What VN's Have You Stalled On? Or Outright Dropped?
MaggieROBOT replied to Thatcomicguy's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Stalled - Tears to Tiara 2. Reason: I actually enjoy the tactical RPG parts, but to reach them I have to read 1 hour of boring talk and I don't really like any of the characters. But hopefully I'll finish it. Dropped? More like "not 100%" - Fate/Extra. Reason: it's not thaaaat good of a game to play three times. Played "Male MC with Aka Saber and Rani" then "Female MC with Archer and Rin" and done. Enough for me, didn't bother with Caster. -
Noticed that the completely white box is marked as dialog (in blue above it)? Mark that last box as dialog instead and check the red options at the top of the window, click the blue save and voila. Remember, the box marked as dialog MUST HAVE some text in it for it to appear.

[Review] Dot Kareshi ~We're 8bit Lovers~
MaggieROBOT commented on MaggieROBOT's blog entry in Maggie's journal
Yeah, I found it a bit lame too. But self insert... It's complete already, VNDB is wrong. All three stories were 100% translated, choices, menus and all that. The only thing that had no way to be translated in game was some audio commentaries that are unlocked after you finish a route (jp voices and no subs whatsoever). Go ahead and have fun! I'll add that to the review, actually. -
I'll admit that I only picked up this otomege because I grew up playing RPGs and I have a soft spot for 8bit era games, even if I was born when that era was looong gone. In the end, the game itself have no 8bit whatsoever, aside of the menu, nor does it have "many H temptations" like the VNDB summary suggests, but it DOES have a lot of RPG-style fun that made me satisfied in the end. (OBS: VNDB says that the translation is partial, but it's actually complete already, for all three games.) Second game's title screen Dot Kareshi is a series of three short VNs by Rejet that tells the story of a girl that played lots of RPG (totally not me) but sucked hard at them (totally not me, seriously this time). Then, she ended up inside the game by mysterious circumstances and found out that the characters she controled become corrupted by her terrible play style. All three games follow the same formula and not even once the game explains to you how the hell you ended up in that situation. Even better, in the second game it pokes fun at itself because of this lame plot device and by the third game they're not even trying. Just by this, you can see what these games are all about: comedy. The game is constantly making jokes about various RPG tropes and situations that I often run across when I played these types of games myself. The corrupted personality of the guys? I would probably have created some of those myself, like the Wizard that was always angry and feeling neglected because the girl always skipped his magic effect animations. Token shota, look how adorable (?) he is. The routes work in a very easy way. Pick the boy you want, clear the quest associated with him and try to score points with him along the way. Don't worry, no gameplay involved. Just don't expect chuuni level of description in the battle parts of the quest, as they are narrated by the characters themselves, describing what item and magic they used or merely saying something like "ha!" when they used physical attacks. Each route have two endings, "stay in the game" and "get out with your boy" and which one is the best depends on the boy, as I see it. But the game thought that getting out was the best for everyone, since it requires you to max the guys affection... And that's another easy feat, because the game have a status screen, so you can pick a choice and see this screen to check how many points you got. Oh, but if you score way too few points, you get a more or less harem (bad?) ending that's really worth to see, especially in the second and third games. About the boys, the cast includes lots of classic RPG classes in the first two games. The first one gives you a Thief, a Wizard, a Hero and a Priest. The second gives you more unusual choices, like a Dancer and a Beastmaster. And when they run out of ideas, the third game gives you the "villain routes", with options like a Slime and even the final boss, that, this time, got corrupted by the action of the girl indirectly. Like the rest of the game, they also are massive jokes. Take one trait of them, usually the one that got warped by MC's gameplay, and exaggerate it a lot. You got the gist of the boys's personalities. The games are very short so the jokes never felt overused and I laughed a lot of the boys interactions, especially during the second game. The party only reached the end of the "game inside the game" because MC was controling them, because geez, they're a bunch of idiots (in a funny and not enfuriating way)! Unfortunately, if you're looking for romance with your fantasy boys... Better look elsewhere, it's the weakest part of the game. Firstly, the main character simply don't exist. She's referred as "You" (but it's totally not me!) every time and she doesn't have a single speaking line. Not only she's unvoiced, she only reacts with exclamation marks and other color coded symbols (like a red one for anger and a pink one for embarrassment) that appear in a bubble at the side of the screen. She actually appears in CGs, but it's always the same generic girl with a shadow covering her eyes. On top of that, because the game is super short, there's like no development in the romance. Sure, you can say the guys are in