Some titles feel really out of place, like a Family Project in the top ten. And almost none of the most popular story heavy weights made it in the list - neither Stein's Gate, nor Umineko, nor Fata Morgana?! But a simple rapige sitting on first place, uh huh... No Clannad, Planetarian or Rewrite either, but Venus Blood -Frontier- somehow made the list, while sitting on 7,5 average and 7,2 bayesian on VNDB... Maybe they don't list games without 18+ content? That's the only way I can explain differences this deep. It would also influence the kind of people that used the site in the first play, attracting mostly seriously ero-oriented players... After all, there's not really a "VN fandom" in Japan the same way as there's one in the West, so probably it's more useful to see this ranking as one from eroge fans specifically? Oddly enough, it works every two years or so for a few months and then gets blocked again. I think I like the list with >500 votes more, because it filters out most special editions of popular titles. Ever 17 made it three times into the other list. Wouldn't be surprising, Higurashi has a fairly popular anime, while the one of Umineko looks like Ryuukishi07 would have drawn it himself *shudder*. And popular animes matter a lot, even in the VN scene. Quote

I'm sure that ended up being a factor in it not being on even a list that includes All Ages stuff. And Higurashi just generally seemed much more popular there where it's the opposite in the VN scene here. Quote

As for the list itself, I guess it's adequate enough to list all of the best VNs throughout Heisei years although of course not everyone choice was included in the list. Some of those examples are Higurashi, Umineko, Fata Morgana, and Steins Gate, which to tell the truth make sense seeing that most of the votes goes to ero because after all the site itself was called Erogamescape, which mean that they prioritized the votes in eroge so of course they less care for console game (Although it didn't mean that they didn't have all age VN entry). About Umineko, actually the first seven parts did well received in Erogamescape as well, although they did have the problem with the last part in that the score was at around 58 the last time I was checked. Lastly I want to say that while the list is adequate enough, keep in mind that some VNs might received differently in between Japan and the overseas. One of those example are Trinoline in that it manage to get Erogamescape score at 76 while VNDB score was at 6.86 as of now, which to say was that apparently the voters at Erogamescape like the beautifully drawn sex scenes at Trinoline. I with the Japanese for this one as I'm too have not good impression with Umineko especially for CH 8 while Higurashi maybe one of the best VN of all time. What make Higurashi better than Umineko because the writer bother to write explicit conclusion rather than "ha, I am more clever than my reader so try to guess what the ending is" B horror movie style IMO. Thanks for compiling this, really helping. I hope there are some localization company who have an adequate resources (money, labor and time) dare to translated the remaining one. It's so sad that only Moege and to the some extent Chuuni genre receive more localization company attention these day. Quote
