  3. PSA: every time someone uses the argument "if you criticize something you should just do it better yourself" I will kill their cat. Or dog. And take a dump on their walls. Also Tiago I didn't read all those gigantonormous walls of text but I think you're mistaken on the purpose of a review. Until someone proves me objectivity is a thing, I'll consider that the goal of a review is to bring up analysis/facts about a work and then proceed to emit an opinion about it - preferably an informed opinion. If batman says something like "the common route is very long with lots of repetitions" it's a fact. Up to him to like it or not but the reader has been informed that this is part of the game, and if he's a critical reader he'll figure out whether it would bother him or not. As for the 'informed opinion' part, I don't see any contextual information that could make the statement "I don't like the long and repetitive common route of LB!" a reading error or could explain how it's not really an issue at all.

  4. Access to information allows for a more stable understanding of a situation, and better planning - regardless of the subject. Not "being the cook" is irrelevant, it gives insight on the cooks behaviour, how skilled they are, and if they have any habits they fall into on a consistant basis. "can I trust this cook?" With SP being the core example in this case, it can give consumers a idea how SP operates as a business. A company that can't keep a firm handle on its own internal timetables and deadlines will rarely have the respect of a consumer (cough Jast cough). Another thing to consider, is that a consumer is also a potential investor. Who in their right mind would want to invest in a company that cannot provide confident, and regular reports on the level of productivity going on with each project under its umbrella?

  6. Oh, I see. VNDB's regular listing habits led me to believe otherwise. I would think that a game listed as two distinct entities on Steam would be likewise represented on VNDB. With this new information in mind, we can shift the discussion of this topic to hats. Did you know that the size of some hats is typically represented in gallons? Indeed, we're referring to the amount of liquid they can store. Here's an example of a 10-gallon hat:

  10. When you lock yourself onto one genre, and like it over the other, you simply can't be objective. That is a terrible idea. Whats the point of doing reviews if you only stick to what you like? Am I qualified to write this review? Just as qualified as any of you are. I think LB! is a bad VN. I'm also just some guy who reads VNs.

  12. I think so many members of the community having negative opinions of Little Busters! implies very strongly that we're spoiled in the west in terms of game quality. Since better games tend to get translated first, there aren't that many bad games out there to choose from if you can't read them in the original language. I agree with most of the negative points raised by the review and by the users here, but for me they didn't add up to a negative experience. I liked the game, even in the context of it being less transcendent than many other KEY games. To me it would be a shame if people avoided playing it because it scored this poorly on a review.

  15. I pretty much agree with Sanah on this. Exact project status is a luxury that normal customers do not need to know, nor are they entitled to that information. It's cool that MangaGamer does it, but if Sekai Project doesn't think it's worth their while, then, well, oh well. They operate like almost every single other video game developer/publisher in the world. It's unreasonable to expect more. Well, what IS reasonable, like Sanah says, is to expect more transparency when it comes to the 18+ stuff. Outside of that, I don't think anyone has a right to know SP's inner workings.

  21. Percentage updates on translation titles are only a 'thing' in fan-TL circles. A fan-TL group puts out such a progress update so they get more kudos, people know that they haven't disappeared (which might encourage others to leap on the project,) and most importantly they get more kudos. For professional development it's not regularly done. You don't see percent completion in Light Novel translations, novel translations, game translations, or any form of professional game development, you just get an estimated time of release (if they have one) and actual meaningful updates (with words and explanations) if the project was a kickstarter. Does it even tell the consumer anything by itself? Do remember that JAST's projects tend to get stuck on '99%' for a year or so before they're released, and sometimes progress will go backwards if mistakes are found (which they prob won't tell you, and will just display as a halting number.) How long has Subahibi been at 100% translated? Maybe people wouldn't be so impatient if they weren't watching the damn numbers go round and round. I don't see much benefit in knowing the precise numbers, and I don't consider it a luxury, numbers without context are meaningless. I also don't consider it a hallmark of a professional studio. Pretty much this. At the end of the day, I believe it's used by fan-translators as a shout out to fans that they're still working on it and a plea for encouragement. I don't see the point in a professional studio.

