  1. Accel World 2. I've read the first book in a lot of series but Accel World was the only one that really made me want to immediately pick up the 2nd book and keep reading. Not sure if I'll plow through to book 3 without pausing to read anything else though, as some of the momentum from book 1 gets lost and the way Arita acts around the loli girl is really creepy, but it's still a pretty solid series. Bizarrely, I like Accel World a lot better than Sword Art Online, but my taste in LNs is weird to begin with.
  2. In the anime E's Otherwise the entire latter half is building up to a fight between the main good guy and the main bad guy. For the ending they skip the battle entirely and show you a few seconds of what some other characters are doing in the aftermath without any hint as to what the outcome of the battle was. Whee pointless. In the Gunslinger Girl manga the creator decides he's not a lolicon anymore and attempts to violently purge all lolicon from his manga with horrible results, only to also decide he doesn't like the teen spy romance approach either and purge that as well, though this time with a long, drawn out bit leaving the reader wondering why the creator hates all his good characters and loves all his crappy characters. Finally he ends with one of the most bizarre attempts to make a point about nothing I've ever seen. He literally sets up the last chapter to be a 'and the moral of the story is' and then gets a little tongue-tied when trying to figure out what the moral of his blood-soaked, shame-filled, mafia-porn manga was supposed to be. Aishiteruze Baby and Usagi Drop, two fairly good manga about raising girls, both end with the poor girl in the care of someone horrible. Some people who have actually read these manga to the end might quirk an eyebrow at the way I'm phrasing that, but trust me when I say this is the easiest way to explain what is wrong with both of them.
  3. I'm currently on the first on my list of (very many) amazing VNs that has been ported to the PS Vita: Aiyoku no Eustia. I made this my first purchase because the limited edition came with a nice case to keep my new Vita in. I'm about 3-4 hours into it and I'm amazed at how fast it hooks you in and the breakneck pace the story has. It seems like there's barely time to wrap your head around anything that happens with how quickly new things start happening. I also love how it switches over and gives you brief insights into what the girls are thinking to add another layer to it. I wasn't impressed with Eustia when I first met her in the game, until the perspective switched and I saw what she was thinking and realized there was much more to her than met the eye. I've always enjoyed August stuff, and this is no exception. Here's hoping the success of Aiyoku no Eustia and Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai on the Vita will encourage August to finally give us that all-ages port of Fortune Arterial they swept under the rug back when we were supposed to get it for PS3.
  4. I read both, every day. After quitting video games for good because they were taking up too much of my life I now dedicate most of my free time to either reading or writing. For reading I split my reading time between VNs and LNs. The LN series I recommend very heartily is Kyoran Kazoku Nikki by Akira (I mean you read it Akira but he spells his name 日日日 which I'm fairly sure is cheating). It's an amazing and fun series about a 'family' with one ordinary guy as the dad and his wife and kids are all bearers of cursed DNA from an ancient evil that has promised to destroy the world through one of its descendents. So our hapless hero has to try to make sure his whole family is always happy and content, lest any of them decide it's time to destroy the world. He gets little to no help from his scheming megolomaniac of a wife, and it also doesn't help that, all things considered, his kids haven't had very happy lives up to this point. It sounds a little dark but it's definitely more fun than emo, and it's a great break from your typical high school rom-com LN with a deadbeat loner as the protag. Another great series that's tons of fun to read is Yoshinaga-san-chi no Gargoyle, about a family who wins a dog statue that turns out to be a gargoyle, complete with magic powers. Gargoyle faithfully protects the family, and town, from all sorts of strange hijinks that happen. It's very light-hearted and will make you smile quite often.
  5. Exorcist is a good starting point, and you should try at least one of the Paranormal Activity movies at some point in your life (they're one-shot things though, once you know when stuff happens in a Paranormal Activity movie the rest of the movie becomes boring). The Ring and The Grudge kind of set the standard for American-made-remakes-of-Japanese-movies, so I'd recommend both the original Japanese versions and the American versions of those. If you want to go more into Asian horror (less jump scares and gore, more creep factor and twist endings) try Shutter. Or for found footage Japanese fun try Noroi or Occult. Recently the best thing to come out of the horror genre was The Conjuring, also once you've gotten through enough horror movies to get the tropes Cabin in the Woods is a pretty fun send up of the genre. For TV shows, sadly there's not much out there that is what I'd call 'scary'. American Horror Story is a good show, a really good show, but it's not even remotely scary. More just disturbing and weird. I've heard good things about The Babadook so that's what I've got queued up on my playlist at the moment. If anyone needs suggestions I can pop out more, I've been around the block a few times when it comes to horror. It's kind of my thing.
  6. Hi I was looking for a place to talk to like-minded folks about VNs that are on the Vita, since (like it's older brother the PSP) it has become a catch-all for all-ages versions of VNs (the only version I tend to play). I'm currently making my way through as much of the Vita VN library as I can, so I'd love to chat with folks about all these wonderful games as I go along. Thanks.
