How does a person actually *enjoy* reading?
Shiki and 3 others reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
That depends really. Visuals are objective, you see things how they are, but prose arises from the prejudices and experiences of the narrator which means it's easier to see things how they see things. Which is sometimes fun. It's also why engaging prose is hard to write. A really easy example to give is Terry Pratchett, he has a way of describing things which doesn't translate to the big screen. For example: There was a knock at the door. It should not be possible for a knock to sound surreptitious, yet this knock achieved it. It had harmonics. They told the hindbrain: the person knocking will, if no one eventually answers, open the door anyway and sidle in, whereupon he will certainly nick any smokes that are lying around, read any correspondence that catches his eye, open a few drawers, take a nip out of such bottles of alcohol as are discovered, but stop short of major crime because he is not criminal in the sense of making a moral decision but in the sense that a weasel is evil - it is built into his very shape. It was a knock with a lot to say for itself. Now obviously something like this can't really be shown, and loses a lot in the translation to a movie or tv show. Obviously you can provide narration but unlike in a book time is money in a show/movie, there's only so much you're allowed, and this sort of narration takes a fair bit of time and is often deemed pointless. It can survive the transition to a hybrid medium like Visual Novels. That being said, if something is shown in an objective light through the use of visuals, then you lose the ability to see things uniquely as the author sees it. But that being said I wouldn't force yourself to read books, books are just another medium for stories to be conveyed and some people are unsatisfied with the text format. There's nothing wrong with that, there's plenty of alternatives around I still tend to believe it's about finding the "right books" though. I remember hating books throughout most of my childhood, my mother would shove books at me and so would school but I didn't enjoy them. I didn't start liking books until I stumbled on a select few authors, one was Piers Anthony whose books contain a lot of puns, another was Douglas Adams who was about satire and silliness, after that I made my way to fanfiction where I lost 2 years of my life, and then I was reading everything.4 points -

Online dating is just a different approach to the dating side of things, it's not some two headed beast, it's usually easier to get into due to a multitude of factors, although it can also have opposite effects in your social abptitude, especially if you start shutting yourself in said online relationship and don't try to progress it to a real life counterpart. I can see why your therapist would recommend it, especially if you've never had much romantic contact before, an online approach is not a bad thing to try out, as long as you know exactly what you're getting into and don't allow yourself to build a wall around you to avoid real life contact. Online personas can be a terrible thing if you let them consume you. Speaking from experience, I met a girl online some years back, we got along just fine texting and whatnot and we talked about all kinds of stuff, we didn't start dating online because we both felt like we needed to meet up in real life for that but we did ackowledge we had grown fond of each other. After some months I finally managed to find an opportunity to go visit her for the first time. I travelled all night for like 6 hours, it was pretty tiring, and when we finally met the next day for the first time I have to say I never experienced as much social awkwardness and anxiety as I did then. It is what one would call a disaster date and I have but myself to blame. I'll spare you specifics, but needless to say we never did begin dating (at least we're still good friends now and can look back and laugh at it). The point is, you really have to make sure if you're planning on developing any form of relationship skills, you can not shut yourself off behind a screen above all else, otherwise you'll go through shit like I did, opening up and going through awkward moments is part of growing up, and I think your therapist's advice is meant for you to try and open up with other people rather than shut yourself off so just keep that in mind when trying online dating.2 points

Ask a Fuwan (Advice thread)
FinalChaos and one other reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
Lots of cynicism in this thread... Dating is nothing more than the procedure of finding out if someone is compatible with you. The only difference between online dating and hooking-up-with-someone-at-the-bar dating is the amount of information you start with and the degree of lying possible. When you meet someone in the bar you have to worry whether that person is hiding a penchant for murder. When you meet someone online you have to worry whether that person is actually 10… AND hiding a penchant for murder. The only other thing that’s different is in the real world you usually meet other people while you’re both doing an activity you each enjoy. So you start out with something in common, which makes things easier. Let’s take the bar example again - you both enjoy booze, I’m sure that is something a lasting relationship can be built upon… At the end of the day I don’t see much wrong with online dating. People say it’s fairly unsuccessful, but so is dating in general. The vast majority of people who date never get together, and those that do enjoy a 50% divorce rate, so online dating in comparison may be slightly more unsuccessful, probably because you both don’t start out drunk which is a real shame, but there’s not too much different about it. And lastly, I don’t think your therapist really expects you to find your one true soul in this exercise, he probably thinks you’ll get other things out of it. Something that'll help with your social condition, and maybe he thinks online dating is a way to engage in this because you don't have to be out getting yourself plastered to start.2 points -

