End of the year is near! Favorite moment of 2015?
SaintOfVoid and 2 others reacted to Chronopolis for a topic
Favourite Visual Novels of 2015 Huh, out of these, SC2VN is the only one released in 2015, with Kami no ue having came out last December. They're also mostly pretty dark VN's (*shivers*). Now that I think about it, people have been playing a lot of dark vns these last 6 months. Favourite VN hype thread of the year: Maggot baits. Who would have thought I would get that hyped up for a VN only to go "nope" at the content. It was silly but the best kind of silly. Favourite VN reviews/suggestions: xReaper in "what are you playing", clephas's enduring blog, and decay's euphoria review. Even though there were some good VN's I don't think they were my highlight of the year. Met more people, did some blog posts, became a savage vn hunter on vndb, starting buying vns on dlsite. I guess my favorite part of the year was meeting more of you guys and talking about vns. You guys rock. And we got Euphoria and now Gahkthun released this year. It's good to see VN's and fuwanovel flourishing.3 points -

I'm gonna be that one guy who says all the mushy stuff so bear with me here. I joined Fuwa on February 24th and a lot has happened since then. I learned more about Visual Novels, I joined the anime club and I met lots of people here. I'll start from the beginning. My introduction thread: I decided to sign up and join this community since I wanted more info about VNs and there seemed to be a multitude of nice people here. My thread was nothing special compared to all the others, but it's interesting to go back and see all those that greeted me are people I know/are familiar to me now. I also hadn't watched many anime back then either, just the most popular stuff that looked good such as One Piece. The Ambidex Game: Not too long after joining, I found in the Member's Lounge the Ambidex Game run by Stray Cat at that time. It looked like a nice opportunity to meet some people so I said why not and signed up. I met quite a few individuals there, such as the aforementioned Stray Cat, Tiago F.Varela, Funyarinpa, Kurisu-Chan, LinovaA, Cyrille and probably a few others that I can't remember at the moment. The Anime Club: I joined the club in February as well, it was an interesting experience. It was my first time joining a club of some sort. I joined for the same reason as the Ambidex Game and that it would be a good chance to find new anime to watch. My visits to Fuwa continued peacefully like this for a while till late June, when Stray Cat left the site for certain reasons. He put me in charge of the club since I was most qualified, being there every cycle for the last few cycles. We didn't contact each other again till a little later. A Friendship is Born: A little while after Stray left, KosakiFag had commented on one of my status things that nobody uses anymore. We had a conversation about that, then we played Osu together and learned stuff about each other. I then made a PM where we talked for a while. Eventually, he asked if I had a Skype account and if we could talk there. I said I'd make one and we started talking through that. Not too long after, Kosaki told Stray that I had a Skype account and we started a group chat. Over time we added more people to the group and we talk pretty often. Some Miscellaneous Stuff: I started my Strange Stories sometime before Stray left and have been writing them ever since, even if they're few and far in between. I finally finished Rewrite a few months ago and I started up Majikoi soon after. All in all, these are my favorite moments of the year and my favorite year so far. I hope to be here for many years to come!3 points -

Joining Fuwanovel last August. Best decision of my life. I've lurked for a couple years without registering... After I did, I met all these wonderful people with the same passion as me, I also get to introduce people to the wonderful place of New Netorare City, NTR and also piling up on hundreds of backlogs of VNs I still yet to play because you are all awesome people with awesome recommendations. Best VN moment: No doubt it's euphoria and going to the forums reading people's posts about how they are going insane with the whole thing. That shit was priceless. Best forum moment: The turn-offs thread I made: http://forums.fuwanovel.net/topic/11970-your-biggest-turn-offs-in-visual-novels/?page=1 Reading it gave me lots of LOLz. Oh and Dustmania thread is close second.2 points -

Eiyuu*Senki Original/Gold Discussion
Bastian77 reacted to CeruleanGamer for a topic
