same. Back in fifth grade, I actually was clinically dead for about 80 seconds. It was back in that year that i was diagnosed with asthma, and i had like 3 trips to the E.R, the third being the one where i died. It's probably one of my most vivid memories, where they were conducting surgery on me. I was under anesthesia, and was bound to the table, but i woke up in part of it. All i could see was a blinding white light. I couldn't hear, i couldn't speak(because they had to get through to my pulmonary system, they cut into my shoulder and somehow got my vocal chords out of the way or something like that), and i couldn't move. It was the most frightening moment in my whole life. All i could do was weep while i was trying to scream out "mom". I awoke about 3 days later. I'm pretty sure what i experienced was that "white light" that's so often mentioned that you see when you're about to die, but then again it could have been the operating tables light on me. I haven't had any real asthma attacks since then, since whenever i start getting short of breath i get paranoid, and start using a nebulizer, and try to reach a zen state of mind. But that time of my life was no fun. This was in the early 2000s, where there wasn't nearly as much information on these sorts of things, and not nearly as much care was put into it as it is now. Another vivid memory was when i started having an attack at home, and i was using a nebulizer, and my dad got angry at me for having an attack, and was yelling at me to calm down, which of fucking course was only going to make it worse. I don't think he's ever been truly angry at me ever since that day, since that was the same day i went to the e.r for a third time. My mom later told me he cried the night of my operation, while saying forgive me over and over. I felt so bad for him. I could understand his anger, he just wanted his child to live, but he had no idea what to do. Since then, we've been pretty close. I used to think of him as a monster before that, but after that i understood he only wanted the best in life for me. Still a pretty grumpy old man, but i know him well enough to know what he really wants to say, he's just stubborn and is genetically half-native american(which imo increases a normal persons stubborness to the third power. Seriously, native americans are so damn stubborn) , and from a bygone age where men were men, and they bottled themselves up.2 points -
Steam Summer Sale!

In case anyone doubted the power of Steam sales, Eden's discount has contributed $30,000 to the Supipara fundraiser. And the 60% discount still has some time left. They're probably going to reach the $100k goal by the end of the sale, and it alone will have contributed half as much in two weeks as Eden's entire first six months.2 points -

--You specify Windows; the original tweets simply say "OS." Your assumption is probably correct, but there's no way to know this for sure. While when translating e.g. fiction, such things aren't terribly important (and saying "Windows" might actually be better), for official things like this I'd stick with the more literal translation.. This is an extremely... loose reading of 勝手, where it feels like you're letting your own feelings on the subject leak over and impact the translation. A simple "bought up [...] on their own" would be both more diplomatic and accurate. More literally, it's "If this is a request from overseas for support for foreign OS's" More literally, "Should we answer the wishes of users who shouldn't have been able to buy the product, who purchased it by means that have the potential to cause another incident, and support them? Is this right? That's... Hmm." Should be "That would have to be our decision as a company" Should be "To be honest, we could leave things in a gray area, where we let the users act with good will in the shadows while we say nothing positive or negative on the subject." Should be "To be blunt, when we received the reports right after release from users we believed to be Chinese, our user support team felt they were really skirting the line with regards to the JP ONLY clause, thinking 'I hope these people are playing within the country.' They puzzled over how to handle the issue." He's just saying that he's answering his own rhetorical question. Perhaps "Well, no, there isn't." would fit. (Finally, from a technical standpoint, you're jumping back and forth between "I" and "we." Pick one!)2 points -

