    Fuwa Flood Thread

I'm pretty sure one of the things involves debugging because there were some reports of the new boxes disappearing or glitching. I mentioned this to Tay and he said he'll take a look at it in the maintenance. There's some info to entertain your curiosity. Also i propose the "maintenance incoming" banner be changed to: "The lolis are working hard for your sake. Hang in there, Onii-chan~"

  2. I was reading Grisaia no Kajitsu and I felt compelled to start this thread to highlight an issue some people might not be aware of. So the purpose of this quick thread is: A) Make people about the common practice of inserting government propaganda into TV shows, movies, and other media (like visual novels.) B ) Point out a few examples of blatant propaganda in visual novels. C) Quick rant about how this propaganda seriously degrades readers’ enjoyment of visual novels (whether they are aware of it or not). -------------------------------- Part A: How government propaganda secretly inserted into TV shows Here is an example of anti-drug propaganda inserted into TV shows: http://www.businessinsider.com/the-end-of-the-above-the-influence-campaign-the-office-of-national-drug-control-policy-loses-its-media-budget-2011-12?op=1 Here is an example of global warming propaganda inserted into TV shows: http://hauntingthelibrary.wordpress.com/2011/01/28/cdc-funding-fictional-warming-propaganda-on-tv/ More reading on the subject: California Asks TV Networks to Push Obamacare In TV Shows - With Your Money http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Hollywood/2012/09/15/California-Asks-TV-Networks-to-Push-Obamacare-In-Sitcoms Propaganda Selling the NDAA though TV SHow Government Propaganda To Infest Network TV Shows http://www.prisonplanet.com/government-propaganda-to-infest-network-tv-shows.html -------------------------------- Part B: Examples of propaganda in visual novels (these are just a few off the top of my head) Grisaia no Kajitsu Here is some global warming propaganda in Grisaia no Kajitsu (which I am currently reading and prompted me to write this post) Problem is that man-made global warming is not real. The earth has warmed just 0.5 degrees over the past 50 years. (See IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE THAT OFFICIAL PREDICTIONS OF GLOBAL CLIMATE WARMING HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHICALLY FLAWED) That section Grisaia no Kajitsu also contains propaganda promoting the safety of “tuna scrape”. “Tuna scrape” is NOT safe. (See Tuna Scrape: The Food Safety Risk Lurking in Supermarket Sushi). Governments have been allowing cheap unhealthy/dangerous food substitutes into the food distribution in order to keep down inflation. Meat that was formerly used in dog food is turned into “pink slime” and served in school lunches. Leftover tuna that was formerly used in cat food is turned into “tuna scrape” and served as suchi. To know more about the discusting things governments have been allowing into our food, try googling: “pink slime” “meat glue” “tuna scrape” “crushed cochineal beetles” + Starbucks “horse-meat scandal” “dog-meat scandal” “fish fraud” Etc… There is also a fair amount of anti-drug propaganda in Grisaia no Kajitsu when you look for it. -------------------------------- Da Capo II An unavoidable part at the beginning of the novel features some global warming propaganda: -------------------------------- Hoshizora no Memoria Huge amount of “UFO nonsense”. Whenever a character believes in government conspiracies and cover-ups in a visual novel, that character is always an idiot who “believes” in UFO. The message is simple and powerful: Someone who believes in government cover-ups = raving lunatic Unfortunately, government cover-ups/conspiracies are real, especially in Japan. Try googling: “government cover up fukushima” The purpose of all the UFO nonsense in Hoshizora no Memoria, Da capo II, and other visual novels is a direct attempt to discredit whistleblowers who warn about Fukushima, and other government cover ups. -------------------------------- Part C: The rant The worst part of this inserted government propaganda is that it is always the most unreadable part of the visual novel. Since it is government propaganda added to product (visual novel) after the script is written. These sections stand out like a soar thumb in terms of poor quality and being out of place with the plot. Did anyone enjoy that “tunafish man” part of Grisaia no Kajitsu? Did anyone enjoy that endless UFO nonsense in Hoshizora no Memoria? Knowing that these sections were added for the sole purpose of deceiving the reader only makes it worse.

