Making Sense of the Changed Forums Organization
Chronopolis and 4 others reacted to Tay for a topic
Don’t Get Lost: Tay’s Simple Guide to Recent Changes Hail, citizen. Welcome back to the Fuwanovel Forums. If you haven’t logged in lately (read: in the last 12 hours), you’re probably surprised to see that the forums’ organization has changed. Fear not – this guide shall help you navigate these new waters. We’ll walk through them step-by-step and hopefully it’ll make sense. I’ll do my best not to waste your time. If you're in a hurry, at least read about changes 1, 3 and 4. Change #1 – The FuwaChat The forums’ shoutbox has gone live! Click on the “FuwaChat” tab in the left-hand toolbar to be taken to it (direct link). The shoutbox is an experiment, and it can be a little rough around the edges, but it’s pretty fun and I hope you give it a try. The rules can be found here. Change #2 – Two boards were moved The Technical FAQ board was moved up into the VN section and the video game board, which used to be a sub-board inside General Discussion, was renamed “Gaming Talk” and is now a root board on the index page (in the Other Discussion category). Change #3 – The General Discussion and Games & Chatter boards were overhauled Over the course of ~20 man-hours (but all within a ~2 hour period), a small team sorted through and reorganized the GD and G&C boards (praise and glory unto Flutterz, nohman, nosebleed, and myself). Many other mods are helping QA the work we did (there were bound to be mistakes). This QA process may continue for a little while, but most of the heavy lifting is done. All the GD and G&C posts were sorted into three new boards (GD, Lounge, Chatter), which you can read about below. Change #4 -- The Chatter board (Coliseum) has a metagame From time to time a secret organization called the “Bloody Senators” can choose to test the mettle of one or more threads in the Coliseum of Chatter. People who want the thread to survive will have to accomplish a task set by the Bloody Senators in a certain timeframe, else their beloved topic will be killed (essentially locked and stored away in the Necropolis board). The game isn’t meant to pick on threads or clean out the board, it’s meant to be fun. I encourage people to form guilds and do battle (to the death) in the chatter metagame. More info on this will be posted soon in the Arena of Death board (a sub-board of the Coliseum) Making Sense of the GD Boards There are now six boards in the “Other Discussion” category. Here’s a handy guide to tell you what kinds of posts go where. I’ve tried to give you a mental sentence for each board to help you intuitively tell where a post should go: Anime/Manga Talk = “This thread is about anime, manga and/or light novels.” General Discussion = “I want to have a legitimate conversation about X, and X doesn’t fit in any other board.” Threads in GD should have a solid topic and lead to discussion. (That is, strong in contrast to threads with a very specific weak topic, such focusing on a very specific single instance or incident, or jokes/games which result in rapid posting with little effort) The Lounge = “This thread is meant to get to know each other, or relax, or have some fun, and it’s not meant to be chatter-y.” Should have a something to talk about (can’t be a random chat thread) and games, jokes, or favorites threads should require some effort (not just rapid posting with minor effort). Contests have the option of going here (contests with prizes can get a little wiggle room in deciding where to be posted) and non-superficial groups/clubs belong here, too. Gaming Talk = “This thread is about a video game, being a gamer, the gaming industry, or something along those lines.” The Coliseum of Chatter (and its sub-boards) = “What is the first word you would say if the avatar above you appeared in your bedroom tonight at 3AM? #RonPaul2012. Toaster! Party like it’s 1999. Rice!” This board is the new home of chattery topics which used to go in G&C. Here’s a list of the sorts of topics that go into the coliseum: A huge “Thank You” for everybody’s patience as we’ve struggled to get to this point. Lots of additional upgrades are coming (a revamped leadership system, feedback periods for things like the Board Moderator program, etc.). I’d like to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Thank you for making Fuwanovel what it is. Tay PS: Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions or tell me if something isn’t clear. PPS: My original post about the GD overhaul has more details about the new boards if you’d like more information5 points -
Muv Luv DOES Run on Windows 8 - Here's How
Arkamondal and 2 others reacted to threepwood007 for a topic
Halloo So, after a number of minutes troubleshooting this and scouring the Internet, I have arrived at a semi-solid solution for the Muv Luv crashing problems faced when running the game on a Windows 8 platform. I'm posting this year at the risk of repeating the information elsewhere because I nearly tore my hair out trying to find it. The crash purportedly occurs in two places: - on Sumika's date following the food contest - on Sumika's route at the ending credits Obviously, this poses a game-breaking obstacle to unlocking Unlimited. Here are the steps I took to get the game working on multiple machines: 0. Prepare your save just before the crash. 1. Navigate to the Muv Luv Plugins folder. ex. C:\age\マブラヴ11\Plugins 2. Move the mlhookv2.rpo file (cut, no copying) to another location; say, the Desktop. 3. Return to the C:\age\マブラヴ11\ directory and rightclick on the マブラヴ11.exe application, then navigate to the Compatibility tab. 4. Set the following options: - Run in Compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 - Disable display scaling on high DPI settings - Reduced color mode, and set to 16-bit (65536 color) 5. Run the game - it will be in Japanese now. Fret not. Select the second option from the top, and load your save. 6. You might crash occasionially. This is somewhat expected. Fight on until you navigate to the scene when Takeru, Sumika, and the snot-nosed kid watch the power rangers show at the amusement park. 7. You should be able to navigate successfully past the part where the camera pans upwards to see the fighters standing on the sign. YOU MAY HAVE TO DO THE FOLLOWING: - set it to auto - CTRL-skip - simply click 8. STOP advancing the story once the power rangers appear and save the game. 9. Replace the mlhookv2.rpo back in the Plugins folder. 10. Restart the game (returned to English) and load your latest save. 11. Voila! You may proceed. It is very reasonable to say that this fix will also prevent the game from crashing as Sumika's credits roll, allowing the game to save the completion data. If anyone has problems with this or is also successful, post a reply. I'm curious to see if anyone still can't get past the scene using this ugly trick.3 points -

What Does Language Mean to You?
