1914: The Great War [End]
satoshikyouma and 2 others reacted to Mr Poltroon for a topic
Accepted, welcome to the great Global Policeman of the world. "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland is being invaded. This shall not be tolerated. New generals shall be brought to combat the french threat. We fight to repell our French foes from our island. Troops shall be sent to repell this threat. Furthermore, the King formally announces the Holy Alliance, a coalition formed by the Great German Empire, by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, by the Swedish Empire and by the Ottoman Empire to make a better Europe for everyone." The French will regret this, 4 commanders? Pft, we'll show you what we're made of. I attack the French on the British island.3 points -
50 translated VNs you should read before you die
Pantsuhelm reacted to Kaguya for a topic
This list won't feature the VNs in order of "how good they are". Rating them would be way too much of a clusterfuck to me. The VNs are not in their respective order. Meaning number 1 is not the best, and so on. 1_CHAOS; HEAD 2_Cross Channel 3_G-Senjou no Maou 4_Fate/Stay Night 5_Forest This Visual Novel is the easiest visual novel translated to get a bad ending without using a walkthrough- which just adds to the fun of it. It makes a massive amount of references to common literature, which makes it even better. 6_Katahane It may seem like an ordinary moege- the atmosphere is light, the story is full of cuteness, which you can note by the character design and soundtrack. It gets really good in the middle, and you'll be dying to know what happens in the end. A game with multiple perspectives, it's definitely one of the most enjoyable Visual Novels I've ever read. 7 Majikoi 8_Little Busters! 9_Tsukihime "You shouldn't tell lies that you can't even fool yourself with" 10_Swan Song A post apocalyptic Visual Novel. 11_Symphonic Rain It may seem like your ordinary moege. Trust me, it's not. 12_Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo (and sequel) 13_Sekien no Inganock Steampunk. An atmosphere full of mysteries and references that will make your head blow up. 14_Steins; Gate A visual novel that deals extensively with time travel and it's consequences. 15_Utawarerumono 16_Fault: Milestone (1 & 2) 17_Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni 18_Kara no Shoujo 19_Umineko no Naku Koro ni 20_Planetarian 21_Ever 17 Another top 10. 22_Remember11 It lacks in the ending, but otherwise the story of this VN has enough to easily become one of my all-time favorites. 23_Zanmataisei Demonbane 24_Rewrite "Could it possibly be rewritten, this fate of hers?" Another one that enters the top 10. 25_Narcissu 26_Grisaia no Kajitsu 27_Saya no Uta Only if you enjoy dark and messed up settings. 28_Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni 29_Eien no Aselia 30_Rose Guns Days (1 & 2) There are small sections of gameplay on this one, but you can skip them by pressing the space bar, so this still qualifies. 31_Sengoku Rance I feel obliged to comment on this VN before suggesting it to anyone. It's an Alicesoft title, which speaks a lot for itself... If you don't know how it's going to be like, well.. Kind of tough to describe. Lots of sex, including comedy rape. Alicesoft tends to make the whole story a comedy until right near the end, where things actually do get serious. It's worth checking out, if you don't mind Rance's personality. 32_Phenomeno Want a short VN that can captivate you for their whole duration? Here is it. Visual novel adapted from the youth horror novel written by Hajime Ninomae and illustrated by yoshitoshi ABe. 33_Ef- A Fairy Tale of the Two 34_Dysfunctional Systems Another one great for those who want short Visual Novels. 35_Daibanchou Another Alicesoft title. While Rouga is not near Rance's level when it comes to pissing off people, alicesoft's style is something which often doesn't please people. 36_Yume Miru Kusuri The endings pack quite a punch. 37_Kikokugai- The Cyber Slayer 38_Eden 39_Hoshizora no Memoria 40_Katawa Shoujo Yep, it's somewhat overrated. Still, the fact that it is substantially easier for those who are starting to play visual novels to read should not be discarded, and overall, the story was good. 41_World End Economica 42_YU-NO 43_Shikkoku no Sharnoth Yep, there is a minigame on this one. If you download a save data you can skip the minigame, though. So it still qualifies. Another VN that enters my top 10. 44_Muv Luv Alternative The first Muv Luv didn't have enough to enter this list. You should still read it, though~ MLA is definitely awesome. 45_Dangan Ronpa 46_Comyu - Kuroi Ryuu to Yasashii Oukoku 47_Hanachirasu 48_Ayakashibito 49_I/O 50_Deardrops1 point -
Learn Japanese Together: Super Challenge 2013
Funyarinpa reacted to Tay for a topic