love with her already because they wouldn't be able to do anything without her, literally. But what about the girl? We have hug and kiss CGs for most of the normal and best endings, but we'll have to just believe that things went well between them... somehow. This line only appears because it was right after a choice. Usually, the protagonist don't say anything. Speaking about the games in separate now... Please note that they have completely independent stories and can be read in any order. The first chapter was the weakest one. I had a few laughs through it, but the perviness of the boys was a bit tiring and not very funny. Thief's (yeah, no one have a name, only their classes, FF1 style) character was also supposed to be all flirty, but he never convinced me, so his character felt a bit bland. My favorite route ended up being Wizard's, simply because the conclusion of his battle was priceless. First four boys The second chapter. THE SECOND CHAPTER. Now, this one is good and definetely the best. It's very very funny, I can't even choose my favorite part of it. Knight is surely the best boy, but meathead Monk is a pervy executed in a way more ridiculous and funny than the first chapter cast. Even the weakest route, Beastmaster's, because he's an ass sometimes, ended up being really enjoyable because of Knight and Monk. And Dancer's random dances just adds to the mess that it's this party. Believe it, they managed to ruin all the sexiness that could be an hot spring scene and I loved it. These guys together are way too funny The third chapter is also pretty good, but not as funny as the second one (but still funnier than the first). Why's that? Because somehow or other they decided to make the villain routes... the most moe ones. The guys are so adorable and harmless, I wanted to protect them all! Of course, the game also make fun of their harmlessness, and I laughed, but it didn't stopped me to find a certain tsundere extremely cute. And just to mention, there's not only villains in this chapter, there's also an NPC named only Villager. He's da man, I'm only saying this. Just leave the "bad" ending for last! The one in the right is not a girl, it's one of the heroes. Actually, it's not a guy either, it's a slime! Soundtrack is fine, and some songs even have some 8bit beats that add to the charm. Voice acting is really good, as expected of some well known names in the cast, like Hirakawa Daisuke (Saint Germain from Code Realize), Toriumi Kousuke (Saito Hajime from Hakuouki), Namikawa Daisuke (Sasazuka Takeru from Collar x Mallice) and Sugita Tomokazu (Kitagawa Yusuke from Persona 5). In the end, Dot Kareshi was an overall positive experience, even more after I finished the first chapter. But even then, it worked well as an introduction to the game. It's a short journey, more or less 2,5 hours for each game (may vary, I'm a slow reader), but full of laughter and a bit of nostalgia, of my own time playing fantasy RPGs. And moral of the story: treat your RPG characters well! Recommended if you like RPG and short comedic novels. Skip it if you want important romance plots and a protagonist that actually exists.

More short free gay things for me to consume. The Emmeline one sounds pretty sweet.
-
I played the PSP version so I didn't have a problem... until I reached the second game. GOD, I SO AGREE WITH YOU, AT LEAST LET ME CHANGE THEM!!! I just wanted to advance text with enter, space, anything other than clicking... OH YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!!!!!!!
-
What are you listening to right now?
MaggieROBOT replied to Snowtsuku's topic in The Coliseum of Chatter
Yeah, this song is really super charming~ I hummed it constantly right after I finished the game -
Damn, it got WORSE???? And yeah, Akshay, put it in the highest difficult, there's no other way to play!
-
I'm glad you got the game!!!! It's waaaaaaaaaaaay better than that anime atrocity that I rage quited halfway because it was so damn fast. I think the pink blood grew on me after a while. The series is so ridiculous that the more absurdities the better. And god, this rhythm game thing is really the worst AND IT'S EVEN WORSE IN DANGANRONPA 2 (I'm playing 2 right now, but no one talk about it here people, pls, don't spoil it for Akshay)!!! All the minigames got way more annoying! If you like case 1, I think you'll really like the others! For me 1 was the weakest because the others are so much fun (is that the right word?) and But I agree that first execution is one of the most brutal. And the fact that Monokuma is laughing through it didn't help. But that's how this game is. Btw, are you playing with the japanese or the english voices? If japanese, the "omaaaaaaaeraaaaaaaaaaa, ohayou gozaimasu!" already is your rl alarm? Good totally not safe trip, man! Hope to keep discussing it with you and may your favorite characters survive in the end, hopefully mine survived!

Information sources on VN fan translations?
MaggieROBOT replied to Plk_Lesiak's topic in Fan Translation Discussion
Saya no Uta's official translation was based on the FTL one and even done by the same guy Piece about this: http://novelnews.net/2009/07/17/jast-usa-is-working-with-fan-translators-for-nitro-titles/ -
No prob, I didn't think that Just stated my reasons clearly to not sound like I was being intolerant saying just "No Traps!". Sorry if sounded aggressive. Join the dark side And, hm, I did this 25 list already, just not rate it in a top... I said order was random, but there's a reason why a remembered Code Realize first...
