Hello and greetings from Germany. It's nice to be here. If my grammar is somewhat strange, don't bother - the english teached in german schools is somewhat crappy - had to learn it all from the internet. My favorite VN are Katawa Shoujo and Clannad (dem feels).3 points

onomatope*'s lastest title - Kyuuketsuki no Libra - is coming to Steam
FinalChaos and 2 others reacted to sanahtlig for a topic
You're voicing the same sentiment as Rooke. Let's be clear: this is a Kickstarter initiative for Kickstarter backers. Kickstarter backers are clearly NOT the mainstream audience. The game may be sold on Steam afterwards, but first and foremost this is a translation for the small section of the community that funds games on Kickstarter. We should reexamine our assumptions that the audiences on Steam (and elsewhere) and Kickstarter are equivalent with equivalent expectations. You and Rooke are championing a translation for the mainstream. But what if that's not what the hardcore fans supporting this on Kickstarter want? Appealing to the widest audience possible is usually--but not always--the best strategy. But sometimes it's best to focus on appealing to a specific target demographic. Remember: MiKandi Japan's goal isn't "Make visual novels popular in the West". It's to get this particular game funded. While those goals may be mostly compatible, they won't always align--and they don't need to.3 points -
I guess it's (once again) a prescriptive vs. descriptive approach issue. I'm not a fan of prescriptive institutions, since they are often basing their prescriptions off not very well-founded positions. I don't know about the english language prescriptive authorities but the Académie Française is pretty retarded sometimes. A prescriptive approach isn't going to work any tiny bit on spoken language anyway. No linguist ever cares about prescription, linguistics are all about description. Rules are not set in stone, they evolve based on numerous processes, and they're not even unique: everyone uses his own personal version of what is grouped by convention as a common language. Basically, rules come after the language, not before. Of course there are reasons to be a bit more careful about the way we write on the internet. First, written speech lacks features of oral speech that can carry meanings: tone, speed, specific speech patterns and peculiarities, behavior, etc... Not unrelated, our brain is pretty amazing at doing top-down processing in oral speech, and while pretty good it's just not as good in written speech. Writing in garbage english will also affect the image you give of yourself, and is a lack of respect for the person you're talking to. So yeah, there are good reasons to make an effort to use correct english. But for situations like this, I don't think there's any point in trying to find a prescription. Let's just see how it goes. There's very little chance that it will hinder communication, and even if it was a little bit of a hinder it would go away quickly because our brain is also fucking good at adapting to all sorts of speech environments (Remember the first time you went to 4chan and didn't understand one bit of wtf those guys were saying, only to be completely at ease with it a few days later. Okay maybe that example won't apply to everyone).2 points

Fuwanovel Confessions
Kawasumi and one other reacted to OriginalRen for a topic
Confession: I tend to keep this confession to myself, but I am a huge macrophile and love reading stories about it. I personally prefer rampage stories with a lot of growth sequences in them, mixed with some light vore, insertion, and crush scenes as well. For the vore bits, I prefer large groups of people being swallowed whole; "chewing" and graphic descriptions are not my cup of tea.2 points -

MiKandi Japan and one other reacted to Conjueror for a topic
Ah, sorry, that came out much harsher than I intended. It's just that the strange translation philosophy set off an alarm bell in my mind, and I thought it wouldn't hurt Mikandi to check if the guys they hired really know what they're doing while it's still not too late. All I want is for visual novels to grow and be recognized by general public, and including weeaboo lexicon that is alien to everyone except the already established audience in official translations doesn't bode too well for that. I've already seen some mainstream people mocking Steins;Gate for including all those redundant japanisms, and therefore not sounding like a professional translation (and it didn't have anything even close to desu afaik). In any case, I have yet to see "desu" transliterated in any of the professionally translated novels and video games that I've gone through, and I don't see why visual novels should be an exception to the rule. Godspeed to Mikandi for trying to localize more of our niche medium, but translating it in the language that only the established fanbase would ever understand will only hold it back, regardless of how good the actual translation is.2 points -