Japanese Super Challenge 2013 Do you want to learn Japanese? Do you want to play Visual Novels/Read Love Hina/Watch Pokemon in Japanese? Do you want to learn to do so with a bunch of friends? Then join with me and take Super Challenge 2013! (Background Music for this post - Link) QUICKSTART GUIDE * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Introduction to the Challenge There's been a lot of talk about learning Japanese on the forums. I, myself, essentially found Fuwanovel through Aaeru's landmark blog post about learning Japanese ( link). For many, learning Japanese becomes a years-long (or lifelong) quest that is full of fresh starts, re-starts, and re-re-starts. Some make it all the way to the level of reading/writing/speaking (or a combination of those three), and some never do. I'd like to propose a Fuwanovel group dedicated to learning as much Japanese as possible this year. Here's what the group will look like: Sign Up. People interested in taking the challenge will sign up - The "Founding Members" (aka, anybody interested in starting ASAP) will sign up by responding to this post. If there's enough support, we'll create our own little sub-forum with a dedicated sign-up pageStrength in Community. Members will post progress updates at least once a week (more on this below) as to how they're doing. People who are struggling can request (or, if we like the idea, be given right off the bat) a "buddy" -- somebody dedicated to the program, or who is further along in the program than they are -- to regularly check in on them and give them encouragement. We'll all be encouraging each other in the forums along the way. Once we have a sub-forum, each person will have their own "topic". Four Stages. There will be four stages in the program: 1) The Kanji Stage 2) The Kana Stage 3) The Grammar Stage 4) The Advanced Stage Fuwa-Centric. All material necessary for success will be linked to/provided as we go. While we all have different learning styles, some tools are important for everybody to use. We'll link to lots of different resources to help us out on the way. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Four Stages The Kanji Stage We will start by learning ~2200 Kanji (the Jōyō kanji, or a list of kanji the Japanese government determined to be the most used and most important in regular life). This is the biggest hurdle for learning Japanese, but once it's over, the rest is MUCH easier (for two reasons: 1) you already have good study habits, and 2) Kanji are a huge psychological barrier). The easiest way to study the Kanji is by using Dr. Hesig's Remembering the Kanji (RTK) method. This involves two resources: #1) Hesig's book ( amazon) (link) and a SRS-based memory program like Anki (program link) (RTK 6 recommended deck). I will be using the 6th Edition of his book, and recommend you do the same, as it has multiple corrections as well as new kanji. Kanji Stage Breakdown: Members are encouraged to choose a study plan: Pick a number of new kanji a day, such as 10, 25, 50, etc.Ex: 25/Day - Done in three months!Ex: 50/Day - Done in less than two months!Using Anki on your computer/phone/tablet, you will study 25 NEW kanji a day per Hesig's study method (more on this below), and review old kanji based on SRS spacing technologySeems like a big hurdle, but it's not! Once you get going it's fun and quick One important point about the Kanji stage (and, really, the other stages): you will continue to SRS the Kanji through the rest of the program (and, in fact, your life). The day you finish RTK1 you'll have tons of reviews (though you'll be used to the load/pacing). Those will start spreading out further and further, though, proving mastery. The Kana Stage For those that have already studied the Kanji, whipping out these puppies is a snap. I got both alphabets down in about 3 hours. My big advantage: I've already got great study habits from learning the Kanji (plus, I've learned great strategies for memorizing Japanese symbols). For this program, however, we're going to be a little more conservative. Kana Stage Breakdown: 1 week of studyOne day devoted to Hiragana, one to KatakanaFive days of practice (waaay more than you'll need, but just in case )Mastery will come quickly, especially when we move on to grammar studies The Grammar Stage This is where Japanese becomes very real and very fun. With our now-solid foundation of Kanji/Kana, we're now ready to move forward into learning how the language is structured. We will be using the AMAZING (and free!) grammar guide by Tae Kim. You can access the guide a number of ways: On Tae Kim's websiteVia complete PDF version, compiled from the website A hardcopy version (my choice, which I'm very happy with) (Pic 1) (Pic 2) (Pic 3)On iOS devices via iTunes. This grammar guide is AWESOME. You should plan to work through it at your own pace. I'm not to this step yet, so I'm not sure what's a reliable timeframe to suggest. The Advanced Stage There's a lot to do once you've got this amazing super-foundation. I'll post resources for advanced students, but at a glance they include: Reading VNs (for both enjoyment and vocab/practice)Watching Anime with subtitlesReading MangaPracticing vocab/grammar through "Sentences" and "Cloze Deletion" decks on Anki (more on this later)Farming sentencesAnd more! At this point you're ready to really start enjoying your Japanese skills. From what I've heard by many folks, reaching this stage generally takes 6-8 months for the power-learners, but still less than a year for those who are persistent. