  1. Current Candidates Natsuiro Recipe Kikan Bakumatsu Ibun Last Cavalier Runners-up/Honorable Mention Silverio Vendetta (rejected because, despite my fondness for it, the path imbalance was a bit too extreme) Koko Kara Natsu no Innocence (just not quite there) Hatsuru Koto Naku Mirai Yori (not really a possibility, because of the improper utilization of moe elements, weakness of Meltina's and the zombie girl's path) Sakura no Uta (rejected for various reasons, but the largest one is the weakness of the true ending/path) Kyuuketsu Hime no Libra (not really a candidate, but it was worth taking note of) Sakura Nikagetsu (high quality storytelling... but the visual aspects made it fall behind Natsuiro) Sorcery Jokers (chuuni honorable mention, but it had a number of flaws, including one of its protagonists being the classic 'angsty teenaged hero' type) Love Rec. (worth noting and it is indeed enjoyable, but it doesn't quite make it there) Ayakashi Contract (AXL did an excellent job with this one... but it still just feels like 'yet another AXL VN') Sumire (unique, protagonist is an adult, utilizes an older, somewhat dated storytelling style, but it really does pick its readers) Koitama (interesting concept, generally fun, but not really a VN of the Year candidate) Chrono Clock (interesting, good concept, good scenario design... but it just isn't quite there) Hanasaki Work Spring (similar to above, good concept and nice scenario but it just isn't VN of the Year material) Valkyrie Runabout (funny, enjoyable, but too 'light' in content for VN of the Year) Hana no No ni Saku Utakata no (one of this year's few serious candidates, it fell only just behind Natsuiro) Soreyori no Prologue (classic Minori, with both the negatives and positives associated with that category) Sanoba Witch (Yuzusoft doing what it does best... but it is still just not quite there)

    Fuwanovel Confessions

I had a dream a while ago (don't even know how long), about everyone here on Fuwa. We were all on this spaceship or something and I decided we should have a party for some reason, I don't remember much, but I think we were fighting some kind of threat. At the end I think, Funya and Cyr got together for whatever reason, and I had a crush on Cyr too apparently so I was salty. I had another dream about that same universe today, where Cyr and Funya weren't doing so well. That and we had to exterminate these rat-like things that had some sort of disease. My dreams make no sense.

  8. I am upset about lack of confidence in people words. And I am upset is that old fansub scene is dead, everyone went from hobby to salary. I am not upset about going official, I am just do not want to get hyped before getting official KeroQ announcement. And I really do not want any mosaics, that's a most important thing for me when anyone speak about western release. If this all would be true and no mosaics - I would be happy. It is not like I am against any official release, I just want to have all done in good way (yeah, I have an examples done in bad way, that's why I am so skeptic). So in essence you are upset because people want to be paid for their work?

