I am trying to change what it means to be an OELVN: Thoughts?
Darklord Rooke and 5 others reacted to Black Sands Entertainment for a topic
Transforming what we expect from the OELVN market Whenever I talk to communities that play visual novels, there is always a kneejerk reaction when you say OELVN. To many, they are the bane of the visual novel world. All of the player base agrees that there were many well done and even groundbreaking OELVNs developed but for the most part, they are done poorly and use common tropes that can be redundant at times. The fact of the matter is that OELVNs tend to be indies, have much lower budgets then Japanese VNs, and do tend to stick to the script more than change things up. This is why I am writing this now. I am pioneering a movement to completely recreate what it means to be an OELVN. Many may say, “That is too ambitious for an indie” but I will not be stopped. Months ago I launched a kickstarter for my game but I didn’t invest enough capital to get quality art so it was ignored. This was entirely my fault. I then adapted and started making sure my original and very different idea was presented with all the bells and whistles needed to grab the attention of the player base. With that attention, I can begin to explain what I intend to do to change the game. OELVN to Western VN An OELVN is not much different from a Japanese VN. In fact, they are so similar that people that know of OELVNs tend to call them low budget or indies as a bad stigma. There are exceptions like Unwonted Studios and Winterwolves but for the most part, the stigma is very real. What is my solution to this? Make a Western VN. How can you compare or stigmatize something that has no equivalent? If it has no equivalent then you must judge it based on your own personal experience with it. There are many American developers out there that try to place stories in japan and use the common. The setting of my game is in the ancient middle east. It also has elements of the ancient alien theory and historical references of many different pantheons during the time of 3500 BCE. This has never been done before, not even in video gaming as a whole. But to understand why it Is different, we must look into individual changes that make the experience different from a normal VN. Art Style Since the story is different, more serious, and from a certain period, we chose to use art that looks digital but has a comic like styling to it. All armor, clothing, and backgrounds are based on alien technology and period architecture/writing. Music We tend to make most songs fit the location of the game but we do not allow that to stop us from adding a few Asian songs to capture the mood. The music is intense and matches the flow of the game. Flow The game has short chapters spanning no longer then 10 minutes each. There is a world map and different type of quest which require tactical decision making and exploration. There is very little internal monologue and the viewpoint is omniscient even though you only control the main character. It will feel like mini-episodes of a very big series where you develop characters and become attached to their own personal goals. Relationships Unlike in other games with a BxG relationship in the genre, we have incorporated a very different mechanic to how ours works. First, you as the main player will be competing for the love of the female lead. Your actions can cause her to love or hate you and the other character’s actions can do the same. You can very well FAIL to get the girl and even more, lose the girl to your rival. Additionally, all the characters in the game will react, listen, and follow you differently based on the reputation you acquire throughout the game. Your decisions will make them great allies or reasons for your death! Insanity The main character has psychological issues that he must conquer. Throughout the game you will come across spirits messing with your mind and as a result, you must either embrace these ideas or suppress them. By embracing them, you gain new powers that are extremely powerful BUT by giving away your autonomy, you also lose the ability to think rationally in situations where you have to use self-control. Questing Unlike other games which stick to one type of mini-game throughout the story, Black Sands offers many. There will be investigations, tracking missions, and random skill check progressions. Each one requires a completely different set of skills. Exploration The world lore of Black Sands is deep with mystery and discovery. While the player can choose to stick to the main path of the story, they will most likely engage in the side stories to discover the secrets of the rift. Every secret unlocks a journal entry and we have an in game encyclopedia that will explain all the lore. Historical References When you unlock lore entries, you get the real world context from which it was created including sources. This adds a level of education to a fantasy game that is never done. Main Character A common complaint about VNs as a whole is the main character being too needy and weak. In this game, the main character is a vicious fighter with an exceptional command over people. He suffers from Dementia but focuses himself using “knowledge of self” and meditation. You as the player will tell his story in your own personalized journal which will be sharable online. Victory Conditions In Black Sands, every turn cost time. Events happen based on the time and when you meet an obstacle for the first time, you get a progress bar on the top right. The more you learn about the obstacle, the more “confidence” you have you can deal with it. This helps you in the events that happen when you take on that challenge OR when that challenge decides to take on you. If you do not prepare well, you may be forced into a very bad situation but if you prepare for the coming enemy etc, you will succeed. Theme We incorporate ancient Kemetic-Kushite, Canaanite, Akkadian, Minoan, Greek, and Hindu mythology into the Black Sands universe while tying them all together with the ancient alien theory as the base. This will bring new fans to the genre as the ancient alien gaming world is an untapped market and the cultures of the middle east and black community would love to have heroes that look like them. Thus, we are moving forward, ever aggressive and ever vigilant. If you have any questions or critiques, please comment below.6 points -

