Hi everybody I'm dannyboo and I recently found this forum while I was looking for a good page to start my translation (career?). That's only in the future though Around one year ago my mother met someone during the time when she was translating live on seminars (eng - ger). It turned out that the other Person translating was a Woman who had lived in Japan for some years and is now an independant teacher who teaches japanese. I am really glad that I had stated my interest in japanese language and culture to my parents a few weeks before that, otherwise we would've maybe never seen this oppertunity. Right now I've been studying/learning Japanese for one year and soon I'll probably be able to pass the N5 levels (JLPT). I really hope that I can become a professional translator for japanese games (be they visual novels or other kinds) and be paid for what I love and enjoy. But as I said, I haven't quite reached the N5 level yet so I'm probably getting a bit ahead of myself but it is really something I would love to do and I'm looking forward to being part of this community even though I'm more the type to observe conversations on forums rather than contributing to them. I became interested in Anime when I was a little kid (I thank god that I was a kid during the times when they still played shounen anime on tv haha). My absolute favorites where of course Dragon Ball Z and it's predecessor Dragon Ball but I didn't quite enjoy GT. My second favorite was Shaman King and I also enjoyed watching Pokemon (but I didn't like the games lol) and Naruto was nice, too. Besides that I was totally entranced by Detective Conan and I would watch it whenever I could no matter how often I had seen that episode already Some years later I was re-introduced to Anime by a friend of mine (he showed me the first few epiosdes of Bleach) and from that point on I became more and more addicted to Anime. I'm the type that likes to rerererererererererewatch the Animes that he loves rather than watch new ones so there aren't like 500 of my favorites I could list now I still want to list some that i really enjoyed though: Hangyaku no Lelouch R1 & R2 - When I watched that one for the first time I was so emotionally screwed at the end (that was during the hard times of puberty where you're emotionally screwed to begin with) Tasogare Otome x Amnesia - That may or may not be a great piece of work depending on different people's opinions but for me it was a great experience (probably because it was the first Anime of that genre and after that I got more used to it?) Shaman King - Kid that runs around with 20kg weights on every ankle and of course defeats every guy that opposes him until he finally defeats the bad guy at the end and becomes the superhero for the next 500 years. All the while being dominated by his fiance whom he promised to marry her if he became shaman king. I enjoyed it Detective Conan - who solves every case no matter how illogical it seems and often it seems more like a who-can-come-up-with-the-craziest-way-to-kill-somebody-but-still-make-it-seem-logical contest Dragon Ball Z - I was glued to the screen for hours and hours just to see him shout AAAAAAAA for 10 more minutes. Clannad - because why. Great story and a happy ending (although I don't mind bad ending as long as they're well written. Zetsuen no Tempest - A recent one for me which leans on to Shakespeares 'The Tempest' and all those unexpected plot twists really keeps it interesting and exciting. But the most important thing for me was that I could identify with some of the characters' personal aspects and that made me enjoy it all the more Steins;Gate - Not much to say here Everyone who knows it loves it and if somebody doesn't like it I can't blame them. You may or may not philosophize why this sentence doesn't make sense! I'm drawing out my introduction but I think there's still something I haven't actually mentioned - VNs. At some point of my Anime filled life I realized that Animes don't always start as Animes (or more like, at this point I can't name one that does) because they all seem to be adapted from a light novel, manga or visual novel before they make their ways into our hearts. So at that time I thought I might try that kind of 'game' out. Now there are two obvious things I really want to state: First - How awe-inspiring the collaboration between art and storystelling can be Second - How frickin' long it takes to read through all that mind blowing story I mean, I may have spent more than 500 hours playing Visual Novels already even though I haven't played that many (I must admit though that quite a few had gameplay in them - like Kamidori - that really keeps you playing for more than just a long while). Right now I'm kind of staying on hold with Grizaya no Kajitsu on the Amane route and others I read are Fate/Stay Night and Dracu-Riot, I also started with Rewrite but right now I'm 'reading' several VNs without making any progress because there are always so many great ones that I'm already looking at a new one before finishing the last. Makes me feel lost. Well, however, I want to be a translator in the future and I hope that I can speed up that progress by doing finding some small projects here on Fuwanovel in the next few years (I don't really think that I am ready for a project yet, so I'll stay put for a few months till a year until I'm confident enough ) That's enough from me and I believe this is a long introduction, I hope those of you who read all of it don't feel like they wasted their time! Feel free to send me messages or something if you want to stay in contact with me. I'm excited to see what the future brings Btw: I'm a guy! Don't get distracted by my profile3 points

There's 3 lines translated. Don't see much hope for it. This vn looks awesome and I'm probably going to download it sometime soon. Sadly no one will probably care to start a translation project for it.1 point