  11. First, this VN is done in a similar vein to that of the Chuushingura VN, in that it is historical fiction with elements of fantasy. In this case, the protagonist is Okita Soujirou, the infamous Shinsengumi swordsman (in this case a trap, lol, since the Shinsengumi are all women). For those wondering how they chose to do this VN, it is pretty interesting. I have so far played three of the four end-story arcs (Hijikata and Kondou share the same arc, as do the Saitou/Sanou and the Sakuma/Higo pair). The 'true history' arc is Kou's ending, which follows the same basic story as the original history, with the minor addition of the fantasy element. In this one, the protagonist's fate follows history exactly, as does that of the Shinsengumi. The other paths I've played are the Sakuma arc and the Sakamoto Ryouma arc. Sakamoto Ryouma, who was infamous for his (in this case her) neutrality and what were considered wild ideas by many, was assassinated after he succeeded in making arrangements that might have brought about a peaceful end to the Shogunate, were it not for certain events. This arc is something of a what-if story, where Ryouma wasn't assassinated and you get to see how that alters history. It is a threesome ending, with the infamous Tosa assassin Iori as the other part of the triangle, lol. Sakuma was a famous scholar and scientist who advised the Shogunate in the years leading up to the war and was eventually assassinated, leaving the shogunate without its primary scholar of foreign technology. This is also a what-if story, where Sakuma survives to alter the fate of Japan. Sano and Saitou's ending is basically an alternate epilogue that is a part of the same path. The last arc, which I'm playing at the moment (I will edit/update this post when it is done) looks like it focuses on a Hijikata and Kondou, and I'm interested to see how they'll handle that. A few comments on the story in general... one thing is that this VN, like Chuushingura, gives you a lot of insight into an era that is a bit overly romanticized, retaining a strong element of that same romanticism while at the same time going into the gory details of what went on (both political and literally gory details, lol). The degree of detail in this VN will probably be overwhelming for the average person, and I can see that they are lining the story in general up so that they can later create a 'true ending' fandisc, if the VN is well-received. To be honest, the linguistic difficulty of this VN stays around a 7-9 throughout its length, and I honestly can't see it being comprehensible for someone who isn't at least familiar with the historical outline of what happened in Japan between 1861-1868. Another thing to understand is that anyone who reads this with even a slightly objective point of view should be able to see how this era eventually resulted in the birth of the insane nationalism that defined Imperial-era Japan before and during World War II, and it does indeed touch on many of the underlying issues that created the antagonism toward the West in Japan. It doesn't gloss over economic or political issues (in fact, those are central to the progression of the story), and as a result, it can be a bit confusing if you've only heard one side of the story (the average western textbook doesn't mention the unequal treaties, the bombardment of Ezo, Satsuma's brief conflict with Britain, or the element of proxy war between France and England involved in their internal civil war). For weaboos, this is pure crack, just like Chuushingura. Sure, it is bloody, violent, and shows off the less romantic side of the fall of the shogunate... but the Shinsengumi fights are as wonderfully violent as you would expect from the legends (even up to the recreation of the infamous Ikeda-ya incident). As a VN, it is also probably the most solid VN, from a literary perspective, written this year, simply because they simply added on and breathed life into the existing history and romanticized events of the era. What-if stories about Sakomoto Ryouma surviving aren't uncommon in jidaigeki historical fiction, but this is the first time a VN has gone into this much detail on the era. PS: Will update this later. Edit: Ok... first, the Hijikata/Kondou paths are both split out of the Kou path (so naturally, the protagonist's fate doesn't change), but in exchange, the endgame changes greatly, diverging from history (where Kondou was executed and Hijikata died in the battle for Hokkaido). Nonetheless, the story is definitely a tearful one, with the more traditional 'tragic hero of the losing side' feeling that you generally expect from Shinsengumi-related stories. The actual storytelling between Kondou and Hijikata's paths doesn't change much, though the actual end result does indeed change. Overall, this VN was a good experience for me... I got deeply emotionally involved with the characters, weeping over their suffering and glorying over their triumphs, and I honestly felt that it did justice to the writer's expressed intent 'Shinsengumi with an element of steampunk fantasy'. Shuuri's path (Sakuma's arc) touched the most deeply on the steampunk elements, for those who are interested, and honestly, I preferred the Ryouma and Sakuma arcs over the Shinsengumi ending arc. Nonetheless, the VN as a whole was immensely enjoyable. However, I do think this needs a true ending arc, and I honestly hope that Takaya Aya (the main scenario writer for this VN and most of Caramel Box's other VNs) will produce a fandisc to fulfill that desire for me, lol. That said, this was an immensely satisfying VN with no real downsides, save that the protagonist was only partially voiced (probably due to budgetary constraints). Edit 2: Just so no one mistakes my feelings about this VN, the endings and the paths themselves are satisfying. My single complaint - that there isn't a unifying true ending and it felt like there should have been - is mostly because I was put into that kind of mood after an experience that was in someways similar to Chuushingura (except the protagonist kills LOTS of people, lol).

