Define "sexual norm". In the end, what you get is actually just a voice of majority. It's the exact same as with democracy being an opressive state of the masses against the rest. Even if we're talking about moral norms, they have nothing to do with sexuality, since everything is purely subjective and each place on this planet abides by different sets of rules. You can't convince people raised in a strict moral enviroment; the same thing that feds people with arguments to justify homophobic and xenophobic behaviour towards everything which is different to protect their blessed state of affairs. I find it funny people always take those lighthearted topics so seriously. Learn to enjoy what you get and don't forget that something you may not like, isn't necesarilly something, someone will dislike as well; Having choices is good.2 points

For Love of VNs: For Beginners
nekofuwafuwa reacted to Clephas for a topic
This is a list of good games to begin your journey into playing VNs in Japanese. Inevitably, most of these games will be moege, charage, or nakige. There is little to be done about this, as chuuni, sci-fi, and fantasy-action VNs have linguistic barriers that will be too much for someone still struggling with reading conversational Japanese. In particular, the biggest barrier for someone who is used to dealing with Japanese that is 'spoken', rather than 'written' is the existence of literary Japanese. The turns of phrase, different wording, etc. that an inexperienced reader might run into can either be seen as a learning experience or as pure confusion, depending on your level and state of mind. As such, I am only putting down games that are readable for someone who understands spoken Japanese but is weaker in literary Japanese. I will also put a 'second level' for those who are interested in challenging themselves a little but not too much. This one will be for those who are willing to see if they can handle the easier action scenes, more difficult event descriptions, and the like. First Level: Maji Suki Marginal Skip Suzunone Seven Kamikaze Explorer Tsuisou no Augment (this game is hilarious, and it is not a moege. I recommend this to people who liked the atmosphere of Yume Miru Kusuri) Akabanzu - Real na Sekai de Boku ga Kimi ni Dekiru Koto (this game has only minor scientific terms and jargon, mostly related to AI and MMO's. Since it is distinctly possible you ran into these terms just watching anime, I went ahead and put this up.) Chuning Lover (this game is just generally rofl) Ichiban Janakya Dame Desu Ka (one of the few almost-pure comedy in my personal lineup) Otomimi Infinity Sakura Iro Quartet (this and the game above are for mimikko fetishists) Ryuusei Kiseki (sci-fi moege, fairly easy. Hardest parts are when the protag begins preaching about his hobby) Shiawase Kazoku-bu Sukimazakura to Uso no Machi (surrealist fantasy moege... mildly funny, interesting in general) Toppara - Zashikiwarashi no Hanashi (use this as your crash course in youkai) 12/30/2014 edit Love Revenge Real Imouto ga Iru Ooizumi-kun no Baai 08/15/2016 Edit Sakigake Generation Minamijuujisei Renka Primal Hearts Primal Hearts 2 World Election Koko Kara Natsu no Innocence Second Level: Irotoridori no Sekai (yeah, it is being translated, but it isn't done yet) Konata yori Kanata Made (relatively low-difficulty action/event scenes, as well as being an excellent entry point into the utsuge genre) Tiny Dungeon series (relatively normal conversational and event scenes, and the actions scenes are relatively low-difficulty, if somewhat fast-paced) Draculius (similar to above in the action) Haruka ni Aogi, Uruwashi no (this game is probably one of the top three non-action/sci-fi/fantasy games I've played and it is harder than the games on the first level... but in exchange it is also a lot better, lol) Hyper→Highspeed→Genius (relatively high difficulty to first level, but it is easier than the games I'd prefer to introduce people to, lol) Koisuru Otome to Shugo no Tate - The Code Name is "Shield 9" (fanboys of fantranslations know this as one of the many dead projects) Ore no Tsure wa Hitodenashi Kaminoyu (this one and the one above are your source for non-human love in this stage, lol) Otome ga Tsumugu, Koi no Canvas (higher difficulty than first level primarily due to the art terms) Aete Mushisuru, Kimi to no Mirai Akatsuki no Goei (first one only, later ones are too hard for Second Level) Re: birth Colony Lost Azurite (this, Tiny Dungeon, and Draculius are probably the hardest games on this list) Fake Azure Arcology (direct link to the game above, and ditto) Kimi to Boku to Eden no Ringo Koiiro Soramoyou (famous for certain VN fanboys) Kimi to Boku to no Kishi no HIbi (recent release, fairly easy, good protag) Lunaris Filia (a vampire charage, for those who want some of that) Naka no Hito nado Inai!! Tokyo Hero Project Dracu-riot Sakura Tale Tojita Sekai no Tori Colony (this game is pretty hilarious, especially if you insist on seeing all of the loop ends before getting to the true end) Tsuki ni Yorisou, Otome no Sahou (similar to Koi no Canvas, in that the terms that will give you the most trouble are the technical ones - this time for sewing and clothing design) 12/30/2014 edit Zannen na Oretachi no Seishun Jijou Kimi no Tonari de Koishiteiru Sekai wo Sukuu Dake no Kantan na Shigoto Nanairo Reincarnation (borderline within this if you are familiar with the base concepts of youkai and ghosts as understood by the Japanese) Sakigake Generation Edit: This will be the last in my series of lists. I will edit them with additions occasionally, but I won't be making any new ones. Have fun yall.1 point -