-
I can include Day's Eye but... I seriously didn't wanted to start this rant but... BL games and Trap games are completely different things, for completely different audiences, with different fanbases, let's not mix the two. In VNDB, Traps (sorry for the lack of a better term) are listed as heroines, not heroes, and they're all voiced by females. Even the shotas in these games I put here are voiced by males. In my eyes, Traps are girls. And that's... not what I want when I'm looking for BL games... I like Trap games and all, and I love Trap heroines, but when I'm looking for BL specifically, for men love interests, I always remove the Trap heroine tag in VNDB from my search... Also, people that like Trap games don't usually look for them in BL games lists... Because most of them dislike BL anyway. And then there's the very small percentage of people who enjoy both, but oh well... I'm really really sorry if this sounds bad and all, but I'm not including Trap games in the list... Because they're NOT BL games just because there's two dicks on screen.
-
I wanted to say "one of the darkest on this list" but messed up. Fixed my wording because I agree with you. And yeah, it's BL, a rape fest and not that good (for me) so I skipped it.
-
Looking closely... I almost accidentally did a sequel to Dergonu's list but with male on male action only. Okay, serious intro now, there's some light games here too. I promised I would do one for BL games after I did the otomege one. It took a while, but here it is, at last! Except this time I made it a bit shorter because a) there's way more untranslated easier-to-be-ignored than translated stuff and b) I didn't read any BL OELVN that was really worth mentioning here and this time Lesiak can't help me. And I tried to focus in games that gives you exclusively male on male content, because we already have plenty of lists full of moaning girls but no one with moaning boys. Again, this is mainly my opinion, but I also heard some other BL fans to create this list. Lastly, I tried to put different styles of games, even if most of them are plotges (charages seems to be a rare trend in BL). Order is random, like always. But I added some descriptions this time! Translated BL games 01 - DRAMAtical Murder Notable tags: Cyberpunk, Virtual Reality, Mind Control Perfect if: you never played a BL VN before, and don't mind a bit of porn. Simply the most popular BL game around and the first BL title for most people. Because the route structure is so easy, it's very beginner friendly! The characters are all likable and most routes have an interesting plot and not only focus in sex stuff in the romance. The presentation is also of excellent quality, with lots of special effects (Well, it's Nitro+ after all). The bad endings can get strangely dark too. MC always on bottom. 02 - Sweet Pool Notable tags: High School, Bloody Scenes, Utsuge Perfect if: you already saw plenty of weird BL around. One of the darkest BL translated, it's really a pool of despair. Its plot also contains lots of horror elements, the complete opposite of the upbeat Dramatical Murder above. And they were made by the same people, geez. MC always on bottom. 03 - Lamento ~Beyond the Void~ Notable tags: Nekomimi Hero, Fantasy, Action Perfect if: you're starting with BL and don't bother with something a bit long, and if you love catboys. A fantasy title with a lighter tone, it follows the journey of a catboy and his friends. It have few routes, but lots of the others characters have enough screen time for you to care about everyone. Even the villains. MC always on bottom. 04 - No, Thank You!!! Notable tags: Perverted Protagonist, Unlockable Bonus Content, Multiple Route Mystery Perfect if: you want more muscular guys and the "female oriented" titles simply don't click with you. This game's target audience is more gay men than women, unlike most of the titles on this list. And we can see this bc MC's always on top (look at the rest of the games, MC usually on bottom), even with those more muscular way-taller-than-him guys. There's more on this game's plot than it seems... Art was made by the same artist as euphoria and there's a body hair option. MG version also have no mosaics at all~ 05 - Hadaka Shitsuji Notable tags: Master and Servant, Sadist Protagonist, High Amount of Bad Endings Perfect if: you have a refined sense of humour and knows that the "comedic rape" tag exists in VNDB. This thing is almost a rite of passage by now. It's weird sense of humor, sheer ridiculousness and good variation of heroes are its selling points. Pretty much a single guy (not girl, guy) made the whole game. And it was localized by MG recently! MC usually, probably, allegedly, whatever Fiddle prefer, on top. And there's a bad ending for a girl that you can totally skip. 06 - Animamundi ~Dark Alchemist~ Notable tags: Alchemy, Graphic Violence, No Sexual Content Perfect if: you never played a BL VN before and it's unsure to pick something with porn, want something that actually have female characters. Some can argue that this isn't really a BL game since there's only innuendo and some slightly suggestive CGs (also there are a bunch of girls here, but none romanceable of course), but I'm not really picking the titles by H-scenes here so it counts! Although, the licensed version got rid of all of these CGs, even some bloody ones, so you'll have to use a restoration patch to see them. Just saying the ending/branch system is confusing as hell, so grab a walkthrough!!! The gothic atmosphere is the best and the art is not your usual anime style! 