Visual Novel's why DO YOU play/read them

How to Play: Type down what you want the character to do or say and he might do it. NOTE: Fiddle is the new gamemaster. I have faith in his skills. The year is 1814. In the island nation of Japan, the Tokugawa shogunate ruled and peace prospered throughout the nation. You are a ronin who lives in the city of Edo. You were reading a manga book when a young man entered the pub you were in. He said: GLOSSARY: CHARACTER INFORMATION2 points

I think I just had a flash of divine inspiration. So regarding RinPana If you were to just abreviate the names and put them together, Rin and Hanayo would be RinHana, now this kind of doesn't sound that well when pronounced. But the point is, this kind of stuff (pairings) is always written in hiragana, and in this case it would be りんはな (RinHana) So how did the P come to be? Well what is Hanayo's favorite food? That's right, Rice! And what does rice look like? Small round seeds. And what does the character for Pa looks like? ぱ So why ぱ (Pa) instead of は (Ha) ? Because ぱ has a small little circle representing the rice Hanayo loves so much! Case closed.2 points

Visual Novel's why DO YOU play/read them
FoggyOrchid and one other reacted to Life for a topic
I love to read books. I enjoy playing games. However I find that Visual Novels are a little different from them. Most books are told from a third person perspective. Even if it is told in first person you don't really get to be in the persons shoes. Games I find completely different to a VN as I look for different qualities and focus on the gameplay as well as the story. VN's turn you into the protagonist. The stories themselves are just as/more emotional than books while maintaining quality at times. Along with the music it just provides a refreshing experience. However in the end however I try to explain it, the reason I read them is simply because I enjoy it.2 points -
because of the feeling "become the protagonist yourself and making girls fall for you"? Well, simply because I find them interesting, in an "unknown" way?2 points

Emulated PSP game text hooker?
Styler00Dollar reacted to vocaotome for a topic
EDIT : Ahaha, I didn't need to make this thread XDDD The talented Jiichi, the one behind the cool program Visual Novel Reader, has updated VNR to support PSP games runing on PPSSPP, and Sakimichi made a post on it as well as other tutorials on how to get the text hooker set up. I also managed to make everything work, croll down and you'll see screenshots of my findings. A couple days ago I discovered this program a user on LJ made that works as a text hooker for Daiya no Kuni no Alice ~Wonderful Wonder World~ PSP game emulated on JPCSP. They wrote their own text hook using cheat engine since ITH and AGTH don’t work for PSP games, and I confirmed that it indeed works for the mentioned game. I also tested it for a couple games of other companies, like Idea factory, and even though the text hooker program DnKnATH worked only for that specific game, the lengthy workaround using cheat engine worked for every game I tried. The steps seem simple enough, so I was wondering if any of the programming savvy people here would give the idea of making an universal emulated PSP game text hooker a shot. Such a text extraction program for PSP games would greatly help people who have difficulties playing PSP games without the help of machine translators. (I hope this is the right section to post this. Forgive me if I'm mistaken) 1st pic is of the DnKnATH [program at work, and the other 2 show how text is extracted manually using cheat engine.1 point -

We have a few threads for games, a few for anime and VN's... Lets talk about movies. What are your favourite scenes from them. This is one that I loved.1 point -
The writer for Emi's path actually didn't want to say if Emi was a virgin or not, since they thought the guys crazy for all virgins were creepy and/or offensive. Kira Kira has a p. random h-scene with a mature woman, though she's not got a route or anything. p. hot tho.1 point

Thank you very much for the recommendations and cute moe pictures, and just for being welcoming! I'm looking forward to have fun with you guys and everyone in this community. I like writing fantasy that really works on my imagination. But it also depends on my mood as well. That's why I think VN's are a really good medium and would like to develop them for the IOS and Android, because it's so immersive and a brilliant read! It has only been 2 months but I've literally been burning my cash on any DDR machine I find. It's too addictive, plus it attracts cute girls! I'll definitely be playing Grisaia no Kajitsu in the near future. Once again, thanks everyone for the warm welcoming!1 point