So this the next VN to be released by Clock Up on November 27th. OP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNK7WZRVZtQ Trial version http://clockup.net/maggotbaits/download.html or http://www.getchu.com/soft.phtml?id=867581 Story http://clockup.net/maggotbaits/story.html A bit more stuff about the VN http://clockup.net/staff/date/2015/09/ Seems like it might pick up where euphoria left off in terms of "might be a nukige, but definitely worth playing for the story, anyway". Also, the OP is pretty cool.1 point -

How to replay routes in Hoshizora no Memoria?
voidpointer reacted to Nosebleed for a topic
Yes, you can. Pretty much all visual novels let you save and load during the choices so you can continue from there next time. Hoshimemo actually makes the route finding process even easier for you by telling you which choice gives you what character whenever you complete their route. So for example, if you finish Asuho's route, when you replay the game again, it'll tell you which choices lead you to Asuho's route (there's a little character icon on the choice), so you can pick different choices instead.1 point -

What Video Games Are You Playing Right Now?
LiquidShu reacted to Turnip Sensei for a topic
I've only played the Normal Deception IV, and liked. It's really satisfying to set up trap combos, theory craft new ones and watching the poor soldiers suffer in goofy ways. Some bosses can be annoying since they have tendency to avoid your traps and require really specific set-ups. Sometimes this works really well, sometimes it devolves in to repeating same gimmick over and over, and whittling the boss down. The Nightmare Princess adds tons of new traps and locations to spice up the gameplay, but more importantly the new character can attack enemies by kicking them into traps. In normal Deception IV you can only run away from enemies and luring them into your traps which felt sometimes kind of passive, but the kicking fixes that a little. Overall, it's pretty fun Action Puzzle game. Using stationary traps as your sole means of offense is pretty unique and strangely addicting.1 point -
I probably got the "True End" or something equivalent. I met my high school sweetheart at 16, went through some trials, had a strict father, father eventually became more lax after we wouldn't stop seeing each other, married at 21, everyone is happy. (Okay, married life isn't all fun and games haha.) When we first met, he was actually going out with my friend, but I REALLY liked him and wrote him letters. She ended up cheating on him. I sneaked out of my house and crawled through my woods to meet up with him at the end of the driveway. (To comfort him, of course. :p) The moon was full. We didn't kiss, but we talked until five in the morning. There are many cliches in this story. XD1 point

There's a very slight connotative difference between them. They all mean "meet". 逢う is more like "fated to meet" with a feeling of mutual affection. 遭う is the opposite. It carries a connotation of an unexpected meeting wanted by neither parties. It's also used for ひどい目に遭う. There's also 遇う which carries a meeting by accident connotation (neutral or positive). 会う is neutral and all-purpose. If you don't know what to use, use this one.1 point -

Welcome to the Fuwa! If anything, you should boast about reading VNs at university. Most English lit departments are all about taking "low" culture and recontextualizing it as a scholarly pursuit these days. Just tell them you're studying non-linear narrative theory, mention Derrida a few times, and Bob's your uncle. You'll be the rising star of the department.1 point

They're English words now, not Japanese. They originated in Japan, but are in English dictionaries and used in English, just as the majority of our words are from foreign languages and not just middle/old English. If you want to have a conversation about whether you think those words should be pluralised or not, then you can, but there isn't any set rule for doing it. Just because Japan doesn't use plurals for those, doesn't mean they can't in English, and doesn't mean we can't even completely fuck it up to make it the way we want either. There's tonnes of examples of that, and they're mostly words you don't even think are wrong because you don't know. I'm already doubting much of a conversation about this anyway, because メ is not pronounced "mey." Japanese does not have diphthongs.1 point

People make it sound like nukige carries a negative value when really it mostly refers to the ratio of story x sex scenes and how the plot is handled in a way to lead to those scenes. Unless you show this game spends the majority of time developing the story rather than showing you sex scenes, then it's a nukige. That doesn't however imply it can't have a good story behind it, just that a majority of the time you'll be looking at sex scenes.1 point
