  1. Hi, everyone! Before I get started on the details, I need to make the following announcement: This update will possibly corrupt your existing saved games and reading progress, caused by my updating the Ren'Py engine I use for making Penlight to the latest version. If this happens to you, you can mitigate the inconvenience this causes by selecting Preferences from the main menu and turning on "Unseen Text" and "Transitions" under the Skip submenu. That'll save you from having to click through every line of text again until you get to the parts you want to read. So yeah, sorry if that causes trouble for anyone. Anyway, on to the update... This one adds a bunch of new scenes for the ongoing villainous storyline, which I'm calling "Copycat" going forward. This brings the story up to pretty much the end of the sixth day, and includes new sprite art, music and a CG made especially for the new content.   2. Hello, everyone! This update completes the scenes for the fourth day of our ongoing villain storyline, along with most of the fifth. I might make a few changes to it over the coming weeks, but overall it seems fairly solid and I should be in a good position to move on to the more dramatic parts of the story and the CGs it promises. It should be a good time ^^ And speaking of CG's we move on to my main regret this time: There's barely any new art to show. There's a couple of minor additions I had made for the previous one, and you'll see that in the new section, but other than that? Those dramatic parts can't come soon enough! Oh yeah, and I added one more piece of background music that I thought would make a decent enough fit for Penlight, if only for variety's sake. It should help a little to break up the monotony of hearing the same couple songs playing on repeat.   3. Hello again, everyone! This past month saw a lot of frustrated plotting over how this new villain storyline's supposed to go from beginning to end. I sort of know how it's going to end, but I got mega-blocked when it came to working out the finer details. As the days rolled on, I sat down to just start scripting as best I could, and what you'll see here with this latest release is some script for the next couple scenes leading up to... well it's nowhere near as much as I hoped, but at least there's a small reveal at the end that sets up the middle portion of the storyline nicely~ Like always you can find this month's release in PC, Linux, Mac and Android versions on my SubscribeStar, Patreon or itch.io pages.   4. Hello, everyone! This update continues the new villain story route introduced last month, where Kyou chooses to stick around after class in the hopes of finding Nozomi again. There's a couple new scenes, taking us up to the first decision point that sets up two separate paths for where Kyou's latest bout of villainy will take us, along with some sketches of a new CG that couldn't be completed in time.   5. Hello, everyone! Over the past month I had a bit of a think about what to do for what would be the last public update of the year. I wanted to deviate a bit from my routine of writing alternate endings for stories that are mostly already written and try a thing folks weren't quite expecting, give you something more to look forward to heading into the new year. So I made the somewhat bold decision to explore a previously greyed-out choice that occurs near the beginning of our story, soon after Kyou uses the penlight on Nozomi while they're cleaning the classroom. That first choice leads to most of Penlight's darker storylines, as Kyou leaves school the next day to get chased down by Hiroko and inadvertently discovers just how powerful his device really is. But what would happen if he's in less of a hurry to head home? What if he decides to stick around in the hopes of catching Nozomi without her friends to interfere? She'd have to hear him out, right? All of that is to say I've written the script for the first two scenes of the Villain storyline's "stick around" route and added a new CG to go with it. There's a lot more to come from this, but I think we're off to a decent start ^^ In other news, the big CG from last month, on Hiroko's Gullible story path, has now been updated with finished art so if you were holding off on reading it before, now's the time!   6. Hello, everyone! This latest version sees the completion of a new story path on one of Hiroko's storylines. Specifically the one where Kyou convinces himself that she's following his penlight-assisted suggestions because she's gullible and takes that belief to varying extremes with her. I outlined it last month, but now there's a fully-written script some sketches of the CG that depicts its most memorable scene. To get to the new path, make the following choices from the start of the game: Talk to Nozomi, talk about the show, visit the sports club, convince her she's ticklish, don't help her, find out how gullible she is, keep going, keep them both safe.   7. Hiya, folks! This month's update completes the