solidbatman Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 http://www.reddit.com/r/YouShouldKnow/comments/2a82sm/ysk_daemon_tools_lite_the_popular_image_mounting/ Just a heads up that the free version of Daemon Tools is now likely bundled with Malware. Kendjin 1 Quote
Aniki Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Well, I guess I did the right choice by pirating the full version, huh? Quote
Darklord Rooke Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I heard the same thing a while ago, so I use Alcohol 120 Quote
Snowtsuku Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Glad I just use the one included in Windows 8. Quote
Nosebleed Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I've heard this for a while and I saw a user posting about DT malware here on the forums a while back too and if I recall correctly they got it from CNET. Glad I never use Daemon Tools anyway. Quote
Mephisto Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Yeah this was a thing a while back, and CNET has not been safe for a long time now either. Too much bloatware. Quote
DimDito Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 ...Which is why you torrent the pro version. More features, less malware, do yourself a favor. krill 1 Quote
Ceris Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Wait, Windows 7 can mount ISOs? That's what that page is saying. Quote
Steve Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I'd still recommend using DT but an older version: http://www.oldversion.com/windows/daemon-tools/ Don't forget to disable updates. Quote
Nosebleed Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 7zip can mount ISO files, I found that it doesn't work with every single ISO (I couldn't mound Ikikoi with it) but most of them work just fine. Of course if you want to mount MDF files and other types of files then it won't do but it's a quick solution if you just use ISO files. Quote
Mephisto Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Wait, Windows 7 can mount ISOs? That's what that page is saying. Windows 8 has a built in ISO mounting system that works pretty well to be honest. Windows 7 does not as far as I am aware. Quote
Zakamutt Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Does muvluv actually install with anyhthing else on 64-bit? I think Kendjin was having trouble with some other program as DT did some emulation or w/e, but not sure really. Some fuwan releases actually include a DT lite copy, and iirc the version is fairly high. Might want to look into it (YU-NO uses 4.46.whatever, etc.) Quote
Kendjin Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Yeah Muv-luv can be a real pain without DT. The issue with DT lite apparently is that if you choose to not install the ADware, it was still installing it. Frankly most free tools nowadays are being bundled with some software, mostly due to adverts on websites being blocked so much, so they are using this as a new revenue stream. Quote
Mephisto Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 http://www.neowin.net/news/daemon-tools-knows-what-you-mounted-last-summer I think this is important too (and old news) Quote
Mr. Meogii Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 The issue with DT lite apparently is that if you choose to not install the ADware, it was still installing it. No adverts. And I have Bitdefender installed on my laptop. Every two days it does a full system scan and it has never brought up DT lite as potential malicious software. Quote
Kimanor Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 No adverts. And I have Bitdefender installed on my laptop. Ah but the question is, did you install Bitdefender after you had daemon tools installed? It's always hilarious to read posts on the internet saying anti-virus software doesn't remove virus' already installed. Quote

Mephisto Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I was of the impression daemon tool's just installs a loader for malware along with the installation for daemon's tools itself, not that daemon tools itself is a malware. Quote
Mr. Meogii Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Even if that is true Bit defender should be able to pick up any malware that would have been installed. Quote
Darklord Rooke Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I am both paranoid and a pessimist, so I didn't want to take any chances. Quote

Zodai Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Recently used the trial of Daemon to get Muv-Luv installed. T'was the trial for the pro-version, so hopefully I didn't encounter this. Also, Windows 8 has a built-in mounter? I was unaware of this. Information? Quote
