Eurobeatz Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 As the title states, this is a thread for discussing things that you dislike in VNs. There are two major things that I really hate in VNs: 1. Anal Sex and Scat I detest anything to do with anal and scat in ero scenes. I cannot fathom why any guy would want to stick it in a girl's asshole. For me even the thought of anal is disgusting, and I skip every anal ero scene I come across. And don't even get me started on scat porn. It is hands down the most disgusting thing I have EVER come across, and I've been on /b/. I can handle tentacles, gang rape, and all other extreme fetish scenes I have come across, but when I see a hentai/eroge character even touch another character's asshole, I feel like puking. 2. Kuuderes who Stay Antisocial I love a good kuudere route; the idea of getting to know an antisocial girl and pursuing a romantic relationship with her as she opens up to you really appeals to me. Yet some kuudere route authors insist of having the kuudere in question continue to be cold towards the protagonist, even when they are dating. The main appeal of kuudere routes in my opinion in seeing how the normally emotionless girl comes to feel affection for you, and show her emotions when she is with you. Thus, having a kuudere's behavior not change makes the route seem utterly pointless to me. Quote
Mephisto Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 1. characters who don't undergo moral/personal development self explanatory Quote
Beato Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Voiceless protagonists and unrealistic sex scenes in serious stories (THERE IS NO WALL). Quote
Wahfuu Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Storyline H scenes that act as fanservice H scenes, if that makes any sense. Cartoon villain antagonists Quote
Ashadow700 Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Pretty much all kinds of H scenes. Call me insane. Quote
RusAnon Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Pretty much same as anime: 1. Tsundere + spineless protag. 2. Character's stupidity/irrationality. 3. "Accidental fall on her breasts"-level jokes and comedy. Quote
Zakamutt Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 *Protag being oblivious to love without reason despite the heroine being painfully deredere. I can accept SelectiveObliviousness... if done well. Major offender: Shoichi-Kanade in Deardrops. *Girls saying no all the way through sex scenes (well, fully avoiding this is pretty rare...). *Protagonist suddenly becoming stupid for no reason (hi Kotarou in Lucia!). *Lack of saves / save slots. There shouldn't be any limit on saves in a PC release. *(NScripter specific, usually) no BGM fade --I could go on and on about system problems Quote
Kaguya Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I agree perfectly with Zakamutt and Eurobeatz. However, I also don't like Tsunderes. They're just painfully annoying to me. Other thing I really dislike are sound effects in H or gory scenes. Kaguya 1 Quote
Snowtsuku Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I agree perfectly with Zakamutt and Eurobeatz. However, I also don't like Tsunderes. They're just painfully annoying to me. Depends on the level. Something like Kirino is annoying as hell. Quote
garejei Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Oh, there's worse things in VNs than scat. Extreme guro coupled with cannibalism was among the worst I've seen. (don't get me wrong, I'm not actually into shit like that. But you get curious sometimes. Needless to say I'll not venture into that direction ever again.) As for me - I'm not a huge fan of H scenes in general. Not the porn itself but the writing. Quote
RusAnon Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Extreme guro coupled with cannibalism Which game is it? Saya's cannibalism is quite light, for example. Worst gore I've seen is Dustmania, but its worst because its low-quality (and I'm not into literal brain-fucking). Quote

Sen Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 1. Pointless H-scenes or just about any H-scene that hasn't been properly "built up" by the characters involved - Case in point: FS/N H-scenes. Horrendous. 2. Romance arcs with loli characters - I just can't get into those, I guess. Quote
blaiseantoine Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 i usually dislike hentai plots full of pin ups , fetish story ,stupid and hilarious characters expecially teen agers student story , i prefer historical, mistery, fantasy ,yaoi with deep psichological intrsopection not completely incentrated on sex-scene Quote
garejei Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Which game is it? Saya's cannibalism is quite light, for example. Worst gore I've seen is Dustmania, but its worst because its low-quality (and I'm not into literal brain-fucking). http://vndb.org/v10293 It's not as over-the-top and wtf as Dustmania (I was foolish enough to google for screenshots), but it's fairly messed up nonetheless. Zalor Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 1) Cliched characters, situations, and plots bother me. Obviously there are usually some clitches in a VN (like how characters are usually always attending high school), and I can accept those. But when a VN doesn't attempt anything deep or unique in its stories and characters, that is when I am bothered by it. 2) Plot and character holes are like nails on a chalkboard for me. It's what ruined G-Senjou no maou for me. 3) Bad writing is a turn off, not only for VN's but for anything really. That's all I could come up with for now. Also: Eurobeatz, what type of f*cked up VNs did you play that had scat sex? lol. As for regular anal, I don't see anything wrong with that, (I actually think its kind of hot. Probably shouldn't have admitted that.) Quote
