I'll start with the question: Does Japanese have swear words?

We had a discussion before, like a year ago, about the incosistency with which some VNs bleep out the words for genitals despite being rated 18+, but I don't tink anybody really went in depth as far Japanese profanity goes.

Now I'm not so much asking people to list down the swear words they know in Japanese, but after googling around I can't seem to find what one might consider "taboo" words like the word "fuck" in Japanese. Words that, if uttered in front of your mom, will probably get you slapped.

I'm talking about words outside of the realm of the human genitalia, of course. Almost every single expression I found on google is one I'd heard at least once in either anime or manga, which makes me think that, albeit offensive, it's not something one would "censor out", and thus is not really "viewer discretion advised" type of profanity.

Maybe I'm looking at it from the wrong angle, but does Japanese have any really profane words/expressions that can't be said on TV or something without being bleeped out, or is it because anime always airs at night that it's okay for it to have all these "offensive" expressions I keep finding on google?

All I seem to take from my google adventuring is that Japanese hate any explicit words to do with sex/genitals, but pretty much everything else seems to be fine, no matter how offensive it gets, and even the genitals are okay in some scenarios.

I would like to hear people's input on this matter, especially if they're native or know Japanese for a while now.

Edit:

Some more independent research has taught me that Japanese does have really offensive expressions, including a lot of the ones I found, it's just that they don't have the level of stigma with profanity in the media as a lot of Western countries do, but if said on the street to someone, they're just as susceptible to hurt someone's integrity.

It seems that the West, due to being heavily influenced by Christiniaty, places a big stigma on profanity, as opposed to Japan where despite there being offensive expressions, only really censors out genitals because of their weird porn laws.

Although I didn't want a list of words as I mentioned in my first post (I don't think a lot of people read posts these days), that page actually had a nice external link which talks about words that can't or should be avoided in Japanese broadcasts, which is more along the lines of what I was looking for.

For the record, I'm not looking for the most offensive expressions ever, but rather I wanted to know how the Japanese handle profanity.

Well as far as i know at least from vns I haven't seen any swear word really strong like you can hear here in Argentina (or any spanish speaking language) or english. There are some swear words that if you say them here you can get arrested because of how strong they are, in Japanese the worst I've read or hear is kuso kurae which literally means eat shit (it doesnt seem so strong of an insult :P at least not for us...) Like you said when they censor words they only censor manko or chimpo but im sure is because of the porn censorship in general.

For example in vns when you see slut or bitch translated into english the words they use are often words that you can also use in normal situations without a bad connotation, just to give a little example you cannot use bitch in any other way than what it actually is...maybe joking with close friends but still the word doesnt loses it original meaning.

this is interesting

I really rather doubt this. Christianity in the West stretches back millennia, right back through the Dark Ages, for example. Do you really picture people during this time, as they're scraping the guts off their sword and scrubbing at the intestine juice on their tunic, to go "oh good heavens, please watch your tongue! There are GENTLEMEN and LADIES present!"

I find the concept to be fairly ridiculous. Instead I would wager the Georgian and Victorian eras are probably to blame, these eras emphasised delicacy and manners and there was an expectation of politeness, so I can easily imagine uttering vulgarities to be a massive faux pas (especially for the upper class) during this period in history.

To extend upon that, there was a period in British history where the common people overthrew the monarchy and a puritan named Cromwell was in charge. What happened during this period is touched upon in this funny, funny song:

Basically everybody was forced to be pious, and everything halfway fun was considered a sin. (HE BANNED SPORTS? HOW DARE HE!) During the Restoration period, after everybody wanted their monarch back, I think everybody started revelling in debauchery. En masse. Obviously this causes a lot of problems, and the Georgian Era’s politeness and correctness was a response to the previous over-indulgence in debauched behaviour. The Victorian Era carried that on (I think) and we’re not very far removed from the Victorian Era, and the first half of the 20th century had some fairly similar attitudes.
