  1. When you become friends with someone on Fuwanovel, your accounts become linked with an invisible "affection bar," which increases based on your interaction with them. There are also various quests you can do to increase your affection. The affection gauge starts at level 0, but once you gather enough points to max it out, you can increase your affection levels. I still have to play around to test what sorts of effects each level grants you, but this is what I have discovered so far: - When your affection with another member is at level 2, the success rate of favors increases by 60%. - When your affection with another member is at level 3, you gain a skill point, which you can allocate towards one of two skills: "Add Skype [Passive]," "Game Together [Active, 80 mana]," - When your affection with another member is at level 8, you unlock the ability to ask for sexual favors (still testing this) There is another functionality that revolves around the affection bar. If you and a group of other people all share a high affection mutually, then you can form a party and participate in what is known to be "circlejerking." However, be warned! Circlejerking has a chance to decrease your affection with members who are not a member of your party. If you are looking to try to maximize your affection levels with a certain member, then I advise you to include him or her in your circlejerk adventures.

  2. Hello guys. I had a bit of extra time on my hands so I decided to put it to good use and practiced my skills on translating another excerpt from Dies Irae. It's a direct sequel to the battle scene in my previous translation (and it's not even over yet, haha; I smell a trilogy on the horizon). Again, don't expect Shakespeare, but I tried to bring the nuance of Masada's writing across to the best of my ability (I imagine with debatable success). The scene has spoilers, obviously, but most of them are so cryptic you'll likely have no idea what's up if you haven't read the work already anyway. Underdog Anime

I would like to take this opportunity to create a thread about some amazing anime series that have fallen by the wayside and been forgotten by the sands of time. A lot of the anime I hold in very high esteem tend to be overlooked generally due to several factors such as weak opening episodes that failed to pull people in, confusing storylines that don't show their true excellence until very late, or just plain lack of anyone even knowing they exist. If you know of any series that you think are completely and utterly forgotten/overlooked but that could easily be classics that everyone can enjoy, please post about them along with reasons you think the anime deserves to be more than just an underdog! Let's get people watching new and interesting things! Figure 17 The Case For: Before Nanoha or Madoka turned magical girl tropes on their heads, Figure 17 did. Figure 17 is one of the most bizarre and amazing magical girl series ever created, and the fact that it generally passes unknown while Nanoha and Madoka are household names is really sad. Figure 17 combines amazing art, a beautiful soundtrack, memorable and realistic characters, a unique episode design (30 minutes of slice-of-life, 15 minutes of sci-fi magical girl action) with one of the most bizarre premises for a magical girl show ever. The trailer sets things up better than my explanation ever could, so just take a look at that. Tatakau Shisho: The Book of Bantorra The Case For: Book of Bantorra is generally overlooked (I imagine) because the opening story arc is very obtuse and strange. This is a story where the pieces don't fall into place until well into it, and after an action-filled first episode it slows down quite a bit. However, it is also based off of a light novel series that was completed when the anime came out. Like series that have actual, satisfying conclusions and cohesive story arcs? This should be right up your alley. The amount of effort the author went into creating an interesting, dynamic fantasy world should put them up alongside Japanese fantasy greats like Uehashi Nahoko. Yes, if you enjoy things like Seirei no Moribito/Guardian of the Spirit this should be a no-brainer for you. For how good the plot is as a whole this show is criminally under-rated. Zettai Karen Children The Case For: I think most people drop this show upon watching the first episode which involves a guy with the 'psychic' ability to turn things into metal by shooting a beam from his crotch. It's... definitely not the best way to start a series of this kind. The manga has a much smoother entry (though it is also riddled with problems, including the fact that the whole manga gets rebooted after only a volume or so). But here's the thing, Zettai Karen Children is good. Really, really good. What does it have going for it? Well you may as well call this the Japanese answer to X-Men. It deals with the same kind of themes; you've got super-powered humans popping up here and there and the ordinary people of the world don't like that. So you've got the faction of the good power users trying to use their powers to help people and defeat the prejudice against them, then you've got the 'evil' power users who are really just people who have suffered at the hands of the prejudiced humans and now want a place of their own in society, and then you've got the ordinary people, some of whom soften up to the power users and some of whom hate the power users with a passion. Throw into this mix a complicated 'surrogate family' story with a main character who has his own emotional scars trying to break three young girls who have constantly been abused by the system and society out of their shells and help them to see the good in their fellow humans. What else does it have going for it? Try 52 episodes without a single filler or recap episode. Not one. Every single episode in the 52 episode series builds upon the central plot, making the series feel very complete and cohesive. And the characters are amazing. I think anyone who spends any amount of time with this series will immediately want to also go watch the spinoff which is told from the 'villain's perspective (The Unlimited Hyobu Kyosuke). Dennou Coil The Case For: Dennou Coil is weird. It combines a twisted, mysterious cyberspace plot that would put most cyberpunk novelists to shame with cartoony graphics and filler episodes that would be more at home in a Nickelodeon show. It starts off at a very slow boil, and even when things pick up the bizarrely idiotic filler episodes often throw cold water on any intensity the series has gathered. But still, this is a story worth sticking around for. There's not much else I can say about it without spoiling bits of the story, so I can only heartily recommend that you check it out if you have any interest whatsoever in mysteries or stories involving virtual reality/cyberspace. Kemono no Souja Erin The Case For: It's written by the same person who wrote Seirei no Moribito/Guardian of the Spirit. For some reason they decided to stretch the story out longer than it needed to be, insert Jar Jar Binks level useless gag characters and dumb filler eps, and give it an animation style that looks more like a PBS educational cartoon and yet... no matter how much stuff you pile on top of it, this is still a fantasy story written by one of the most famous and popular fantasy authors of Japan, and it shows. This is a highly fulfilling and satisfying fantasy epic that any fantasy fan should watch RIGHT NOW. Unless you haven't seen Seirei no Moribito yet in which case watch that and then watch this RIGHT AFTER. There are several more shows I want to highlight, but I don't want to drown people in random shows right from the first post. If you'd like to post some underdog shows please do, though try to keep your reasoning behind posting it short and succinct so people can browse through the titles easily enough. Also please try to include a video, either an OP or maybe a trailer/preview that will help show off the show in some way.

