searching for a determinate protagonist personality ( on a vn of course )
Kenshin_sama and one other reacted to Clephas for a topic
Kaito is probably the closest you'll get, honestly... someone who had a brutally oppressed childhood and yet has a personality that - though twisted - is nonetheless extremely... 'forward'. The situation isn't a perfect mirror, but his disregard for conventions and common sense in the pursuit of his desires is pretty close to it, as well as his refusal to speak politely to well... anyone.2 points -
Well, translators of paper novels are usually writers themselves, or are at least closely involved in the craft (Jorge Luis Borges started as a translator). The issue is not that the translators can't be writers, but that there are very few translators (or even editors) in this industry who actually specialize in and understand writing. Koestl certainly seems like he understands what he's doing from what I've seen of his works, though. And Makoto's translations are usually spot on as well.2 points

Ladies and Gentlemen, Let's all give an amazing Fuwanovel "congratulations" to the winner of the 2015 best user award! Best User 2015 nohman Now I know the competition was tough this year, but it is with great honor that we are able to bestow such a prestigious victory to a member who has been on this site for so long. Having lost to Okami and the runner-up Façade in 2014, nohman came back with a vengeance and took the competition by storm. A marvelous display; words cannot describe this man's devotion to the arts. Again, congratulations my friend.1 point -

Mega Update - Please Read (OriginalRen)
Emi reacted to OriginalRen for a topic
Hey all, Long post coming your way. Most of the stuff listed below is a massive update on current Fuwanovel things as well as stuff outside of the site. I won't beat around the bush, so let's get right to it. Listed below is a table of contents, so feel free to read the whole post or jump to the section that pertains to you in some way. Table of Contents: 1. Current News 2. Shipment Updates - Order + Giveaway Prizes 3. Fuwanovel Games/Activities 4. Podcast Episodes 5. Akihabara Trip (Sunday, July 19th (19/07)) 6. Moe, Ass, and Lolis 1. Current News Akihabara has a few updates for July of 2015, so check out this video on my YouTube channel for all the latest information: In addition, I had some random thoughts about some items I found in Sofmap. I heard people are pretty hyped about the 1st game (?), and Flowers is ridiculously expensive (8,980 yen). More than the Ever17 bundle pack? I guess yuri folk are willing to pay an arm and a leg for their material. Images below. 2. Shipment Updates - Orders + Giveaway Prizes I have been working around the clock to try and make sure all of the Japanese orders are being shipped to their respective buyers/winners. Doing my best, but having 6 shipments in transit and a slew of other packaging to do this weekend, I can only do so much on top of work. I promise to have things done by the week of July 15th as promised (aka by the end of next weekend). Unfortunately, due to the the amount of shipments that need to be done this month, stuff still back in the United States (my hometown) will not be shipped until August. Sorry, that's just the way it needs to be done; handling 13 shipments is more than enough for me. I hope you can understand. Anyways, images below. Double check to make sure everything is correct. Oh, and if you had a package already sent, make sure to let me know when you get it so I can take you out of my PM list. You know, clutter and all of that fun stuff. B) 3. Fuwanovel Games/Activities After all of the July shipments have been sent, I will be updating the games I am currently running and devote more time to making sure they are run properly. This includes the following games: Graffiti Game Mystery! The color has gone missing from Fuwanovel! Can you follow the clues with fellow member Fuwsqui and solve the mystery? Link: http://forums.fuwanovel.net/topic/10884-graffiti-game-mystery Prize Includes: Grisaia no Kajitsu Collector's Edition or Angel Beats! Collector's Edition* Note: Prize selection will only be available for participants of the game and if the mystery itself is solved. Show By Post! A Musical Band Creation Activity Want to be a rock star? Come and see some of the amazing bands of Fuwanovel! Link: http://forums.fuwanovel.net/topic/10124-show-by-post-a-musical-band-creation-activity The musical band activity will be updated after the shipments, while the GGM activity will be updated on occasion. I will be setting a time limit for the game soon, so make sure you start solving that mystery, because the current phase is only the beginning... 4. Podcast Episodes At the end of the week, I will be posting 4 episodes (2 of which already have questions prepared). I will seek volunteers, and by the time my vacation comes, I will dish them all out. 2 of them are topics I think are interesting for discussion, while the 3rd and 4th ones feature OELVN groups here on the website. I look forward to more episodes soon! 5. Akihabara Trip (Sunday, July 19th (19/07)) I will be heading to Akiba this coming weekend. If you want to have something purchased from my service, now is the time to talk to me in the coming days to make sure I can get money from you in time for purchasing what you want. Curious about prices? Ask me. I will let you know the price. Curious about shipping? Here is an entire list of how shipping works in Japan: https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/charge/list/ems_all_en.html Most modern visual novels are around 500-700 grams in weight. Questions? Let me know, otherwise, PM me ASAP. 6. Moe, Ass, and Lolis Here's a free moe from Flutterz: Here's a free ass from me: And here's Hibiki (don't ban me please): *Subject to availability at Sofmap1 point -