As a matter of fact, this could be the right section. Downloads and Requests is more geared towards translations that already exist or whatever else- if he's trying to convince translators to start a project, this is just fine. The section description is "Talk about visual novel fan translations here" and convincing people to start one doesn't seem too far-fetched from that. There may be some dissonance on this, though. Asking for for a fan tl is totally fine. It doesn't go against our guidelines to try and convince members to start a translation, people should just be aware that fuwanovel itself is not a tl group. About posting the same thing on multiple forums, well, I just saw a bunch of people redirecting the guy to a lot of different places. They said that "this is not the right section" so he posted elsewhere- I didn't went over this in great detail, though. Just to remind you that it isn't a sin to be a newcomer, I often don't read all of the guidelines of a site I go to to ask one single thing. Also (and completely unrelated) "please" doesn't make a phrase polite. I'm fairly sure if I went to someone and said "stop being an annoying douchebag, please" they'd have the same reaction as if I said it without the "please"~1 point

Didn't notice someone asked this. Sorry I rarely check this thread. But let ME enlighten you on NicoMaki history~ NicoMaki started way back in February 2012 when in the Mogyutto PV the staff decided to have Maki give Nico chocolates for valentine's That's the origin of NicoMaki. It's at 3:41 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM1VrhbnWNY But it didn't stop there. When Love Live had its first anime adaptation. On episode 12 Nico is tightly hugged by Maki who pretty much sobs on her shoulder and it was very touching to say the least. This is one of the biggest boosts that caused NicoMaki to become so popular because of all the skinship involved and how canon it was. There's also plenty of other moments where Nico gets close to Maki in the series but that one is the most famous. And then it just started appearing in other media. In Love Live SIF Nico is holding Maki's hand on the title screen. There's also a bunch of references to "Nico and Maki being always like that" in School Idol Festival, implying they have a close relationship. In the Music S.T.A.R.T PV Nico is sleeping next side Maki at 3:07 and snuggling her at 4:46 http://vimeo.com/80348359 In the cover of the latest single Bokutachi no Kiseki Nico and Maki are also holding hands Then in season 2 Nico is often seen next side Maki and in the early episode she even hugs her in particular instead of any of the girls And the latest one was in season 2 where Nico and Maki had a very close moment where they shared a baked sweet potatoe on a camp trip. This one got the fandom by surprise and soon after the episode aired there was already plenty of fanart of the baked sweet potato scene. Another big source for the fandom is also the novels and the manga where their relationship is completely different. Quote from chapter 10 of the novels where Nico persuaded Maki to stay with u's. Note the novels and manga have a different storyline than the anime so their relationships are differently depicted as well. And Maki is obviously very close to Nico. Nico and Maki are just very close in most of the official works and that's why they're such a popular shipping and the staff knows this as well so they give fans special treats like this illustration: Translation (not by me!): That's pretty much the gist of it so far. They are just seen as cute together. Nico teases Maki and Maki goes tsundere on Nico but secretly she just wants to be close to her~ Read some doujins with them by Ooshima Tomo. I'm sure you'll come to love them as much as I do <3 Also to stay on topic with the thread:1 point -

Maybe this is because I'm just a casual lurker here on the boards, but I don't recall ever seeing huge bash threads about someone removing H-scenes from eroge. The golden exception of course would be Konosora, although that is extremely justified considering the butchering Moenovel did to the source material (and an entire route especially) in order to make it 'work'. Still waiting patiently on the fan translation to go through and fix that right up. I'll use the same argument that I used during the whole Konosora debacle for my opinion on this: Incest So we have a hypothetical France, whose populace is clamoring to get their hands on this awesome series called 'Game of Thrones' translated into their native language, so that they can enjoy it to their fullest. The editors however feel that the relationship between Jamie and Cersei is just too graphic for their audiences. So they decide to change it, write it so that it's something different. Yaaaay sensible values preserved! But at the cost of the Game of Thrones no longer being the Game of Thrones. Their relationship and the consequences of it are what sets off the entire series, which means that the editors now have to write another reason for Bran to get booted off of the tower, why Joffery is such a shithole, etc. etc. Imagine if that had happened, and one version of the book got butchered because some of the content in it was deemed 'offensive' and released to another population. Especially with how popular it is, there would be huge outrage involving it. Which is why there was a huge outrage with Konosora: one of the routes was thrown into a washing machine and turned around and around and around until the original context of the route was completely wiped out, and new, lesser version was created in its place. But most importantly, and the key point to the argument here, is that you are not the author, you are the translator. You do not decide if these two characters are going to have sex, it is the author of their story. Your only job is to convey the meaning and message of the original author to the absolute best of your abilities. Is the sex scene always romantic? Nope. Hell, I'm reading Ayakashibito and it's not all sunshine and butterflies in there, but there are some scenes that are very plot-relevant and give context to the characters, and no fan-translator with any respect for the work should ever change it and modify the author's work in order to suit their own personal taste. If the author/company releases an all-ages version though, whole different ball game. Take KiraKira for example. There's H-scenes in there, anyone who translates it who respects the author and their writing would be disgraceful to edit it out. But if the author, decides he or she wants to make an all-ages version, then happy days and good for them. Why? Because it is their story, not yours or mine. Only they should have the right to change it in such a way. If you don't like it, fine, all the power to you. No one is forcing you to read about the deep descriptive connection between mollusks and intercourse in Tsukihime. Pass it over because it's not your cup of tea. If you don't like it and try to force that viewpoint onto others, taking the work and changing it in a way to suit yourself and your own views? You have no respect for the authors or the stories they worked hard to create.1 point