    Greetings to you

Thanks for all the welcomes! Experiences in Japan, huh? Hmm... Well I've lived in Okinawa for 7 years, and my wife of 5 years was from Nara. I can't speak much Japanese, though now that I no longer have a live-in translator, I'm starting back up on that. One thing to remember is that Okinawa isn't really Japan. Well it is, but in the same way that Hawaii is the United States. It's a place that Japanese people go to on vacation(traffic gets absolutely horrid here during Golden Week). The culture is notably different from what you would find on the mainland. In addition to the original Okinawan culture, the island technically belonged to the United States until 1972, and with the relatively high number of military bases on the island, there is a greater American influence in the areas surrounding those bases. Festivals occur here quite frequently since we get both Japanese and Okinawan occasions to do so(as well as a couple of western influenced ones like Oktoberfest... I think the islanders just like festivals). I used to go to them fairly often wearing a jinbei, but sort of stopped after my marriage got more contentious. Now that I'm single again, I might start going more often. I have traveled to mainland Japan a couple of times to visit my then wife's family and do some site seeing. Nara, my ex-wife's hometown, was the capitol of Japan during the 8th century(known as the Nara period), and is the site of Todai-ji, a temple that houses the largest bronze Buddha in the world. surrounding that temple is a park where deer roam around free. They have no fear of humans, and will come right up to you if you have food(stands along the park sell biscuits for 100 yen). Some of the deer will bow to you for food, and some more aggressive ones will nip at you until you give them something. Also, apparently my daughter is ridiculously cute or something because tourists kept wanting to take a picture of her. Not too far away from Nara(about 40 minutes by train) is Osaka, the second largest city in Japan. It's a port city, and the sushi there is delicious, with some rather generous serving sizes in a lot of places(I got served nigiri with the fish drooping all the way to the plate; you couldn't see the rice at all). Another common dish I love there is okinamiyaki, a sort of fried pancake with cabbage, seafood and pork in it(there are different styles in other regions, but I love the Kansai style best). I went shopping in Yodobashi Umeda and Nipponbashi(also known as Den Den Town, and similar to Tokyo's Akihabara, albeit on a smaller scale), though I didn't really end up buying anything. While I was there, I visited Osaka-jo(one of the many castles in Japan) and Universal Studios Osaka(where I had the very odd experience of watching Hello Kitty sing and dance to a very upbeat rendition of the Marilyn Mason version of Beautiful People... Japan is a weird place). The last place I visited on the mainland was Kyoto, another former capitol, and the site of a ridiculous number of temples. My ex and I rented kimonos while we were there, and I would like to go on record to say that I hate kimonos now and will never wear one again if I can help it. I had to take tiny steps the entire day, and the weather was fairly cold(we went in November). We visited a few different temples there, most memorably Tou-ji and Kiyomizu-dera(which has an amazing view) and then had dinner and some drinks with one of my ex's coworkers -who just happened to be visiting the city on the same day- at a British-style pub called the Pig & Whistle. Overall, I enjoy living in Okinawa, though I might try to transfer to one of the mainland bases in the future. I would like to visit Tokyo at some point.

  14. My guess would be that it's because older members, who perhaps had already posted in the topic all those months(years?) ago might post again on it after it gets necro'd and that'd look weird, or the topic might have died simply because there was nothing left to discuss, and then someone who only read the first and last pages makes a point that was made a million times in the middle pages. Plus even if that doesn't happen, knowledge and opinions can change drastically over time, so it might be better to just start fresh. That said, any forum that forbids necros and forbids repeat threads is just stupid - it's either one or the other, or neither, like it is here.

  15. So here's the scene. It's only half-way edited. I haven't finished editing the scene because it needs to be rewritten for the novella and therefore motivation to edit and polish is low. Still not happy with my prose. Especially my second paragraph. And the third. And the rest of it. Try not to expect too much. Charm completely over-hyped it. It's not that good. That's actually worth repeating. DON'T expect too much, it's just a gag scene and Charm COMPLETELY over-hyped the thing. It's a story vaguely related to ear hygiene, which were the exact words Charm used when I accepted the topic. So it is very vaguely related to ear hygiene. Oh, and the scene was only half-way done.

  16. If you could pay people to translate without the company getting there panties in a bunch this wouldn't be a problem anymore there would be like 200 kickstarters for hiring translation teams.

  18. I'd just like to point out that sound bytes carefully picked to demonstrate a point neither confirm nor refute the point in question. Especially when the source material in question is a single word or otherwise not a complete sentence. I could pick out some phrases from my FF14 chat log that would have you scratching your head too if I asked you to "translate" them.

  19. If you live in Texas below Waco, you either believe in global warming or you spend too much time watching Fox News. To be blunt, if we want to talk about lies or misdirection in media, those who speak against the reality of climate change are those the most detached from reality. They should go speak to the Inuits in Alaska or the people living on the coasts in Southeast Asia if they want an honest opinion about the matter. When you have to face moving your entire village fifty miles inland because your ancestral home is going under water, your concern isn't how the government chose to use propaganda on the matter, it's whether your kids are going to die because a bunch of people couldn't bring themselves to support the elimination of the internal combustion engine. In other words, just because it is propaganda doesn't mean it isn't true. Propaganda is a tool, not an evil in and of itself.

  20. Wow, it took like, 20 posts before someone pointed out that there's no way in hell the japanese government could possibly insert propaganda into VNs. Why would they give a fuck about a niche medium aimed at people that will largely never hold any kind of relevance to the politics in the country and won't care much about it anyway? What you see in VNs is just the expression of the author trying to convey his convictions or making an attempt at humor. And, believe it or not, most VN writers are not good writers. I kinda lol'd when I saw that the American government was introducing propaganda into their TV series though.