A Note Before Reading: I realize this isn't a topic to take lightly, but I'm interested in hearing other people's viewpoints on the subject. Historically they're a major part of the medium, and so I feel they're worthy of some discussion. ********* I'm not a fan of H-Scenes. I love VNs too much to give them up, but when *those* scenes come up I generally click through at high speeds, looking away kind of awkwardly. (Now, I realize that there are two types of H-Scenes: ones intended to be "tasteful", and others in games which are blatantly sex-oriented. All of my comments are directed to the former, as the latter are... well... they are what they are.) Is it because I'm "afraid" of sex or sensuality? No way. I'm happily married and therefore have a healthy context to this stuff. Rather, I feel like H-scenes cheapen the VN experience. I understand that these scenes can represent a culmination of romance between two characters, but I don't understand why they have to be so graphic. I feel like these scenes are included in VNs for the same reason they're included in most AAA movies: the obligate sex-appeal to be used for advertising. That's the short version of my opinion, more or less. I'm interested in hearing what others think. Again, I realize this isn't the easiest topic to discuss, but I'm interested in sounding out.1 point

Is this discussion about perversion still going? I agree with maef, trying to justify H is really hard and most of the time it just goes around in circles, and why do you need to try to justify it anyway? You can just straight up admit you want H for the faps. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, everyone has sexual drive for different things (I'm sorry if I offend anyone that feels so strongly about hating hentai that they consider themselves asexual) and that is perfectly fine. You can say you think H adds to the plot and that you sometimes find some h-scenes romantic and whatnot, that's fine too. They are still at the end of the day h-scenes and everyone sees them differently. For those that don't like H. Skip the h-scenes, almost every single VN has a skip button. If more VNs added the "remove h-content" button, that'd be even greater. You'll still get your story in all its glory and you won't have to look at things you don't like. If you like h-scenes then enjoy the entirety of it. Is this such a hard thing to do? The industry doesn't need to change anything, they're trying to target more people, even if some/most of those people just want to fap to something, what matters is they are costumers that buy the product and that supports the creators regardless of the intentions. Is that a little lazy/cheap? Perhaps, but it's not going to change in the near future and the fact is the story is still going to be there if you want to read it, just don't look at the h aspect of it, plain and simple. I won't deny some vns do utilize h-scenes in a better way like Katawa Shoujo or Saya no Uta but you know most of them are just there for fanservice, that's a fact. All this discussion about trying to justify h-scenes and calling people who enjoy them perverts is beyond the point in my opinion. You like something that's different than what someone else likes? So what? We have the ability to think on a subjective level. You're never going to agree on the same aspects. And this whole morality thing is the same, everyone has different morals, nothing new to see here. You might strongly disagree with someone's morals but hey welcome to the 21st century.1 point

Okami, please. dont you remember the last topic that got locked? This is a site for civilized debate and discussion. Even if everyone you were calling a pervert was indeed one, its still not right to call people that. its like if you were a christian and you went to an atheist, and called him a "dammed disbeliever who's only end will be hell". yes, according to the book, thats right. but according to the simple laws of civilized conversation and debate, its called being rude. When it comes to h, not only would i say there unnecessary, i would go to the point of saying its the most thing keeping VN's as rare and as weird as they are. but i would still go with this suggestion:- but i still wouldn't go around calling people names because they believe something else1 point