It's not because I like H. I'll try to put it simply. It's because the original Eroge (h-scenes implied by the name) was intended to give a certain experience. And by censoring it (removing h-scenes) you're trying to give another experience that is not the original. And that is what's not right no matter how I look at it and I can not accept it. I'm not going around in circles, I've made my point pretty clear, I like the full experience not something fans think is the best experience. Don't decide what's best for others, the eroge had those scenes, it came out like that and like that it should stay. Wether the experience will be better with or without the h-scenes is not for the translator to decide.1 point

Translating: Is it ok to cut H scenes?
latilen reacted to TheFantasm for a topic
In my limited experiences of playing through VNs, I've come across a few with H-Scenes i'm fine with, and others that I'm not. For those, I simply use CTRL and skip through them. I don't get all up in arms about how something I didn't like was shown, I let it roll off my shoulder and move on. If you're not the one translating, you shouldn't complain too much. Whether they left something in you like, or hate, at the end of the day, you're getting it for free. You're not forced to play them in the first place, so getting upset or frustrated over it doesn't make sense to me.1 point -
Remaking is one thing. Taking the 50's movie you use as an example, and cutting out the parts you and some other people dislike and expecting an Oscar is another.1 point

I get it i'm trying to mix legal with fan translation. It's going on a stalemate here so i'll just put it like this: Fan translators can do whatever they want, they were unauthorized from the beginning, therefore they are "entitled" to change what they want since it's already illegal anyway and I can't make a counter argument for this. But I as a "consumer" also have the right to want to know how the original work was but I can't try it because I don't know the original language (I'm trying to learn though~) and I'm not the only one here, therefore it is in the best interest of those who want to try the novel that they are given the full product and with the closest translation as possible. I wouldn't feel right if I was given an adulterated translation that chops off chunks of the vn's story, even if it's h-scenes, because they're not trying to give me the full experience and I can't sit still and feel happy about it. I'll never be able to support censorship. It's not about h-content, it's about removing stuff from the original work really. Translating it already removes part of what it felt like originally. Removing whole scenes from it is just something I can't accept. And this is not just for h-scenes. Would you like horror to be censored too because you think it's too violent? Would you like cursing to be censored because you think it's inappropriate? All these things are part of certain vns and they are there for a reason, it was made like that and a translator's job, if they wish to do their best, is to try their best to deliver it and make it feel the way it was supposed to feel and I can't accept when scenes are removed from an original work. It's as simple as that. Whoever translates it and decides to leave out these scenes will have to live with criticism from it as well but as long as they don't falsely advertise it then all you can do is resign to it. It sucks but it's how the internet works. I'm not going to mix legal and illegal stuff anymore, that's just going to go in an infinite loop. This is simply about delivering a product and trying to showcase it the way it was originally intended and the way people normally would want to see it. At least I like to see the original product, I can't read the original language though so I look for fan translation which isn't already original so when you remove the scenes it just doesn't sit well and I can't accept it.1 point
-
Yes. It's exactly because the author didn't do it themselves that it's not okay to do it yourself. Because you know that's how things are supposed to work. Or would you say it's okay if, imagine, I take a book written by you, translate it into my language and remove violent scenes from it because I think they're too violent and I don't like them without your consent. Would you enjoy that? Is it really changed 100 times before reaching the stores? I'd like some sources to this statement. My point still stands though. It is not okay to censor an original work by yourself because you think it's better. It's just the basics of respect. Wether you like its content or not, it's how it was originally intended to be and no one aside from the people who produced it should have the right to censor it. I'm sorry that you feel such hatred for h-scenes, i'm not saying you have to like them, but that doesn't change the fact that censoring an original work by yourself is not right and that's the point I'm trying to make. If a translator leaves them out because they don't have the skill to translate it, that's one thing. But if a translator leaves them out because they think it's gross, that's what's not right. But then again, i'm not the one translating so whatever it's their decision, i'm just one individual on the internet.1 point

Translating: Is it ok to cut H scenes?
Lord Umber reacted to Nosebleed for a topic
You're missing the point. Someone already said this before. Those all ages versions that companies make are original. The author wrote them, they are adapted properly into all ages by the author. They're not censored versions, they're not cropped, they're written in a way so that h-scenes are not included and it makes sense when you read it. And the existence and translation of those is fine because that's an original work, it's unadulterated. You're not changing anything you're translating the entirety of the product which came out as all ages. However, trying to make an all ages version of an eroge that doesn't have one already, that's not okay because you're cropping and editing on your own, the author didn't do it, you did, you're not respecting the original product and the original author's intent by cropping their work, thinking it's okay because there's other eroge that have all ages versions. It's not. And you're removing the full experience that eroge would be. If the company didn't release an all ages version of that vn, you shouldn't go ahead and try to make one thinking it's all cool. If a translator tries to crop out h-scenes because they don't like it, they'll also have to live with the fact that their translation is not complete. It's partial and more importantly, it's censored and that's where the main problem lies and what I simply can't agree with.1 point
