Anime Expo runs from July 2nd - 5th in Los Angeles, and all three major english VN publishers will be present and announcing new products. This is the biggest convention of the year for VNs, and contains the highest concentration of new announcements, it's pretty exciting! Here's who will be there and what to expect from them: JAST JAST's panel comes first at 10PM PDT on Thursday. Nobody is really sure what to expect from JAST, but they have claimed that they will be announcing some stuff there. The safe guess is a new Alcot game (moege dev, makers of My Girlfriend is the President and Clover Days), which is something they teased around six months ago. The more far-fetched guess is Muramasa by Nitro+. It seems like this is going to happen eventually, but JAST has also said they want to wait until projects are further along before announcing them, to avoid Hanachirasu and Sumaga incidents in the future. If you're attending, JAST's booth is #1319. And it's over! JAST announced Flowers, an all-ages yuri/mystery VN, for fall 2015 which is kind of crazy since everyone thought MangaGamer would be the ones to handle that. Also SoniComi, which was translated and edited by the power duo of Tulip Goddess Maria and Ritobito, so actually look forward to that "soon". Seinarukana will also be out Fall 2015... supposedly. The Alcot game they teased earlier in the year was a no-show, but JAST seemed to imply that they may have more to announce at Comic-con so there is still hope for the moege lovers out there. Sekai Project SP comes second, their panel is at 7PM PDT on Saturday. I know even less of what to expect from SP than JAST. I believe Key is attending AX as well. I would not be surprised by the announcement of another Key game being licensed, be it LB, Rewrite, or maybe even Angel Beats?? They planned to work with Doki on Clannad before that was dashed by the community's desire for a total retranslation, and Doki teased some Little Busters news sometime this summer, so LB may be the most likely suspect. They will also probably announce some doujin games, as is Sekai Project's habit. Interestingly, they just set up a Japanese twitter account and is tweeting about AX in it. It would be a humorous twist if they announce they'll be translating some OELVNs into Japanese. SP's booth is #1720. Panel summary: Sekai Project continues to impress with their ability to license popular titles. They've managed to grab the highly lucrative Akabei Soft partnership, and will start by releasing G-Senjou no Maou this summer. They've licensed Root Double, a popular survival story made by the director of the Infinity games. They've also announced Chrono Clock for release "soon", which establishes a new partnership with the respected eroge developer Purple Software. Additional news: There will be a remake for the entire Narcissu trilogy, including part 3 in english for the first time, World End Economica Ep. 2 is releasing this month, and Clannad is releasing in November. MangaGamer MangaGamer is last, hosting their panel at 9PM PDT on Saturday. Ryukishi07 of Higurashi and Umineko fame is attending the panel with them, likely to talk about Higurashi's western release. It may be too soon to announce another license deal with him, but who knows, it could happen. MangaGamer has teased four announcements, including three whole new partners. They have separately teased an announcement of a yuri game, and have recently conspicuously posted pictures of SonoHana merchandise at their booth (although they're known to sell goods from completely unrelated VNs). My guess: The one announcement from a current partner is going to be Tsuriotsu from Navel, but really, it could be anything. MG's booth is #919. AND THAT'S ALL SHE WROTE! The big announcement of the MangaGamer panel was their partnership with Alice Soft, starting with Beat Blades Haruka. Other announcements included Himawari, a sci-fi work known in Japan for its intricate storytelling, A Kiss For The Petals - Remember How We Met is an all-ages yuri VN coming to Steam from the popular SonoHana yuri series, and MangaGamer will be updating and releasing the Witch Hunt translation of Umineko for sale, with new character sprites. Other news was that Sweet Sweat in Summer will be out this month, Kara no Shoujo 2 will be out this fall, and they're aiming for an end of 2015 release for Gahkthun. Honorable mentions: Degica is attending and talked about their upcoming Muv-Luv kickstarter, which will go live late August or early September. Aksys Games announced that Zero Escape 3 is in the works and will be available in Summer 2016. So what are you guys excited about? What do you think is going to happen? If you're attending, feel free to talk about your experiences on the show floor, although keep in mind this thread is about visual novels. I will be updating this post as new information comes out. Your wildest dreams didn't come true? Remember, Otakon is later this month and MG and others will have more announcements there, too.6 points