  28. Taiga's not trying to argue for bats to like LB! though, just pointing out that bats tastes simply weren't compatible with LB! which is why his review is so negative, and instead of offputting all potential readers of the review from reading LB! he should put a disclaimer like 'if you like boring loveable & endearing characters, monotonous drama enjoyable comedic common route & wtf Mio has a twin?! route, and a cop-out happy ending, this is the VN for you'

  37. There are not 8 translation projects on that list, but 6 of them. One of them is complete, another is a VN that is still actively in development in Japan, the rest besides WAS actually do receive updates. WAS hasn't received one since the alpha went live back in may and that's a pretty confusing situation.

    What are you playing?

Finished Corpse Party (except the Extra side stories; I'll get to those later I guess) Woot woot. Probably only like 5 of the 20 standard Wrong Ends (white stars) were "memorable" in that they were accompanied by a CG along with a decent-to-horrifying description of the character(s)' final moment(s). Every other Wrong End is just standard herpa-derpa you did something wrong, now you die!@# ~~ Oh boy how do I do this.. Misc. Thoughts/Ramblings(spoilers) Onto Book of Shadows!

    Rose Guns Days

First, I want to say thank you to those who patiently listened as I whined and complained about this VN as I played it. I should also explain what I was complaining about first, so that people don't get the impression that this is an awful VN, just because I have complaints about it. I'll place this in spoilers for people who don't care about my whining. Second, I should say that I have a firm belief that Ryukishi's VNs make better anime than they do VNs, because his scenario design is far better than his writing (not to mention his art). His love for torturing and killing his own characters is very similar to that of George Martin or Glen Cook, but he mixes it up with that peculiar disconnect from reality and surrealism that is unique to Japanese writers, especially when it comes to violence or sex, lol. The first part of this story looks like it comes out from a Japanese-colored version of our own film noir. To be honest, I found it pretty amusing and an overall fun ride. I cried and laughed with the characters, and I got to like the various people Rose and her crew met. The second part is somewhat less amusing, as it is mixed in with hope followed by a quick fall into despair, as things take a turn for the worse that never quite gets better. The third and last arc (there are four seasons but only three arcs, really) is devastatingly emotional and full of a despair far surpassing that of the first two. Friends die, others betray, and characters you have come to love suffer. In other words, it has all the ingredients you need for a good trilogy (which is what it feels like). The themes involved will probably confuse about fifty percent of those who read this who aren't from Asia. I'm not kidding. Simply put, it requires the ability to appreciate the character, weaknesses and strengths of the Chinese, Americans, and Japanese at the same time. As such, the learning curve for fully appreciating this VN is a bit steep. In fact, in some ways it is more steep than I/O because the matters it deals with aren't matters of science but of culture and people. I suggest anyone who wants to fully understand a lot of what they say - especially the exchanges between the Chinese mafia and Rose's people - read up on current events in the relations between Japan and China, because this story has been heavily influenced by the recent mess in diplomatic relations between the two. A lot of it is mixed up with the usual emotionalism that defines Japanese writing, but the core arguments are based in current events, rather than just ones of the distant past. Is this a good VN? That's an excellent question, me. To be honest, it is hard to say. There are a ridiculous number of flaws to the setting, and the writing, while much better than Ryuukishi07's past efforts, is still less than poetic (and his event descriptions are still as weak as ever). However, if you just look at the fun factor...? This is a fairly enjoyable experience. Oh, for those who hate to see characters they like suffer or die off or who can't deal with concepts like prostitution, organized crime, or corruption as a matter of daily life this would be a hard VN to read. In some ways, this is far darker than his past VNs, because the actual daily events include no sense of fantasy, save for the setting itself. As a result, people who could enjoy Higurashi, Umineko, and Higanbana with no problems might very well show signs of rejection with this one. At the same time, people who despised the others might very well like this one, because - while it does share all of Ryuukishi's usual habits - both bad and good - it is outside of his usual ballpark in the subject matter. Edit2: Whoops, the last edit was a bit too... sharp. To avoid controversy I have sealed it behind a spoiler tag. Read at your own risk.