Let me put a public disclaimer before I go in on this post. I do not respond in a hostile way to almost all critiques but this was not a critique, it was a character assassination on the level of Trumpism. It seems you read my entire script and all my references through your Byakugan eyes. I will shred your critique apart since it was a hostile attempt to sound educated while belittling me. "Akkadian is a language for ancient Mesopotamia people, not a culture." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akkadian_Empire The Akkadian Empire was the empire that predated the Sumerians. Next. "Kushite Religion is very limit, there is basically no research done on it." The reason its called Kemetic-Kushite culture is because they were one and the same. They worshipped the same gods, exchanged gods, and had the same cultural norms. "you will run into Canaan vs Bible reference battles, its best to understand why the two are not the same." I am using the book of enoch as my reference since historically it is based on both the biblical and canaanite religious bases. All historians agree on this. Additionally, who said this game was about the bible? Not I. "Hindu mythology is way different, it never has been connected with the bible while everything else has in some way shape or just plan added." "We incorporate ancient Kemetic-Kushite, Canaanite, Akkadian, Minoan, Greek, and Hindu mythology into the Black Sands universe while tying them all together with the ancient alien theory as the base. This will bring new fans to the genre as the ancient alien gaming world is an untapped market and the cultures of the middle east and black community would love to have heroes that look like them. " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_astronaut_hypothesis So unless you somehow missed the multiple references to the ancient alien theory or just have no clue what it is, you should not be saying how my research is off.I would not say Elves from the lord of the rings is not the same as "elves from the norse mythologies therefore tolkien is an idiot.:" He wasnt writing about ancient Norse mythology. He based his writings on it. I am done.5 points -
My 500th Post
greenshadow622 and one other reacted to VirginSmasher for a topic
So I made it to 500 posts. You may be thinking I've gotten to it through means like spamming...and you'd be right, but I just love these forums that much. I haven't dedicated this much time into a single site for a long time and all the people here are pretty cool folks. It's not like I care for you guys at all I'll get into the mentions later, but I'd like to tell my story first. Yes I know I'm being selfish. Plz don't crucify me Anyways, back to what I was getting to, I decided to join these forums on a whim thinking it'd be fun for a little while and then I'd leave, but these discussions I've had and the chat have made me stay here way longer than I'd ever thought I would. @Kaguya You've been a pretty cool guy to chat with, even though you and I have quite the contrasting opinions most of the time. At least we can agree chuunige is the best genre @Clephas You gave me some resources for learning Japanese and you showed me those lists of untranslated VNs to play, which inspired me to look further into VNDB for me. I thank you a lot for that. What would these forums do without your vast knowledge? @CeruleanGamer My onee sama and fellow spammer, you've been a pretty cool person to talk to in the chat and other places I won't name. @Dergonu You joined around the same time and have a higher post count than me, but you're a funny guy to talk to. @Kawasumi You're a fucked up son of a bitch and a cool guy to talk to. A lot of my reputation has come from you and you also like the same music as I. I hope to continue to share music between us. @Flutterz I've had some pretty cool discussions with you in the chat. You're a cool guy despite what you say about yourself. Keep being moe as hell @Canicheslayer We've had a few discussions in the forums and you and I have similar tastes in VNs. That's a good thing, we can be good friends now And of course the chat people I've met @greenshadow622 @Totodile @Nashetania @12kami @Ayana @gijimu who I've gotten along with in the chat. You've made the chat fun for me. Along with @Flutterz Thanks for making these forums such an enjoyable place for me and everybody else.2 points -