HEY ME MATEYS I'm very, very new to the vn scene (super akanbo), recently got introduced by my friend through grisaia. I'm fairly okay with Japanese and heck, seeing where my life is going, it would be nice if someone picked me up for some fan subbing work ( i'm volunteering ) . I come from the weeb corner of the world, so i've seen a lot of animes that have come from visual novels. And they're pretty damn good. The one question I have is, where the fk do i get the vn's from. I've been looking around, and its pretty hush-hush on the internet where this goldmine lies. Having not read the forum rules yet, I think you're also not welcome to tell me where your fansubs come from. Oh, and I'm quite a massive gamer. I do have an Xbox one ( with a small selection of games, mostly on destiny nowsadays), and I do play a lot of PC games. Most of the time it's dota. I do have some VN's on steam, and those non-H shiet is bad for my health. ADD ME IF YOU WILL. I'm based in melbourne australia, so many of you might not even play with me because of lag. She has been a member of our community for almost a year now and it pains me to see that the majority of us do not yet know what she's been up to. She enjoys singing, so much so that she has taken it upon herself to make song covers to go along with her music. I don't know about you, but I don't think I'd ever find enough courage to allow other people to listen to me sing. Be it in real life or over the Internet, such a feat requires confidence - something I'm sure Suikashoujo has in her great and pleasurable singing. Steam Summer Sale!
Stray Cat reacted to Turnip Sensei for a topic
I never felt like Valkyria Chronicles was luck based, it feels more like trial and error to me. I had to restart almost every stage at least once to not get wiped out by unpredictable events, like reinforcements coming from an unexpected direction and so on. And most of the time it's really hard to adjust to the changing situations. (I'm also really bad at this game) Valkyria Chronicles is the kind of game were you need to move slowly and carefully, and cover all of your units to avoid casualties. Or you can just use orders to buff Alicia and break the game.1 point -

For a lot of guys, sex is the most intimate thing they can get without being emotionally invested in it. Don't be mad at them, you should feel sad for them because they will never be able to have a fulfilling relationship. Just ask Taco, having lots of sex doesn't make you a better person, even though society dictates that 'a real man must conquer a ton of women' etc... Also, about college: these are just people having fun, usually. If you could sleep around without worry, experiment a little here and there with girls that don't want any kind of commitment from you, wouldn't you do it? Everyone just wants to get laid. I don't see the problem here, honestly. As long as you're not cheating on someone, it's all good, right? Confession: My greatest flaw that has kept me from entering fulfulling relationships so far was me putting women on a pedestal. Trust me, that's bad. You need to be in a relationship with someone you consider to be an equal, after all.1 point

Changing is Hard
Chronopolis reacted to arakura for a blog entry
Last week I read It's A Hard Life. Three years ago I read Katawa Shoujo. And here I sit, writing, having finished neither of them. I bring this up because it says something about me that might not be immediately obvious and I wonder if maybe this actually matters. I think I'm in dire need of some accountability and of some understanding of what I'm really doing with myself. So, the first thing to do is to take a step back and think about why I haven't finished half of my favorite stories. From the Dune series to Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou to Hakomari and more, I've struggled for years to actually finish the stories I love the most. It's kind of a weird problem, as far as I can tell. I haven't run into anyone with quite the same issue. Let's begin. Do you know that moment? That moment when something is so good that you cannot stand it being ruined; When you tell your family to be quiet or turn off your phone so that nothing distracts you from something truly amazing. That moment when you decide that crunching on some chips does the mood a disservice and seriously focus in on what may just be the best thing you've read in the last two years. Or ever. It's that moment when I tell myself that the time isn't right. The mood needs improvement and I'm a little tired so tomorrow when I'm feeling utterly perfect is when I will return to this amazing experience. It's that moment, when I become aware of everything around me, that it all goes downhill. Because the perfect moment rarely arrives. So why not, as others have offered, just screw the mood and jump into it? It just always feels wrong. It's like having trouble trust falling. I'm afraid that if I take the chance and screw the mood, take the fall, and trust in the strength of the story I have chosen that I'll end up in in pieces on the floor. It's pretty dramatic, I know, but the dangers aren't skin-deep. A professor of mine once said, "identity is about the creation of meaning." And I really believe that. I've always told myself that these stories mean something. That they matter to me because they are somehow important, even if it isn't exactly clear how. These days I tie my very identity to their impact on me as a person and my development. They hold a place in my heart that I don't think it's exactly normal for stories to hold, but I'm quite happy that they are there anyway. That's really what it comes down to. I'm afraid that if I'm distracted or something is wrong with my mentality or what-have-you that I'll no longer feel the way I did earlier. How horrible it would be if one day I pick up the third Dune book to realize that it's not actually as good as I imagined it would be. If I were to rewatch Guilty Crown and find a plot hole I would be crushed. Something more than a story will have changed. Something about me will be different. Something I don't want to be different. It's because somewhere in the world of me I put value in these stories and they sit there in their pretty glass cases in my mind. I look at them and think to myself 'how pretty that was' or 'how much you matter to me'. I am afraid that one day I will look at something once beloved and no longer will that passion burn. And then I will be left with nothing (well... not nothing). So I stop reading Dune, afraid that the third book will not live up to my image of the first two. I stop watching Ghost in the Shell because the timing isn't right. I stop and I worry and I worry. I stop because I feel fragile. I want to change. So I will. More on that to come, probably. Thanks for reading and I'd be glad if you left a comment.1 point -
So, I ended up seeing the movie yesterday with a couple of buddies of mine before we had our D&D night. Overall, I had a good time with it. The last fight scene was simultaneously the coolest and dumbest thing I've seen in combo in awhile. The private security subplot about weaponizing the raptors was the weakest part of the movie. Vincent D'onofrio's character really fell flat, he was like one giant walking cliche who had never seen or read a single piece of fiction in his life.1 point