  23. I watched a lot of anime in the past before reading VN. Could understand simple dialogue and make out the meaning from translation programs. Since you have some chinese knowledge like me, it is simpler. After learning Hiragana and Katakana, and tried to study a bit of the kanji started reading VN. Knowledge seems fine, but I was stuck up with trying to read correctly per phrase, that's why I tried study kanji. But it came naturally while playing with voices that read out loud for you. P.S Forgot to mention, I self study. Not yet find time to take up courses. And welcome. Not telling you to take JPLT, just showing a chart I found recently. 24. I can't believe I missed this excellent thread until now. It might be because I already find Cer's VN taste a bit intimidating, so something that she thought of as "radical" would probably come off to me as "terrifying"... but I mustered my courage to read the thread anyway, and it's great! I tend to find setting very important, so I tried to think of some unusual ones. I was amused to find that the "Submarine" tag has no fewer than 12 matching VNs on VNDB. However, none of them appears to be a locked-room mystery, so I present: A submarine captain is murdered with a firearm, but mysteriously nobody aboard the cramped boat hears it occur. Our protagonist, the chef, becomes the ranking officer overnight, but with no better alibi than peeling potatoes, he'll certainly be named the primary suspect when the sub reaches port. He's got his eye on the wily and attractive ship physician, whose heated arguments with the captain were common mess hall gossip, but the true motive may be something far more personal. Will he crack the case in time, or is it his future to waste away in military prison like so much rotting produce? Edit: Ok, here's a much better idea: A charage where you play as Baldr, Norse God of Light. You spend your days with your osananajimi, the gorgeous but unreliable gender-bent Loki; you spend your nights carousing in Valhalla, wooing women. The game has 3 heroines, each with their own True Ending. After the credits roll at the end of the route, we see a final cutscene: Baldr and heroine, dead in the snow. Heroine has a bullet through her head, and Baldr has a hole where his heart used to be. A little further away, we see Loki, her back to us, a glock in one hand and a piece of mistletoe, dripping blood and gore, in the other. After you complete all the True Endings, the Lie Ending route becomes available. Baldr and yandere Loki get together. In the post-credit cutscene for the Lie Ending, Loki and Baldr are leaning towards each other for a kiss. Loki blushes furiously, while Baldr looks uneasily upwards, where Loki holds a piece of mistletoe above their heads.

  25. I can't really remember the EXACT first VN I played- it was some old JAST title, I think though. Largely you just had to roam around until you'd triggered all the h-scenes and then there was one ending with the gal I liked the least out of the cast. Not a very rosy start. The first VN I remembered LIKING was Nocturnal Illusion/s (I forget if it was a plural or not)- still had the same sort of 'roam around until you bump into the hentai scenes, rinse, repeat' sort of formula... but there was some vague horror-y/fairytale motifs and at the time I was quite happy to find that you could PICK which heroine you ended up with, even if it was off of a drop-down list. Of course I've since moved on to more involved VNs (and at the time I didn't even know there was a GENRE call 'visual novel'), but for some reason that game has always stuck in my head.