    VNs: A Veteran's Opinion

I'm not going to argue about what defines a VN here. To be blunt, the fights over that issue - which were fairly pointless - were bad enough in the forums. That said, I am going to explain why VN terms tend to be so fuzzy and hard/impossible to pin down. 1. We are basically defining a medium that is new to us (new being a relative term, lol). 2. Pseudo-Japanisms like charage, moege, nakige, etc. are generalized terms that represent a certain type of structure and purpose to individual VNs. For people who like to nitpick, these terms really aren't fitting, because they are basically umbrella terms that contain a lot more than you'd think. 3. The Japanese otaku-media tendency to turn everything into an archetype creates an illusion of a 'universal unity of ideas'. Of course, there are a lot of different reasons besides these, but these are some of the more obvious ones. However, perhaps the one that bothers people the most are the pseudo-Japanisms that I and some others use and have been helpfully defined (inasmuch as that is possible) by various people. I should first explain what a pseudo-Japanism is. First, as a prime example, a visual novel is a term that came from the Japanese originally, but it is one we took and redefined for our own purposes. While the term originated in Japan, it is rarely used over there and the fundamental meaning is slightly different to them than it is to us. This is similar to the pseudo-anglicanisms like 'マンション’ that litter the Japanese language. Similarly, while the term 'moege' was coined in Japan, the actual meaning of the word changed immensely just in the past few years, as it was absorbed and reshaped by the perceptions of the Western community. Anyone who has played a 'straight moege' like Shuffle or Da Capo will understand what they are, but once you start expanding into the various other types that expanded from moege to birth new child genres, people start getting confused. To be blunt, we've gone and created a new specialist genre that pretends to be from Japan but is really almost wholly our own, because the meanings are not, strictly speaking, matching to those in Japan anymore. Of course, in a narrow sense of the word, some are the same - such as nakige and utsuge - but in the broad sense of the word, the concept of the 'charage' is almost entirely one we created to define a type of VN that branched out and away from the VNs we define as moege. In other words, the big mistake a lot of new and old people in the community make is in thinking these terms mean the same to the community in Japan as they do to the people here. These terms are ultimately ours, as they have been irreversibly shaped by our perceptions of their meaning in the way they are used. For the sake of those who don't have as much experience as I do, I'll explain the Japanese tendency toward archetyping everything. First, you have to understand that Asian culture in general sees imitation as a compliment, rather than a failing or an insult. Second, Japanese thinking is hyper-conservative, despite the rich sub-cultures that have bored holes into the base of their society. This extends to otaku culture as well and is encouraged by the commercialization of new mediums and genres as they become popular. In Japan, it wouldn't be wrong to say people 'like what they recognize'. It is this that leads to archetypical characters, settings, and stories being so dominant in VNs, anime, and manga. Of course, we see the same thing over here... but it is a much slower process. In just two or three years, we can see what was new becoming an archetype in otaku media. Over here, it tends to take ten to twenty years. It is simply a function of how our cultures work. Americans tend to dislike obviously repeating themes, and as a result we have a lot of encouragement for 'creativity' and it is harder for something to become an archetype in the first place, because we move on so fast. The Japanese find something they like, then they repeat it over and over until it becomes a tradition. Modern technology has just exacerbated this tendency, when it comes to otaku culture, lol. Edit: I should also note that the natural tendency of the Japanese is to polish things until they shine, a tendency that is reflected in their high-quality domestic products. To an extent, we can see that with VNs, as companies tend to prefer to produce a solid product that is similar if not identical to all its previous products. Unfortunately, the limitations created by that are unsuited to entertainment in general, which is the big reason why great artists and writers will all of the sudden suffer from a deep drop in quality (usually because companies want them to reproduce exactly the same VN as before, lol).