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Roadblocks and Why We Need a Community Research has shown that any large undertaking is likely to hit a barrier at a few different points in the process: after 3 days, after 1 week, after 2 weeks, after 3 weeks, after 4 weeks, and then ~once every three months after that. Hitting a barrier can come in different forms: discouragement, feeling overwhelmed, and -- very pertinent to our project -- getting so busy with other things a person "puts the project on hold for 'one or two days', and never returns." One fantastic solution to this problem has been demonstrated by repeated clinical trials and observation: a phenomenon called "Community Recruitment". Community Recruitment means that a person tells a friend/spouse/child/or group of people about a goal, and then asks for encouragement and follow-up. They then have to regularly report their progress. By utilizing community recruitment, success rates DOUBLED in most trials. So how are we going to use this in our program? All members are asked to write up a progress report at LEAST weekly for the Kanji stageWe ask a special report be written on day 3 about how it's going, as well as first impressionsBy doing a day 3 report, as well as weekly reports during the Kanji stage, the community can encourage each other through the toughest part of the tripPost-Kanji stage, we'll recommend monthly updates * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Signing Up For now, if you're interested in signing up, please post your desire below. Also indicate when you' like to start. Tay (me) will be starting on Monday 1/28/2013. The first comment under this topic is a "Quick Guide to Starting". Refer to that for instructions on how to start, as well as a forecast through the Kanji stage. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Tools / Resources Below is a list of recommended/alternate study tools and resources. http://kanji.koohii.com/ Anki (ankisrs.net) Remembering the Kanji, by James Heisig (Also, see this note if you can't afford the books)1 point -

Stockholm, Capital of Sweden: A messenger runs into the Swedish Command center. He quickly hands a dispatch to one of the two Supreme Commanders, before leaving the room. Supreme commander Katatsumuri reads the dispatch, his expression turning grim. SC Katatsumuri: "It seems that the Russians have finally made their move, right into Norrland. Our border guards are in full retreat. It is however fortunate that they have decided to strike at this particular time, since our forces have finished mopping up the Norwegian resistance. Furthermore, this gives us an excellent opportunity to reclaim what is rightfully ours. Finland." *He turns dramatically towards the radio at the table. Then he picks up the microphone and the receiver.* SC Katatsumuri: "This is Supreme Commander Katatsumuri, directly from command. All Forces are to engage the Russian armies in Norrland, and push them out of our lands! And when we are done, we will reclaim Finland, which we lost 100 years ago!" *Switches radio Channel* SC Katatsumuri: This is Katatsumuri. Tell Ohiowar that it's time to destroy the russians." *Katatsumuri leans back in his comfy chair, and starts listening what happens at the front* Simply put it, Sweden attacks Russia, with the intent of Reclaiming lost land, and recapturing Finland.1 point -

Play Miyako's route (either when it is translated, or by learning japanese). She plays a role in that too - and I think your opinion of her might change. Plus:1 point -

and out of nowhere. Not funny either. It had a nice build up but fell short of expectations near the end and stood there. Too bad, since she's one of my favourite girls ._. The answer is simple: Team Kazuko for life.1 point -
Ah, that's just how he starts off. He was raised by an asshole, so he became one himself - only way he could survive in the yakuza was to live life by the acquisition of material wealth. But let me tell you, he warms up pretty nicely to whichever girl he ends up with - provided you know which options to pick.1 point

Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo Rated 18+ In the near future. In a not so distant place. There exists a society where law is based upon deterrence and criminals are assigned "obligations" fitting for their crimes. Within this society, a man named Morita Kenichi aspires to the position of Special High Class Individual, one who holds authority over said criminals. For the purpose of fulfilling his ambition, Kenichi returns to the town he once called home. There he will encounter three girls bearing "obligations" and there he will encounter the past he left behind. Won't you join him in this story about how people relate to their society? In this story about how a society relates to its people. In this story about the girl amid the sunflowers growing in the country spinning like a wheel. ENDING GUIDE Sharin no Kuni doesn’t have the kind of routes you might except from a Visual Novel. Rather, after the introduction you will see the girls’ stories in the following order Sachi, Touka, Natsumi. Entering a heroine’s route doesn’t affect anything except the epilogue after the ending (and in the case of Sachi and Touka you get some extra scenes during the main story). After you’ve begun a relationship with Sachi or Touka you won’t be able to switch in later chapters. If you’re planning to do several routes it is definitely recommended to do Natsumi’s route first. ***Game Routes*** Natsumi Hinata Sachi Mitsuhiro Touka Oone Harem End Secret Heroine For a spoiler-free walktrough simply follow the walktrough for Natsumi or Harem End and instead of choosing (2) Live peacefully with Natsumi and the others, choose the other choice. For a more detailed walktrough (but with spoilers) read this: This walktrough is based on info aquired from GameFaqs.com and This Walktrough with some editing and additional info by me. Edit: Some stylistic changes made for posting in walkthrough section. -Tay1 point