So this game has been sitting on my backlog for a year now and I just got notified an English patch for the PC came out for it like a couple weeks ago? This game is already on the PS3 but I believe that one is censored/LOLallages version? Anyways, the H-scenes are untranslated but the story/interface are all in English now. If you want to see the h-scenes, you may need to create 2 folders of game, one with the English patch and one without. One without will have the h-scenes to available as long as you have the save file. Game info: https://vndb.org/v6458 NEW: Eiyuu Senki Gold Dressbreak CGs: http://www.mediafire.com/download/asgh7ans6k748da/Eiyuu+Senki+Gold+Dressbreak+CGs.zip The setting is pretty similar to Sengoku Rance where you conquer lands and fight leaders all based on real life people (like Oda Nobunaga, Marco Polo, Sun Tzu, Caesar, King Arthur, Columbus, etc.) but are genderbended as females. It has an unnamed protagonist who is a little less forceful and more female friendly than Rance, so imo he seems more likable. The gameplay is rather addicting and you have can have these many units at once! I love the combat interface and it's very easy to understand after an hour or so of playing. The story is linear but you can choose which country (or babe) you want to conquer first. Also..... Lu Bu, one of my favorite characters from Dynasty Warriors has now been transformed into one hot and feisty chick (the one on the far right): Although I don't mind this version. She's quite a looker.1 point -
[Spoilers] Star Wars VII Discussion
kingdomcome reacted to Nosebleed for a topic
Warning: I will assume people who read this thread have watched the movie. If you haven't, there will be heavy spoilers below. You have been warned. Okay so I watched the movie last night in a theatre with a couple of my friends and we discussed it a little bit but I wanted to think back on it before making a thread here. Now that i have slept on the issue, here are some of my thoughts on the newest movie. First off, let me just start by saying I really enjoyed the movie and have no regrets about seeing it. It never once got boring to watch and it packed all the action you could have wanted from Star Wars in 2 hours. Visually speaking, it was also great, everything from character designs to special effects felt like the producers have watched Star Wars and wanted to remain faithful to its style and what its fans love, and I really tip my hat off to that. In terms of soundtrack, something Star Wars is also known for, I found the movie to be less memorable in comparison to the first movies, but nonetheless utilizing the music to its benefit, so at least there was no jarring flaws with the soundtrack either. The fights, oh man the fights, from spaceships to light saber fights, the choreography was fast paced and spot on in its delivery, really showing the potential modern day film combat can bring. I think it was a very nice way to kick off the franchise once again, but with everything that's good, there's going to be some bad associated with it, and after thinking about it I do find some important flaws this movie has that sort of break the immersion a little bit, and as I'm sure it is the same with a lot of people, most of these flaws come from the characters, but some with the story. Starting with the movie's plot itself, please tell me I'm not the only one who feels like the entire movie was just a huge rehash of episode IV. Now look, I'm all cool with playing the nostalgia card, I was thrilled when I saw the Millenium Falcon, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C3PO, Leia and all the other things and references from the previous movies show up, but the overarching plot and narrative of the movie was literally the same as episode IV's plot: Droid has something important > Empire wants it > Random people find it > They bring it to the rebelssistance > Dark side has a new death star > They're going to destroy everything > Death Star hasa fatal flaw > Our heroes end up saving the day after drafting up a plan. There was no element of surprise when it came to the story itself, everything played out exactly like in episode IV, except this time the Death Star was the size of a planet and fed off on suns. For the love of god, who builds these death machines with a tunnel that leads to the core so it can just be destroyed? I mean, you'd figure Empire 2.0 would learn from the mistakes of its predecessors, but I guess not. It's not that the story itself doesn't hold up, it's just that it felt so much like a clone of Episode IV with small little tweaks that it feels a little cheap when you think back on it. When I left the theatre, I thought the movie was fun, had lots of great moments, but in the back of my head I just think "I've seen this story already", and that's sort of a joy kill. But moving on to the characters, and where I find the biggest problems with the movie to lie. Starting off with the new protagonist, Rey. Rey is basically Luke 2.0 when it comes ot her origin story. I know she is his daughter, but you could have made her a bit less obviously the same as Luke in terms of background. However, my biggest problem with Rey comes from the fact that she's essentially a Mary Sue. Do you know why Luke had charm? Because he starts off as a kid with little experience and gets defeated in the first movies, and then gets strong enough to fight back, but even when he fights back, he's still pretty much on par with Darth Vader and not even a match for the emperor's powers. But Rey? Rey can literally do anything in the film, she's pretty much flawless in everything she does there, so much so that the movie almost ends up devolving into this "So how is Rey going to save everything now?" type of back and forth. She's able to pilot the Millennium Falcon right from the