Let's all be honest here, how many people here actually pay for VN's here?

I do a mix of pirating and buying. I buy translated vn's if I have the currency, and if I don't I pirate them and buy them later. For JP visual novels with fan translations, I normally just download the fan translation and not buy the JP version, unless I feel like it is something I must own. But then I run into the issue of having pornography on display in my room, and that will have to wait until I move out. So, I have yet to buy a already fan translated vn, but I do want to someday. And if the time comes and I put in the effort to learn Japanese, I will of coarse be buying JP vn's.

In the end if I have the money I buy the visual novel! Supporting the companies that bring them over is a must in my eyes.

I feel like this is an accurate representation of what I do, but who knows.

I have a nude pillow case on my wall and I still live in my parents basement

I've only happened to get 4 at same time, all thanks to my japanese friend who sent me those for lower price (had to cover sending costs tho -__-) cause needed money for new ones.

Mostly pirate but I buy them when I get the chance. I have a few on my steam list and I have a limited edition copy of Steins;Gate with physical copies of Saya no Uta and My Girlfriend is the President. I don't mind pirating them because I will usually always buy them later when I can but I don't always have the money.

I usually pirate, but that's because I don't feel like dealing with all the crap involved with buying vns abroad.

The only vn I can remember paying for is Majikoi A-1, which, unsurprisingly, I bought after I came to Japan.

I don't own a credit card, though... waste of money.  I prefer to use money orders and prepaid store credit.  Money orders are better, if you buy everything at once...  Occasionally, I'll pick up a set-amount vanilla card for companies that don't have a store credit system or accept money orders, though.

Edit: lol... I am kind of wishing I had dlsite store credit at the moment, since several VNs I think look interesting are only available on the Japanese side for download...

Only bought the steam ones, and will only buy the ones I previously read and think its actually good to support the producer, bought KonoSora complete box the other day and also both Hoshimemo games.

I pirate all my visual novels. Not because I like pirating or even because I want to, but because I don't have any money to pay for legitimate copies. If I could pay than I would.

I read quite a number of console VNs, so naturally I buy all of those (or get them from PS+, but money goes in there too). Also bought Muramasa and Senshinkan for PC, because I wanted to have those shiny boxes and artbooks....

As for English VNs.... got VLR from PS+, and bought the first two Corpse Party games. That was about two years back though, I don't think I'll be buying anything English now.

Only ever pirated Tsukihime, but in my defence I can't find that anywhere. At least, not for ridiculous money. Everything else I've paid for, if only as a mark of some respect for the ridiculous amounts of work going into making one.

I have strived to maintain a mindset of "Support the industry in order to have better products and translations." This applies equally to all of my fandoms. I'll pay money in order to show my support for VNs, prose fiction, comics, music, video and board games, etc.

My most recent VN purchase was the Vita edition of Hatoful Boyfriend. Prior to that, I bought a copy of Oreimo Portable from a dealer at a local fan convention, and I decided to preorder physical copies of Norn9: Var Commons and Code: Realize.

There have been times when it's difficult to justify purchasing a product. My top five issues that get in the way...

1. If the DRM requires that I need to log in, or start up while online, I will probably not buy it.

2. If the English release has an egregious amount of censorship, I'll likely avoid it.

3. If the translation is known for being a trainwreck, I'll skip it. (I learned this lesson after Lux-Pain.)

4. If there is news indicating that the product could have had an official release, but it was cancelled, I will not be inclined to import a copy. (For instance, Nanashi no Game could have been released in English... but it apparently wasn't interesting for the people who test screened it.)

5. A cartridge game specific problem. Most games for NIntendo DS and older cart-based systems only have a physical version, and it's not possible to modify a cartridge with a fan translation. So while I have thought about buying the original version of LovePlus, that purchase would mean that I would end up with an untranslated cart that I can't modify.

By the end of this year I will definitely have put over a thousand into VNs and other games for this year...and considering my job I probably shouldn't be but hey my food budget consists primarily of ridiculously cheap crap so that I can put the extra money I have after bills towards my hobbies.

I buy when I can, and don't buy when I can't, to put it simply. I don't have a steady income, and any money I do get right now, as a general rule, goes towards college. If I have a gift card or something, I'm more than happy to buy VNs with it- I just bought Saya no Uta the other week, I own hard copies of almost every Key VN, and I have stuff like Eden on Steam.

Basically I've been trying to start pirating less, but there are still cases where I just don't have any other options, whether it's because of availability or price.

I've bought KonoSora, that's about it. Mostly because I don't have the money to buy much, and I don't have the willpower to resist reading them at all cost. That being said, I will be picking up physical copies of Comyu, Majikoi, Majikoi S, and Katawa Shoujo (If I can get my hands on one) once I have spare cash in a month or so.