07 - Togainu no Chi Notable tags: Dystopia, Action, Gang Perfect if: you want something more edgy and angsty feeling and can handle a bunch of rape. Super popular, lots of people liked it, so I guess it goes here, even if I wasn't that impressed by it. But if you want to read everything by Nitro+Chiral, don't leave just this one out! It's good for the dark atmosphere and some "lick each other's wounds" and slightly dysfunctional type of romance... MC always on bottom, except with the shota because a shota is always bottom (well, see next one for exception). Untranslated BL games 08 - Shingakkou ~Noli me Tangere~ Notable tags: Horror, Christian Mythology, Boarding School Perfect if: you want to play something in the dark, and thinks that VN shouldn't shy away from some sensitive topics. This game is fantastic! The horror aspect here is very well done. I recently made a review for it in my blog, but enough shameless self-promotion. If you want to pick just one in this list out of curiosity, pick this one! This is not just a good BL VN, it's a good VN, period. You can choose if MC is top or bottom in all routes. 09 - Luckydog1 Notable tags: Crime Family, Prison, Bloody Scenes Perfect if: you want something stylish, and if you like BL doujins of Vento Aureo. A stylish and action oriented game where the protagonist is simply awesome and full of personality! There's lots of violence, but it's also pretty funny. There's a blog around with translations for some few routes, approved by the developers even (as long it's not patched directly in the game, ever). MC always on bottom ("next mafia boss" and you let everyone have their way with you, yeah right...) 10 - Omerta ~Chinmoku no Okite~ Notable tags: Crime, Slums, Unique Routes Perfect if: you want high amounts of gun fights and very good quality H CGs. Okay, more mafia stories, but this one is less violent, less funny, but cool all the same. This game have a wide selection of unique heroes and they are in opposing mafias. So you can side with your favorite or just say "fuck this" to them and join neither. MC is super likable and badass and there's huge amounts of gun trivia (not that I understood half of it so maybe it's all wrong). 4 routes (okay, 3 and 90% of the 4th) out of 7 (yep, lots of guys!) are translated in VNR subs. MC is top in some routes, bottom in others. 11 - Hashihime of Old Book Town Notable tags: Taishou Era, Murder Mystery, Protagonist with Imaginary Friends Perfect if: you like mystery, colorful art and want something without porn (MG will release an all ages edition on Steam). A work with a very dream-like atmosphere and art that somehow reminds me of some Liarsoft stuff. It's incredibly pretty! The story revolves around a murder mystery and a groundhog day. MG will localize this, they are in editing stage already aaaaaaaaaaaah! MC always on bottom. 12 - Bara no Ki ni Bara no Hanasaku Notable tags: Rape Victim Protagonist, Mystery, Forced Cross Dressing Perfect if: you like very girlish guys and play some matchmaking. No muscular man here despite the name. A drama that starts a bit depressing but lights up when the MC gets his answers. I'm a fan of the writer, she's pretty good!!! The culprit is not that hard to guess, but the circunstances are another story. The MC is very very very girlish. And the most unique aspect of the game? The routes. You can pair ANYONE with ANYONE (of the options they give you, of course). You can pick a boy for the MC and put all of the other heroes together! You can also choose who tops and who's bottom in each pair. 13 - Daylight ~Asa ni Hikari no Kan o~ Notable tags: No Sexual Content, The Seven School Mysteries, Multiple Routes Mystery Perfect if: you want something funny and don't want something heavy on romance. Another without sexual content. And like Animamundi, the BL part is kinda mild and subtle, so much that the first time I saw this game I kinda thought it was some Riku x Sora SFW dj (ha, like those exists). Anyway, game starts pretty funny then the mystery stuff kicks in. Plus that even the inner monologues are voiced, so we have and almost completely voiced game! 14 - Pigeon Blood Notable tags: Horror, Blackmail, Gore Perfect if: you are very very far gone in the weird BL stuff and don't mind the constant abuse. Okay, I love horror games. But this one can really give people nightmares. You liked Sweet Pool? Oh boy, this one is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse. Poor MC is abused and humiliated so much, but he's so pure, the poor thing. Every hero is an ass, but sometimes karma gets them YEAH ALL RIGHT! Features animals ripped to pieces, humans ripped to pieces, demons and cannibalism. Enjoy? MC always on bottom. 