start, better than freaking Lando Calrissian in episode VI, even though she doesn't appear to have any prior experience with it. But even accepting that she's somehow a skilled pilot, you can not tell me her becoming a Jedi master in mere minutes, when Luke himself had to train with Yoda to be able to even offer some kind of meaningful resistence, is somehow justified. I was baffled that she suddenly is able to use the force to such an extent that she can defeat Kylo Ren every time and escape every single trap she's put in, it just didn't feel believable that such a Jedi newbie could go so far when they had not had any sort of experience whatsoever and I was a little underwhelmed by her character because of it. I applaud them for introducing a strong female protagonist, she really felt like she could grow so much, but I did not expect that growth to be like this. If you introduce a character and make them exceed at everything they do right from the start, there's honestly not much to like or relate to about them, they just become this figure that you know is never going to lose, and that broke off the tension for me a lot of the times. Moving on to Finn. I don't have a lot of problems with Finn's personality and way of acting and I actually really found his premise to be the most interesting out of all the characters. He was freed from the grasp of the First Order and wants to get away, a completely reasonable choice to make, but my major problem with his character was how he came to be. He's a soldier who was trained from when he was a child to be a lifeless murderer, just like every single storm trooper ever, and you're going to tell me he, and just he could suddenly flip a switch inside his head that made him realize: "Wait a minute, this is fucked up" ? I had a very hard time coming to terms with the way this character is born, and I honestly still do, it just doesn't feel consistent with everything that's happened before. Outside of that, there's that one part where it's revealed Finn was essentially just a janitor in Death Star 2.0, yet he's essentially able to deactivate its shields and know basically everything about the biggest death gun the empire has yet built, I can't help but question how these people instruct their troops if even a janitor is able to take out the entire base if they just have outside help. Lastly, Kylo Ren, or should I say, emo kid who's totally not going through a phase, dad! When I first saw Kylo Ren, I thought he looked menacing as hell, his character design is so good and the light saber he has just helps make him look all edgy. But the moment you're revealed who he is and the moment he takes off his mask... oh boy the disappointment settled in. Why did you take off the mask, Ren? He looks like he's about to cry every time he takes off the mask like some emo teenager who had daddy issues. Now don't get me wrong, I'm okay with a more emotionally unstable version of Darth Vader, there's a lot of potential in him for the upcoming films and even Darth Vader himself started off as more emotionally unstable, but Kylo Ren just didn't have the presence you'd normally think of when you think of a main villain, and the fact that he clearly showcases how strongly he uses the force, yet gets instantly defeated by Rey was really the biggest issue I had with the movie. Rey being a Mary Sue and Kylo Ren being really weak at the end just didn't add up to me and I feel as though she should not have won so easily against someone who's supposed to be the next Vader. But I don't think all hope is lost, my thinking is that Kylo Ren will now be transformed into a murder machine like Vader was in the upcoming movies and Rey will actually get strong using the proper methods, then we'll have a more decent fight between the two, but man these two characters really felt like they had their roles reversed and the immersion kinda broke at the end because of it for me. To close off the rant, I still would like to say I loved the movie and I think there's extra potential for the upcoming movies because of it, so there's nothing that makes the movie really bad or anything of the sort, and if you're reading this thread without having seen it, I avidly recommend you do so, because it really is great. Nonetheless, when you compare it to its prequels, I do think this movie had some rather apparent flaws, which I genuinely hope will be fixed in the future, and of course I'll be going to both sequels whenever they come out. So what are your thoughts on the movie and the reboot of the franchise in general?1 point -

Hello boys and girls of fuwa! Christmas is just around the corner, so on that note, merry christmas everyone! That also means that the end of the year is coming up, and so I wanted to ask, what has been your favorite VN moment of 2015? If you haven't really read any new titles, you can mention a moment from an old novel that you have read this year, of course. It also doesn't have to be a moment from a VN, but something that has happened on the forum or maybe a kickstarter campain or upcoming title that was announced this year etc etc. Please remember to use spoiler tags and write above the spoiler what title its from if its needed, so the thread isnt a minefield of spoilers. The release of Clannad in the west was something I've been uber hyped for and it was actually also one of the reasons I came to Fuwa, so that is quite memorable thing for me. Also, my favorite VN moment of 2015 has been getting my sanity completely shattered and played with by Euphoria's true ending ... Anyways, again, merry christmas to everyone, and I look forward to seeing what 2016 has in store for us1 point -