    [PSA] Change in default theme

As you may have noticed, the default theme of the forums have been changed from the old Gravity Green to the new FuwaFabulous. If you want to revert to the old one, go to the bottom left of the page, select "Change Theme" and pick Gravity Green. Notice that there are several other themes you can try. The FuwaFabulous theme can be customized. On the top right of the page, you can change the color and a few other details by clicking on "Edit style". Please note that the default theme and the availability of some of the other themes (such as Clarity) are subject to changes in the upcoming weeks. Or whenever Tay feels like it. Any complaints regarding this change is to be sent at [email protected].

  9. You're looking for a resolution, which is why you find them pointless. With a hundred points of view raging you'll rarely get a compromise, but feedback tends to be useful for generating ideas, to get an idea of the perspective of other members of the community, to keep abreast of potential problems. Whether that feedback is listened to is another question entirely, but a feedback forum serves a purpose. Speaking of which, Bats isn't complaining that there's feedback going on in the feedback forum is he? XD

  11. Without trying to offend anyone, but most of the time trying to get community feedback is a straight up waste of time. Circular arguments, pointless arguments, no will to compromise at all. Most changes I end up sitting down to implement (which is a huge pain at times) happen because I looked at the idea and thought it might lead somewhere. I frankly don't care enough to put everything through a vocal (wannabe) committee pushing some kind of agenda and am incredibly tired of the constant discussions. Most of it might be better to just get proposed instead of discussed, especially when I'm the bottleneck for most changes.

  14. Before I start this, I should probably explain the company known as AXL to the newbies. AXL, which is known for Shugotate, as well as a number of other high-quality VNs, is an 'old-hand' company that was started pretty soon after the turn of the century. They developed an extremely beautiful art style, as well as a penchant for high-quality fantasy and romance stories. The thing most people will notice upon playing any two AXL games is that the art-style is exactly the same... it still possesses somewhat thicker lines than is the norm for VNs nowadays, and the actual character faces and poses tend to be reused heavily between games. The saving grace of this is that the actual quality of the original art is so high that it still looks pretty today, so you find that you don't really mind, for the most part. Common The common route of this game is a lot closer to what you would have seen in their best games, in that it is heavy on the story and the character development. From the very beginning, you are encouraged to enjoy the protagonist breaking out of his shell and developing a relationship with the heroines, the youkai, and his new male friends. The youkai, looking like adorable stuffed toys for the most part, are mostly comedy elements, and the protagonist's relationship with the tanuki Shouji is perhaps one of the most consistently amusing aspects of it all. There is a definite serious element to the story (AXL doesn't believe in completely drama-free main stories, apparently), but that makes for much better character development during the common route. It certainly made the heroine choice about something more than who had the biggest breasts or the cutest nose! lol (this was nice after the somewhat... disappointing heroines that resided in most of the VNs I've read so far from May) Minagi I'm regretting, in some ways, choosing Minagi first. Why? Because I can't imagine a better heroine to have picked for the main/true one, haha. Minagi is the VN's 'fushigi-chan', a girl who prefers the forest to school and who avoids others' company like the plague. However, underneath her lonely mask, there lies an incredibly adorable girl that is unbelievably easy to love. Her actual route is actually one that would not have been out of place as a true one, in another VN. Right from the beginning, straight through the end, you are learning more and more about the setting, about Minagi, and about how she and the protagonist are related to it all. The drama that takes up the last part of her route is particularly fitting for a canon/true/main heroine, and I honestly think it was worth it to play this, even if just for this route. Most importantly, the ending/epilogue actually goes into detail about what happens to the heroine and protagonist afterward, concluding better than five years after the events in the main story. If I had to classify this game so far, I'd have to put it in the 'nakige' category, simply because of how deeply emotional it gets at vital moments and the fact that I spent most of the ending and epilogue crying (in a good way).