Fuwanovel Confessions
Shoon-kami and 3 others reacted to Cyrillej1 for a topic
Confession: I went to the movies alone all the time, just had to get used to it since I love to watch new movies but often had no one to go with. Now, sometimes I even prefer to go alone even when I have someone I could go with xD. But yeah, it's nice to have company. I even celebrated my b-day alone today, treated myself to some yummy drink & food and bought myself some video games... lol, so sad.4 points -
I got over it when I learned that 18+ thoughts were super effective at banishing fearful thoughts. It's almost bizarre how well it works. I used to be a super scaredy-cat that had nightmares all the time, then I played my first H-game, read my first hentai manga, and realized that when I thought dirty thoughts all my fearful thoughts would scatter right away. Don't buy the religious hype; the opposite of fear is not faith, the opposite of fear is porn.3 points

The otaku Western world through starlessn1ght's perspective
Vince and one other reacted to starlessn1ght for a topic
Who am I? I think it's time to reveal my identity. Why am I here and stuff... I'm a kind of nomad. And a "newbie" also. Compared to most people, I'm not old in the otaku fandom. I've started getting into it a year and a half ago. I wasn't guided my recommendations, or anything. I just had some kind of "prejudice" towards anime and I wanted to know more about it. So I picked my first anime, that was currently airing, which was Nagi no Asukara. My purpose is to have some decent knowledge and experience in various storytelling "long" medias, since I prefer long stories and find them easier to immerse myself and be attached to them. Back then, I had no knowledge about Eastern storytelling media, so my perspective was all "Western". This is why I had some difficulties adapting to the otaku world. Adapting to the new world As far as I know, "forums" are mostly something related to the otaku fanbase, so Western stories forums aren't really "outstanding". So my contact to the Western community was through social networks, specially tumblr, and also through RL people. The Western approach to fiction was mostly "fangirling" and "fanboying", rather than "critical". So I didn't really pay attention to the stories' flaws and what could be improved, but what was 'cool' and what characters I liked and such. Then, when I joined the otaku world, I still viewed anime through that perspective. But one thing I like to do is 'searching'. I am not someone who watches tons of anime, and marathoning them to 'get into' anime more. My anime list is humble, it has only seven animes, not counting sequels, side stories, and etc. But I can tell the name of a lot of animes and what they are about, even the whole story sometimes. I don't go discussing those because I didn't watch them. This just serves to expand my knowledge of his this world works. My first contact to VNs was through a shoujo dating sim name "Amour Sucre" some girls played in my school. I found the concept interesting and I wondered if there was something like that with girls. I ignored it. But then I was searching a trope in TV tropes and I found a work called "If My Heart Had Wings", it was a 'visual novel'. I kind of liked how it looked and then I downloaded it. Then I started ctrling everything making some choices to see how was it like. I found it damn long but I couldn't be more curious about the media. I started searching for more and more VNs, until I found Fuwanovel. I searched for a VN for me to really play and I found Rewrite. Downloaded the torrent (when it existed) and started playing it. I didn't understand what was a route until I played Lucia's route (my first). And damn, my first route was incredible! The best route I've played yet! After Rewrite, I played IMHHW (for real) and LB! Back to the main topic: I took interest in "reviews" and I like how they were made after I joined the otaku world. I thought critique was just for critics before, but I find them specially "crucial", because they can tell what the fans want, what they liked and what they disliked about certain work. It's also good to explain why you liked something and discuss with others about it. My tastes for anime/manga/LN/VN I look for different things in those different medias. But there are some stuff I always dislike. In anime, I look mostly for good characters that I can attach myself too and also good soundtrack. The story has to have moments with big emotional impact on me. Notable examples: Sword Art Online and Non Non Biyori. In manga, I look mostly for a good story, something engaging that the more I read the more I want to read. Notable examples: Iris Zero and Masamune-kun no Revenge. In LN, good character dynamics so the story won't be boring in the beginning, that is generally lighter. And also a good protagonist, which I can relate to. Notable examples: Oregairu and Eromanga Sensei. In VN, "impactful stories". Yeah, I've seen the potential VNs have as a medium and I expect remarkable moments as well as an engaging story that isn't boring to read. Notable examples: Rewrite and Little Busters! As many of you must know, I dislike comedy. I do think it's a waste of time, and even if it makes me laugh I still think it's boring. I'm much more into drama. To be fair, the way anime does drama was something new to me and I liked it. Actually, I prefer the drama done in the anime-way than in the Western-way. I also dislike ecchi, it's also a waste of time imo. Back in my first anime stages, I thought harem was super cool, looking at the concept. It looked like a love triangle, except bigger. But after time passed and I read other people's opinions, I don't really like it anymore... I like moe, though Fuwanovel When I started participating on Fuwa forums, I was rather surprised. First, because of the Coliseum of Chatter. It was full of silly things, and you could post silly pics and say silly stuff. I found it strange, but eventually came to like it. Also, because of the way people treat ecchi, moe and even hentai here. I thought Westerners almost always looked down on those things. I also thought almost no one was interested in nukiges, and almost everyone skipped H-scenes, and almost everyone disliked lolis. But I was wrong. Fuwa showed me that. Not saying I agree with most fuwans, but at least here I can share my love for moe and cute girls. The end This is it. I just hope you know me a bit better after reading this. Here's a pic of Lucia:2 points -
Finished playing this today. All I can say is, every single second of it was worth it.2 points

