Y-You mean to tell me your bedsheets don't actually look like bloody warzones when you lose your virginity? Blasphemy! 2D could never possibly be wrong! This also applies to male anatomy, no human being in existence has that much semen stored up. They make it look like a broken water pump. Not to mention no human being can shoot said semen so many times so quickly, even 2 times in a row is already dodgy. I wouldn't say these crazy unrealistic scenarios are a huge turn off since I'm already so used to them, but it can get pretty ridiculous to where I'm just questioning why.3 points

Your biggest turn-offs in visual novels?
XReaper and one other reacted to CeruleanGamer for a topic
It's common not to like certain elements in visual novels even if they are your favorite ones. I'm curious what makes you guys hide under your seat, run away from your room as fast as you can, cover your face with your mousepad, hide behind your sister, kick, scream, and yell at your PC or simply Alt+F4 the game and never open it again. This may also be a thread to possibly discover hidden fetishes or other things to stay away from. Also, make sure to spoiler tag NSFW pics or story-related content. Here's my top no-no's for VNs.... - Cannibalism. After playing Yandere and Saya no Uta, this is something that really scared the crap out of me. I especially hate Vore/Cannibalism especially when there's blood and gore involved and not just swallowing. Although, I consider this cute: - Sex involving Faceless, Ugly, Fat, Old men who abuses the girl constantly. It's fine if a man only has 1 or 2 of the elements, but altogether, it's definitely something I want to avoid. It's rather common in NTRs, a genre I really love, but I simply can't stand a VN if the only man who the girl has sex with is this kind of guy. - Super duper dense male protagonist. The girl is literally pouring her heart out to confess her feelings, yelling in public to say she loves the protagonist to death and sometimes even stripping, and the male protagonist completely ignores her. Really not my cup of tea. - Snakes. Surprisingly I can tolerate tentacles (in fact I love them!) but snakes are a different story. Not fond of seeing snakes sinking their fangs on a girl. I especially don't like it if they go..... in "there". Well, you know what I mean... - Bara in Yaoi VNs. I'm fine with Yaoi but if BOTH men are "manly" men with heavy muscular features and giant dicks, It's something that turns me off. Like this one although this was from a doujin: I prefer one of the males in a yaoi couple to be more feminine just like in my ideal yuris where one of the female acts more manly (like a butch). - Bakunyuu. Gigantic breasts that no bra can contain. Not fan of breasts when they are 3-4x bigger than a woman's head. They are quite common in nukiges.2 points -
How to handle drama in VNs
Zalor and one other reacted to solidbatman for a topic
So this is something Ren and myself were discussing in regards to his Hoshizora and my Little Busters review. One of my biggest pet peeves in a VN is drama that just happens with no warning or hints, and completely changes the way the character in question acts. The best examples I can think of are Komari in Little Busters and Kotomi in Clannad. In both, and I'll keep this as spoiler free as possible, an event takes place, seemingly minor and inconsequential that suddenly changes the character into someone completely different. We get no hints of the sudden personality change, or no warning. It feels like it just happens out of no where. Think of a tumblr girl being triggered by the smallest thing, and that is what it sometimes looks like seeing these characters. Compare that to say, Kurugaya's route, or even Haruka in Little Busters. The drama in those routes does get hinted at, and does not feel totally out of left field. Is this a case of poor writing, or me not reading well enough to notice the most subtle of detail? Or is it something some of you can ignore and get past out of love for the character, story, or do you just like being caught off guard in that manner? How do you feel about a VN with Sudden Onset Drama Syndrome, or SODS?2 points -

Your biggest turn-offs in visual novels?

Well, to be fair, truly faithful and realistic sex would be really boring to read about. Some form of exaggeration is needed to actually make it charming, even if that type of behavior/scene doesn't happen in real life. There is however a threshold where it gets ridiculous, and that's what changes from person to person. To me, if a guy is just ejaculating over and over for the sake of cramming every sexual position in one scene, that's pretty ridiculous.2 points -
How to handle drama in VNs
Mr Poltroon and one other reacted to nohman for a topic
Not speaking to the examples provided, but is SODS always indicative of bad writing? You don't get the thrill of recollection that Palas mentioned and you don't get to make all the little connections in your head, but sometimes drama needs to be spontaneous and hit you like a truck - either due to the nature of the event or for artistic impact. Dramatic events aren't always explicitly or subtly telegraphed in real life after all and I could conceive of some examples where it would be more organic for there not to be any foreshadowing in the story at all.2 points -

Not to mention no human being can shoot said semen so many times so quickly, even 2 times in a row is already dodgy. You would be lucky to even find a noticeable spot on your bed. Some girls don't even bleed at all. Usually the blood just sticks on the guy's manhood and is easily cleaned with a tissue. Yeah this virginity blood is something that VNs exaggerated horribly. Oh my god, that semen release issue is something I should add on my list too. A guy being able to cum 5 times in a row without a minute of of rest may look like a stud (or one heck of a premature ejaculator) but I've never seen that happen irl. I love Majikoi and all but this is what makes go, "What!?" when Yamato comes 3-6 times in a row in a single H-scene. I don't think there's an H-scene across all games where he cums less than 3 times. Let me know when you find it. Kinda both. I mean for example if you absolutely hate NTR and rape, you won't be turn on sexually right? Or is this one of those "you may be saying you hate it, but your body is honest" type of scenario cliche. Man, I've heard that freaking line at least 50 times now in many forced/rape/NTR vns.2 points -