Dergonu reacted to Turnip Sensei for a topic
I'm a newcomer of this year as well, and it's been awesome! Not only Fuwa was the first forum I've ever joined, but it's also been a place talk about my weeb hobbies freely. I would have probably continued reading visual novels without joining, but the amazing community really helped my love for VNs reach new heights. I'll let numbers talk in my stead; 35 is roughly the amount of VNs I've read this year, not counting the ones I have started, but not finished yet. Pointing out one special moment would be pretty hard since there has been so many good ones, but if I had to name some standouts they would probably be: Sharnoth & Inganock, Narcissu, Blue*, Fate/Holl... You know what, I can't even choose my favorites, that's how many great VNs I've read. Reading Club has been huge part of the experience for me as well. The old reading club helped me to get integrated to the community, the new one has been a place for exiting conversations and for trying all different visual novels, especially those that I might neglect by myself. Anime Club has also became a stable part of my activities and although it's not as lively anymore, it's still plenty cozy. The balance between awesome series and some random stuff I never knew even existed being recommended takes care of most of my anime needs these days.1 point -

The animations look fine to me (I'm not used to seeing them in a VN so I'm a bit taken aback, haha). Small point of critique: I'd love to see some more expressions since this is something that bothers me in a lot of VN's (things like shame/embarrassment, ...). Steam winter sale
Mr Poltroon reacted to madvanced for a topic
Golly, no. Right there you are recommending people the worst way to shop during these Steam sales. Flash and Community Choice have disappeared, but we have the Daily Highlighted Deals which, as one might guess, will change every day, and usually will have a higher discount than the global one. So, if anyone wants a game, and it's not on the current Daily Highlighted Deals, simply Wishlist it, since that way you can get an email the moment it goes into a better discount. And if a game doesn't go into the daily deals, then buy it the last day of the Winter Sale (the 4th), since it'll still have the global discount. Missed a daily deal? Don't worry too much! On the last day, Steam usually has the encore sale, where the most popular games get their Daily Highlighted Deals price again. Actually the highlighted deals are just a feature kind of thing, as in to get more visibility to those specific deals, the games themselves offer no further discounts. There are no timed deals whatsoever, including daily deals, in this sale, so he really just told the rest of the people that didn't know about this, that they should just get shit and that's it.1 point -

Like Shiko, Cerulean, and others, I also joined Fuwa this year (which is hard to believe! It kinda feels like I've always been here) - that was certainly the biggest VN event of the year for me. It's been great meeting you all! Only one of my friends is an otaku, and he's basically a shounen anime guy, so I don't get a lot of opportunity to talk about this sort of stuff with anybody else. I love being part of a friendly, welcoming community that keeps a good mix of serious conversation and messing around, open critique and well-deserved praise, and all centered around this hobby that I don't have any other outlet for. So, thanks everybody! And I suppose I should call out the VNs I read this year that were special for me. I'm pretty new to VNs, so of course they're mostly (entirely?) old classics. I thoroughly enjoyed each of these, but I won't ramble on about them here; if you want to see that, go dig up my chatter in the What Are You Playing thread or the corresponding Reading Club thread: Symphonic Rain, Comyu, Fate/Stay Night, and Sekien no Inganock. It's worth mentioning that three of the four of those were part of the Reading Club, and though I probably would have read Symphonic Rain even if it hadn't won, I probably wouldn't have picked up the other two if not for that Reading Club. So, it seems the revival of the reading club this year was also a pretty big event for me. Here's to hoping we have another reading club revival next year!1 point -

Regarding visual novels, I'd say the confirmation of Mangagamer's partnership with Alicesoft, starting with Beat Blades Haruka. It's great, yeah, but I wish it happened after Rance 5D and VI was released. Now a lot of people are stuck waiting for an uncertain possibility of them being imported to the West. ...Guess it's faster to learn Japanese.1 point -

Why do gamers care so much about getting 1080p and 60 FPS?