script for the latest sub path of the Robot storyline! Once again for those who don't recall how to get to this path, make the following choices from the beginning: Use the penlight, convince her she needs a boyfriend, head home, ignore her, make her think she's my robot, remind her who's boss and have her become my girlfriend. I hope you enjoy(?) how it plays out! I also had a CG set planned for the ending, but it couldn't be completed in time for this releas so I went with showing the pre-production sketches this time around. The finished art will be out for next month. And speaking of next month, we're going to be exploring a path on Hiroko's Trickster storyline for November. This past month has seen me working to finish the new story path I began in the previous release, taking place during the Robot storyline where Kyou convinces Nozomi to become his girlfriend. Working out an ending to this latest story path on the Robot route has been... challenging, but after a bit of brainstorming I did have enough thoughts on it to write most of the scenes and draft out a quick outline for how I think the ending should go. It definitely takes a different direction to the original path, which is what I was most concerned about going into this, so I hope you... enjoy it? I don't know if that's the right word; you'll see soon enough ^^; Oh, and I also had two new CGs commissioned for this new story path.   9. Hello, everyone! For this release I've put together the last little bit of script I needed to complete the Sayori Alter path from last month. I also began writing one of the a new sub-path from the Villainous Robot storyline where Kyou, through nefarious means, convinces Nozomi to become his girlfriend. It's still very much a work in progress, but the initial groundwork has been laid out with a few scenes written. On the art front, I sought to replace a number of scenes that use the standard character sprites with CG art. The climactic scene during the Delusion storyline had its CG extended slightly to cover the entire part where the girls are sitting down, while a number of rooftop scenes throughout the game now use the generic rooftop CG assets after I had a bunch of new expressions added to it. I've always disliked having to use the sprites for these sitting down scenes (and lowering said sprites into the ground to give the impression that they're sitting), so I may make more visual upgrades on that front later. So for this month I managed to (almost) complete one of the remaining story paths on Sayori's original Alter storyline, where Kyou gives in to temptation towards the end, and included a new CG for the fun part of this path. To get to the new writing, begin Sayori's Alter storyline and make sure she leaves Kyou's house as Sayori, and then accept Nozomi's offer of help when she makes it.   11. Hi, everyone! For this update I continued the writing I began last month, so we now have an ending of sorts to the new branch path of the Delusion storyline. I'm not totally satisfied with it and I may add a short epilogue scene later on, but it'll do for now while I turn my focus elsewhere. We also have a new CG set for the Sleeper Agent storyline, which appears during the climactic scene. You can get there by taking the villainous path at the start, choosing "turn her into my unwitting spy" and then playing the story through to the weekend.   12. Hi, everyone! For this month's release I had a crack at writing one of the oldest unwritten story paths in the game. The part where Kyou has second thoughts about what he's doing right at the end of Penlight's very first storyline: Delusion. I haven't really looked back at my old work all that much, so this was an interesting experience. I think what's there mostly holds up pretty well, although there's a fair amount of early installment weirdness with how the characters express themselves. Not to mention the sprite art has advanced so much since those early days! With that in mind, I couldn't resist making tons of little tweaks to the script and sprite animations to bring it more in line with the rest of the game. Nothing fundamental's been changed, but I think it looks a little better now. As for the new writing... well, it's unfinished as I dithered with the script and then completely ran out of time. Still, what's there lays out how things will go for Kyou after making such a last minute swerve from total disaster.   