Look at it this way: do you have any software which requires Win8? Do you have software that likely won't work on Win8? If your answers are yes and no then go for it, but if they're no and yes, then you'll just making things more difficult for yourself.

What is your system specifications? What exactly do you mean "off sync"?

Make sure you have installed the font. If it crashes you may have to reinstall, since the engine tends to corrupt its NVRAM (savedata) at that point. Also note that installation on FAT filesystem is not supported.

Dropped drive = physical damage = $$$ for recovery Unless you have some irreplaceable data on there, it wouldn't be worth it to do a recovery. Remember this advice to keep your data safe: "If it's not backed up, it's not data you want to keep." If it's a removable hard drive consider getting an SSD instead, those are much more shock-resistant (they have their own disadvantages, but being irreparably damaged in one drop isn't one of them.)

Adding an announcement message at the top of the forums would be a good idea, better than just a silent redirect...

You can try to decrease your screen resolution and see if Windows will expand desktop to fill the screen, or it remains with black borders.