solidbatman reacted to Down for a topic
I think the dick-measuring contest explanation is simple but not simplistic and covers a good part of it. The "gamer" community is a community where a lot of people hold masculinistic values like competition in very high regard (whether consciously or unconsciously, and whether in a healthy or unhealthy way). It's also a very consumerism-minded community, one just needs to see how much video games are viewed as "products" rather than creations or piece of entertainment or w/e. What also kinda makes me sneer is the race towards hyper-realism. It's like nobody realized painting went down the same path hundreds of years ago and only found a dead end. Of course the circumstances are quite different but I feel like the conclusion will only be the same. We're already seeing alternative paths develop quite a lot with the boom of retro-gaming, retro-like aesthetics, 2D simple games, etc... but AAA games are still running in the same direction without even stopping to think.1 point -

None of my incarnations has ever been very good at pretending to be nice. Yes, that is an understatement, from a purely objective perspective. However, when you are a sentient universe-eating monster that used to be a fat, bald otaku from a frontier planet in a rather pathetic galaxy in an even more pathetic universe, it is kind of hard to understand how to be ‘nice’. Understand, I was just out to have a few drinks, perhaps eat some of the more nasty criminals that infested the city of Neo Lovenia, and maybe find a few people worth loving… I had no intention of getting involved in something so utterly boring as a slum-dwellers’ riot when I left the sewer-level apartment I’d chosen more out of memories of a certain child’s cartoon back ‘home’ than any practical reasons. Unfortunately, as with most matters involving mortals, I wasn’t exactly given a choice whether to get involved or not. Especially when a really pretty girl hidden under the rags of a filthy slum-dwelling piece of mortal trash was tossed off a bridge, straight into my arms… That, in and of itself, would not have been much of a problem. On any other day, I would have simply eaten the girl, made her into one of my trillions of immortal servants, then gone on about the business of getting myself debauched in the biggest city on one of the most degenerate planets in all of that particular universe. Unfortunately, the men in the silly blue robes with the magic staffs had the bad taste to try to blast me with lightning bolts, probably thinking I was one of the girl’s allies. Since this verged on that most terrible of all sins, incivility, I decided to retaliate in kind. It wasn’t my fault that the fragile matter of that particular space-time continuum wasn’t up to the task of withstanding the equivalent of a sigh of exasperation from me. The bridge, the rioting slum-dwellers in their filthy rags, and the entire unit of what passed for police on that particular sorry excuse for a civilized world, were suddenly wiped from existence, along with a large portion of the surrounding streets and buildings… and a perfect half-sphere of the water running through the reservoir below. Needless to say, I was somewhat dismayed. While I tended to devour all sorts of nasty things in my true form, I generally refrained from drinking the water on planets like that one… one could never tell just what was in it, after all. The oily taste of rotten fish and the bits of effluvia that tended to infest the waters on backward worlds like this one filled my mouth, reminding me of why I generally refrained from such activities when in mortal form. The girl in my arms was quite unconscious, and I was briefly tempted to just toss her in the river and be done with it… but she was also unreasonably pretty underneath all that grime. So pretty, in fact, that she reminded me of my own mortal days, when I spent most of every day staring at a computer screen at animated beauty because the world around me was so ugly. As such, I believe that it is only reasonable that I should be forgiven for deciding to refrain from eating her before I got to know her. Once an erogamer, always an erogamer, after all. Having returned to my home, such as it was, I found myself at a loss. Being a sensible creature, I’d long-since arranged for my own pocket dimension full of all the creature comforts to follow me wherever I went, and there was no chance of trouble from the outside entering without my permission. Unfortunately, I had seemingly lost my wits, deciding to bring a mere mortal child, however pretty, to my sanctum, full of walls of eroge, anime blu-rays, and video games from every era of my pox-infested homeworld’s technological age. As such, I was quite well-aware that my home wasn’t exactly suitable for the inhabitance of beings of the female persuasion. The nightmare of many otakus yet to obtain the power of true enlightenment, of taking a girlfriend home only for her to find out about his hidden passions and reject him furiously, briefly raised its head. I shook my head, smiling somewhat wryly at my rather prosaic worry. After all, if all else failed I could always eat the girl anyway. Pretty as she was, she would be even prettier with glowing orange eyes and a bear-trap smile full of endless hunger. However, now that I had refrained from eating her once, I found it difficult to consider doing so anyway. I am nothing if not stubborn, as a particularly bone-headed (literally) Neanderthal discovered when we got into a headbutting contest during one of my many pleasure trips to my homeworld’s distant past. So it was that I found myself transforming the girl’s rags into a simple kimono (again, once a weaboo, always a weaboo), cleaning her body by the simple expedient of turning all non-living matter on the surface of her skin into quick-evaporating anti-bacterial soap. Why did I have to inherit the original’s otaku-obsessions? I wondered, feeling a bit exasperated. All of the avatars made by the original have their own quirks and individual leanings, though the essential nature of the being we