Kelebek1 Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 Because that's the point, it has to be interesting. People don't want to read about some very mild bullying. It's like saying, god why do so many people die in action films. Or, why are all these people cheating on their partners in this soap opera. That shit doesn't happen in real life which is exactly why it's interesting. It's there to be entertaining, and being slightly mean to someone isn't very interesting to read. Of course they have to go off the deep end and push people super far. I don't know why you think it must be real, compared to every single other genre which you presumably know isn't. Suspension of disbelief isn't consistent through every genre. I expect a bullet shot in Van Hellsing to do a different amount of damage compared to something like Band of Brothers and I expect gravity to work differently in anime compared to live action. In a slice of life school drama I expect people to act a little more like people not soulless puppets from a slasher movie. Bullying is something that many people have experienced and suffered from so they can already identify with the bullie, having it cartoonishly over exaggerated just seems unnecessary. There is already emotional weight in isolation and verbal abuse. You don't have to artifically try to up the ante. Chronopolis 1 Quote
the_dive Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 Gotta admit, as someone who attended a public high school in East Los Angeles I also failed to see bullying like in YMK and other VNs. Anecdotal, I know. Quote
CeruleanGamer Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 You just activated my trap card! I consider bullying in VNs a "try-hard push" for drama plot especially if the one bullied has experienced it for several years past and still dragging their feet with it. (I'm looking at you KoiRizo and Konama-chan!) It's more relevant if it's in the school setting and is actually happening at the same time. Quote
Kelebek1 Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 I think the bullying in Fraternite was done really well. Quote
Down Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 If you want a VN that deals with ijime taken to pretty damn high levels try SubaHibi =) (one day the TL will come out >.>) Also fun fact of the day: the author of Shingeki no Kyojin was ijime'd when he was a kid and it influenced him for his manga. It kinda explains Eren's character. Quote
Mkilbride Posted October 7, 2015 Author Posted October 7, 2015 I went to a school that had stabbings and gun threats, along with supposed gangs, in the middle of the worst city in my state. Never saw bullying as I mentioned, so it always seemed to me like the Media was overblowing it. Quote
Mugi Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 It's the reason the stuff with Miyako and Koyuki in Majikoi hit me so hard, and the reason I still haven't been able to bring myself to read Yume Miru Kusuri Quote
Mkilbride Posted October 8, 2015 Author Posted October 8, 2015 Well, realistic bullying I could deal with and would emit a realistic response. I am reading the Miyako route of Majikoi right now and I totally not caring because the story seems so unbelievable, the other girls routes I've done so far had legitimate issues to work through, hers don't resonate. I did like the one in Yume, it was well done. Miyakos feels like "Oh, look at all these 8 year olds who shoudn't even have a concept of life and death yet, wanting their classmate to commit suicide and doing terrible things to emotionally damage her for no reason" ectera. I can't buy into it, it's not well written, nor does it make sense. When I went to school any teacher who even saw a student get made fun of by another would give that kid detention and call his parents. Quote
VirginSmasher Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 The thread topic reminds me of Aeka's route from Yume Miru Kusuri. That ending was so satisfying, but the bullying in that route was pretty extreme as well. Quote
Nosebleed Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Alright everyone, this thread has been extensively cleaned up in a last attempt to do something wtih it.I understand many of you have several life experiences related to bullying; however, the main focus of this thread is still VNs and how bullying is portrayed in the medium. While correlating it with reality by giving concrete examples is something to be expected from a topic like this, I do want to re-state that this is not meant to be a discussion about people's own experiences with bullying. If you must give an example from your own personal life, please do correlate it with the topic at hand rather than just stating your story for the sake of sharing it.I don't mean to belittle anyone's experiences, but this thread is not the correct place for such discussions, and it's especially not the place for needless flaming wars on the topic of bullying either. So with that out of the way, if you still want to discuss bullying in VNs, feel free to post, and please be civil with each other. If it turns out like last time again, there won't be a second re-opening. With that intervention, I guess I can come back. Don't worry, I'll behave this time.Is there a bully in visual novel where they are actually named (not part of bunch of "mean kids trio"), not faceless (hi bully, welcome to the faceless cast! Also, meet faceless protag!) and actually a significant character/antagonist and not just a background extra who disappears after a few scenes? It seems to me that most bullies in visual novels are just one-hit wonders to cause dramas and emotional distress to characters and don't hold any importance to the plot.
