  2. Yohoho~ Its been so long since I last posted something on Fuwa (other than the occasional technical help which I rarely need...). I've decided to be more active on the forums (as active as I can, anyway) but so much has changed lol. During my absence, I didn't really stop reading VN but I guess i got too lazy to write about what I read. Anyway, this is my first VN review in a looooong time. I'll put the summaries and w/e else under the spoilers tag. I don't really know how to match the text with the background so I apologize in advance for any spoilers v.v And... here goes... *** When I first started playing Grisaia, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. All I knew was that there were five girls who had traumatizing pasts and Yuuji, the protagonist, helps heal them. When I read the summary on VNDB, I was honestly very excited because my mind started thinking up all sorts of mental trauma and how the protagonist would help them cope with it. But when I started playing I was somewhat disappointed but at the same time, what I did find exceeded my expectations. The way Grisaia started off was, put bluntly, boring. If that was my first VN, I’m sure I would have stopped reading after ten minutes. The whole first scene is about Yuuji getting caught by the cops because he’s ‘suspicious’ which was boring. The way it was all portrayed was kind of bland until Yuuji got to the sweat box. That’s where it got really good. Yuuji’s insight and narration blew me away so many times. I learned more words from Grisaia than I did from any other VN. When Yuuji finally made it to his new school and met all the residents in the dorm, I didn’t find them odd in the slightest. It kind of made me wonder what kind of problems they all had. Sachi’s and Yumiko’s problems seemed kind of obvious as I got more into the story, but the other three remained a mystery to me until I got on their routes. Yuuji’s school life was…different from other VN protagonist’s. It was lacking the usual vigor that is present in other VN (like LB, Clannad, KoiChoco). Yuuji was an unusual protagonist in my opinion since he went to great lengths to greet all his classmates. His first meeting with Yumiko was quite interesting. It was also a great chance for Yuuji to show off his abilities. The CG during that moment is one of my favourites. The common route was both good and bad. Most of it was both funny and interesting but all the times that it was neither of those, it was… boring. There were a lot of moments when I lost the will to read the VN and whenever that happened, I’d save my game and listen to the openings for the different Grisaia games and anime. I felt those openings gave me the most motivation to continue reading when I had none. So in a way, my main motivation for reading was because of the openings and the thought ‘It will get better soon.’ And it did get better. But went back down a while later. Grisaia was a really tough read in that respect. After having played Grisaia once, I would recommend playing through the routes in this order: Amane –> Sachi –> Michiru –> Makina –> Yumiko. I didn’t really play in that order but if I were to give this to a friend, that’s the order that I would recommend. Amane: The first route I went on was Amane’s, simply because I couldn’t really ignore her previous confessions and it seemed that Yuuji had grown quite fond of her, so I clicked the choice that would lead to her route. There were quite a lot of H-scenes in her route, most of them driven by Amane alone. I’d give Amane’s route an 8/10. Most of that rating is being carried by Kazuki. Aside from all the negative aspects of this route, it really is a good start to learning more about Yuuji and his family because in other routes, it becomes easier to catch the references he makes about them. Michiru: Michiru’s route was the second one I completed, simply because there were other routes I wanted to play, so I used them as motivation to complete Michiru. I didn’t really like her much from the start. She was funny and her comedy routine with Yuuji was hilarious but aside from that, I didn’t feel that she had any role in the story. I really like the random sound effects she makes at random times though. The rating I give this route is 7/10. Mainly because I thought the drama was way over the top. I also kind of hated Michiru’s other half since she talked back to Yuuji so much and was a bitch about the smallest of things. Michiru also cried a lot as well, which was alright for the most part. But what I disliked the most was the fact that Michiru was suicidal… way too much. Every other day, she would attempt to kill herself. In her childhood, in Mihama, hospital… etc. I lost interest a lot of times. Why? Because if someone’s lost the will to live then it’s probably not worth saving them. They’ll probably end up in the same spot again. But!! If you can rekindle their will to live, that is the best way to save someone. Yuuji did just that to help Michiru. Now the H scenes… they were pretty cute. Which is the reason why the rating is what it is. Also, this route has nothing to do with Yuuji’s past. Yumiko: Yumiko’s route was the third one I completed. And I have to say, it is my most favourite of the five. The way the story naturally flows in Yumiko’s favor makes this route almost seem like a true end. Yumiko wasn’t on good terms with her father to begin with, and I thought she was really interesting/cute/beautiful/etc. from the start, so I was really anticipating this route. I gave this route a 9/10. Best rating in the whole VN, mainly because of Yuuji’s profound narration about ‘time’ towards the end. The whole route was very touching and I really liked how their classmates from Mihama helped them out. They even stayed in touch after graduating!! In this route nothing particular is mentioned about Yuuji’s past like in Amane’s but it makes up for that by having lots of CGs with Yuuji’s face in them. Sachi: I wasn’t really looking forward to Sachi’s route since she didn’t really seem like my type. In the opening, I find her really cute but in the VN, not so much. Anyway, not much happened in Sachi’s route, but I wasn’t expecting any action scenes from her route to begin with. It was all like one long emotional rollercoaster. The route followed the typical pattern all the other routes followed. Honestly, I don’t really have much to say for this one. When a friend told me that Sachi knew Yuuji since childhood, I got pretty excited about it. But I guess I was expecting too much. I was under the impression that Sachi went there every day or something while it was just a misunderstanding on both Sachi’s and Yuuji’s ends. Sachi had gone missing for a while and eventually, Yuuji figured out where she might be, and he was right. Sachi was waiting for him at the playground, starving, and wet from rain. I found this scene quite touching since Yuuji realized that Sachi was his childhood friend. I gave this route a 9/10 despite the starting being quite slow. The rating is probably being carried by the ending, but I don’t really care. The bottom line is, I liked this route and loved the ending. The CG of Sachi when she’s laying on Amane’s bed has to be my favourite from the whole route. I didn’t really pay much attention to the H scenes in this route but the H has nothing to do with the main story anyway. The pattern that I noticed the route followed was that in the beginning, it is kind of bland and boring but then all of a sudden, it gets highly emotional and it feels a lot has been thrown at you all at once. This pattern was quite effective on me (lol). As for Yuuji, this route is a great way to learn what his childhood was like and is a fitting sequel to Amane’s past in terms of Yuuji and Kazuki being the main subject of the flashback. Makina: Makina… I haven’t played her route yet. I got to it but after they make out on the second or third day, I stopped playing. Since February was fast approaching, I decided to play KoiChoco since that seems to be a suitable VN for Valentines. I kinda missed the opportunity to play Xmas related VN, so I wasn’t gonna pass this one up! Anyway, I’ll probably play Makina after I finish KoiChoco and make a review for it. And I probably won’t make a review for Makina’s route.