It's wonderful that you're aiming for the sky, and it's even more wonderful to see clear progress towards your goals, like the lovely artwork you've posted in other threads and the detailed background information in this thread. But I'd offer one small suggestion: you might temper your rhetoric just a little bit. Claiming that you're doing something big that "has never been done before" can alienate audiences, especially pedantic people (read: most of the internet). If they can dig up some example, however obscure, then you can find yourself in an argument that isn't interesting or useful, and that shifts the focus away from your work. I think you're clearly doing great work - whenever possible, let it speak for itself.2 points -

The fact that you are not even using a high school setting is already 70 points on a 100 point scale for me. Most of us here are tired of that cliched, over troped and overused nonsense and it's very refreshing to read VNs without using that boring setting. Good luck and looking forward to it and I hope you guys can be up there with Katawa Shoujo as one of the best OELVNs to ever be released.2 points -

I'm not going to vote in the poll, though I have my preferences. In general, in my experience, most of the best VNs either split off early or around halfway through the story. Great VNs that Split Early Haruka ni Aogi, Uruwashi no Dies Irae Otome ga Tsumugu, Koi no Canvas Evolimit Bullet Butlers Ayakashibito Tokyo Babel Devils Devel Concept Bradyon Veda Draculius Kyuuketsu Hime no Libra Komorebi no Nostalgica Tenshi no Hane wo Fumanaide Izuna Zanshinken Jingai Makyou Muramasa Do you get the picture? When you are trying to tell a grand story, there are two major ways to do it... one is to split halfway and have a strong true route after playing through the others, and the other is to have all paths split off relatively early (relatively speaking) in the game. Generally speaking, most VNs with multiple paths that are truly great follow one of these two ways of going at it. Exceptions to the rule are just that, exceptions. Generally speaking, VNs that split late in the game are either charage light on story or games with a good story and too many heroines where they chose to basically just tack on after-stories or a very short romantic side-trip for each of the heroines. Either way, you don't get a really good story out of a VN that splits off too late in most cases. Edit: To clarify, the act of splitting random-feeling heroine ends at the end or after the end of the story feels really, really forced. A prime example of this is 11eyes, where all the paths split off at the very end of the game. This led to 'endings' that felt pointless, pale, and generally weird.2 points

There is no such thing as a platform that can guarantee sales. Steam doesn't guarantee anything, success or failure. But it gives them a chance bigger than any other platform can give. It's as simple as that.2 points