RusAnon Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 http://vndb.org/v10293 Ah, that one. Didn't finish it yet myself, but I thought there was only one cannibalism scene, and it wasn't very detailed. Should read it properly then. Quote
Metaler Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Jarring scene/chapter transitions are one of my biggest pet peeves with any kind of fiction. Quote
InvertMouse Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Which game is it? Saya's cannibalism is quite light, for example. Worst gore I've seen is Dustmania, but its worst because its low-quality (and I'm not into literal brain-fucking). Hm, let me look up this title out of curiosity... REGRET (TUT). I'm obsessed with stories that get straight to the point, so I dislike VNs that have a lot of fluff. Unfortunately, a lot of VNs do contain a lot of unnecessary scenes and rambling gags. Many players enjoy them so their existence is understandable. Quote
Supah Kawaii Weeaboo Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 * Too much slow pacing. A few years ago, I was more patient. But I have many more options for entertainment besides VNs. If the slice of life scenes and narration just drag on, or if the plot takes a long time to get anywhere, I will usually lose interest. * The same few settings and premises. In the very beginning of the EVN scene, I remember one planned project in which the creators talked about setting their game in a high school, since they didn't want to set it in a mysterious mansion (as if there were no other viable options). If you're a halfway good writer and you have some confidence in your audience, then you can have your story take place anywhere, with any kind of characters. And while it's easy to sell a love polygon or harem, there's plenty of other premises. * Same old graphics and style. I'm usually willing to give creators a pass if they're creating freeware, and have little to no money to invest. Apart from that... we're no longer limited to the graphics restraints imposed by '80s to '90s computers. For instance, we have polygon graphics now. They might have looked bad over a decade ago in Tokimemo 3, but LovePlus and Photo Kano show improvement. And as for art style... while it might not be easy to sell a game with an aesthetic similar to modern anime/manga, there's a lot more options for freeware creators and people willing to take a chance. Minimalism is an option, as are photorealism, 3DCG, cartoonish exaggeration, and more. * Release format and pricing. I paid a modest amount for the English iOS version of Planetarian, because I should be able to re-download it at no extra charge even if my current computer or iPod stops working. Likewise, I paid a moderate amount for Inside the Grassy Patch on DLSite for the same reason. Some of the indie games/VNs that I've purchased are easy to reinstall and update. But it's difficult to justify paying a lot for a commercial game if I can only install it on a single computer. And unless I have already downloaded an English patch, I won't purchase an import game which is story-driven or text-heavy. i usually dislike hentai plots full of pin ups , fetish story ,stupid and hilarious characters expecially teen agers student story... I somewhat agree. I rarely enjoy a porn-without-plot story. Comedy can be great, but I have seen a lot of bad examples in which the humor is random, inane, and/or tasteless. While I do like plot-driven stories, interesting settings, and introspection... I also like some upbeat teen romance stories. They can be a guilty pleasure, and every now and then, I will find one which I can recommend to other fans. Also, in regards to an earlier comment... cartoonish villains fit in if the entire fictional universe is a world of ham. The enemies in Sakura Wars 5 are either laughably stupid or so serious they're ridiculous. Quote
StrawberryRollerskates Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 I've not read through many VNs yet, since I tend to be a picky reader. I enjoy spooky and some scary, but I don't like gore. I've gone out of my way to avoid guro and the like. For H stuff I like light hearted romance, but it seems difficult to find not as plain stuff that's not nukige and worse lumped in with not cool stuff...and the while girl saying No all throughout bothers me on a couple levels. I know it's partly a difference in views on sex and relationships, but it's... gah! Voice overs where all the girls sound the same and squealing. Bad writing or characters that never grow. I know a lot of that spills over from animation as well. Quote
shcboomer Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I think for me it would have to be VNs with H-scenes that seem to be inserted randomly without any reason. In other words H-scenes that have no business being there that ruins the pacing. Quote
Forythos Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 I hate rape, bestiality, enemas, tentacles and shit like that. I haven't read any heavy guro VN, but I already visited Waita Uziga's website a few years ago and that was enough for me. I also dislike sex scenes with loli characters that look too young. Which is probably why I disliked the vast majority of LB! Ecstasy's hcg. Quote
Rairu-kun Posted May 29, 2013 Posted May 29, 2013 Probably lack of voice in some VNs. Horrible OSTs. I could just turn on my own music, but after hearing Rewrites OST everyone else was put to shame lol. The overly large boobs featured in some VNs. Bothers me in anime too. H-scenes that aren't necessary. (most aren't.) Sometimes I feel like some of the conversations are useless and begin to think its a chore to read, but I guess everything has that point. Might be a personal pet peeve, but I dislike poor art. Irritates me and then I can't read. Which sucks for me cause then I can't read old VNs with good story =\ And that's about it.but IMO I think VNs beat Anime for me. Just like how the book is always better than the movie. Quote