  17. Avatar: The Last Fuwabender* *Note: There will be no Avatar: The Last Airbender references from this point on.* An avatar, also known as profile picture, is defined via Google as "An icon or figure representing a particular person in computer games, Internet forums, etc." In the case of the Fuwanovel Forums, avatars typically represent one's identity, or at least represents whatever appeals to them personally at that particular point in time (such as a favorite character, "waifu", etc). Many users of this forum have different ways of utilizing their avatars and through years of extensive research I have been able to group them into the following: The Eternal: users who have had a single avatar since the beginning of their creation. ie. Zalor The Loyalist: users who have a single unique avatar that they change to variations of. Can change to another avatar, but typically returns to the original unique avatar ie. TarzanofVersailles The Bandwagoner: users who change their avatar on a whim depending on their current mood or preferences which can change over time. This can branch to Settlers who very rarely change their avatar to a new one ie. Clephas, or Travelers who change to a new avatar relatively quickly ie. Eclipsed (pre-Louise era) The Identity Crisiser: users who cycle / rotate their avatar on a frequent basis to a select few unique avatars while typically being unable to settle down on any particular one. May also become a Bandwagoner at times. ie. Kaguya-sama Eternals are the most powerful class of avatar users. Their very existence is so great, that if one were to ever somehow undergo an avatar change, the resulting shockwave can very well destroy the forums (an example being the fateful Taypocalypse of '14). Loyalists are the second most powerful class of avatars. They are typically very fond of their avatars and only choose variations of said avatar when changing avatars, or in the case that they do choose a new avatar, they tend to revert back to the original unique one eventually. Bandwagoners (subclass: Settlers/Travelers) are the common folk. Settlers are more powerful than Travelers. The Identity Crisisers are the wildcards. One can never fully determine if a Crisiser has finally settled on an avatar or if the Crisiser will continue their neverending quest for their one true avatar. ~~ TL;DR, here are all of my avatars since the beginning of my time here on Fuwanovel (times are approx.; not all images from an era are displayed.) Lurker Era (Sept) Date A Live Era (Sept - Nov) Kotori Era (Dec - Jan) <Love Live> Date A Live II Era (Jan) Charlotte Era (Feb) <Machine Doll> Frenda Era (Feb) <Toaru Majutsu no Index> Louise Era (Mar - Present) <Zero no Tsukaima> What avatar class are you? ~~ Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for more Eclipsed's ramblings!