represent is unchangeable. However, I am one of the few unfortunates to have inherited the original’s ‘hobby’ and tastes. The one thing all of us inherit is ‘hunger’. It takes different forms, depending on the individual, but all of us eat people. If it is the simple fondness one might have for their favorite meal, the result tends to be what most mortal races would call a ‘monster’. The individual’s basic personality survives being eaten… but their body and their desires are changed drastically. In the billions of years since my maker had eaten this particular universe, I’d come to understand just how differently our emotions toward those we eat effect various species. If we happened to actually know and like the person in question, the result that came out the other side was generally superficially unchanged… after all, the more we know and like someone, the less likely we are to want to turn them into a duplicate of ourselves. But I digress. I was speaking of our ‘hunger’. In some cases it manifests as lust, in others it manifests as greed, in some it manifests as sadism, and yet in others it can manifest as a desire to kill. It isn’t always negative… if it was, very few universes would have managed to survive our presence. In my case, it is pride, the desire for recognition given free reign. Need I state how paradoxical my otaku hobbies and my ‘hunger’ are? I’ve not quite gone so far down that path as the original went… so I’m not about to proudly state that I love eroge to the world. Unfortunately, that meant that I was generally forced to hide my hobbies on whatever world I chose to use as a foothold at a given time. As such, I vanished the various otaku paraphernalia in the room, transforming the walls into something resembling the inside of a castle lord’s room from the Middle Ages (imagined by me), with a four-poster canopied bed, deep purple silk sheets, covering the walls with bookshelves filled old-fashioned hand-written, hand-bound books in the local language (translated in an instant). As a bow to my ever-present weabooism, I left the katana and wakizashi hanging sheathed on nails driven into the wall and the set of samurai armor I’d created in one of my all-too-common fits of obsessive madness on its stand in the corner of the room closest to the heavy varnished-wood door. I took another look at the girl and sighed deeply. Her fuzzy black cat ears and silky black tail attracted my otaku-obsessions like a fly to honey, and the fact that she was a Japanese-style bishoujo only made it worse (considering the whole reason this universe had been devoured was because the original found out there were naturally-occurring cat-people there). The urge to eat her was briefly overwhelming, but it soon receded, tamed by certain… other feelings. Unlike the original, I have some restraint, after all. I picked her up, threw her over my shoulder like a sack of potatoes, and carried her over to the bed, where I dropped her, covering her with a down-filled quilt I materialized out of thin air. Her white, oh-so-white skin which contrasted so wonderfully with her midnight-black hair once again invited me to dine upon my guest, but I had little difficulty suppressing the urge this time. That done, I picked a random book off of the shelves and began reading, Hmm… Waylander by Gemmel… my original’s tastes are a bit predictable. I reflected as I waited for her to wake. The story was about a kingslayer assassin, and it was written by one of the original’s childhood favorite authors. While the story started as a straightforward revenge story, describing the rapid collapse of the man who became Waylander into the worst pits of human nature, it was still an enjoyable read… very much like cheap fantasy junk food. A few hours later, I sensed her stirring in the bed, her ears twitching and her breathing becoming shallower. An instant later, she shot upright, screaming. Irritated, I created a sound barrier around her head and waited for her to stop. The cat-like ears of the native form I was using were highly sensitive, and her screaming could have awakened the dead. I observed her closely, seeing that her wide, unfocused eyes were a large, brilliant emerald in color and her teeth had the prominent canines that distinguished her visually from humankind, together with her ears and tail. Eventually, her eyes focused, and her screaming stopped, and I released the sound barrier, waiting for her to speak. “…w…wh…who are you?” She asked in obvious confusion, her voice hoarse, most likely from the screaming. “My name is Clephas.” I replied, giving her what I thought was a gentle, reassuring smile.1 point

Miniature Garden
Chronopolis reacted to Mephisto for a topic
Miniature Garden is a doujin game made by Sekilala (their first game) Link to game >> http://www.dlsite.com/maniax/work/=/product_id/RJ141831.html Link to circle >> http://circlesekilala.blog.fc2.com/ Back in elementary school I remember seeing a motivational poster that said "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll end up among the stars." Although this is a bit of a cliche phrase, it is rather accurate when being applied to Miniature Garden. The game was extremely ambitious in terms of plot and although in the end I feel it fell short, the game is still easily one of the best doujin games I've played. Overall the actual plot/story behind the game was pretty interesting and enjoying to read, but I feel there's quite a bit of lost potential in things they did not explore, as well as in their presentation of the plot points. The game was moving along at a pretty decent pace, and then suddenly hit the "Charlotte" button and all hell broke loose. I still ended up finishing the game due to wanting to know what was going on, although I didn't really like how a lot of the information dumps were presented. Now then, to the game itself. Although Miniature Garden is a doujin game and indeed suffers from problems doujin game makers have to deal with, it is still different from most doujin games. Miniature Garden is a scenario-based RPG game that actually attempts and to some degree