Pabloc Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 MoeNovel didn't provide anything that can be called "English translation of KonoSora". They released a very poorly written fanfic.
Freestyle80 Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 to think their translators actually got paid for that ;d
zerovirtue99 Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 So, I can't say I've read through all of the text in these 25 pages, or even past 1 page of text, but if it's already been officially translated, then isn't it out of Fuwanovel's jurisdiction to provide translation? Well I took law for about a year and from what I understood by sleeping in class was that as long as you have your own legally acquired copy of the game, it's all right to modify that. I think its okay to share that modification with others, but it gets a little obscure when you're providing the whole copy (including modifications) to a large amount of people for free. I'm not too sure about that part. As long as the patch requires that people buy the game themselves, I doubt any serious legal issue can happen. Even if an unknown party comes in and releases a patched version of the game, the translators can't be held accountable for that since they weren't affiliated with the party.  There's also the problem of the patch integrating 18+ content into the game. Since the official release is intended for 13+, teenagers will have the ability to view 18+ content, which they shouldn't be able to view.  Edit: Just checked and apparently 12-year-old kids can buy the game so it would be 12+. Not a big difference, but just in case.

Not a big difference, but just in case. The game script is a copyrighted work in of itself and redistributing that even in another language is a breach of copyright. Although you may need the game to make use of it anyways, this doesn't really matter in digital copyright law, which is a total mess in Japan and the US. There's also the issue that it's a derivative work, which unauthorized derivative works can be illegal under copyright law. This is mostly tangential to the actual conversation, of whether or not the retranslators are in the right. Legally speaking, no, but the point is that neither is a translation of a game without an official English release, so there's no difference here compared to what is usually done. Morally speaking, I guess you can say the same thing, this project is fine for the same reasons any translation project is fine. It actually requires the Moenovel version of the game for it to work.
SanadaShadow Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 And how will such a patch be applied, then? One that adds entirely new scenes... It sounds more like one of those GBA FE ROMHacks than a VN.
Pabloc Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 If anything resembles FE's case, is actually MoeNovel's hack(job). We are turning it into a proper English version of KonoSora. It doesn't add any "new" scenes per se, it just restores the original content that was cut/censored. And in the final version, the translation will be largely unrelated to MN's... thing.
Zakamutt Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 The patch actually doesn't really contain the scripts and such per se. Know why you have to run that xdelta program? It patches files by applying changes to them, not by replacing them by predetermined content (might be a bit more complicated.)
メルP Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 (edited) The patch actually doesn't really contain the scripts and such per se. Know why you have to run that xdelta program? It patches files by applying changes to them, not by replacing them by predetermined content (might be a bit more complicated.) You can't really say that... Or rather, I'm not sure what are you trying to say. The content is predetermined of course... specific xdelta files can be only applied to specific source files and always produce deterministic results. Also I don't think it really maters how you distribute something. I don't see how xdelta is different from distributing the set of bytecode scripts in .rar and make some software insert these on user's machine. Both of the approaches are essentially the same. Same data is involved, same results achieved, just approach is different. Edit: consider text file. you can make change to it by using notepad and copypasting something from the clipboard, or you can do it by altering some bits without seeing the actual text on the screen. Later is what xdelta does. But does it really matters in terms of copyright? Edited July 8, 2014 by メルP
Pabloc Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 so more or less u guys are re-TLing it xD Yeah, I get the impression that what I'm doing is far beyond a TLC already. -.-'
RusAnon Posted July 9, 2014 Author Posted July 9, 2014 The patch actually doesn't really contain the scriptsIt does. Rio.arc, which contains script files [the text] is included completely, not xdelta-ed, since is entirely different from both moenovel and japanese versions.
Zakamutt Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Misunderstandings clarified, I guess. Not that I really care either way, though I think rusanon did insist on a diff patch for some related reason? Not sure...
RusAnon Posted July 9, 2014 Author Posted July 9, 2014 Misunderstandings clarified, I guess. Not that I really care either way, though I think rusanon did insist on a diff patch for some related reason? Not sure...I've used xdelta mostly because it required least amount of effort on my side.