Black Sands: Legends of Kemet [Mythology/Scifi] Major Update
Li-Fei reacted to Black Sands Entertainment for a topic
Genre:Adventure, Investigative, Management, and psychological Visual Novel Platforms:PC, Mac, Linux, PS4 Languages:English (Fully Voiced), English (Text) Visual Style: DreamWorks style graphics mixed with dark and mythological themes. Progress:~20% of the game completed. (20 hour game) Estimated release:~Summer 2017 “Whether friend or tyrant, I will become a King!" Welcome to the Rift, a dimensional tear located in Canaan where the ancient gods were created and where you must prove your worthiness to lead the world of men. You have allies and the training needed to fight, but nothing will prepare you for the wonders and horrors of the unstable plains in the Rift. Manage Respect, Relationships, and Mental will when making decisions. Assigning team members to missions best suited for them. Discovering weaknesses to epic enemies through investigations. Collecting real world lore and in game lore by discovering hidden items. Unlocking secrets of the past by collecting memory gems. Making timed decisions and avoiding damage in high intensity situations. Leveling up your characters to specialize in unique skills. Time In the game, everything will cost time to complete and characters may be away, unable to do a task available. Time is managed by the player and he has 6 months to prepare to face Nun. Special events will happen at certain times such as full moon cycles, changing of season, etc. This will give the player a level of management that makes them feel immersed. Leveling Each character has core stats which helps them succeed in feats. Completing certain missions and training will gain you very limited talent points to specialize your character in lore friendly ways. Respect You are a leader. You must earn the respect of your soldiers! Decisions you make and the success of those decisions will affect the confidence your allies have in you. If you fail a lot, they will lose confidence and go rogue during critical decisions. You may even lose command. A true Pharaoh never loses command… Kinship While how successful you are in decision making and your sense in the field affects the way they see you, it does not help one bit on how they think of you as a person. In order to get on their good side, you must appeal to their innate personalities. One cannot please everyone so make your choices wisely. It is worth noting that Kinship affects how allies act when not around you or when not commanded. Stability You are the strongest. Unfortunately, you are also the most flawed… You have an issue with Dementia and you must suppress these voices throughout your time in the Rift. The tradeoff is considerable though because when you were young, and you let the voices run wild, you could do things others could only dream of. In these dark days, will you allow your mind to slip in order to wield more power or will you avoid such pleasures and rely on knowledge of self? The rift has stood for thousands of years, since the day Nun arrived from the planet Nibiru. Located in the barren lands of Canaan, this void was created to keep the outside world uncontaminated while Nun worked on his creations. He spent centuries studying the humans and when he figured out this world, he created ancients similar to the life found on his home planet. They warred with each other inside the Rift until only 3 families remained. When they left the Rift, Nun used a stability gem to alter reality and hide the incomprehensible damage done. But now, thousands of years since the great sundering, Nun has created another race of beings to combat his creations from ions past. In order for them to prove themselves, they must survive the Rift, as it were during the time of the ancients. Stability is no more! Can the mortals survive the Trials of the Rift? There are many different types of quests in Black Sands. We will briefly go through some of them to better understand the gameplay mechanics involved in each. In Black Sands, time, health, and deployment all work against you as you stride to prepare yourself for the final battle with Nun. Scouting - designed to seek new quests exclusively. Minimal danger Investigation - A quest that requires discipline and perception. Player must decipher material and decide what is important and not. Proper investigation rewards secrets. Tracking - This is an extremely heavy skill check category that requires quick decision making and a little luck. These missions are available only once before they go back into the quest pool. Social - This is a quest where you develop relationships with the other characters and learn more about them. Instant Events - Automatically happen when certain criteria are met. May have nothing to do with prior tasks. Group Events - The entire group must participate. Nun will go over your notes and inspect your facility whenever this happens. Epic Events - Storyline Events that are either triggered by actions or chose by the player. These tend to have more decision making then other events. Exploration - A quest designed to explore unknown locations. These quests have no prior knowledge so player must use their wits to move forward. The farther you get, the better the rewards. These missions can be ended at any time but there is no guarantee you can return. This game is directly inspired by Dragon Age and Telltale. Their strong narratives and crucial game changing decisions inspired me to design a visual novel unlike any before it. Additional motivation was found in the way Hollywood depicts middle eastern and Saharan people. We do a lot of research and use annotations in game to teach the actual history behind the fantasy of our world. Future We will be converting all sprites to Live2d and making them look a bit more realistic and 20x more brutal. The goal is to make this like Conan while having the art leveling of pixar, dreamworks. How can I help? Follow us on facebook, Cosplay our characters, Share the hell out of this, and Pay homage to the gods by buying some of our merchandise. Don’t forget to sign up for the newsletter and remember, Nun sees all. We have these posters and more. You can support us while