Not that it will mean anything. Traditionally, the fan translation scene produced very few moege translations. The large amount of moege translations are a relatively new phenomenon, mostly started by us. It's not too surprising that the localization companies would fall behind on that trend, since they're by and large made up of all the people from the fan scene who were previously not doing moege at all. edit: Didn't mean to double post, sorry.2 points

The Worst "Game" Ever Made
Shikomizue and one other reacted to suikashoujo for a topic
This is the kind of thing that's so mind-numbingly stupid and ridiculous, that it bypasses the label of "dumb" and ends up being nothing less that a masterpiece, truly the best that humanity has to offer in the field of art. Whoever said that videogames can't be art has been proven wrong, thanks to the talent behind Dalmatians 3. After watching all 42 minutes and 46 seconds, I can truly say that my life has been forever changed thanks to this animation.2 points -

Zalor reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
It IS a good adaption. Some people even recommend watching the anime instead of reading that bloated behemoth named Clannad1 point -
Well, Steins;Gate is considered one of the best visual novel anime adaptations out there so you might want to give the original a go because it's much more superior. Higurashi is also a good choice.1 point

Gaki Tsukai Batsu Game
Getsuya reacted to AnimalSoundss for a topic
Anyone else watch this show? People upload the videos to youtube with eng sub, and it's freaking fantastic. Been watching them for years. I'm currently a bit behind and watching the prison one now, laughing my ass off, so Kinda wondered if anyone else knows of this show...... Here's a link to one of their much earlier shows, in case youre interested (its not full screen for legal reasons, but you can find it full screen with a bit of searching) https://youtu.be/gsL3Nqppi4Y A little info. Theses guys are a group of comedians mostly, famous people in Japan. A Batsu game is a punishment game. In this one, if they laugh at any time they are punished, usually by someone running in and smacking the crap out of there behinds. They also do other methods, such as shooting darts into their butts also....painfull stuff. So of course, the whole show is set up to try to make them laugh. Some of their jokes and such might go over peoples heads if they dont know japanese culture too well, but even if you dont it is strange and outlandish enough to enjoy without knowing. Enjoy!! Oh, and DONT start with the newer, 2015 ones. Some of the games and such are references to older batsu games. You'll miss out1 point -

Bugs and big dogs. Also I don't have it anymore but I used to have a sort of phobia that I would wake up and something would be standing by my bed. It could have been anything, just the thought of waking up to some animal or something standing by my bed watching me or something. It was a really serious fear of mine so I spent quite a few years of my life sleeping with my face to the wall every night. I didn't care if whatever it was that appeared at my bedside killed me or whatever, as long as I didn't have to see it first.1 point