Mr Poltroon reacted to Zakamutt for a topic
Practically everyone that's not at geezer-level here understands English decently and can at least hold somewhat of a conversation, but my relation to it goes much deeper. I got early exposure to the language as my parents spoke it around me sometimes (they're decent, especially my dad, but certainly not at my level.) I cruised through English lessons almost effortlessly compared to my peers thanks to the level of immersion possible on the Internet combined with reading books fully in English at an early age (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was taking ages to come out in Swedish.) Not to mention playing this Settlers II demo to death... It got to the point where I was annoyed at people who couldn't speak English, the master language and lingua franca of the Internet. I suppose the only part separating me from weeaboo level was (and is?) not caring much for England or America as actual countries. These days, I very rarely think in Swedish (I actually tried to think exclusively in Swedish yesterday for a while, and it was very difficult to keep it up), and I don't speak it all that much at home either. When speaking English, I am much more confident than when I use my native language. I have a good command of Swedish as well, but when using English, I can maintain much more of a distance to my emotions. Using Swedish makes me feel extremely vulnerable. This isn't necessarily a good thing - speaking English is a crutch which helps me overcome my social phobia, but I can't really use it offline in most circles (and even then, it can be obnoxious). I've lost most of the French I learnt in school (not much, really), though I can read very basic texts due to immersion from being in France a lot during holidays. I don't actually speak it there, though, so on that point I'm terrible. Ah well, I have Japanese to learn...1 point -

Making Sense of the Changed Forums Organization
Chronopolis reacted to Tay for a topic
Well, that's kinda hard to do as G&C has been dissolved : P. We spent a lot of time looking at the kinds of discussion people were having, polling about what people did/didn't like, and investigating ways to help people get to know each other. There were fairly logical demarcations between the personal/meaningful recreation posts and the wild-and-fun chatter-y posts. A lot of users were frustrated at their mixing (as chatter-y posts often buried more nuanced posts), and parsing them out like this makes everybody happy. tldr: G&C can't supersede the lounge since it's no longer there, there's a wide variety of preferences in how to build friendships and parsing out lounge vs chatter will do more good than harm, and no content is lost this way -- in fact, much more is legitimized this way. That's probably true (we did have a lot of threads to go through). We'll 100% tweak the program as we go to make it as usable as possible. Like always -- we'll learn a lot even if it doesn't end up being the final solution.1 point -
Making Sense of the Changed Forums Organization
LiquidShu reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
There's a purpose to the re-organisation, I'm just curious as to how this works out *heh*. The Fuwachat is there because people were starting to treat the forums like chatboxes. Thus there is now a place for this sort of stuff. The lounge is a forum dedicated to getting to know each other in a friendly environment because Fuwa likes to emphasise friendships. It's been separated from G&C because G&C has a very negative stigma associated to it due to a) how it originated b ) half the stuff that gets posted in there and c) it being treated like the dumping ground of the forums . Obviously this would detract from the Lounge's purpose and thus it's been separated. G&C has been morphed into the Coliseum, which should be fun. It would be good to see some more topics going in the Lounge actually. Were things separated too strictly? I don't know.1 point -
If I were to point out a valid reason it'd be this one1 point

I recommend it out to people, just wish the crappy first half didn't exist, or at least wasn't so bad. I feel the anime takes itself a bit too seriously at times. I also thought the old lady plotline was kinda silly. Nevertheless, the way they presented the conflict was pretty impressive and slightly heart wrenching so I have to commend them on that front. I didn't expect it to be a tearjerker like Clannad: After Story for example (god, that show) but I felt sad for the characters regardless which is good considering the first half of the anime did a pretty poor job representing them in a likeable way (the way they presented Nanaka in the first few episodes was pretty bad considering she's the main heroine after all). The pacing is also pretty horrible. It felt like they just lumped in all the emotional stuff in the final four episodes and expected people to slog through all the bs that came before that to get to the 'good stuff'. I also fear Aoi-chan's voice might have permanently damaged my ear drums . Overall: It was a pretty good show but the first half felt like a bunch of filler which is a real shame considering the fact that there was more than enough emotional backstory availabl to fill the entire anime in a meaningful way, I think. PS: Sana is a dumbass. Seriously. He takes 'thickheaded' to a new level.1 point

[Ongoing] FAQs
Darklord Rooke reacted to Zakamutt for a topic