succeeds at having a serious plot. The actual writing in the game in reference to style and character design is actually done quite well, and doesn't make me want to tear my hair out due to characters not making sense or just being plain stupid. I did indeed get frustrated at some parts with some plot elements, but I ended up going with it since I wanted to see where they were headed. The game play elements in the game are actually relatively unique, and follow the philosophy of skill > stats, which I enjoy. The art was pretty decent and quite high quality for a doujin game, especially one that wasn't 100% nukige, and I enjoyed the music as well as music usage since it was the type of music I like. A lot of the erotic content can be opt-out of by not losing, which is good since pretty much all the ero content is rape (if that's your thing, then you'll probably like the ero content in the game since it's pretty well done). I can't really say too much on that regard due to skipping most of it except for when some parts actually seemed plot related. Short Introduction to the Story I'll make an effort to not be too spoilerly, but if you intend to read the game, read as little as possible. This game is enjoyed best going in blind. Miniature Garden is a game that follows the story of a young human girl named Kureha, who has succeeded in the herculean task of not pissing me off despite being a character archetype I despise. A theme consistent in Japanese writing is a character that is just really nice that the readers can side with, and you'll see it in pretty much every game (example Eustia, from Aiyoku no Eustia). Miniature Garden actually succeeds in this department to an astounding degree by succeeding in creating this "nice person" character that the reader sides with without making the reader think "that's complete bullshit. why do you even exist". Kureha is actually important and does stuff, and her kind nature is kept in check by the realities of the setting instead of getting free plot armor so everything goes her way. Setting The actual world is quite interesting. Race is incredibly important in this game, as well as the social hierarchy between the different races. Each race has their own village, and for the most part the races all co-exist with each other (although of course there is conflict). Imagine a political setting in which there are an innumerous amount of factions divided along racial lines, with the faction at the bottom being naturally selected for extinction. That gives a general idea of the situation of the game. The factions near the top have a lot of power and don't really have too much to worry about except keeping their power. The factions in the middle are safe, but always need to be vigilant and keep close tabs on the balance of power in order to try to rise to the top, and avoid falling to the bottom. The bottom factions live under constant pressure with the threat of extinction looming over their heads, and pretty much lack the tools to improve their situation (there is a reason they are there in the first place). To give a glimpse at some of the social standings, elves are one of the top factions, humans are in the lower part of the middle factions, and goblins are among the bottom factions. This environment is probably one of the best parts of the game, as there is so much that can be done with a situation like this, and the game does explore some of the possibilities. Religion Religion is a kind of important factor in the game as it relates to the plot, although it isn't developed on too deeply. Monsters, demons, and angels exist in this world. Attending church and receiving the protection of the Angels is important to the survival of one's race. Angels are tied to the thoughts of virtue, while Demons are tied to lust. I won't go too much in to the church since it's mainly a plot device, although as always you can spout some religious symbolism bullshit and whatnot. Atmosphere I’m not entirely sure if many people actually care about this, however this is extremely important for me. It greatly affects how well I can enjoy a game, and thus I will talk about what I liked about the atmosphere in the game. To sum up the atmosphere of the story, is that it is governed by a strong contrast between the light and dark forces within the game. (this ain’t no moege!) The real world is a dark place, filled with irrational and the unreasonable. However, in order to maintain our sanity we turn our eyes away from such things and live to the best of our abilities. Miniature garden is a dark world, and the darkness is just around the corner, but we as a player for the most part turn our eyes away from this darkness and instead indulge in the relatively cheerful and hopeful environment that surrounds the main character and the story(before Charlotte button is pressed). However that is only during the day time, for darkness, terror, and cruelty rule the night. When the character goes to bed, we are once more reminded of the darkness of the world from which we are not released until night passes, and the character wakes up once more. The first half of the game is predominantly filled with nice stuff/light, while the latter half is filled with darkness. Main Characters Kureha A young human girl who serves as our main protagonist. She is extremely kind, as well as naive, but she is not stupid. One of the two important human characters in this world, she serves as the "adventurer" type who is able to fight monsters with modern day weaponry(literally the weapon you start out with is a submachinegun). Her work usually consists of collecting materials, fighting monsters, and helping people in need. She suffers from some form of amnesia, in which she is simply unable to remember anything. Due to this, she needs other people around her and she keeps a diary to help her remember what she has done. (Kind of a spoiler since it's kind of a plot point, but there's so much foreshadowing it's not hard to figure it out pretty early in to the game) The writers did a pretty good job making her likable and believable, and it's