Tay Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Strangely (and perhaps hilariously?) one of the most successful threads on the boards (referring to google presence) was an old (and closed) thread about whether or not H content is a good thing for VNs. I get an email every now and then about that thread, including this gem from "Anonimous" (I take no responsibility for the spelling): Wuts fuwanovel? Why do you want to take hentai out of hentai games? bet youd rather every game had a option to take hentai out even thou it would make lots 5 minutes long Yes, Anoni. Yes I would. I'd support it because it would make them easier to share and play in public, and because the RenPy already has this built-in and it works very well. Here's what I'm curious about: how would you feel if there was a H content toggle in VNs? Meaning you could freely turn it on or off. Thoughts? Feelings? Outrage? Down Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Outraged. MUH PORN! ... I don't actually care, I don't think I've read an H-scene in a VN since my 3rd one and teh ctrl button works great. I've already played VNs in public too, just lower the screen and press ctrl when you know the H-scene is coming I honestly don't know how "toggable" H-scenes would affect the stigma on porn in games and how more share-able it would make them. Zalor Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 That's pretty funny. I think I remember that topic... For most VNs I think having the option to toggle H scenes would be great. Some VNs like Kanon really don't need them, and could benefit from a toggle (the H-scenes were terrible in Kanon). But some VNs use them as a part of the story. Particularly one rape scene in Swan Song is instrumental to the story. But definitely most nakige could probably benefit. Quote
Miulei Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I think that as long as the H-content doesn't contain anything that's absolutely integral to the plot, then there's no problem with having an option to turn it off if you don't want to see it. It might even make more people play certain games. Obviously, this option is useless for something like the Nukige, which is 80% H-scenes, but for other eroge category VNs, it might be nice. I personally would like it because most H-scenes in VNs are very badly written, especially when it comes to knowledge about how vaginas work, which makes me a little mad to be honest. Anyway, having a toggle would be a good idea. Zakamutt 1 Quote
Darklord Rooke Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I skip most H-scenes in visual novels so I think it's a good idea. Quote
Eclipsed Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Options are nice. It allows for the best of both worlds- people who want it leave it on and people that don't turn it off. Btw, how did anonimous get the impression that fuwanovel wants to "take hentai out of hentai games"? Quote
The Major Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I'm pretty sure everyone will agree that having the ability to toggle h-scenes is a good thing. Everybody wins that way. Rose 1 Quote
Tyrael Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I feel like most H-scenes are in bad taste so that would be a great addition I remember Katawa Shoujo having a 'disable adult content' option, it would be similar to that, right? Quote
LinovaA Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 You see, I think that is a wonderful idea. I would use it sometimes, depending on various factors (like if the scenes actually contribute to the story or not). However I would want this feature more for my friends than myself. I have this one friend who would like to get into visual novels, but they don't really want to deal with the hentai scenes and they tend to keep their distance from VNs because of that. I have sat them down and gotten them through a few all ages VNs like Rewrite and Little Busters, but in general the H-scenes stand as barrier against them actually getting fully into them. Quote
Tay Posted January 20, 2015 Author Posted January 20, 2015 I remember Katawa Shoujo having a 'disable adult content' option, it would be similar to that, right? Yep. Katawa Shoujo was made using the RenPy engine. Quote
Mr. Meogii Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 If you take Out H scenes, Visual novels are still very much enjoyable. It's just really Unfortunate/fortunate(What ever way you intend on seeing this) that some of Us like to be perverts sometimes. So no. If there was an option to toggle of or on H content I would not be bothered in the slightest! Quote
Nosebleed Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 It's useful for those who don't enjoy h-scenes Personally i wouldn't use it but having it there wouldn't hurt me so~ Removing h-scenes = Riot Having an option to disable = good enough Quote
Mr Poltroon Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I don't actually care, I don't think I've read an H-scene in a VN since my 3rd one and teh ctrl button works great. I've already played VNs in public too, just lower the screen and press ctrl when you know the H-scene is coming Exactly my usual course of action. Quote
nohman Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I for one embrace these anonymous, public shamings. You should start a Tay's Hatemail Corner, even.As for the question at hand, I'm not opposed to it as a feature. It's one I wouldn't use, but it don't care as long as it doesn't take away from me as a consumer. pokemon123 Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Definitely. H scenes can make me never see the character the same way again and not in a good way.(some not all), Quote
Zakamutt Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I like hscenes, but sure; would make people whine less and usually miss very little. That said actual rewrites would sometimes be better? Quote
Clephas Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Not a bad idea, though in cases where sexual content is necessary for the flow of the story, denying that someone got raped, had sex, etc. is counterproductive, though there would be no need to show the details. Some of the roflz I got from some of my favorite VNs were from h-scenes. For instance, in Dies Irae Acta Est Fabula, the final H-scene between Kei and Ren is... so rofl-worthy. It perfectly exemplified their relationship's vector and added a lot to the scenes that occurred after it. At the same time, Dies Irae didn't suffer much from the removal of H-content in Amantes Amentes... so I'd have to say 'execution matters' and leave at that. Quote
Fiddle Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Forcing people to see h-scenes is wrong. Forcing people not to see h-scenes is even worse. A toggle can solve both of these problems. -_- Quote
Deep Blue Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I always skip them, they are really awkward, with weird sounds most of the time I hate the kissing sounds (like in porn movies) *slurp slurp* D: I read the log after the scene just to be sure i didnt miss anything important. I dont like them but i dont want them to be removed either, a toggle to turn them on or off should really be the solution. Control Key Quote
hellish Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 As someone who doesn't like h-scenes but finds himself surrounded by h-scene proponents in this forum, this feature is exactly what I want. Everyone wins. Quote
hsmsful Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 so instead of pressing ctrl for 1 min or less, I will be able to save this minute? brilliant Finally I can use this minute in doing something productive Seriously speaking thou I think it has been said by everyone already but it is a win-win situation , people who don't like h-scenes can skip them and people who like them can watch them. Quote
Katatsumuri Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 It's great. And on the plus side it removes the risk of whining from people who hate them, and it does the same with people who want to keep them, that would otherwise occur if H-scenes were removed/kept in. Quote