13. Hello, everyone! This month's update sees the completion of a sub path on Hiroko's Ticklish storyline. To find out what I'm talking about, start Hiroko's route and select the "ticklish" suggestion, then choose to help her before you reach the point where Kyou has to decide whether or not to go through with his plan. The new path is the one where he chooses to do so. We also have a new CG to go with the new content, and it appears during the fateful scene described above. That's something else crossed off the to-do list~ We also have one new CG for the gallery. I wasn't able to do all that much over the past month but there's still something to show in this update, which expands on one of the previously inaccessible choices in Sayori's Alter storyline. Now, when Kyou maintains Sayori's altered state through an entire day he'll be able to take one last chance to switch her back to normal before things get truly out of control. Will it be enough to save him from Sayori's ire? Or is he already too late?   17. Hi, everyone! This update sees the new Nozomi Trance story path written up to a conclusion! To find the new path, begin the game on Nozomi's route, give her a reinduction trigger and on the weekend convince her to stay. For a more specific rundown of the choices needed, please check the guide attached to my Patreon article about this release where the new part is marked in green. There are a couple of caveats when playing this story, though. For one thing, while it's fully playable and enjoyable regardless of your prior choices, the much more complete version of the climactic scene can only be witnessed if one has chosen to tickle Nozomi earlier in the story before it branches into this one. The new CG art is in this version of the story and is looking rather glorious if I do say so myself ^^; Selecting the choice that isn't tickling will still give a story that's playable to the end, only the climactic scene contains placeholder art assets and an unfinished script that will be completed for next month.   18. Hello, everyone! For this update I fancied taking a crack at another one of the unethical story paths yet to be written... I'm not sure I even *have* any ethical paths left to write at this point?! In this one, taking place about midway through Nozomi's Trance storyline, Kyou compells Nozomi to stay with him for pretty much the entire weekend instead of fulfilling her prior obligations. It's about 40-50% complete, including one CG, and there's a rough outline written for the rest of the path. Go see! And in keeping with the Nozomi focus, I've also added a new CG to her original Trance storyline. This one shows up in the final third if you want to find and check it off your gallery list!   20. Hi, everyone! During these past weeks I've been working on a second path for Nozomi's Reversal storyline, which I'm sure will be of interest to a lot of you. I had to rush it terribly to get it written in time, but there's a conclusion of sorts so I'm excited for people to check it out! To see the new writing, start Nozomi's route and when she asks, let her direct things for a while and tell her you loved it. I don't think it's as good as some of Sayori's other stories, but on reflection this one's not so bad overall, with some fun character moments and some lovely CG scenes, including two new ones with this update. I was able to turn a lot of that rough dialogue and outline from before into some proper script and, following some of the feedback I got, reworked some of the earlier scenes too to keep the story somewhat more consistent. We also have two new CGs for this path, with one appearing in one of its earliest scenes and one in the most recently-written. See what you think!   23. Hey, everyone! This month saw me pick up Sayori's most recent Alter story path again after having left it hanging earlier in the year. I'd been meaning to get back to it for some time now, and while I couldn't get much dialogue written I did manage to sketch out a tentative outline for the path all the way through to the end! Finishing the thing properly is going to be one of my goals for next month. I also struggled on with one of the branch paths for Nozomi's Zombie Storyline, following some reader feedback I got last time (Hint: It's the one involving a whisper). There isn't much that's new, but I did at least work out the bulk of the next scene which sets us up for some more penlight-related shenanigans in the story to follow. On the art side of things, two new CGs have been added. One for Hiroko's Gullible story path and one for Nozomi's previously-completed path on her Zombie storyline.   25. Hello, everyone! This month's update brings with it a number of new scenes spread across three of Penlight's old unfinished story paths. The highlight this month comes from the fact there's now a new ending written for the Villainous Devotion storyline! To see it, play along the Devotion storyline as usual and towards the end the option for Kyou to declare he still wants Nozomi to be his girlfriend will now be playable to a conclusion. I hope you all enjoy how it plays out~ The other main addition is on Sayori's original Alter path. There's a whole new scene written for when Kyou makes an obviously questionable decision, and is something I know a lot of people wanted to see. It can be found by taking the following choices on Sayori's route: Making you think you're someone else -> Switch her back -> Don't use it ->Apologize -> Hypnotize her again. Oh, and if anyone's confused by anything I've written above, please check out the flowchart game guide linked below.