I might have messed up the format at times, and might have writted down some redundant stuff but with something this tl;dr, can you blame me after going through every post I did in tech support? Universal Could not load file: Stop seeding bluh bluh... Try re-downloading, file corruption is rare but happens. Japanese locale: 1.If the game requires Japanese system locale (many do), make sure you have that set up, and have restarted your computer after changing the setting. 1a.There is a setting that looks a lot like Japanese system locale, but isn't; make sure you did it as this guide says. 2. If you absolutely can't do this because other programs get messed up by it, try using one of the custom versions http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showthread.php/328830-How-to-run-Japanese-games-%28AppLocale%29 of applocale to run it. Note that this will still cause (sometimes subtle) errors at times. Registry read errors: Indications: - Errors that show strange meaningless text, sometimes with a few words in English. - "read error", "could not find", "could not open" and sometimes other errors. 1. If your game is installed in Program Files or somewhere under Users, try moving it up to a new folder (say, C:\game\). This might give you some other issues, check individual FAQs for that. 2. If the path to your has weird non-english characters in it (say, Polish, Russian or whatever), try moving it somewhere else as well. Same potential problems as above. Game won't go into fullscreen properly / I want to keep aspect ratio in fullscreen: 1. Check if the game doesn't just have a fullscreen setting. 2. Try holding the alt key then pressing the enter key. 3. There are certain graphic card settings that can help fix this. However they differ a lot, so if you want help / google fails you post a topic in voluntary. 3a. To find what graphic card(s) you have (which we will need to help), use this program http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/. F/SN 1. If you get a crash at a certain line, you can try to fast-forward through it by holding ctrl. Ayakashibito Requires japanese unicode locale. Registry read error(s), potentially various others: 1. Your computer must be in Japanese locale when you run the .bat file. If you set it to Japanese locale afterwards you need to run the .bat file again, possibly as administrator. 2. If you moved the game from where you put it when you ran the .bat file, either move it back or try running it as administrator (to let it overwrite previous entries). 3. If you're using a very old version Kendjin messed up and used a broken .bat file. This won't happen on a newer release. You can try replacing aya.bat with this one then running it again http://fuwanovel.moe/dl/Aya.bat. 4. If all else fails: find the registry key InstPath at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\propeller\あやかしびと in the registry editor and post what it says. Something more unusual might have happened. If you need help to do this / don't understand what the hell I just said just open a thread in voluntary tech support. Symphonic Rain Requires Japanese unicode locale. Invisible text: 1. Make sure you are running SR_qc.exe, not SR.exe. 2. You may need to install the Essai font. Double-click on the file named Essai included in the download. 3. If you moved the game from where it was when you ran the .bat file, either move it back or just run the .bat file again. Crash on certain lines: 1. Load a save up using the Japanese program (SR.exe). 1a. Click through one or a few lines. 1b. Save. 1c. Load in the English program (SR_qc.exe). 2. Fast-forward through the line by holding ctrl. Minigame: It's way too hard: 1. I think I set the default mini-game difficulty to hard. Since SR gameplay is pretty hardcore, you might want to try normal to start with. 2. If it's too hard anyway or you can't be bothered you can set it to auto-play the songs in the options menu. Timing seems off: 1. Try changing timing mode in the options menu. Wrong/weird characters on notes: 1. When playing you will see symbols that clearly aren't right on some notes. These are actually just to the left/right of the other keys used; for example, on the jkl; scale, ";" is displayed as "+". I/O Requires Japanese unicode locale. 1. Make sure you're running r2_en.exe 1. If you moved the game from where you put it when you ran the .bat file, either move it back or try running it as administrator (to let it overwrite previous entries). 2. If you're using a very old version Kendjin messed up and used a broken .bat file. This won't happen on a newer release. Sono Hanabira series: -Keeps giving errors / going out of fullscreen periodically: 1. Try running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3. Window won't stretch properly: 1. There are certain graphic card settings that can help fix this. However they differ a lot, so if you want help / google fails you post a topic in voluntary. (this is also in general fixes but is an especially persistent issue with this game, which usually runs at opriginal resolution with a black square around it) Hoshizora no Memoria Saves don't show after you close then reopen the game: 1. Try running it as adminitrator. If running as administrator, not running as administrator. 1a. You'll need to stick to one of these afterward. Progress doesn't save: Known issue, no known definitive fix. The save issue might have something to do with it. You can ask for a full save file if desperate. Autoskip keeps going after common route, skipping unread text: Yeah, you'll just have to stop it manually after [i can't remember which event]. Same error in Japanese version I think. Chaos;Head The listed save file issue also happens in ch6 as far as I know. That or 8...1 point -
