  1. So should we consider official English releases of titles like Clannad, Little Busters or Grisaia kind of happy accidents? (perhaps having anime adaptation helped there to convince publishers...?)

But yeah, all those releases happened few years ago (2015 for Clannad and Grisaia no Kajitsu, 2017 for LB). Lately, SolPress picked up Irotoridori no Sekai (also Favorite's game), and JAST is working (forever...) on Majikoi, but neither seems to be close to release :(  While we're at Favorite's games, Sekai still hasn't fixed Hoshimemo...

In the meantime, FanTL of Hoshiori Yume Mirai has been released, and currently they work on Gin'iro Haruka, but tsurezure scans is kind of exception rather than a rule ;)

So, probably you're right, and translation indeed seems unlikely :(

However, it is totally worth reading.

I'm definitely interested in it. Too bad the download version seems to be DMM exclusive :( DMM is the one JP VN storefront that I can't buy from - at least without using VPNs etc. I can access site and create an account, but whenever I try to buy a VN, it throws out an error message at me, equivalent to "this content is unavailable in your location". No problems with either DLSite or Getchu, it's just DMM being the odd one.

It is also highly unlikely to ever see a translation.

Why is that? I'd be inclined to think that good nakige should be popular. Is it the matter of size?

Edit: Nvm, I thought Sakura, Moyu was 2018.  Definitely Sakura, Moyu, by several degrees above everything else.

A VN with Mahou Shoujo heroine that is nakige instead of nukige? - looks interesting :)

...but looking at its length, it would probably take me something like at least half a year to complete, assuming it can be hooked ;) Nevertheless, added to wishlist, together with Realive. Thanks :)

  4. Finished Lamunation.  Yaaaaaaawn...

I'm a bit surprised, but it didn't work for me at all. Sure, there were some funny jokes, it was nice to spot some of the references or easter eggs, but still I'm utterly disappointed. It's just too random for me, and with almost no story. Seriously, compared to this, your average moege is plot-heavy. It's just collection of loosely connected skits that would work as comic relief in "normal" charage, or at Majikoi exit screen, but it fails as a VN, since there's nothing more.

Also, the release is a bit buggy/messy. I get it that it is low-cost port, and price reflects that, but still... Engine feels unresponsive, and there's quite a lot of scripting bugs - like, often you need two clicks instead of one to advance to the next line, and there are several places when voices go out of sync with the text.

So, sadly, another 6 in a row... It isn't complete trash, and perhaps there are people who will like it, but for me it was a chore to complete...

PS The translation is nice :)

BTW, do you think this girls is more popular in Japan? Her stuff seems decently-produced, but her YouTube and Spotify presence is at the levels of my gf's middle school friend who suddenly started making electronic music and putting it on the internet for shits and giggles. ;p

Honestly, I have no idea. It's officially produced, I bought the CD at cdjapan, but it might very well be just another weird niche. I don't even remember how I found out about her - probably turned up in my Youtube recommendations, after I listened to some 80s stuff.

I often wonder the same thing when listening to all those female singers-songwriters I mentioned before.

  6. I also had my phase for Initial D soundtrack about 12 years ago :) . It's totally over the top, but has its charm. Being somewhat of italo-disco fan, sometimes I return to it.

It is interesting, because in essence it is just sped-up italo disco made for Japanese market. And in case of many of Initial D songs, they are made by actual italo disco producers and singers.

I already mentioned KOTO in "confessions" thread, but since we're at Eurobeat now, she deserves a mention here too:

    Quote

For ultimate cheese, sounding like straight from the eighties, check out girl going by stagename KOTO (not to be confused with Dutch spacesynth band ;)):

I love how they nailed perfectly every aspect of '80s aesthetics (including both beatuiful synth sounds and horrible visuals :P)

This production is absolutely amazing, because it sounds like straight from the late eighties - really, they nailed the sound down to a t.

  7. Recently I tried another 3DEVN - Melody

Unfortunately, it was rather underwhelming experience.

Being musician myself, I hoped that I could relate to MC and the story, but it was very flat, didn't evoke any emotions from me. I was mildly curious how will it unwind - that's why I completed it, but it was full of not-so-well executed cliches. Character models are decent, some of the H-scenes were quite hot, but in essence it was just typical (?) patreon-based borderline-nukige dating sim. Writing itself isn't too good - there were parts that read like some of the '90s JVN translations ;) And repeated errors like "you're" instead of "your" are unforgivable in EVN... If you're selling your game, at least have someone proofread it... :notlikemiya:

It had interesting premise, but the potential has been wasted.

Like I said in the beginning - had some good moments, but overally underwhelming. 6/10

Maybe it's time to return to JVNs ;). I'm thinking about reading  Amber Quartz next.

  8. As for your second question -

    Spoiler

Yes, it's one of those. And they were basically guardtowers. In Dela Grante they were shooting workers trying to escape and probably if somebody unauthorized tried to steal the ore they would shoot them too. In the "current" world obviously only the second function remained ;)

I see that you played the remake. How would you rate the new voices and translation? Also, did they tone down those mood-ruining pantyshots in CGs?

Was Language of Love the VN where one of the characters is complaining about their age although they're only like 22? I seem to recall someone here mentioning that, but I might have it confused with some other VN. In any case, stuff like that makes me feel like some kind of ancient relic.

Our protag-kun here's 23, but yeah, it starts with him complaining about feeling old ;) But he kind of has some reasons for that.