  28. Hi there! It's been a while, I come back with my new project, a visual novel series named (weirdly named) Dragon and Weed: Origins. First of all, please note that English is not my first language, the VN scripts has been translated and we'll hire a professionnal and native proofreader, as soon as we succed our Kickstarter campaign. DWO is based on the original eponymous comics which was released in 2009 and have 77 chapters. It is a three-season series that mixes comedy, epic action and adventure: Season 1: OutBreak Season 2: The Fallen Season 3: Nemesis Faction We are currently working on the first season that is made of 5 volumes (~50 episodes). In this season, Dray and Lushian two young soldier who, having completed the extremely difficult military and spiritual program “Professional Assassins” will join an ancient secret organization. In OutBreak, events mainly take place in the organization training center where the trainee and instructors will have to face the unusual temper of our two protagonists. Features: - 1080p/Full HD Max resolution - Epic Action/ Adventure story - Fully voiced - Full color traditional and animated CGs - Awesome Original Soundtrack - Bonus and Hidden scenes The series will be available first for Windows, in English and French languages. World of Dragon and Weed: We're in 2053, few years ago, the world was ruled by war, conflicts and a conglomerate that manipulated it. Right now, political entities are trying to keep a fragile peace, the United-Nations of Europe (also called United-States of Europe), the Africa's Joint-Nations Alliance (AJNA) and the Diplomatic Alliance of the Asian Pentagon (DAAP) are the most influential. Characters: Here are the main characters of Season 1's Volume 1 - Alexander 'Dragon' Drayzaai: He is a lazy guy, a pervert and womaniser who enjoys driving the people around him crazy. In addition he has that Chibi personnality that makes him more childish, although he can sometimes be serious. - Lushian 'Weed' Nicolier: Lushian is really clever and professionnal person that can be touched by hardly anything. He's that cool guy who seems to be bored by everyone and who has lost his faith in humanity. Lushian have a limited trust: he would trust his life in a very small circle of friends, Alexander being one of them. - Rose: Former member of a private police force, she's now a lieutenant of the European Army (UNECA) as excellent that she hold a captain position by ruling a whole section. She know Dragon and Weed for a while and have a very conflictual relationship with them. - Amanda Hidejirō: Amanda is a scientist who have been kidnapped by a terrorist group. She's not custom to field work. - Benjamin Denarg: Also know as Colonel Quasar, he's a hi-ranked officer in a shadowy ancestral secret organization. Oh and is as perverted as Dragon. - Mobius: He's a Commando trainee of the Organization, a little too sure of himself. - Lucifer: She's also a Commando trainee of the Organization, cold tempered, she try her best not to kill Dragon. - Theodore Gregson-Mitchell: Lieutenant-General of the UNECA, he's a former intelligence officer of a powerful private army. Cold, merciless and result focused, he's linked to an other secret organization. - Galindo-Gomez: Known for being a sadist, he's the captain of the actual most powerful private army, the Favelas Brothers PMC. Screens: Conclusion: The Season 1 is currently on Kickstarter and Greenlight so if you like the project, please support us. A short demo will be available in few weeks, meanwhile, you can watch the Volume 1's teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4y3ODSdrA4 Follow OG-ZONE on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

  31. If Rose is reading this, maybe consider including birthdays of active members on the recognition blog. That way you get more than an impersonal list for people active in the community, you get a couple of sentences on their experiences over the past year and their wishes for the new one - an end and a new beginning so to speak. It will also be a way for the Fuwanovel community to get to know each other a little better. Also if birthdays are truly special occasions, special enough to be recognised, then maybe making them fabulous for a day is appropriate. Giving them a small spotlight on the recognition blog might fit Fuwa's welcoming atmosphere . You can make it a weekly thing, making a post every Sunday or something. Have balloons, a picture of a cake (which nobody gets to eat) and other goodies. Here's an example of what you can write for each member: Tay - Tay spent much of his past year schmoozing with many localisers and developers, finally managing to establish iron-clad and nefarious ties with Big Eroge. With this nefarious mission now achieved and having spent so much time networking, he looks forward to a relaxing year ahead doing little more than cackling over a bubbling cauldron and gathering shady spell ingredients. Happy 61st birthday Tay, may you experience many more birthdays to come. And then maybe some streamers and confetti… This way you get more content for your blog, and celebrating birthdays becomes a little more meaningful on Fuwa.

    VNs: A Veteran's Opinion

No. Generally speaking, while there are 'nukige' and 'galge' over there, the difference isn't made clear, even though it exists. For one thing, you just don't get people seriously considering why the terms were coined in the first place. As a point of reference, bishoujo-ge is an umbrella term that encompasses all male-oriented or yuri-oriented VNs. Otomege covers female-oriented VNs that expanded from shoujo manga (you can tell the influence by the male character designs, lol). I'm pretty sure we coined chuunige and charage from the beginning, though I can't be sure. At the very least, I haven't encountered chuunige being used as widely as moege or nakige over there. Chuunige is probably the most recognizable (to anyone who has played one), but I honestly have only run across like three or four people who actually used it over there... and it was relatively recent (I'm thinking reverse-influence as a possibility, which would be funny). 'ge' is just a shortening of 'geemu', and it seems to get tacked onto just about any game-related term over there, as the usual kind of word-shortening slang that every country's 'young culture' tends to develop. I'm pretty sure I brought up chuuni games as a concept over here and someone else started calling them chuunige.

  39. I'll let you in on a little secret... It's generally agreed that a VN site with a concentrated Male demographic does not make for a good dating site. Especially not in such a sexualized environment (and by that I mean VN's are usually so. All dem H-Scenes, all dat fanservice, all dat PLOT (see Sakura Series for examples)- no other implications) and out in public where anybody can easily troll in. Especially the trolls and , Fuwanovel has high amounts of that. Confession: Every time I try to do something productive I quickly notice it takes effort and cease at once.