I think dowolf has it correct, though that is one painful sentence to parse. 公式で対応してしまうと This part is pretty easy, right? "If we answer these demands officially," そういう会社としての判断にならざるを得ないし・・・・ This segment is related to the first segment above. そういう is also a reference to "answering the demands". It basically says that "answering the demands" is a "decision/judgment of the company". My interpretation then, is that combined, these two segments mean something along the lines of: "If we are to answer these demands, it would have to be a decision on the part of the company". Edit: As relating to the sentence following it, he's basically saying that the company doesn't want to make a decision on the matter. If the company were to answer the demands, then it risks getting into international trouble. If the company were to deny the demands, then it puts pressure on the users who make their own outs to the matter. He would much rather have the company neither answer nor deny the demands, leaving the matter ambiguous and letting the users do what they will in the dark. Edit2: I feel like I keep stating the obvious. Let's just say my point is that the sentence in question says answering the demand will force the company to make a decision. He later goes on to say this (the company making a decision) isn't desirable.1 point -
If the game is only out for Windows, then that's fine. 勝 手 indeed has a negative connotation, but you're sort of overdoing it. C.f. "He did it without asking" vs. "He did it with complete disregard for the consequences." Both are negative, but the former is more like 勝手 while the latter goes too far. As for the last thing, umm... You're definitely understanding the context right--if there were no pressure, obviously it would be easy for them to support the fan-made patch--but... Heh. Now you're starting to make me doubt myself >_> Not that that's a bad thing, but it does mean I'm staring at this line far longer than I should But let's break it down: そういう会社としての判断にならざるを得ないし Let's get rid of the そういう and the double negative construction at the end to simplify things a bit without massively changing the meaning: 会社としての判断になる I think this simplified version is pretty easy to parse: "[it would] become our judgement as a company." Now, let's start adding things back in: 会社としての判断にならざるを得ない That double negative there is an idiomatic expression (as you can probably tell with the unusual -zaru negation [c.f. ならず]) meaning "have no choice but to." So, adding that on to our previous translation, we would get "It would have to be our judgement as a company." Now, on to そういう. You interpreted it as pointing at 会社, which would give you "It would have to be our judgement as that sort of company," which sounds kind of weird. I interpreted it as pointing at the entire phrase 会社としての判断, giving us "It would have to be that sort of judgment as a company." (I then stripped the "that sort" out of my translation because I felt that made it sound best in English.) I can't really give a good reason as to why I prefer my interpretation to yours, other than that it makes more sense, but... Blech. Maybe someone else can do better (or point out how I'm being an idiot >_>). Though I will conclude by saying that, if I were to write out what you translated the sentence as in Japanese, I might go with そういう会社として認められざるを得ない.1 point

I lightly skimmed through it, and the only significant errors I noticed were in these lines: #3 line 取り上げられて in this case means "became the center of attention (言及の対象となるさま) #7 line 国内でのプレイ・・・だったらいいな・・・ というJPONLYの部分に対して (国内でのプレイ part is not a part of the Chinese guy's words, it's a part of the JPONLY thing). The latter half (というJPONLYの部分に対して、ユーザーサポートもかなりスレスレ感があったりもして) says that they are limited and don't know by how much they can or should help people regarding the JPONLY issues (probably only talking about overseas users) and it makes the work of their support guys very complicated when people come to them with those issues (basically they don't know wtf they should do and that's causing them headaches) (スレスレ感 in this sentence means that they are already probably stretching the limits of what's allowed to do). #9 I'm not sure why you added "ironically" here, I don't feel see any irony in that situation. ><1 point