So yeah... Witcher 3 is pretty easily the best open world RPG ever made. It makes Skyrim look some low-effort indie game in comparison and DA:I literal burning garbage. Every time I play, I get impressed by how incredibly good it is at almost everything. The interface is a bit clunky, which is a shame. Movement can be wonky when you're trying to interact with stuff. But combat is fun, more so than any Bethesda or Bioware title. The side quests are all of very high quality with a ton of unique characters. Every quest feels different, there are no generic fetch quests, and the ones that come closest are camouflaged excellently behind some strong storytelling. I like the tracking stuff you have to often do, it feels like a better version of Batman's detective vision gameplay. And the main storyline is VERY good. I don't think there is such a story-dense open world RPG in existence. The Witcher 3 takes a top-of-its-class standard plot-heavy RPG and melds it perfectly into an open world, with all of the open world gameplay executed near perfectly. It is quite literally the best of both worlds, and I don't think we'll see anything like it until CD Projekt releases their next game. I really hope this encourages Bethesda and Bioware to step up their game. So as you can guess it's what I've been playing for the last week. I also managed to sneak in a few Hearthstone arena runs. Ain't played any VNs in a while.2 points

As our lolicon god some random noob posted in the confessions thread: So, time for a dedicated advice thread. Have something you want random strangers on the internet's opinions on? Want some useless amazing advice from a bunch of trained experts random fuwans? Well, you're in luck. Just share your questions here! I'll start: My therapist has suggested I start with online dating. However, I have very little experience with dating in general and I was wondering if it's a good idea or not. If so, how should I go about it?1 point

Signatures Hub
sirjabberwock reacted to Rose for a topic
(I can't make a proper banner right now so have a sign I made a while ago, just until I get my pc back) One of the greatest joys of using a forum is undoubtedly having a pretty signature and/or avatar to show off. Thinking that, I decided to create the Signatures Hub, a place where people can share their works, tutorials - as well as those that do not belong to them, as long as proper credits are given to the creators -, resources and tips. In addition, everyone is free to ask for a signature/avatar, I'm sure someone will take your request and make a really great one. For those who make signatures and avatars not for their use, but just because you enjoy doing so, you can drop them here for people to pick them up. This was something I did on a forum years ago, and I think it'll work well here too. People who want to learn how to make signatures can ask for opinions on their works and help with improving, also possibly taking requests once their confidence has build up enough for it. Please, keep in mind the avatar and signature rules we have on the forums. No explicit nudity (genitalia and female nipples are in this category) No pornography (this includes implied sexual acts and bodily fluids) No gore (disembowelment, dismemberment, torture, etc.) No offensive content (profanity, hate speech, offensive symbolism, etc.) No seizure inducing GIFs (or GIFs that make people's eyes bleed in general) No signatures exceeding 400 Kbs in filesize Lexicon As we have discussions about the works posted here, I found it relevant to add a lexicon for those who are interested in learning and don't know what is being said. Also, please check it before making a request as "Render" is word whose meaning is fairly unknown when it comes to signatures and alike. To make things more organized and easier, if you want to make a request, please use the following model: Request: (Signature and/or Avatar) Character: (Specify where the character is from) Render: (If you already have a chosen one) Typography: (What you want written in it, the text) Other: (Anything else you may want to say/ask) Meogii and Kurokusari have their own threads where they accept requests, so if you want something specifically from them, you can leave a comment there or send them a PM. Hello RinXD, it has been quite a while I gave up FPS games a long time ago, but I understand your point. My counter argument is this: balancing is a huge part of online gaming and having a guaranteed one-shot kill in a sniper rifle (no matter how realistic) isn't very balanced. They're usually put into games to be used in a scout-like role away from the pack where getting one shot kills isn't always fair to the other players (you also have to remember that most of the more popular FPS games are heavily focused on seizure-inducing pace unfortunately)1 point -