  11. I won't put them in order because I haven't declared my VN of the Year yet... Kikan Bakumatsu Ibun Last Cavalier Natsuiro Recipe Koko Kara Natsu no Innocence Sakura no Uta (not from my personal tastes, and probably in ninth or tenth place) Sorcery Jokers Hana no No ni Saku Utakata no Silverio Vendetta (in seventh place) Sanoba Witch Love Rec Soreyori no Prologue (the fact that it could get me to rate it so highly despite it being typical Minori fare...) Edit: I was seriously surprised that there were not one but three chuuni or almost-chuunige on there... (Sorcery Jokers, Bansenjin, and Tokeijikake). However, I generally don't approve of naming partial games or chapters as part of the top ten...

If you have a problem with people and how they treat femininity, don't participate in the forums or keep it to yourself please. None of us judge you or start telling you to stop posting based on your fetishes or preferences, so respect a thread and do the same here or don't post in it. He asked a question, so calm down.

  18. I'm still puzzled how people consider the common route of Grisaia "boring", I mean I would much rather read the common route of Grisaia over entire mediocre VNs like Da Capo and Kono Oozora ni, Tsubasa o Hirogete. There are also many other highly rated VNs with incredibly boring 1st acts, such as the MuvLuv Trilogy and Rewrite. However, I still feel that the common route of Grisaia gets harped on much more.

