Hello there, I almost forgot to introduce myself. I'm Illusion, I have been reading visual novel for a long time. As I said at "What was your first VN and how was it?", my first visual novel was Little Busters and I turned into an avid reader. It is not my first time here on Fuwanovel, I really value your efforts to make VNs popular here in the west. I do not know what to say... I have read some light novels as well, I do not like manga though. I read mostly untranslated ones, my favourite works are plot-based, despite this I still enjoy some moeges. I apologise for my bad writing, I am not a native speaker but I hope we get along. Regards.4 points

Funny, I did exactly the same in the last weeks. Finished the game yesterday. I don't know what to think about Ar nosurge. It's by far the best exa_pico game in terms of romance. Cass and Delta are probably the most awesome couple I saw in the last few years in a JRPG. They are so lovely-dovey with each other, it makes my heart going fuwa very strong. I usually don't like tsundere characters but Cass is so adorable honest and fragile with her personality. And Delta is a really good-hearted guy without being boring or lame. I love how the game has nearly no harem vibe (aside from stupid side-stories which really were unnecessary) and two predetermined couples, so we get to see relationship building without the boring who gets whom part. That said, I have to say that Earthes is sadly the worst character of all and kinda brings the whole game down. Ironically, when I started the game I thought he would be the character and his relationship with Ion would be the one I will like the most. That's because the Anata-concept in Ciel nosurge was executed flawlessly and I think Ciel is one of the best selfinserting "dating sims" ever made. Earthes execution in Ar nosurge however is ... horrible. He is the worst character of the cast and that's because he is supposed to be "me", but I never felt that this would be the case. Instead, everything Earthes did, I didn't want him to do. But the game forces me to do this stuff! And the games also want me to want to do it. But this doesn't work at all. When I want to be empathetic, the game forces me to be a smartass. When I want to act, the game forces me to be an hetare. When I want to be raburabu with Ion, the game forces me to flirt with other characters. WTF. Epic fail. The ending is the worst of all. Having no "Shut the fuck up, bitch"-choice ruined my immersion completely.2 points

Except that Commies not the only team working on an English translation of Mahoyo, a team over at beast lair is and they already released a 5 chapter partial. Anyways, I am not upset about it going official, its great news because it means we might have a shot at an official Sakura no Uta Localization plus Subahibi is worth buying and the fact that I dont have to throw money at another annoying kickstarter campaign all the better.2 points

First, this VN is done in a similar vein to that of the Chuushingura VN, in that it is historical fiction with elements of fantasy. In this case, the protagonist is Okita Soujirou, the infamous Shinsengumi swordsman (in this case a trap, lol, since the Shinsengumi are all women). For those wondering how they chose to do this VN, it is pretty interesting. I have so far played three of the four end-story arcs (Hijikata and Kondou share the same arc, as do the Saitou/Sanou and the Sakuma/Higo pair). The 'true history' arc is Kou's ending, which follows the same basic story as the original history, with the minor addition of the fantasy element. In this one, the protagonist's fate follows history exactly, as does that of the Shinsengumi. The other paths I've played are the Sakuma arc and the Sakamoto Ryouma arc. Sakamoto Ryouma, who was infamous for his (in this case her) neutrality and what were considered wild ideas by many, was assassinated after he succeeded in making arrangements that might have brought about a peaceful end to the Shogunate, were it not for certain events. This arc is something of a what-if story, where Ryouma wasn't assassinated and you get to see how that alters history. It is a threesome ending, with the infamous Tosa assassin Iori as the other part of the triangle, lol. Sakuma was a famous scholar and scientist who advised the Shogunate in the years leading up to the war and was eventually assassinated, leaving the shogunate without its primary scholar of foreign technology. This is also a what-if story, where Sakuma survives to alter the fate of Japan. Sano and Saitou's ending is basically an alternate epilogue that is a part of the same path. The last arc, which I'm playing at the moment (I will edit/update this post when it is done) looks like it focuses on a Hijikata and Kondou, and I'm interested to see how they'll handle that. A few comments on the story in general... one thing is that this VN, like Chuushingura, gives you a lot of insight into an era that is a bit overly romanticized, retaining a strong element of that same romanticism while at the same time going into the gory details of what went on (both political and literally gory details, lol). The degree of detail in this VN will probably be overwhelming for the average person, and I can see that they are lining the story in general up so that they can later create a 'true ending' fandisc, if the VN is well-received. To be honest, the linguistic difficulty of this VN stays around a 7-9 throughout its length, and I honestly can't see it being comprehensible for someone who isn't at least familiar with the historical outline of what happened in Japan between 1861-1868. Another thing to understand is that anyone who reads this with even a slightly objective point of view should be able to see how this era eventually resulted in the birth of the insane nationalism that defined Imperial-era Japan before and during World War II, and it does indeed touch on many of the underlying issues that created the antagonism toward the West in Japan. It doesn't gloss over economic or political issues (in fact, those are central to the progression of the story), and as a result, it can be a bit confusing if you've only heard one side of the story (the average western textbook doesn't mention the unequal treaties, the bombardment of Ezo, Satsuma's brief conflict with Britain, or the element of proxy war between France and England involved in their internal civil war). For weaboos, this is pure crack, just like Chuushingura. Sure, it is bloody, violent, and shows off the less romantic side of the fall of the shogunate... but the Shinsengumi fights are as wonderfully violent as you would expect from the legends (even up to the recreation of the infamous Ikeda-ya incident). As a VN, it is also probably the most solid VN, from a literary perspective, written this year, simply because they simply added on and breathed life into the existing history and romanticized events of the era. What-if stories about Sakomoto Ryouma surviving aren't uncommon in jidaigeki historical fiction, but this is the first time a VN has gone into this much detail on the era. PS: Will update this later. Edit: Ok... first, the Hijikata/Kondou paths are both split out of the Kou path (so naturally, the protagonist's fate doesn't change), but in exchange, the endgame changes greatly, diverging from history (where Kondou was executed and Hijikata died in the battle for Hokkaido). Nonetheless, the story is definitely a tearful one, with the more traditional 'tragic hero of the losing side' feeling that you generally expect from Shinsengumi-related stories. The actual storytelling between Kondou and Hijikata's paths doesn't change much, though the actual end result does indeed change. Overall, this VN was a good experience for me... I got deeply emotionally involved with the characters, weeping over their suffering and glorying over their triumphs, and I honestly felt that it did justice to the writer's expressed intent 'Shinsengumi with an element of steampunk fantasy'. Shuuri's path (Sakuma's arc) touched the most deeply on the steampunk elements, for those who are interested, and honestly, I preferred the Ryouma and Sakuma arcs over the Shinsengumi ending arc. Nonetheless, the VN as a whole was immensely enjoyable. However, I do think this needs a true ending arc, and I honestly hope that Takaya Aya (the main scenario writer for this VN and most of Caramel Box's other VNs) will produce a fandisc to fulfill that desire for me, lol. That said, this was an immensely satisfying VN with no real downsides, save that the protagonist was only partially voiced (probably due to budgetary constraints). Edit 2: Just so no one mistakes my feelings about this VN, the endings and the paths themselves are satisfying. My single complaint - that there isn't a unifying true ending and it felt like there should have been - is mostly because I was put into that kind of mood after an experience that was in someways similar to Chuushingura (except the protagonist kills LOTS of people, lol).1 point