getting something tangible that will uplift both you and your families. Hello hello ladies and gentlemen of fuwanovel! Today I reached 500 posts! Yaay! Now I'm a pro right? ... Right? No...? Ok... I came here in september of 2015, I think it was about Yosuga no Sora or something like that. I don't really remember. But after making an account and posting a couple of times, I got hooked. I fell in love with the community pretty much instantly and started spamming posting frequently. Since then i've read tons of VNs, many of which you awesome, awesome people recommended me, and I've been a part of many fun discussions and hilarious roleplaying scenarios in the chat and in threads. I thought I'd take this opportunity to thank some of the people who have helped make these past 4 months totally freaking awesome. Before I start naming people, know this: I will probably forget a few names because I am an idiot. Please don't get offended if I forget your name. I love you all. <3 First off all, @Nosebleed Thank you so much for answering all my stupid, noob questions when I first joined. I was kind of awkward and didn't know much and I ended up asking you a bunch of stuff. But you replied to all of them quickly and politely and for that I salute you. You are awesome. @Kaguya Your top 50 VN list was one of the places I went for recommendations when I joined and it's provided me with a lot of good reads. Also, thanks for inviting me into the goofy and hilarious chat group. It's given me a lot of laughs. @Flutterz I still keep the moe picture you gave me when I joined in a special folder on my computer <3 You've taken my soul a couple of times when I summoned you but hey, no hard feelings. @Eclipsed Haven't had too many talks with you directly but reading your posts always makes me smile, (thats a compliment by the way. Not bullying you. Dont ban me ) @Tay I haven't had any direct encounters with you but thank you so much for keeping the site ... Well ... Alive. and to all the other moderators / staff members, thank you guys for keeping this site free of spammers like myself. Wait ... @Kawasumi You are the main reason I ended up playing Euphoria and started liking Clock up games. Thank you for scaring me for life Seriously though, you are awesome. You were pretty much one of the first people I started stalking on this forum after I joined, (just realized I never actually followed you. it was my intention to do so though! Forgive me! ) @CeruleanGamer I love you. Erhem, I mean... Marry me! ... ... This is going well. I've used the word awesome 100x so far in this thread, so I'm giving you the title of: epic! I'm kind of bad with words but thank you for making threads hilarious and educational. You taught me how to read! ... Kind of! (Do people really want to be mentioned by me? I feel like I suck at this.) @DarkZedge You've made me laugh countless times and you were my first kohai on the forum! (Yes you are my kohai. Deal with it.) Also a fellow tsundere lover, which makes you one of the cool kids! @Forgetful Frank You joined fairly recently and yet it feels like you have been here for months. You are a really cool guy and your motivation and determination is really impressive. Also, thank you x1000 for helping me out with my book. @VirginSmasher We joined almost at the same time and I feel like we are quite similar in a lot of ways. Lets start a "joined in the winter of 2015 club" together!!! @Kiriririri You taught me the beauty of moe and you also helped bring to the forum. As a reward, I give you +11 awesome points. Also, thanks for linking me adorable videos in the chat all the time. @Zebhra You were my first tomodachi!!! BEAR HUUUUUUG! @Jade Oh Jade. Jade, Jade, Jade, Jade. We joke around in the chat a lot and it's all fun and games. You are a great guy and thank you for blackmailing me. Wait ... I mean ... No, you know what! TRAP LOVER! BAKA! HENTAI! (Really though Jade, thanks for making my stay at fuwa 10x more fun ) @XReaper I haven't really talked too much with you but you are one of the awesome senpais on fuwa, and I wanted to thank you for service. *salutes you* @12kami You keep threathening me with ban hammers but they wont ever reach me! MUHAHAHA! You are the fuwanovel's chat guard dog and we all thank you for it. @Totodile I see you around the chat all the time, you are funny. Also you roleplayed pokemon with me once and for that I will love you forever! @Clephas You have taught me a lot of stuff and for that I thank you. You know more about VNs than God himself. You also ate some of my organs but hey, I'll forgive you for it. Thanks for making the chat group absolutely hilariious with insane roleplaying @Decay You are also one of those people on this forum that I really look up to. You make a lot of great points, your reviews are helpful and well formulated and, well your profile pic is awesome. @OriginalRen Haven't really talked much to you but I watch your videos from time to time and they are awesome. So thanks for that @SajkoWolfe I love you <3 You were the first to call me onii-sama and will now forever be known as my imouto. No is not an acceptable answer @Ryechu You are an awesome guy. ( Wow there, I said awesome again. Someone, go write down the awesome count in this thread ) Anyways, yeah, I haven't talked to you much but the little we have talked has been a blast and I wanted to thank you for your work at fuwareviews. @Valmore Onii-chan, how do I make a thank you thread? High five! @Velociraptor Thank you for teaching me about birds and science! @Nashetania Uhh.. BANZAAAAI! EDIT: BEEEEEAAAR HUUUUUUUUUUUG! @Shikomizue You changed your profile pic! I think it has been unchanged ever since I first joined. I don't like change. It's scary Finally, Hanana banana tomato! I can't manage to link your name because of the Japanese characters. The page wont recognize the Kana when I try to tag you. But! See you in the chat from time to time, always fun to talk to you there and in threads where you pop in. We've had our fun! And you havent stolen any of my waifus yet, so thats good. If I didn't mention you, feel free to slap me. I have a nagging feeling I've left out people. I'm really sorry, my ability to remember names is horrible.1 point