Yukihime Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Hi, I just discover this light novel. Sorry for the bad quality of my language ( I'm not english) But, I asking myself how can i play to this game... I need to download the patch but i found the first versions... T y in advance for your answer.
Tatsujin Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Update on how the second patch coming? Is it on hold? Slow progress?
Pabloc Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I should finish the 5th script from Kotori's route somewhere around tomorrow, this will leave 4 scripts to do (probably ~4000 lines). In other words - slow progress. Â This is a good occasion for a little summary I guess. It took me 1 year to go over ~20k lines. That's not even half of the work. And while common route had just bad, blind idiot translation, from what I saw in Kotori's route so far, more than half of it is screwed up beyond salvage and requires total re-translation (I posted some samples on VNDB, feel free to check them out - http://vndb.org/t5268#11 ). Most people claimed that only Ageha's route is awful, but right now I'm almost sure all routes will require MUCH more work than simple TLC to turn them into something actually passable. And at this point, I'm working on it pretty much alone. Â This means that with the current pace, there's probably no way the second patch will be finished within a year (unless other routes are in a better shape, but I highly doubt it). If it will be finished at all, that is. I joined this project just to TLC the scripts, not to re-translate half of them from scratch... I'm not planning to drop it just yet, but I can't promise I won't change my mind when I start another route and it will turn out to be as utterly ridiculous as Kotori's. I'm stubborn as a mule, but my patience has some limits. Â In other words, I could use some help. It would really speed things up if somebody went through at least 1 or 2 routes (the twins?) and fixed them up a bit. And by "somebody", I mean - translator. Those may be in a decent condition (TL quality fluctuates a lot here), but I'd assume they need a re-translation as well, so just editing them won't help much. If anyone is interested (it's a good chance to get some TL experience), contact RusAnon and get the scripts from him. Â We will need some editors too, but that can wait until the TLC/re-translation will closer to the finish.
Freestyle80 Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 didnt know it was that bad, sorry to hear  so ur in this project alone now? thought there were 2-3 others anyway good luck !
Mr. Meogii Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 to think their translators actually got paid for that ;d  Lmao every one I know on this forum hates Moenovel's work XD
Aggressor Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Pabloc, how about just dropping this one and start TLing something else from scratch since you're basically doing it anyway? Don't you think it'd be much more rational use of your efforts? Most people have already finished Konosora, and I don't like the idea of you getting very little appreciation for your really big efforts.
Zakamutt Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I suppose a partial with Kotori done is some kind of milestone at least. What do you think about a VNAer blog post mentioning that the konosora project would like more translators? Idk if I'd do it grand style or mention it in a more compact update, but you'd probably get some recognition (especially since I think many think it will be fixed... e v e n t u a l l y... if you know what I mean - I know I did.) Â Could also change the thread title to mention it if you ask the mods I think.
Pabloc Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 @Aggressor Well, the 2nd patch wasn't aimed at those who don't care about TL-quality at all to begin with, so it doesn't really matter how many people have read it already. Â Jokes aside, I have improved my skills quite a lot while dealing with this project (well, that was my objective all along), so I feel like I owe this VN a bit. That's why I'd like it to have a passable translation eventually. This, and I simply don't like leaving stuff unfinished. On the other hand, I do want to move on and TL something scratch, that's why I'd like to speed things up a little. Â @Zakamutt I guess a small mention on a blog wouldn't hurt. I don't think I will have enough patience to keep working on this alone for another year, so an additional translator or two would really help. I'll ask around some friends, but I doubt anyone will have time...
Mr Poltroon Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 I can't believe I missed this whole thing. I've been playing this game, and just got to Ageha's route. You can probably guess how I got here, then. ;P Â Anyhow, I wish I could help, but I don't think there's anything I can do other than showing my support. Nevertheless, here you have it: Go! Go! Go! You can do it!Â
Ezeefreak Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Hey Guys...  I'm too lazy to go through all 26 Pages so i will ask you instead  Is there anyone who are working on translating the Fandisc "Flight Diary" ?  Thanks & Greetz