  19. short answer = yes long answer short = yes super edit: can you study them in 2 hours (the whole kana hira/kata)? no, that's not possible, is not hard but the average time to study them is 1 week minimum. super edit*: I need to say this because maybe people don't realize when they write things saying "learning japanese is really easy it should take you 1 hour max, if it takes you more than that you are hitler" or "studying japanese is harder than a phd than im doing right now in theoretical physics" those comments which are obviously exaggerated don't do anything except discourage the person who wants to learn the language even if they don't intended to do so, that's what they do. Know this, learning a language takes a lot of time and perseverance. Don't feel bad if you don't learn it like the rest of the people, don't mesure or compare yourself with them, every person is different and it will take different times to learn the same things. If you have perseverance you will learn it, just don't give up!

    My attitude toward moege/charage

Since most of the people who read my blog at all are probably already aware of this, I'm not going to hide the fact that moege/charage aren't my favorite sector of the VN industry. I see VNs in general as a storytelling medium first and a visual art third or fourth, so the overfocus on visual elements that defines 'true moege' and the inevitable inconsistencies and storytelling incompetence in charage can be pretty irritating for me. That said, I have and do enjoy some charage/moege. Ones like Nekopara, that are cute and over relatively quickly, can actually be an enjoyable bit of relaxation, and the best charage - such as Lovesick Puppies or the various Alcot comedy-focused VNs - can be truly amusing to read. However, there are some things I can't stand about some charage... One of the most annoying aspects of charage is the tendency to go to a lot of trouble to build an interesting setting for the heroines or protagonist... and then either fail to utilize it as part of the characters' story, underuse it, or 'change their minds' because it is inconvenient for a particular heroine path. This is a complaint those of you who read my blog or have read my blog have probably heard before. To be blunt 'if you build it, at least use it well' is my attitude toward efforts at building a setting. Give the protagonist a tragic past and psychological scars? Then you should make his healing a part of the story of the heroine paths. Give the heroine a major issue/problem that is a fundamental part of her life and she can't resolve on her own? Please don't insult my intelligence by resolving it in ten seconds with no real drama whatsoever. This is a pet peeve of mine that drives me up the wall, and when I come across charage that actually manage to break past this kind of failure, I am generally happy to praise them up one side and down the other. An excess of random (and I do really mean random) h-scenes used in place of character development in a heroine path. Now, let me tell you that it is quite possible to utilize an h-scene as a part of character development. Alcot in particular favors this technique and it is the primary reason why I read all their h-scenes (actually, this habit annoys me, as I normally skip h-scenes). There is absolutely nothing wrong with using an h-scene to develop a character... in fact, VNs like Vermilion, Jingai Makyou, Uruwashi no, and Dies Irae actually have h-scenes that are used to further develop the characters. However, h-scenes that take the place of telling the characters' story are an occasional bad habit that pops up in about one third of all charage. Yes, eroge characters tend to be like randy monkeys when they cross the line into loverhood... but that isn't an excuse for ignoring further character development entirely. Ichaicha. Now, the concept of 'ichaicha' is so fundamental to Japanese romance in VNs that it is unavoidable even in many more serious games. I honestly don't have a problem with it... in reasonable amounts. However, there is a phase in about two-thirds of all moege/charage where there is literally nothing but this!!! If it were spaced out a bit with more story progression and/or character development (in the case of moege/charage dealing with the heroines' and/or the protagonist's personal issues) it really would never be a problem. Unfortunately, the 'endless dating phase' can often be interminably long... does anyone really want to suffer through eight dates (frequently to the same places and with no real change in the events involved) for each heroine? That said, charage do have a lot to offer. There are some seriously well-designed and written ones out there that actually tackle all the issues introduced as part of the story. Lovesick Puppies was one of those, and there are yet others who take the setting and run with it such as Suzukaze and Maikaze (a game and fandisc) by Whirlpool. I honestly have to applaud when a VN focused almost entirely on the characters manages to fully utilize a reasonably well-designed setting. Consistency isn't always necessary in a charage (in fact, it is frequently ignored), but a charage that actually manages to keep the individual routes consistent with the base setting is more attractive than one that doesn't, generally speaking. For all that charage are composed almost entirely of tropes and archetypes in most cases, I can forgive that if they manage to do so in a way that is pleasing and makes sense without being excessively trite. What does all of this come down to? A good game is a good game even if it is a charage or a moege, and a kusoge is a kusoge even if it is one of my beloved chuunige. I could go on to name a half-dozen chuunige that are so terrible I don't even want to recall them as a demonstration, but I'm sleepy, so I'm going to leave it at this.