  10. I just finished The Language of Love. It was short, but beautiful - very heartwarming. I wholeheartedly agree with @Plk_Lesiak's review. I liked almost everything about it - Tama's antics, the slow-paced, slightly awkward romance between Mitsuki and Kyouko, very tastefully done H-scene, with nice pillow talk afterwards... And some inspiring thoughts about relationships and life in general thrown here and there (maybe nothing new and unique, but it's nice to be reminded from time to time).

Also, I feel like I could relate to a protagonist for a bit - at least when it comes to loneliness, and being awkward at relationships. (Although I am already way older than him...)

    8/10 from me.

On a side note - the Japanese setting of this VN seems pretty believable, which isn't that often the case when it comes to EVNs from what I gather ;) The only other EVN I read that managed to pull that off was Katawa Shoujo. And then on the other side of the spectrum we have disasters like "No One But You... "

Yeah, I tried several variations where he ended up with either Rena or the nurse (can't recall her name atm), but I don't know what happens if you blow him off right from the start. He and Jonas might end up in a worse relationship, but I'm thinking his health will still improve, since Leah ends up removed from cancer treatment duty no matter which ending you reach.

    Yeah, it seems right -

    Spoiler

she's either shot or gone missing in every case.

The thing that hit me hardest was probably when

      Reveal hidden contents

Jonas comes to Liam's apartment and finds out he's been living like that while keeping up a facade that everything's okay.

I'm glad things worked out for Liam in the end, no matter which route you went down.

Yeah, that was strong. However, for me, the heaviest one was

    Spoiler

The beginning of seventh chapter, right after the fire, the "limbo" part. Realising again and again that Melissa (or Megan) is dead, that feeling of being totally powerless - "I couldn't save her!"... It hit hard.

And yeah, it was really relieving that at least Liam got some kind of happy end.

However, I wonder what happens if you keep being a dick to Liam throughout the whole game - I couldn't make myself do it, but walkthrough suggests, that there is separate ending variation for such cases.

I think that now I'm going to try The Language of Love

  13. Okay, finished Acting Lessons (completed all the routes and got all major endings. Didn't bother to uncover every single of little ending variations)

It was really good. In addition to what I have already said, I agree that they did the protagonist's male friend thing really well.

After hitting bad ending on the first playthrough, the good one was all the more satisfying.

This VN surprised me a few times, made me shed some tears, and had some nice comedic bits as well. With 3D EVNs it's really hit and miss, since many of them are just plain nukiges, sex sims etc, but this one is really one of the gems.

    8/10

Just out of curiosity, what happened to the characters in the ending you got? There are several variations for each of them.

Yeah, I know, the walkthrough lists them. But it's pretty cruel (and clever at the same time), that

    Spoiler

you can enter the character's route while being already doomed to the bad end.

    That surprised me.

    Spoiler

For the first playthrough I got Megan's bad end. Since I fucked other girls, Megan rejected me after final confrontation with Leah. Peter got shot by his police friend. Liam got together with Elise and got better. Protag reunited with Ana. I got "hospital" scene after credits.

And just now I got Megan's good end. NOW WE'RE TALKING! Marriage ending - love'em :D In this case Liam got together with Rena. Peter lives but is in prison. And I got "red carpet" after story.

    Also,

    Spoiler

When doing subsequent playthrough, some of the scenes with Leah give that weird vibe after you already know that she's murderous yandere

  15. As for Acting Lessons, I just finished my first playthrough. Wow... the last two chapters hit like a ton of bricks. And some twists were really twisty.

Also, THE WALKTHROUGH LIED TO ME! ;)

Seriously though, this VN does unusually good job when it comes to the consequences of the protagonists decisions. And I have to go back and get me some good endings now.

    But I'm already impressed.

    Also, (warning, HEAVY SPOILER!)

    Spoiler

You know that running joke in VN communities, that in charage the heroines you don't choose die a horrible death? Well... they played it straight here :o

Someone asked for a similar JVN. I think the one that comes closest from the ones I played (but still very different) would be Yume Miru Kusuri. Themes are different, but the thing about consequences (and having some of the h-scenes already in the common route) bears some similarity.

Have you read Acting Lessons? If you're not averse to VNs in 3D, I highly recommend it.

I'm reading it right now, and really liking it so far. (I'm at 3rd chapter)

It's quite refreshing when an EVN doesn't try to pretend to be JVN, but does its own thing.

  17. Slightly bored by Lamunation, in the meantime I read something totally different - one of the (too) many 3D EVN eroges  - Depraved Awakening by Philly Games.

It was not bad. It somehow reminds me of those 90's VN-adventure hybrids like Three Sisters' Story, Runaway City, DESIRE or even YU-NO - there is some plot there, some mystery etc (in this case, it begins as murder mystery), but everything is very ero-heavy at the same time.

This game originally has been an episodic release on Patreon, and it shows - the art quality evolves throughout the game, as the creator gradually honed his skills. Just compare those two shots of one of the heroines - the first one is from the prologue, while the second one from one of the final chapters:

    106397.jpgdepraved-carli.jpg

It's the same with (animated) h-scenes. The first ones are just a few frames, while the later ones are much smoother.

It wasn't great, but quite enjoyable, and the art in the final chapters looks really good - but, on the other hand, the beginnings are rather bad. It's good that he improved though ;) I think it deserves score of 7/10.

There's also the second game from this creator - City of Broken Dreamers and while it's still unfinished (it's currently at version 0.5, meaning five chapters), it looks really promising, with it's sci-fi-noir ;) setting (reminds me of the Tex Murphy adventure games - it's like eroge version of Under A Killing Moon), great art and animations, much better story so far, and really good synthwave soundtrack. I'm looking forward to the full version - it has the potential for being an 8.