15 - Room NÂș9 Notable tags: High Sexual Content, Utsuge, Trapped Perfect if: you want something messed up and like Clock Up. The catch of this game is almost a nukige premise. MC and his best friend are trapped in a room, and to get out they have to pass through rounds of choosing between physical violence on MC (or you, for all effects) or sexual humiliation on your best friend for some shady human experiment. Starts tame, but... well, it's Clock Up, you get how psychologically damaging it could get for them. Mangagamer will eventually localize this, if they ever start the translation. Recommended if you liked the first half of euphoria! MC always on top, well, it's in the summary... Extra Stuff 16 - Taishou Mebiusline (JP) Notable tags: Military, Sword Combat, Undead Perfect if: you like military uniforms and sword fights with zombie-like things. There's plenty of plot and supernatural fun. Also, the characters aren't abandoned in other guys' routes. Focus more on romance than just sex. I put it in the extras because... it's japanese level it's quite high (I didn't read it because of this), but there's a blog around with the translation of the common route. MC always on bottom. 17 - Day's Eye (JP) (Suggestion by SeniorBlitz) Notable tags: Church, Pure Love Story, Crossdressing Perfect if: you like cute things and sweet stories. Something pure for a change, the poor MC dresses up as a girl "to be able to love another boy like a normal person"... Hug these boys, please. No explicit sexual content, despite the VNDB tag saying otherwise. 18 - Suki na Mono wa Suki Dakara Shouganai!! First Limit (EN) (Suggestion by SeniorBlitz) Notable tags: Childhood Promise, All-Boys School, Group of Friends Perfect if: you like charages and series. School setting, best friend acting weird, anime adaptation and translated? How could I miss this??? Oh yeah, I don't play many charages... 19 - Gakuen Heaven: Boy's Love Scramble! (JP) (Suggestion by SeniorBlitz) Notable tags: All-boys School, Comedy, Map Movement Perfect if: you like light hearted stories. Another charage. 20 - Humanoid ~Eternal Ring~ (JP) Notable tags: Robot Protagonist, Only a Single Hero, No Sexual Content Perfect if: you like free games and truly devoted heroes. And obscure free game that I found extremely cute. It's a pure story about eternal love. It's short but definetely worth your time!

[suggestion] New 50 VNs to read before you die
MaggieROBOT replied to Silvz's topic in Visual Novel Talk
My bad, didn't know MGitP was bad >.< But I'm in for Nameless! Objection! Remember Zaka's top 0 list? My thougths exactly. Seriously now, just because something is in VNDB, it doesn't mean it's a VN. Anyone can add anything there, you know...? BlazBlue, Persona 4 Arena and fucking Persona 4 Dancing All Night are there, and even some gatchas, like seriously, who pick those games for the VN parts???? And it's always a war on VNDB about the inclusion of those games... It'll just start an unnecessary war, leave it out. If you want a hybrid of sorts, I suggest Danganronpa V3. -
Your experience of "the visual novel entry barrier"
MaggieROBOT replied to Sayaka's topic in Visual Novel Talk
TL;DR version... what got me into VNs was... Archer from F/SN. Now let me explain. I learned about F/SN and thought "I have to try this shit" but when I saw it was a VN I was discouraged because I thought at the time that VNs were really boring game that having nothing to "play". So I went to the manga version instead (dumb me). I always read tons of manga. And I was instantly hooked! Especially in the Archer+Rin parts (the manga version was a mix of Fate and UBW). They're my OTP and I loved Archer (still love, my precious husbando). Except... they abruptly ended the UBW coverage to finish the manga with the Fate route. And they did that exactly in the day they went to Ilya's mansion in Fate. I was enraged, so so pissed. Without understanding anything, I looked around to understand why they dropped a bridge on Archer's head and found out about the routes and such, that I didn't knew at the time (like I said, I was dumb). My next thought? "I need to read the VN. Screw boring, I need to know the rest of Archer's story!" UBW was as awesome as I expected it to be. I have fond memories of the time I read it. And I found out that VNs aren't boring. And never stopped playing ever since. And then I went down the slippery slope and started reading BL like crazy but that's another story... -
Do you read Bad Endings or Leave them?
MaggieROBOT replied to Thatcomicguy's topic in Visual Novel Talk
I read every single one of them. AND I try to find all of them too. I like things like F/SN that is infested with short bad endings/game overs, I think it's fun when you're actually punished for picking a dumb choice.