Dorm Life
Cyrillej1 reacted to rainsismyfav for a topic
It's hit-or-miss depending on who you end up with. Depending on your dorm situation, you can also switch dorms/rooms. Though most dorms have a freeze during the first few weeks. My first roommate wasn't a pleasant experience and I knew it right off of first week. Luckily for me the room next door had an opening, and the guy there seemed better and was ok with me transferring. He turned out to be really really cool. He was an extrovert but he was tolerant of a lot of things, despite being the stereotypical party-all-the-time guy. He didn't judge me from living the introvert lifestyle that I had lived and it was really fun hanging around him and his friends once in awhile. They also spiced up my college experience like the time they'd bring girls to our dormroom1 point -

Fuwanovel Confessions

Confession: I'm very happy today. I called the vital records in my county and they gave me a lot of information that the attorneys wouldn't/couldn't reveal. It looks like I won't have to break my bank nor stress out about this situation so much anymore!1 point -

Hmm, I almost wish I could have that problem instead since mine is the opposite^^; I very much prefer 1-on-1, since in a group setting I tend to disappear into the background because I can get quiet from nervousness depending on how big the group is, and who I know/don't know. I can be shy and very self-conscious, so if there's only 1 person to focus on, it's not as bad compared to many people I have to worry about.. and it can paralyze me or I get panic attacks >_<; This is why I dislike presentations in front of crowds.... my legs/hands/voice can shake against my will. I have to try and calm myself down or fight back the paranoid thoughts. On the outside, I may appear calm if my feelings haven't leaked out yet, but inside my mind is like AHHH%@*#& get me out of here. I think that fear of mine influences me a bit on the forum even, but to a lesser extent probably because of the feeling of anonymity.1 point

Tsukihime Remake? Is it going to happen?
Suzu Fanatic reacted to Clephas for a topic
Well, setting my previous jokes aside, I definitely hope they plan to release it within a year or so. I'd be satisfied with a simple music and visuals update, with some added scenes. The problem is, Kinoko Nasu is: 1) Easily Distracted (the incredible number of side-games that nobody really wanted) 2) Slow to work (Mahoutsukai no Yoru) 3) Hungry for Money (milks Type-Moon's IPs to death with as little work as is humanly possible) Edit: Don't worry. With Sumaga you aren't missing out. It was the beginning of the end for the main company's decent games.1 point -

Yumiko Sakaki route praise thread?
starlessn1ght reacted to DawnWolf for a topic
If you enjoyed Yumiko's route, odds are you'll love Makina's, don't skip it. Because let's be real here, I liked Yumiko more than Makina as a character, but even I'll admit Yumiko's route is literally just a watered down version of Makina's. There are two things Yumiko's route does better; the ending (Makina's bad ending will make you cringe...), and the H scenes (although Makina's are fucking hilarious). Everything else was done better in Makina's route. I really liked Yumiko, and most kuuderes in general. And the family photo near the end was super heart warming.1 point -
H-scene clichés

They also have multiple orgasms in a short span of time which is physically impossible due to the human body's phisiology. The creatures in eroge which we often refer to as male protagonists have a portal to a different dimension in their genitals that allows for unlimited storage of fluids. They also deny negative feedback in their brains which allows for multiple orgasms. They are not human.1 point -
You think I like Total Eclipse only because it's MuvLuv then? That is some shallow thinking. And your statements of protagonist, Yuuya, is in no way objective ether. So please, it's ok if you don't like it but don't bring hateful statements with no words to back them up. Makes me question if we watched the same show... He starts off in no way bland but more of an arrogant type, but has pretty more character then Takeru when is introduced at first. And Yuuya pretty much grows throughout the show and acknowledges his mistakes, so I don't see how he is so terrible? And saying that he is a knockoff of Takeru is pretty silly itself. It's not like Takeru is the most original protagonist out there. But I see that you're set on hating the series so there is no point in discussing anymore.1 point