Welcome, Lucius. Learn japanese is not tough at all. Based on my experience, if you want to read without help of any tool (e.g. JParser to put furigana above kanjis), one~two years might be insufficient time to learn enough kanji and vocabulary. Well, it is because I did wasted time instead study kanji hard, so I think I took more time. Anyway, I do not want to desmotivate you, I think if you study kanji hard (unlike me), maybe you can do it in 2 years. If you do not care about kanji (you can even put furigana above the kanjis using tools), you should be able to read easily the majority of visual novel in 1-2 years.1 point
-
Ahhh, years you said? Gah, I guess I wouldn't mind devoting about 5 years to learning Japanese if I could no longer have the need to rely on translations to read visual novels anymore. I just hope that it's possible to have an end-goal in sight rather than finding out later that you need a whole lifetime of Japanese-learning to truly enjoy visual novels. lol Well, although it will most likely take a few years to be able to read without any programs at all, during the learning period you can still read things untranslated with the aid of programs, such as text hookers and parsers. And let me tell you, there is nothing more satisfying than actually being able to understand lines in the VN, completely without the help of the programs; actually noticing your improvement. It's a long ride, but it will be worth it in the long run if you are actually serious about it and want to do it. I'm sure some of the other members who have actually know Japanese can give a little more info on this topic. Anyways, I've ranted long enough. Again, welcome to the forum!1 point

I figured that I'd quote your reply since you asked me a direct question and all- ...and hooboy it's sort of a doozy. My favorite VN is probably... well, the Higurashi series (all eight original arcs, please don't make me choose just one of them). I have sort of a weakness for horror stories, especially the more psychological ones- and I thought the writing did a good job with the lighter moments so that when Bad Stuff happened, I actually cared about what was going on. ...I mean it's such a shock, someone using a Corpse Party avatar has a thing for horror VNs, right? Thanks all for the welcome messages- we'll see if I can manage to stick around.1 point

so far not dissappointed by izumo4, getting some pretty neat oldschool vibes from it, but for those still beeing sceptical because of debonosus former works partly questionable quality, its dialogues & writing in general appear way more refined than in those, which is mostly due to light´s staff (though kurashiki also worked for clockup etc) having handled all the scenario & music to try doing the series justice by creating something that feels epic to the reader himself. like tyrosin mentioned, there´s a reason to it, why they decided on releasing it under studio e-go & not debonosu, but best see for yourself... edit. lots of battle mikos everywhere catering towards the strong miko fetish of mine.1 point

The Kaguya is Always Right Foundation "Chat and Ask Us Anything" Thread
AaronIsCrunchy reacted to Kaguya for a topic
Half the problem. I've had three changes of plan since I've left school (I'm still a first year at uni because of it) and am now in a constant rut of believing that whatever choice I make will inevitably be the wrong one. Gone from accounting qualifications, to maths degree, to history degree, and now I'm starting to wonder if it's really what I want with my life too. Just a big old pile of ugh at the moment. Applied for a few jobs about a month ago (nowt major, just to make some money), but I didn't land any of them so I gotta just keep tacking away at that. Could always have a stab at volunteering somewhere if nowt else works. I have/had a job back home which was only a part-time thing but I really loved, so I kinda regret not sticking at that. Thanks though. It's summat to think about at any rate Cookies are top tier, good choice. I don't get you people. The "right" job is a job that pays you enough to cover your expenses (and probably enough to keep savings for emergencies). Do medicine or something. You're not meant to have fun with your work. You're probably an otaku, so pirate everything and your entertainment should be cheap, at least. Aaron. They better be crunchy. Does socializing in real life interest you? If so, in what way? I'd go for another serious relationship, though I'd need to find someone submissive beyond belief. Other than that, having friends who like similar things to talk to and travel with would be nice.1 point -