As I said, I like both equally, but my attitude towards VN is that of a reader rather than a player. By which I mean, I don't consider I'm picking the "true" end according to my preferences. I'm just reading two alternatives, maybe I'll like one more than the other but it's not my decision to chose how the story ends, it's the author's one (because I don't have all the choices, it's just an illusion of choice since the two stories exist and are written). But that's just my philosophy of VNs, only one way to look at it. The fact that VNs offer you the possibility to construct your own story with bits and pieces the author threw in, according to what you as a reader want, is also interesting because it shows a very different way of approaching fiction than usual.1 point

I've sidestepped around this topic for quite a long time, though I guess I throw in my opinion as well. I can actually think of a VN where the h-scenes are absolutely pivotal to the whole work itself - though, to be fair, that whole work is a deconstruction of eroge itself, which, obviously, is a medium full of h content. Sure, the h-scenes are there for the usual reasons, but even that fact itself is used in favour of its whole concept. I'm not going to name the VN since that'd probably completely spoil it, but the people who read most of Nitro+ work should know what I'm talking about. That said, that is just a rare exception, and one that pretty much just proves the rule. The VN itself flat out admits that you are supposed to fap to that, which is why the scenes are so detailed in the first place, it's silly to deny that. Sure, I can think of some VNs where the h-scenes could be used to disturb the reader, such as Saya no Uta or Muramasa - but honestly, I think you could fap to that too if you tried (some people might even without trying ). I generally dislike h-scenes and they get worse the longer they are, but I'd be lying if I claimed I never liked any. I really don't like them when they clash with the story, but if they are worked in well enough (or, in some cases even manage to add to it), it isn't so bad. Lets not forget that VNs definitely are not the only medium with sex in it, there are plenty of other works - books, movies, games - with those themes depicted one way or the other. Can it fit to a specific kind of a story? Yes. Can it add to it? Yes, it can. But is it necessary? No, I wouldn't say so. Because h is what sells in Japan? That's my guess, anyway.1 point

Well, as i have already stated, i do prefer the ending were kouji kills saya and fuminori commits suicide. To me it is a question of morality: no matter how much you love someone, are you willing to kill innocent people for them? the story tried to justify it further by making fuminori lose his sanity. But still, even then, he still new he was killing innocent people, and living with saya meant killing more. So, for me, no matter how insane reality is, no matter how deep your love is, its still no justification for killing (and eating) the innocent. which is why i preferred it when i saw fuminory kill himself with the axe; serves him right! I FELL LIKE I'M GOING TO GET SO FLAMED FOR THIS...1 point

Well I don't know if it was mentioned before but the solution from my point of view is to do what Katawa Shoujo did The skipping H scenes option , it was so good and so useful especially since I am not a fan of H scenes All games should do that, but well tbh they aren't necessary at all as long as they don't affect the storyline , for example they affect the storyline in fate so they are necessary in fate and so one However there are perverts who want VNs with H scenes , I don't really mind and it is easy for us to avoid them , just (make sure you have checked the option of skipping read text) skip all the scenes So I don't think they need to change anything in the industry And I for one can't stand H scenes, I can't go through many of them, my mentality can't keep up, it has been that way even with porn So they don't need to change anything as I said before1 point

G-SNM is a great VN. I believe I've also given it a 9/10 on VNDB. It combines elements so perfectly, and none of the routes disappoint. Of course, it helps that NONE OF THE ROUTES ARE LOCKED (Message to Key). Not only that, when you take the choices, you get to see the full repercussions of your actions. Actually, I might have given it a 10/10, now that I think about it. I do not think this is a spoiler, so I recommend going for Tsubaki first and Haru last. It's the best order. Edit: Yeah, G-SNM has a 10/10 on my VNDB.1 point -

Please continue the VN. I assure you, Kotori's route is the worst of the five. Chihaya's route is interesting, and a bit cute, Akane's route IS disappointing, I guess. But for me, Lucia and Shizuru's routes are unmatched by any other VN. This is partly why I've given Rewrite a rating of 9/10. You absolutely must try them. I assure you, they're worth your time.1 point -