  27. I recently put up a blog post about how 2015 is devoid of anything I can honestly put in a VN Hall of Fame... but that doesn't mean there aren't any VNs worth playing from 2015. However, the sheer amount of dross in a given year's releases means that figuring out what VNs are worth your time is a serious chore. I chose to start with 2014 and move into 2015 (I'll update this list after December's VN of the Month is over), as I don't have the energy to sift through 2011-2013 right now, lol. Understand, these are opinions based on my own experience, and these recommendations for those who basically 'can't bring themselves to play the old stuff', so I'm restricting it to post-2010 releases, as that was when the current styles began to emerge. For now... 2014 and 2015. 2012 Gun Knight Girl (also known as Yandere and Mechs Festival, for those in the know) Ore to 5-nin no Yome wa Raburabu na no wa, Mirai kara Kita Aka-chan no Okage ni Chigainai! (yes, this is a harem-ge, but it is also immensely amusing and generally fun to read) Yaneura no Kanojo (also known as Konakana 2... but unlike its predecessor, it isn't an utsuge and it is focused entirely on the vampire issue) Aete Mushisuru, Kimi to no Mirai Kono Sekai no Mukou de (short and sweet nakige) Otome ga Tsumugu Koi no Canvas (this and its fandisc... one of the year's kamige and one of the three best trap protagonist VNs ever) Witch's Garden Chuuning Lover Sinclient Re:Birth Colony Shukufuku no Kane no Oto wa, Sakurairo no Kaze to Tomo ni (I probably need to update my vote on this one, because it is better than most of the others I rated below an 8...) Tsuki ni Yorisou, Otome no Sahou (one of the 'three tops' of the trap protagonist sub-genre, it only falls behind Canvas because of production values and the fact that it isn't complete without the patch from the sequel) Tsujidou-san no Junai Road (this one I didn't like the first time I tried it, but it grew on me the second time, despite not liking the protagonist) Zero Infinity Devil of Maxwell (I rated this one harshly, mostly because I saw how it was trying to imitate Dies Irae, but it is an immensely enjoyable experience the first time around) Tsukumo no Kanade (has some problems, not the least of which the confusion of so many endings and the abominable h-scenes, but it is enjoyable otherwise) Tsuisou no Augment (hilarious and has great drama... makes me wonder why this company didn't capitalize on the success and start pumping out VNs like crazy) Naka no Hito Nado Nai! (made by the same people who did My Girlfriend is the President, it uses the same setting and has a similar atmosphere) Tokyo Babel (a kamige. This is slated for translation by Mangagamer and it is one of the few projects they've taken on that I approve of without reservation... and it is also non-ero) Sakura, Sakimashita (the first VN I did for my Fuwablog, you can check the earliest posts if you want my thoughts on it) Sei Monmusu Gakuen (if you can get past the fact that the heroines are monsters, this is an immensely fun VN) Rose Guns Days (for those who care what I think, I didn't really want to include this, because I hate Ryuukishi) Sousei Kitan Aerial (It is compared to Muv-luv Alternative, but it is a lot different thematically and actually has a protagonist who feels like a human being... albeit a somewhat hetare-ish one at times) TIny Dungeon Brave or Slave (conclusion of the four-VN main series, wraps up the main plotline) Furuiro Meikyuu Rondo (horror/mystery/supernatural VN) Owaru Sekai to Birthday (Horror/apocalypse type) 1/2 Summer (nakige) Dolphin Divers (AXL doing what it does best) Erect! 29. Hey, welcome to the forum! To answer your question, reading visual novels untranslated is possible even without knowing the language completely, with the use of text hookers and translation programs. Personally, I have been learning Japanese on my own for about 6 months, and I am capable of reading fairly normal moege titles with ease. That being said, a lot of VNs in the mystery, horror genre and also other VNs with plot that would naturally introdouce difficult words and phrases are difficult to read, even with these programs, and it would probably take years of learning to truly have a pleasant reading experience with such titles. Clephas has a fairly in depth thread on this, though I don't have the link for it at the moment. Let me edit the post once I find it. EDIT: Here it is

  39. Chapter 3 finished and uploaded. Also have the translation document uploaded now. If you wonder about a word, for example yuri or bentou, look it up in the document called "translations." (Though if you don't know what yuri means you are missing out on something amazing. )

  40. Recently played ebi-hime's Asphyxia. It was surprisingly good. The writing was flowery and fluid (a stark contrast to most things you'd find tl'ed or originally in english) and the vocab is rather wide. The handling of its subject matter (depression) was done really well. It never glorified Samantha's unhealthy obsession with Lillian, and how she handled things. It was portrayed to be exactly that -- unhealthy. But at the same time, it understood how difficult it is to cope with it. But despite the subject matter, it also knew how to be funny. The humor blended well into the characters' conversations. Speaking of which, the characters were very good too. Their beliefs were defined; often conflicting with each other, and it shows in their personality, and also their chemistry. The way Sam acted around Roberta is different from the way she acted around Lillian, and so on. If you're familiar with the figures as romantic poets you'll find that most of their comments -- from the more grounded ones to the more WTFLOL ones -- are based on reality. And it's very pleasing, and enjoyable. ebi-hime included a notes section which details their lives so even if you're unfamiliar with them, you could enjoy that small aspect of it. There is very little for me to complain about. Hope more people support it.

  42. So, I've been playing Clannad, following the walkthrough from Fuwanovel [link below], but, with the release of Sekai Project's version, a lot of - if not all - choices are different from the WT. Even if it have numbers following them [as 1 and 2], not all choices have it. It would be nice to someone to upload this WT to the new version of the game. Also, most of the instructions are confusing. I can't understand, for example, what I have to do at all at After Story, since the WT doesn't clarify it to me at all. In general, I'm asking to someone to review that walkthrough in order to make it 'perfect' to new readers of Clannad, as me This is the link: http://forums.fuwanovel.net/topic/684-clannad/
