of these companies no longer exist. But because VNDB is not directly competing with, or undermining the market for, the VN companies, what they're doing would likely be found to be legal.1 point -

Main heroine is a middle schooler if i'm not entirely mistaken. And predictable drama is also predictable. Not sure if any of it sounds interesting.0 points