Happy Sunday peeps! Let us begin with numbers. We are now 63% funded with over AUD$6k worth of pledges!! And we have exactly 2 more weeks to go! Although we have been getting pledges steadily, we are not sure if we could meet the goal at the end of it because pledges has not been coming in fast enough. Please take a look at this Kicktraq chart below: Although it's trending to hit 101%, we had better percentages previously... So we urge everyone, please help us to continue spreading the news to your fellow otome/visual novel gamers or anyone who is interested to see this game come to live! You can also help by voting for us on Steam Greenlight and also lend us your social media voice on Thunderclap. The Thunderclap system will not work if we do not hit 100 registered social media accounts. It doesn't matter if you are active or not, just register so that we can hit the target. For Steam, we are at 76% towards the Top 100 but let's try to boost it up faster! Ok, now let's move on to the more exciting part of the update, an interview with Sirius! Let's see what he has to say... Check out this link for the audio files. Somehow I couldn’t upload multiple audio files here. If anyone knows how, please PM! *Note: Some sentences are restructure in Japanese for a better flow. Interview with Sirius Interviewer: What type of a doctor are you? インタビュア: シリウスさんはどんな医者ですか? Sirius: The sort who heals people? Duh. シリウス: 普通に人間の医者だが?他に何があると言うのだ Interviewer: What do you like to do on your off days? インタビュア: 休日は何をして過ごしていますか? Sirius: Off days? That’s the life of a doctor. シリウス: 緊急患者がいれば夜中に寝始めた後午前三時に起きるのも異常ではないからな Interviewer: How would you describe yourself? インタビュア: 自分自身をどう思いますか? Sirius: An irresistibly handsome, sarcastic sociopath. シリウス: 超が付く程のイケメン、近寄りがたい人、かな Interview: That sounds complicated ... インタビュア: なんか....複雑ですね Sirius: Isn’t everything? シリウス: この世の全てそうだがな Interviewer: *shrug* Do you have a particular type of girl that you like? インタビュア: そうかもしれませんね。では次はどんな女性がタイプですか? Sirius: I like bony girls, with pale skin and deep set eyes, similar to her there, Ms. S. Just joking! Hahaha! Really. Although I look at my skeleton companion everyday doesn’t mean I have a crush on her. No, seriously. シリウス: 細く、色白で、奥深い目...そう、そこにいる骸骨の様に....くくっ、冗談ですよ。毎日標本の骸骨を見ているからって惚れているわけじゃあるまい。いや、本当に Interviewer: O…K … Among the other guys, who do you get along with? インタビュア: は、はぁ....では男性の方では何方と親しいですか? Can a serious story become a comedy because of poor translation?
Suzu Fanatic reacted to FirzenExpert for a topic
This topic should be closed. I have changed my opinion after continuing the story. The translation concerns I mentioned only spanned the first two scenes (in other words, a very tiny proportion of the story). After that, it was good translation. But I still think American slang in general should really be avoided in translation where possible. After all it is a story created in Japan with dialogue representing the place.1 point -

Can a serious story become a comedy because of poor translation?
Suzu Fanatic reacted to OriginalRen for a topic
It's not so much that I have a problem with translations, it's that people complain that most translations don't mantain the originality of the story. It's opinion, but I have always been baffled when people start arguing that a story isn't as good as the original. I see a lot of Japanese readers commenting in this thread. I respect Clephas immensely when he says something about these sorts of things considering how many Japanese visual novels he has played, more so how many books he has read in general. In the end, I just take their advice if I really want to complain about fan TLs: learn Japanese and read the stories in their original language.1 point -

My pragmatic thoughts. Edit: This is pretty much just a reason why most fantls haven't actually been sued or arrested... copyright law in general is most often enforced in relation to patents and situations where someone is actually making money off of pirated materials. However, indirect pressures such as the infamous Rapelay scandal and others like it could very well cause a crackdown on the community in general. Be aware of the current political atmosphere, because it does matter.1 point

