50 translated VNs you should read before you die
Pantsuhelm reacted to Kaguya for a topic
This list won't feature the VNs in order of "how good they are". Rating them would be way too much of a clusterfuck to me. The VNs are not in their respective order. Meaning number 1 is not the best, and so on. 1_CHAOS; HEAD 2_Cross Channel 3_G-Senjou no Maou 4_Fate/Stay Night 5_Forest This Visual Novel is the easiest visual novel translated to get a bad ending without using a walkthrough- which just adds to the fun of it. It makes a massive amount of references to common literature, which makes it even better. 6_Katahane It may seem like an ordinary moege- the atmosphere is light, the story is full of cuteness, which you can note by the character design and soundtrack. It gets really good in the middle, and you'll be dying to know what happens in the end. A game with multiple perspectives, it's definitely one of the most enjoyable Visual Novels I've ever read. 7 Majikoi 8_Little Busters! 9_Tsukihime "You shouldn't tell lies that you can't even fool yourself with" 10_Swan Song A post apocalyptic Visual Novel. 11_Symphonic Rain It may seem like your ordinary moege. Trust me, it's not. 12_Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo (and sequel) 13_Sekien no Inganock Steampunk. An atmosphere full of mysteries and references that will make your head blow up. 14_Steins; Gate A visual novel that deals extensively with time travel and it's consequences. 15_Utawarerumono 16_Fault: Milestone (1 & 2) 17_Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni 18_Kara no Shoujo 19_Umineko no Naku Koro ni 20_Planetarian 21_Ever 17 Another top 10. 22_Remember11 It lacks in the ending, but otherwise the story of this VN has enough to easily become one of my all-time favorites. 23_Zanmataisei Demonbane 24_Rewrite "Could it possibly be rewritten, this fate of hers?" Another one that enters the top 10. 25_Narcissu 26_Grisaia no Kajitsu 27_Saya no Uta Only if you enjoy dark and messed up settings. 28_Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni 29_Eien no Aselia 30_Rose Guns Days (1 & 2) There are small sections of gameplay on this one, but you can skip them by pressing the space bar, so this still qualifies. 31_Sengoku Rance I feel obliged to comment on this VN before suggesting it to anyone. It's an Alicesoft title, which speaks a lot for itself... If you don't know how it's going to be like, well.. Kind of tough to describe. Lots of sex, including comedy rape. Alicesoft tends to make the whole story a comedy until right near the end, where things actually do get serious. It's worth checking out, if you don't mind Rance's personality. 32_Phenomeno Want a short VN that can captivate you for their whole duration? Here is it. Visual novel adapted from the youth horror novel written by Hajime Ninomae and illustrated by yoshitoshi ABe. 33_Ef- A Fairy Tale of the Two 34_Dysfunctional Systems Another one great for those who want short Visual Novels. 35_Daibanchou Another Alicesoft title. While Rouga is not near Rance's level when it comes to pissing off people, alicesoft's style is something which often doesn't please people. 36_Yume Miru Kusuri The endings pack quite a punch. 37_Kikokugai- The Cyber Slayer 38_Eden 39_Hoshizora no Memoria 40_Katawa Shoujo Yep, it's somewhat overrated. Still, the fact that it is substantially easier for those who are starting to play visual novels to read should not be discarded, and overall, the story was good. 41_World End Economica 42_YU-NO 43_Shikkoku no Sharnoth Yep, there is a minigame on this one. If you download a save data you can skip the minigame, though. So it still qualifies. Another VN that enters my top 10. 44_Muv Luv Alternative The first Muv Luv didn't have enough to enter this list. You should still read it, though~ MLA is definitely awesome. 45_Dangan Ronpa 46_Comyu - Kuroi Ryuu to Yasashii Oukoku 47_Hanachirasu 48_Ayakashibito 49_I/O 50_Deardrops1 point -
Nisekoi Discussion (Spoilers)

Note: This thread has now become the official Nisekoi discussion thread and the rant below is super outdated so don't pay much mind to it (it was written when Nisekoi hadn't introduced Yui yet).1 point -
I believe we should set a limit to the length of the videos. Something like 10-15 mins. One thing I know from experience is that overly long reviews tend to get tedious after some time and you just lose interest in listening to the review because it's taking forever to explain every single bit. Something like this should be dynamic and not take too long while at the same time cover every essential point. Something that gets you to want to watch the review as well as play the novel, not a technical review filled with long insights on every aspect which can get tedious. The purpose of these videos is to get you to read the novel, not drive you away from it. Of course there can still be full reviews and in this case a longer timespan is required. What i'm saying is something like "Should you read <novel title>?" and in the video make a brief and concise evaluation/first impression/overlook of the novel so people can watch it if they're wondering wether or not it's worth it for them.1 point

Continuing Muramasa at a slow pace. I think I haven't read anything this cruel to the protagonist so far. And those nightmares-- I was laughing because how bizarre it was, but damn. Well, I guess it's time for some racing next. Also started Reminiscence because... because of glorious AkaGoei cameos! Well, there was only one serious one so far, but it made me so happy! The story is also interesting, I like reading VNs with broken protagonists.1 point