Couldn't think of a funny original title, sorry. I'm looking for any VN that has a little sister character that calls the protagonist "Nii-nii". Nothing more, nothing less. Doesn't matter if it's translated or not. Doesn't matter if they're blood related or not either (preference is on the former but I'll take anything at this point). Imouto characters are my favorite character archtype and I have a huge preference for this nickname, sadly it seems that this is also one of the rarest nicknames to use in a VN for whatever reason. It's not that I don't like "Onii-chan" or anything, but variety is nice too. My search on the interwebs has proved to be almost futile as I only found 3 games where this happens: https://vndb.org/v1281 https://vndb.org/v10926 https://vndb.org/v11624 (Note I only looked for games where it explicitly states in the description that the sister uses that pronoun) Any help or even tips on how to search for this kind of stuff on Google would be appreciated because I'm almost at a loss with that too. Bonus Miya for encouragement:1 point

On life - An introduction: 'Life' is a visual novel created by Rain Dog Studios, which revolves around a young man as he struggles to keep up with life. Does he do that which is expected of him, or follow his dreams? As he further wrestles with these questions, he begins to question the world around him, the people in it, and his own memories. What is his life? What has he done with it? These are questions we all face, but which is scarier, the lies we tell ourselves, or the truth? Origins: 'Life' is an adaption of a series of unreleased novels. The story has been rewritten into a script that adheres better to the visual novel medium. Currently there is a projected 40 plus hours of game play in the various routes. Choice: 'Life' is not a story, life is a world, one which I want to share with you. This world is my dream, one which brings restless nights, and spontaneous shivers. Let me see if I can help you here: 1. Steam, regardless of your pounding away at the keyboard, is the best-known online outlet for downloading video games along with extras specific to the site. Meaning online play with others, the weird rewards system, etc. It has the potential to deliver a bigger impact or chance of success than a typical indie developer can get on their own. Comparing Amazon to Steam is silly - you're comparing a convertible to an oak tree. Your list of other websites is nice, and there's nothing wrong with putting your game on them, either. Just don't expect to hear most people to know or care about that site as compared to knowing Steam. Know why there are people with the annoying habit of calling all mp3 players iPod or all soft drinks Coke? Brand name recognition. Heck, ever say "I need a Band-Aid" at all? Band-Aid is a brand name for what's really an adhesive medical strip. Power of brand name. Steam has the potential for your game to get out there better because it has that sort of brand power. 2. Steam is part of a capitalistic society at large. Meaning being on Steam is no guarantee for success for anyone. It's a potential tool or resource, but nothing in capitalism is guaranteed. Will developers fail even using Steam? Of course. They can also fail having it listed on Amazon or their own home page. But it does have potential for greater success than just hosting it on a makeshift website. 3. What you're basically trying to say is, because some developers did not do well on Steam, it must suck and everyone who likes Steam must be a brainwashed zombie. Problem is that there are so many other factors as to why a game fails anywhere - economics 101, really. Supply and demand, product quality, marketing, etc. Blaming Steam for a developers game not taking off is like blaming the President for high gas prices.1 point

I mean not gory, but the non-reasonable events. Whole second part of KnS1 is the tapestry of one ridiculous murder of school girls after another. And no one sees anyone - that's just great. In KnS2 most of people are from same village, so why not. Also in KnS1 is same - everyone related to everyone in same soap opera manner, so I assume it is trademark of the series - bollywood madness1 point -

Current plan: vote for Sayonara wo Oshiete as long as I can, because that is easily my most-desired VN translation. There are some others I want on this list too, but I'm worried that SayoOshi is old/niche enough that the chances of anyone else picking it up are slim.1 point -

