InvictusCobra Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 (edited) I've not played many JRPGs so I'm probably not the best person to be posting this but:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqiG20EZyOQ It can get really irritating and is a cheaper plot denouement than Chinese or Indian child labour. solidbatman Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 As for the video, I don't like Jim Sterling (or any of these youtube gaming critics like him and Total Biscuit), but the video is titled nit picking. He's just bitching to bitch. Is it an overused trope? Yes, but at least its an upbeat, positive one regardless of the bullshit. Quote
Clephas Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 It does get old... it is way overused. Going into that 'friendship will save the world' crap by saying your friendship will let you stand against the evil master Gobyldygook (or whatever) is just tiring now... Darklord Rooke 1 Quote
CeruleanGamer Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Funny and ironic because Japanese people tend to be more lonely than most people and with black people and Americans being the friendliest. Not sure if the Japanese are trying to preach friendship or wanting to show something they desire the most themselves. Quote
Down Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 (edited) Well, upholding positive values is outdated after all. Gotta be all grimdark and edgy. The world outside is cold and cruel. Or so those people say, they do seem to have a much shittier life than I do though. Also, >playing games dubbed Edited October 21, 2015 by Down Quote
Darklord Rooke Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Yeah, JRPGs are sometimes embarrassingly cheesy, although the same can be said for anime (shounen and shoujo) as well. It's that sort of stuff which helps perpetuate the idea that JRPGs are for youngsters, and I'd really wish they'd knock it off. Okay, I just finished listening to that video and I completely agree with the first 3 minutes of that video (it got a bit forced after that.) And I really do mean 'completely agree', I have the same complaints with saccharine story themes like the ludicrously fictional power of Love and Friendship.EDIT: Double post to give the mods some work. You're welcome Quote

You're welcome oh come on americans are worse, the whole "The military will fix it" has been part of american made games since the day agent smith die (Matrix reference). oh and dont forget the whole "sneak away from mom and dad", we know you guys dont do that (some dont) if you guys ever did, you'll gonna have a bad time.so ya since japan is forces in having better stuff, america is forces on being a badass. Jun Inoue Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 I think it's kind of ironic that the "power of friendship" trope kinda undermines the development and progress of the heroes. Go work your ass off for who knows how long, finally defeat the evil guy, get it attributed to genious, a heroic ancestor, power of friendship or love, whatever. The thing is, it's almost never the heroes winning because they deserve so. Quote