I used a specific method for learning grammar, if it helps. First, read through all of Tae Kim's grammar guide. You have to become adept with the basic grammar before going on to the essential grammar, and the same with learning the essential grammar before going on to both special expressions and advanced topics. You don't quite need to memorize all the specific conjugation for every verb ending and such right away, but be sure that you have a general idea at first and that you'll master them throughout your practice. Then there's the next step. When I finished Tae Kim's grammar, I had a vague knowledge of all of the concepts, but I couldn't memorize them all at once in such a manner that I could go on to practice. That's what I think the Amaterasu guide is good for. You can't use it to learn Japanese grammar from scratch, unless you're some kind of super genius who can memorize things and gain a holistic comprehension of them at first glance. It is good, however, to stuff into your memory everything you've learned from a more comprehensive guide, such as Tae Kim's. Read through it in such a manner that you can memorize most of the stuff, at least in the short term, and then you can move on to firsthand practice. For this, I recommend visual novels, since you can both hear and read what characters are saying. There was a nice list of easy-to-read visual novels that haven't been translated, but for some reason I couldn't find it. Well, just go with something by Yuzusoft. Also, use an electronic dictionary, such as KanjiTomo. As for vocabulary, it doesn't need to be on the same level of comprehension as your grammar. You need to know the basics so that you can learn the grammar, of course, but Tae Kim should have that covered. Once you're generally finished with studying grammar, you can either find a good Anki deck, or just learn by immersion in visual novels, etc. I mention this because although you're focusing on grammar, when you're reading visual novels, you might not be able to distinguish some words from others when using an electronic dictionary, which is why you need to know at least some of the words. If there's a specific grammatical concept that you've never learned or have forgotten, I recommend Imabi. If Tae Kim's guide is a step up in terms of comprehensiveness to Amaterasu, Imabi is another step up from Tae Kim's. It will explain even seemingly insignificant words in deep detail, so it's very convenient for when you can't find something specific elsewhere. Also, when you can't find a certain grammatical phrase anywhere you look, copy&paste it into the sentences section of Jisho, and you'll be able to learn it through context. If nothing comes up, you can probably divide it into smaller grammatical phrases. EDIT: Sorry, I hadn't originally intended the wall of text. -_-1 point

What I used was Tae Kim, because it really is pretty good (I used it.) http://www.imabi.net/ http://amaterasu.tindabox.net/guide/j-comi.php http://www.nihongoresources.com/language/grammar.html Unfortunately, I've ONLY used Tae Kim, so I don't exactly know how great these are, but I've skimmed some, and they seem pretty useful. There are plenty of other sites, which I can't really vouch the credit for, but assume are just as good. Oh yeah, I've forgotten to use them to be honest, but I'm sure they'd be helpful too.1 point -

I just enjoy the medium. Not necessarily the choice aspect either, as on average I prefer more linear VNs. Even if there are no sprites or voices, music and CGs are still enough to make it more interesting than a book for me. (The first part of Banshee's Last Cry was very immersive despite these limitations). Of course if there are sprites and voices all the better. I don't really project myself onto the MC either. I enjoy named, interesting MCs far more than blank slate ones. They can also have more depth in character interaction than anime for example. Especially in adaptions, anime have a habit of cutting things out. The nature of the medium also leaves it open to storytelling tricks, for lack of a better term.1 point -
I read them because I find them to be enjoyable simple as that.1 point

I'm looking forward to being able to rank up faster, it's a pain knowing there's so many songs that I can't play. There's also another update iirc. They are moving old SR and URs into a special draw separate to the main one, so that you can choose between wanting to draw new and old cards. *whistles nonchalantly*1 point

Fate/stay night - Where am I? And what do you think?(Spoilers)
babiker reacted to crunchytaco for a topic
It was hard for me too, but I just had to click click click until I was through the with the story. You really need to finish it up to see the epic ending. It's just one big revelation to the entire Fate story. It's the last route for that reason. Also there's nothing more epic when Kirie Kotomine is involved in all of it. If Fate/Stay Night comes out this Fall and decided to borrow heavily from the HF route, you'll probably thank yourself more for reading it. Personally I disliked Sakura's route the most. The darker storyline was a bit harder to bare because it was really long (the longest) and slow at the same time. Not having any attachments to Sakura didn't help either. She's not a very attractive character to me. I've hated her archetype since Hinata from Naruto. But that's just me. I also like characters few others care about . .- BUT - Shirou does develop into a more respectable person. He starts thinking like a rational adult, having neither the overabundant idealism of a child nor the cynicism of his predecessors. I didn't rip any hairs out while reading his dialogues that time around.1 point -

What is your most hated VN character?
crunchytaco reacted to Cythnar for a topic
I think that's enough. >_>1 point -
I wondered about this as well almost a year ago. I chose to learn japanese, as I wanted to read more vn's I liked. The ones translated weren't the ones I liked the most. If you mean by VNR Machine translators I'd pass on that. If you start using them and enjoy it, I won't hush hush you though. First I studied basic jp grammar. Then I hooked up my vn's with ITH+TA (text extracter and a Dic). I learnt japanese by reading vn's, took me around 2 months to get to read at average speaking speed. I found it fun from day 1. But it was frustrating as hell up to around 1 month later. Nowdays I can read major parts of easy-average vn's without Dic's. Watch anime without subs, I don't understand 100% everything though. Basically if someone who half assedly reads vn's like me can learn jp. I'd say anyone can.. Ganbatte lol. A active team uses around 1-2 years. Some use less. Most teams end up using 2-3 years or more..1 point