Bunny Black 2 Early Impressions and Helpful Info
Hackrabbits reacted to CeruleanGamer for a topic
How to modify money using cheat engine. 1. Download cheat engine here: http://www.cheatengine.org/downloads.php 2. Make sure to configure your anti-virus or firewall not to block it or disable these temporarily. 3. Open it then open Bunny Black 2 4. Go to Cheat Engine and click the PC icon with the magnifying glass on it (it should say: Select a process to open). Select Bunny2 English, exe 5. Go to the game. See how much money you have. 6. Go back to Cheat Engine. Enter that value on the Value Box. Click "New Scan". A bunch of addresses should pop on the left. If your money is a big enough and complex of a number, it should return only 1-2 address results. 7. Buy or sell something in the game to change the value. See if any of the addresses change and reflect that new value as well. If there's a lot, type that new number in the value box and click "Next Scan". It should return 1 address only if done right. 8. Click the only address on the left to send it to the bottom. Click the value field for that address and modify it to whatever you want. 9. ??? 10. Profit.1 point -

Interesting thing is that Asairo is currently winning. I thought people would be more after best gameplay VN title. Considering it has pathetic level machine TL, and Asairo is full of kanji puns, not easy to translate.1 point

Steam is not special, its just another website
Rose reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
Yeah, the problem isn't with Steam, more that there's too much supply and not enough demand. Jeff Vogel spoke about this 5 years ago (the following is an abridged version): http://jeff-vogel.blogspot.ca/2014/05/the-indie-bubble-is-popping.html1 point -

master thesis - survey about playing visual novels
Templarseeker reacted to MissNordkorea for a topic
Buh, so many questions to answer. Yes, the thesis is about cultural transfer but the cultural thing will be mostly covered with analysis of the games + interviews with translation groups etc. In the end visual novels is for much of the western world a really new topic so most questions in the survey are to get some general player data. But you are totally right, the questions about the amount played is badly designed. I wanted to clearly get a view of the new/casual players and set the bar very low, forgetting that 151h+ is set really low. But I will note your feedback here to mention that in my thesis. To give you an idea about the thesis: What might surprise you is the fact that it's written for the history department. In the end you only need a professor that is cool with it. Game studies (kinda a broad topic as many fields like history, cultural studies, psychology, computer science, sociology etc. are applicable) are becoming more and more common so it's fine. My focus is more or less pure (historical) cultural transfer though as I can't do "game studies" on visual novels without knowing japanese and being able to play them in the original way. In the end you only need a usable focus and the right keywords and you can write about any topic in any class. So what am I researching? 1) The japanese culture has been "disrupted" from the west two times, 1853 and 1945, you see these bits in the japanese culture today too and in these games. 2) Visual novels originate from western adventure games (~1980s), how did they become typical japanese? 3) In light of 2) why are visual novels a japanese culture product? What does this include? (e.g. japanese games for japanese people, japanese development tools, special gaming culture (eroge) - also comiket etc.) 4) When parts of a countries culture appear in another country you can talk about a culture transfer. How does this happen (mainly fan translations, now also companies like JAST -> translation = culture transfer)?1 point -

done, although some questions were a bit tricky to answer, like the one that asks about how you get vns, you can only choose one answer... I do pirate vns and I also buy them from steam and from others sites too, why can't I make comments on that specific question? So yeah that answer is wrong no matter how I answer it, same thing goes for a few others....1 point -
Heya gunter, we meet again (I hope you remember me ) Anyways, as for your recommendations, maybe Chaos;Head? I don't know if it has the lingering feeling of sadness you mention of but it does have a twisted plot. (Haven't played the game myself)1 point

Thanks all for the continued feedback. We're certainly listening and adapting as best we can with what we have for this campaign. We've been pushing hard the last week or so and are on a solid track to getting this one funded. If anyone has any additional feedback, please keep it coming. We certainly love to hear from all of you...be it positive, constructive criticism, or even the not so constructive criticism (because sometimes you just need to vent, and that's totally cool with me). EDIT: Oh, and on a side note (not necessarily directly related to visual novels per se), we're getting ready to launch Rabi-Ribi tomorrow. If you dig metroidvania-style 2D platforming games and Touhou-style bullet-hell (bunny-hell in this case ) boss battles, this one might be right up your alley.1 point

On a related matter, if you would please take my hateful nature up with @Tay maybe he’ll see fit to finally change my username to "Darth Rooke", like I've always wanted. If you did this you'd have my gratitude. Not enough for me to actually be ‘fond’ of you, because like you said – I obviously hate you. But being ‘fond’ of people wouldn’t be appropriate for one of the Dark Side anyway.1 point -