I guess it's supposed to turn on some people, but remains completely superfluous and inauthentic. People do various things during sex; Yes - they cry, but usually from joy (not because it's painful), laugh or stay calm and quiet. But for the love of gods, that kind of crying described in most vn's doesn't really happen; there are other, more important things people are usually occupied with than the pain (which lasts very shortly anyway)... unless the girl's forced to have sex, which would be completely justified, since it's more or less rape いいいいいいいやあああああ!ダメダメダメー!ここじゃダメー! Oh, the joys of japanese quality writing. What if no one cries? Yeah these vn heroines are wimps and crybabies. Losing your virginity is like a freaking bug bite if not like a injection shot at most if there is proper foreplay or lubrication. If the girl is using a tampon or inserted a vibrator in their vagina before, they have a heads up with sex penetration and somewhat adjust/recreate the angle on where they should feel good. Also, the hymen breaking is rather off the charts in vns too. It's not suppose to look like a period for gods sakes... I think most of this is just ignorance of the human anatomy... Not sure if more guys are h-scenes scenario writers but if you're a woman, you should not get this wrong at all!!! The only time it's really painful is if the guy forces it on you without foreplay or you're not relaxed while doing it (aka you're very stressed or being raped). - CeruleanGamer on female anatomy. =P2 points -

as for i, a novel should by no means consist of the following: • sloppy written endings, or those way too open conclusion-wise • illogical plot and other obviously inconsistencies • an author, who doesnt treat his characters with needed respect, like killing them off only for ahhhs & ohhhs • chracters displaying inconsequent behaviour, or acting against their personality for no reason • superficial stories as a means of personal escapism • soulless stuff which doesnt reach ones heart, ergo in which the author didnt pour his own into whilst writing • donkan, or hetare protagonists2 points

Let me know when you find it. Not a turn-off though for me. Why should my 2D porn be realistic lol Porn is meant to cater to fantasy, so I understand the being able to cum a bajillion times in a row for the guy (twice is about the best I can do when making the beast with two backs so to speak), so it not being realistic isnt a huge deal to me. I just dont get the crying, and screaming. Yeah the sex doesnt have to be realistic but blowing it out of proportions can be a turn off. The porn industry irl already does it. I heard from a good friend of mine who does short film porn that they have strict endurance and "size" requirements in the porn industry nowadays and they actually have to do some rather crazy stuff that's something you wouldn't do in the bed room. Also fans can appreciate a bit of realism and a VN is usually praised when it does especially in the storyline department.1 point -

There's a (missable, qq) event in LB's common route that creepily foreshadows Komari's. It really shouldn't have been. I'm not sure if I care, because I generally just go with and accept the plot, holes or no...1 point

It's great to see a great fantasy VN come out. Everyone I know from everywhere is raving about Utawarerumono 2. Hoping to get a PS4 someday to play those console games.1 point -
Finally finished Utawarerumono Itsuwari no Kamen and I can't really say anything but... wow. I wrote a big wall of text with my impressions here but for anyone who wants a tldr: Utaware2 turned out incredibly good and I recommend it even if you weren't super fond of the original (though it certainly adds to the experience if you were). I'd also encourage people who don't consider themselves good enough at japanese to read without a text hooker to challenge themselves and read it anyway. I had only read one japanese VN (Eustia) with the help of a text-hooker before reading Utawarerumono portable this summer and Itsuwari no Kamen is just my third VN in JP. The Utawarerumo series is probably one of the best examples to challenge oneself with as it's almost entirely voiced (even the narration). Just get an okayish phone dictionary (I use the free imiwa) and learn some basic stroke order so you can look up kanji using the SKIP method (radical search is awful for everything but very complicated kanji or kanji where you can't make out all the radicals) and you should be good to go. Big wall of text with impressions below.1 point

So much yes! This is everything that needs to be said. ^^ Really, if the story is good, everything is fine. Because in a good story, everything is part of the story thus it has a purpose. And I don't need to like everything I read because sometimes it's necessary to present even something unlikable to the reader to get the message across. If a novel doesn't challenge me in some way, it's not a story worth to be told, in my opinion. That said, bad writing is the only turn off for me. Some tropes are inherently bad writing style, like hetare and donkan, so those are obviously included.1 point

Not something I would do irl though because cleaning bed sheets of pee is a tedious task (from my babysitting days...) Oh and I forgot about Scat. Definitely something I dont want in VNs although farting during sex is something I can tolerate. Although I've only seen them in western romance novels and not Japanese visual novels.1 point -
Uhm, euphoria is certainly not a nukige. Most of the h-scenes are concentrated in the first part of the game which is only a small part of the whole eroge. Stating that 50% of the game are h-scenes is just plain wrong. There is much more to the game than most of you who haven't read it think and hentai scenes are only a small part of it. And most of them are actually important to the characterization and development.1 point

Is your Waifu popular? (Akinator)
CeruleanGamer reacted to shadowolf64 for a topic
The key for Akinator giving you more precise answers is not answering too many Don't Know, Probably Not. If you can answer questions with only Yes or No, Akinator can be pretty spot on. This means you need to have a good knowledge of your character. Yes, he can get pretty complex anime/vn characters as long as the vn has been translated or has a really popular wiki built around it. Yeah I probably did answer too many Don't Knows and Probablys. With Momoyo in particular I feel kinda weird answering some questions like "can your character use magic?" or "can your character fly?". Well its not called magic but in reality you can't shoot beams out of your hand and hover in mid air for your fights so... Guess I should have just picked an answer though.1 point -

Dark Eroge often have high sexual content. Some have a stronger story element than others. If you are used to playing dark eroge, you won't give more than a nod to the sex scenes in a story-heavy dark eroge like euphoria (it's expected they will be there, after all), instead you'll really notice, wow this actually really tells a story. But if you're like most people and aren't used to the extreme ero, it's going to stand out and probably change your experience of the story. Usually in a negative way, since even if they may be tied in plot wise, most of those scenes purpose is for porn.1 point -