Completed Subarashiki Hibi ~Furenzoku Sonzai~ (SubaHibi or suba) a few days ago now. Got time to digest it some. (All the endings ofc) To say obvious about this. I'll put stuff that spoils the vn in the spoiler. Tbh, if you are going to read the vn in close future. I'd not read this, as I'd like you have a blank slate while reading it. It's that kind of vn. Now onto my thoughts. It's been a hell of a ride.. This vn is hard to compare to other vn's. Imo it's been one of the best vn's I've read. Even so, it's hard to vote on it because it's such a unique vn. I'll start with the things I didn't like so much with the vn. The vn has a lot of different ero scenes, that is to say the least. I always thought I'd avoid to see some of these kinds weird ero stuff. But, reading this vn. I somehow did anyway. You might wonder. Can't I just skip those ero scenes? Well. You could, but a lot of them are a big part of the story. Skipping them is removing a part the actual story. So to read this vn you kinda have to stomach them and follow the story still. Another thing I didn't like: Yup, pretty much only those two things I didn't like in the vn. Good vn yes~~ On to the stuff I liked and the story. The Vn really is about 3 major things I'd say. They are all pretty interconnected. The story, the characters and the philosophical. The philosophical stuff really pops of all the time. The characters are really really great imo. Not all characters have voices, but most of them who have are great. I mean Mamiya's voice changes just increases the epicness of the story. Due to how the vn is set up in the terms of chapters. You will also see how multiple sides of each character and what they think. This makes the characters seem and feel very dynamic. Also to try to understand what is happening. You have to consider a lot of stuff to try to get a grip on what actually is going on. Fun~ The story, which is divided into multiple chapters/perspectives. Are all mostly very interesting to read. Aside from the text of the story. The BGM is beautiful. The themes and different ending songs. Fit perfectly to the story and different characters. It really enchants the vn. The CG's and sprites are also really great. The art itself is really nice, it feels really detailed and at the same time smooth. How they used the CG's what also really nice. Usually VN have like a cg of something that is obvious that is taking place and the rest is mostly it's just of ero scenes. Most of the cg's in this game adds a new description to the scene. They usually give a picture of something that is much better shown than described in the text. Some after thoughts. At the end of the thoughts of my vn I tend to score the vn. Hard lol. All things considered. I will score this 10/10. Jolly good. Yes I loved this vn.1 point -
H-Scenes. Really necessary?
Cyrillej1 reacted to Guest for a topic
They are actually a level of freedom of expression that the West does not have. I want to quote from one of my drafts: "I know that a lot of people... and I mean a LOT of ppl in this world, can benefit from the bishoujos (or bishounen) because visual novels are not like any other form of media. They are the only thing that constructs REAL personal relationships with the player, in 1st person, on PURPOSE, and it is PREPOSTEROUS, and that is why they are so freaking AWESOME! Visual novels have the power to bring HOPE to those people who otherwise have no hope left in life... and that is an incredible amount of power encapsulated in a set of very simple ideas... they are ideas that can Change Lives! Vic ireland president of Gaijinworks says visual novels is the last frontier of untapped Japanese games. So to me there is really only one answer. To spread visual novels! These ideas are simply too good for us to be keeping to ourselves." bishoujo = pretty girl bishounen = pretty guy We don't have something like this in the West. That is why it is imperative that it must go out to the world (or i want it to) and make humanity better. I think that erotic scenes are just a part of the package of the visual novel ideas. They are a level of freedom of thought that people outside of Japan cannot discover for fear of stigmatism.1 point -
Personally, I play a lot of visual novels specifically for the H-scenes. I like quite cutesy stuff, so I'm glad that there are cute, sugary vn with sex scenes in, rather than just having the hardcore stuff to choose from. I also like to get to 'know' a character before the sex - what can I say, I guess I'm just an ol' romantic - so I also like having the sex scenes anchored in some kind of story. On the other hand, I also love a good plot, and I have had times when I've really been jolted out of it by a random H-scene that seems thrown in just for the sake of it. For example, I'm currently playing Kara no Shoujo, and am totally invested in the mysteries and how the story might turn out. The H-scenes so far have added nothing to the story, and I've just clicked through them to get back to the main point. So, I guess I do have an issue with H-scenes that are just there for the sake of it. It would be nice if works with a genuine story to tell didn't feel they had to have sex in them to sell. I actually think it's a great idea when studios such as Key do all-ages and adult versions of their games.1 point