Can a serious story become a comedy because of poor translation?
OriginalRen reacted to Clephas for a topic
Until about five years ago, most of the finished non-nukige projects were done by people that were better than the existing professional VN translators... but the best of those got co-opted or retired (with a few exceptions). Nowadays, most fantranslators are... *shrugs* It is sort of like the way CR and streaming sites put an end to most quality fansub groups, lol. Edit: I should say that there are always people who will fantranslate... but most have more passion than ability. The reason I don't look down on them for this is that everyone who wants to translate has to get used to translation somewhere... and without the fansubbing scene (which has contracted to the tiniest fraction of the dozens of groups that existed seven years ago), VN fantranslation is pretty much all there is. Also, there have always been bad translations... and translations that have absolutely nothing to do with the original material (an infamous example is the original localization of Final Fantasy IV, which was billed as 2 in the use for the SNES).1 point -
Shikomizue's Random Game Reviews: Resident Evil (Spoilers)
Deep Blue reacted to Shikomizue for a blog entry
RESIDENT EVIL Hello everybody, and welcome to my Random Game Reviews blog, where I'll make a review for whatever game I happen to be playing. Now then, where to start? How about at the start of the game? Seems logical. After selecting New Game you can pick one of two stories: Chris Redfield's story (which is basically hard-mode and the story I'd personally recommend for those that are playing RE for the first time), and Jill Valentine's story (of which is much easier than Chris' story). Depending on which story you picked you'll either have a helping hand (Jill), or you won't (Chris), but this review will mostly be following Chris' story because it's less of a hassle. After doing a few things, you're left with a knife, a pistol, and a few clips for said pistol. And that's it. Your goal is to find your missing team-mates and escape from this hell-hole. The game drops you into a hostile environment and you have to use your wits and whatever you can find to escape. I really like this. It sets the mood for horror, alone with not much in the way of artillery. Now, time to talk about the elements of this game. Starting off with something small, the graphics are pretty good with pre-rendered backgrounds. The voice acting is... well it's pretty laughable, it's so bad that I poke fun at it whenever I notice something that's way off. The soundtrack is very good, it keeps you on your toes, making you tense no matter what room you're in. The controls will probably take a little getting used to, as they didn't have analog sticks back then. The camera is static in this game, there's no way to control it. This can be horrifying when you don't know what's around the next corner. The gameplay keeps itself interesting by giving you new environments with new puzzles and new enemies. Though, I have a problem with how they presented one of the enemies. The Hunters. You get an FMV with the view of one of these Hunters and it is shown that it can open doors when, in fact, it cannot do so in-game. I understand that they wanted to make the player even more tense by showing this, but the fact remains that they can't open doors, which means they're lying to the player to make them more scared. This is really the only problem I have with the enemies though. If you haven't heard already, ammo in this game is scarce. But they give you just enough to survive, providing you don't waste too much of it. This is also another tactic to make you tenser, you don't want to waste too much ammo because you don't know what's out there. Another way they made the game scarier is by the storytelling from a certain file. The file on Plant 42. Just before you go down to the basement of the dormitory, they give you this file, and from the words in this file, you begin to imagine what horrors await you in the basement a horror trope known to be bad. I think this is genius, giving the player enough information to make them afraid of an area that could have nothing scary at all. All in all there's only one thing that bothers me in this game: The inconsistencies between Chris and Jill's stories. In Chris' story, you encounter Rebecca, the only surviving member of the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team. In Jill's story, you have Barry from the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team. If you get the best ending in either story you see your companion, Rebecca or Barry, in the helicopter with Chris and Jill. Yet, you don't see them both. This makes me confused, which one is cannon? Not only that, but Chris and Jill pick up the same pistol, shotgun and revolver. How does that happen? They seem like two separate stories that occur at different times in the mansion, but in reality, they're nearly the same, only a few things are different. They even fight the exact same bosses. They just copied one story, added a few differences to it and called it a new story. Besides that though, this is a really great game. A classic even. I definitely recommend this game to anyone who loves horror!1 point -

This is pretty much my feeling as well. Runescape is (or at least was) a good game. In fact, too good of a game. I was so addicted to it, that for the 2 years I played it was virtually the only thing I though about. The reason I don't want to ever play it again (and I suspect the reason others don't want to play it again either) is because they experienced similar addiction to the game. Not going to lie though, I do have fond memories of the game. This video is pretty nostalgic for me as well:1 point