possible to make her memory loss believable as well if they turn it in to anterograde amnesia. Luna A fairy with a dirty mouth that is basically Bell from Cocoro Function. She was told to look after Kureha by Agriel since Agriel would not always be able to see Kureha due to other obligations. Although that was the start of the two's relationship, Luna grows fond of Kureha and they become close friends. She's pretty perverted, and quite helpful in combat. Agriel An elf onee-san like character who has a pretty powerful presence throughout the game due to her influence on other characters. She doesn't show up too often due to actually being quite busy and doing stuff, and not being able to see Kureha often due to the discord between humans and elves. I think I like her combat style the most. She uses a bow. Shion The other important human character in this world. Shion is a genius engineer who makes weapons and tunes them for Kureha. She is an important part of Kureha's support network, and is responsible for a lot of the more technical/practical needs that show up in the game. Best friend character. Noa/Noir A succubus with two personalities (twin sisters). Noa is kind of like a weaker version of Kureha, a sheltered frail girl that one wants to protect, while Noir is more powerful and has a stronger personality. Noir wants to shelter Noa, and has a deep convoluted role in the plot of the game that comes in to play after the Charlotte button is pressed. Gameplay The gameplay is scenario based with a two-stage combat mechanic. The first stage is the standard dungeon-crawling set up, with monsters you can see on the map. Monsters have a detection circle, and if you engage with them while undetected by their detection circle, you gain an advantage going in to combat. The character also has a certain number of ranged attacks (type changes based on character) as well as SP for skills. If a monster engages in combat with you from behind, you gain a disadvantage going in to combat. The second stage is real-time combat. You press the left/right arrow keys to switch between enemies targeted, z to shoot with your weapon, a s d to switch stances, and x to activate skills. When your ammo goes to 0, you need to reload, during which you need to wait for the gauge under your health to fill up. Some guns refill one bullet at the time, while the submachinegun needs to wait till it can refill all the way to full before you get any bullets back. (You don’t need to empty the canister before reloading). Each character combat mechanics are a bit different, but essentially you want to stay alive, and bring the enemy’s HP to 0. Enemies also have a “break” gauge, which if you max out by launching repeated attacks stuns the enemy. This resets the gauge to 0, and makes it harder to max out based on each successive stun. (Gauge cannot be built while stunned) A degree of skill is required to actually beat the bosses/harder monsters in the game, as you need to manage your skills/ammo and enemy break gauges well. One annoying combat related thing is your clothes, which breaks as you take damage. This damage is permanent on non-story missions, which is fucking annoying. If you run out of non-broken clothes to change in to, you can’t go back in to town and you’re basically just stuck if you press X to open the menu if you were moved back to town with broken clothes. You can avoid this by just taking off all your clothes at the start of every non-story mission, although this will cause you to take more damage from monsters. If there are any outfits you like, be careful not to ruin them. The game is very close to creating an extremely interesting/entertaining combat system, but falls short of actually completing what they started. The first stage of combat is new, interesting, and excellently done. The second stage is where the potential is unfulfilled. The part they get right is related to the basic combat mechanics. Fights are actually difficult, and your ability to get through the battles is related to how well you set up the battle beforehand, and how good you are with the mechanics of the game. Leveling up or whatever and improving your weapon does help, but your skill is much more important than your stats, which is how it should be. The part they fell short on is adding colorful/interesting elements to the second phase of combat. There are some special effects that exist which are interesting to a degree (oil + fire combination one of the more interesting ones), but the combat could be a lot more engrossing if they fully fleshed out the clothes mechanic. Right now the clothing mechanic is just kinda stupid and annoying, with your clothes disappearing as you take damage with them on. (Separate from HP). If they had the enemies have special/different attacks based on clothing, and made clothing repairable at least able to be remade if broken, the gameplay would be a lot better. (Maybe make clothing status apply special effects to the character as well.) There is some other stuff to say, but this is kind of getting long already. I might provide a plot summary later, as well as my thoughts on that portion of the plot for people who can't read japanese/don't want to read the game. Edit: Oh yeah, I just noticed, there's basically no fucking male characters in the game except for monsters. what the fuck man1 point -
Root Double- Before Crime * After Days - Kickstarter launched!
kingdomcome reacted to Suzu Fanatic for a topic
Personally I'd "like" to get Root Double, but I'm getting a bit tired with the whole pre-purchase process Sekai is angling at. I'm already waiting for about 6 other titles to come to life that I have backed as it is. Esp. when you consider the technical conundrum that they "could" just take the money and run - it would be business suicide, sure - but crowdfunding currently does not count as legally-binding purchases, but rather donations, at the core. Not really inclined to throw any more of money into the void until I see some concrete results (on new titles, rather then re-sold fan TLs with some polish, and short indie titles)1 point -
