  1. don't know if I have a single favorite visual novel at the moment, I haven't played enough to decide one and I still see many out there with potential to surpass my current favorites.
  2. yea, most of them run windows 8.1 so no compatibility issues. among the most popular models are the lenovo miix2 and the dell venue 8 pro, both of which are priced at around $200. the downside is the 32GB (or 64GB) storage, which is enough for only 2 or 3 games at a time.
  3. I'd recommend you lose interest entirely. But if you got nothing better atm, why not check out kara no shoujo. you don't want to start a war now do you? key haters arriving in 30 seconds.
  4. I know many players like to use the baytrail based 8" windows tablets. cheap, light and portable, pretty much made just for visual novels
  5. for these types of games, you can pretty much understand everything just by hearing lol
  6. lay your hands off eden* please!!!
  7. It's pretty simple. There are seven routes, or I should say seven points of view, you start with the prologue and for each route, you need to get to the True End to unlock the next one. That's the basic idea, you'll see for yourself once you play. I'd really recommend Subahibi: simple plot, lots of nonsense but unique and interesting, stands out from the other denpa (IMO さよ教 is overrated, 終ノ空 and 101 were poor attempts).
  8. Depends on how well it's implemented. In the case of Grisaia, the common route was excessively long and boring, with little plot or character development, overused humor, etc. It eventually started irritating me and carried over to its sequels, seriously, I got sick of all the girls except his sister, a rather new character. In most cases, I would say unless the common route has a lot of plot development or introduces overarching concepts of the entire novel, it should stick to the goal of introducing the characters and their backgrounds before they lose the reader's interest. The plot of the common route is also restricted in the way that the protagonist cannot swing too heavily to any particular female character since the route must chronologically precede all character routes, thus romantic content is heavily restricted.
  9. IG, N+, liarsoft tend to have decent ones
  10. started with Les Miserables ended with Lolita
  11. Yes, happens when I'm designing a digital circuit while reading a VN that isn't infodumping me.
  12. I don't know VNDS or the type of special effects you're talking about but I did play several dozen games on my Android phone's ONS emulator. Basically it only has simple functions such as making image layers appear, disappear, or move them around, no smooth fading, or any of the fluid visual effects that the game's Windows version has with DirectX. That's enough for most VNs I played on it: D.C. II, Yosuga no Sora, and all that Alcot crap, I didn't play the original Aiyoku no Eustia but it's still awesome on my phone, since the CGs and sound effects are all there. But when it comes to games with more complicated UIs, for example, Rewrite, the ported ONS version just sucks, full of bugs, poor controls on the map, etc. Another thing to keep in mind is that many of the ONS games don't have the [Extra] function, that is, the CG and Replay mode. So yea, that's ONS. If you're using Android, you can also use PPSSPP to play the PSP versions although no R18 content.
  13. Alright, finished 3 routes now. The downsides are also pretty clear at this point. The most glaring fault is having too many H-scenes. While it is realistic for couples to have sex frequently but sex isn't the only way to portray love. They should really save some CGs for the more warmhearting, less direct, romantic scenes. Like most VNs out there, it also has a general lack of content and side characters. Each passing day does not really come alive, it feels more like several lines of diaologue. So to summarize it, this is still your typical purelove novel, still has its many flaws, but one step in the right direction.
  14. I know it's released yesterday but after finishing just sora's route, I think this could be worthy of discussion. While the common route and initial character route was typical of a highschool pure-love VN, what I especially liked was the After story set several years after college where more mature themes like work and marriage are involved. While most VNs end shortly after a confession and a conflict resolved, perhaps with a brief epilogue or FD, this one takes things further and it's essentially a sequel of almost equal length with the same slice of life narration style, set years later, quite rare. I can name a few works, say clannad, irohika, hoshizora EH, that also take us to marriage and family, but those are reliant on a supernatural setting or a dramatic plot to retain the reader's interest. Few of this category hold the same slice of life-ish pace or the same everyday events you'd see in reality to keep us reading. I think this isn't bad at all since I've always been more interested in the life of our characters as/after they become mature adults, not highschool kids. So I hope I can see more of these time lapses in future works, and especially FDs. The love confession and all that is just a beginning, but most novels only leave us with a fairy tale ending "they lived happily ever after" (probably).
  15. what irritates me is that the author likes to pull lame comedic sequences over and over again in especially serious moments, ruining the atmosphere and dragging down my suspension of disbelief. this is the same flaw that the recent anime Akama ga Kill suffers from.
  16. curry rice, and some variants of Udon
  17. I'm more interested in Minato's other upcoming work. Majikoi was good but really, all those FDs.
  18. does happen to me, two reasons. 1. For some, I tend to lose interest at the near end and start another one. though that typically happens when things are getting repetitive or the climax has passed. 2. There's a comfort in having another VN to play (continue) after this one ends, thus eliminating the feeling of emptiness of being dragged back to reality after finishing a well enjoyed VN.
  19. not really a fan of utsuge but seems interesting, I'll check it out, thanks. ahh, mangagamer is really planning to release all of OD's novels ain't it. but I've always preferred playing the original, so I wouldn't consider that.
  20. I just finished Hello Lady yesterday, it's better than I thought though the art and eru's CV kinda bothered me. Now I was planning to play 翠の海 but some of my friends recommended me 僕が天使になった理由 as one of the most underrated works of 2013, but again, that's coming from a diehard WA2 fanboy, so if anyone played this, please share your opinion.