It takes a lot more than just a synopsis and a bunch of written scripts, or perhaps concepts to start making a game. Amateur projects tend to have issues mainly because the lead creators, who will be in charge of the whole project and it's team are often either way too ignorant, or don't have enough actual starting knowledge to begin properly. First endavours should always be very simple and unless you already worked as a professional (meaning you have some ammount of knowledge and skill regarding the field of your work - be it programming, writing, art or music/sfx), there's no chance you will ever create anything highly polished straight from the very start. Your work will be shit and that's actually how it's supposed to be - even though it won't look anywhere near like the "project of your dreams", it will be yours, it will get finished and might not even be as bad as you'd expected it to be in the beggining - people may even like it. Commited devs, who are skilled enough to pull most of the work by themselves have the highest chances of actually finishing something as amateurs/begginers. A lot of people expects that others will hapilly jump into the work with them and do that for free. In fact, it does happen, but VERY, VERY RARELY. In most cases no one will ever want to work with you seriously and even if you will find someone motivated as you, you can't expect anything exceptional out of them, because only other amateurs will be willing to give such work a spin, as they are mostly looking for experience and won't expect any payment in most cases; professionals are out of the question. In the end, everything revolves around money. If you're willing to spend it on the development (in other words, do it in a legitimate "business" way), you can even hire those professionals (as long as payment will be satisfying), but projects of low overall quality have a very weak chance to garner their attention (they have their own standards as well and often need to keep them; they won't work for amateurs in most cases). In overall, that's the same as simply buying out studios and making them work for you. Art and music remain very important factors in visual novel development. In best case, you will have an artist who's willing to work from the very beggining to the end and keep the overall artstyle consistent. Same goes for the music, although there's a bit more freedom available in it. Getting those two things perfectly is extremely difficult for begginers. Developers who tend to be artists have the highest chance of pulling it off properly; otherwise, it's hard to expect the artwork to be both of high quality and consistency with your own concepts. The best idea to start is to write a short GVD (game vision document) where you simply put a short synopsis of the game along with any major features/points the game will have; Imagine you're trying to sell your game as a product - what things does it have, that would make it special/stand out among other visual novels? Is it a deep, involving storyline? If so, is it branched? Does it have beautiful character designs/graphics? Lots of event cg's? Does the storytelling method involve the text to appear in a typical fashion, or is it somehow different? Maybe your game has some additional gameplay elements mixed in? Simulation, or strategy perhaps? It's a bit more harder in case of visual novels, since they are all about the same thing - conveying a story to the reader - but that's the best part as well, since it actually makes things a lot easier to manage. To sum up, if you're really serious about it, treat it with equal respect. Game designing isn't some sort of a child's play. If you're commited enough, you might actually get somewhere in the near future; otherwise it's best to stop wasting your time on daydreaming as it will only lead you to nowhere. It's much more complicated on the other side, but let's just say this remains a bare minimum for anyone, who wants to make visual novels: Being at least a writer with a bunch of published/finished works or scripts; it's much easier to create and plan a visual novel from scratch, when someone already has a finished manuscript, or at least a first draft of it. Being a productive artist with some sort of a project summary and finished concept art - character assets, event cg's, backgrounds, etc. bonus points for someone who's willing to take the lead, or work on the whole art department by itself (though it can become a real burden in overtime, especially when the project tends to grow much bigger than expected). Some sort of funding. It's not necesarilly needed and higly dependable on the overall scope of the project; small "dojin" projects are capable to get finished without any sort of funding. The lead creator/designer must be a reliable person with a broad range of different talents and at least minimum knowledge on game design and team management; it's not even a joke, if you want to actually finish something and do it in an "acceptable" ammount of time. It will take you years otherwise and you will have a very huge chance of failing. TL&DR: Don't even try to dream about making vn's, unless you're prepared.1 point

I just have a grudge with most male protagonists. They usually ruin the story for me with either their wimpyness or shouneness. Of course there's some good ones. Not many but there are. If the protagonist was female at least if they had flaws they could use cuteness as an excuse. Males can't use cuteness as an excuse (most times I guess). That's what I was getting at. Just like what Zaka posted once In the end. Cute is justice.1 point

If I was in control of every vn ever there would be no male protagonists. Just females. And it would be a world filled with yuri~ Another thing I notice in some nukiges is that apparently the heroine(s)'s uterus can expand about 2 or 3 times its normal size due to high amounts of semen. We can then conclude female heroines used in h-scenes are made of rubber or some form of material with elastic properties.1 point

H-scene clichés
heavenlysf reacted to Narcosis for a topic
Would be fun to see more decent h-scenes with characters passing out with joy. Another annoying issue with eroge, is the sole fact, that one of the characters is almost always either treated as a reward, or a victim, not as a real partner in sex. This plagues basically the whole visual novel storywriting and isn't limited to eroge. I've only seen a couple of visual novels where partners stand on equal terms, no matter their characteristics (specific story elements aside; it's obviously not meant to happen, when sex is a result of rape). This is also one of the reasons h-scenes in most eroge tend to be ridiculously unrealistic, dull and/or hilarious; because writers do not consider their characters and sex scenes turn more into a drag, rather than an integral part of the storyline with a meaning and character development.1 point -

What if the protagonist actually responded to the "You can't, stop!" during sex and then the girl was like "Oh...I didn't expect you to actually stop..." and then he lost interest and their relationship spiraled downward at an alarming rate.1 point -