  21. Hey gang, A good streaming buddy and salty friend of mine named solidbatman is pretty butt hurt today because his team lost Super Bowl V last night. He's so hurt, he decided to text me hate messages bullying me and saying how MN is a garbage state. Now normally I would feel pretty hurt about this, but I realize solidbatman is just venting his frustration out to his best friends; I am sure his girlfriend got the same treatment. As such, I wanted to make a thread where we can talk about all the awesome things he's done for this site. Personally, I know he loves Little Busters "get well soon" e-cards with Mio featured on them, so send some his way. If you can, provide a lot of pancake recipes via PM as well. He really likes those. Let's all reach out and cheer up a great buddy of mine. Thanks solidbatman for all your hard work!

  23. Revealing 5 more fetishes. Tribadism - Yuri is great and all but just kissing and fingering each other and doing the 69 is kinda boring. Put some more effort in there and clash those wet pussies hard! NSFW link: Body Swapping - After reading Change!: https://vndb.org/v14934, possibly the best body swapping visual novel out there, I actually found myself scavenger hunting for this specific genre. There's not a lot of them but I highly recommend Change! which I already mentioned, Real Imouto ga Iru Ooizumi-kun no Baai: https://vndb.org/v3746, and Maikuro: https://vndb.org/v2699. This genre is always interesting to me seeing a girl turned into a guy and now have to deal with her "cock". Although surprisingly I'm not really into futanaris. Snake/serpent-like girls/Lamias - Something about that tongue and slithering movement that is sexy about them. Although Amira which is a reverse Lamia from Monster Girl Quest is actually the cutest thing ever. Spats - Kazuko from Majikoi awakened my fetish for spats, to the point I like to wear them in real life too! I prefer Spats vs Bloomers as the ideal VN sportwear for girls. Keyhole Turtleneck Sweater - The greatest winterwear ever created... IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE!

  28. My untranslated backlog is getting filled with long, 50+ hour romance titles, and ... Well, that takes ages for me to finish and it gets old. And so... I´m looking for some new untranslated VNs that I can play in between these ^. It should fit a few of, or all of these critera: * Not longer than 30 hours, preferably medium / short. (2-10 hours is the best.) * Preferably Action with a fairly good plot. (Things like difficult to read thrillers or complicated sci-fi might be a little too hard for me at the moment.) ** Romance is fine, but I´d like it to be a secondary attribute and not the primary. The action / story should be the main focus. ** * In case "action, not too long, untranslated" gives about 29.2334.23344.23234 results, to narrow it down a little bit at least: (hopefully ..) * I´d like some VNs with actual combat / battle scenes, something super powered like. - (Alternatively, normal people skilled in martial arts, armed combat etc.) * Preferably something with some seriously badass characters. Can you help a poor scrub out of the moege / slice of life pit?

    VNDB Tips n' Tricks

A feature I love about VNDB, though not very big, is the random quote that appears at the bottom of most (if not all) pages of the site. By clicking on it you go to the entry of the VN the quote is from. Sometimes you see a quote you didn't remember from something you already read, or realize how weird it's out of context. I've spent hours reading those quotes on boring days

  30. They've recently incorporated this feature so I figured it'd be useful to share if you didn't catch it. You can use the "Release Filter" instead of, or in conjunction with, the "Visual novel filter" when browsing visual novels to more accurately look for translations. The visual novel filter will only give you visual novels that have a language listed (it could be complete, partial or TBA) but the release filter lets you specify if you want a completed translation or not, it also lets you specify if you want only English licensed VNs or translation patches.

I would like to bring to everyone's attention about the amazing feature present in vndb. Really I can't emphasise how important this feature is and also recommend Eclipsed to add it in the tricks. I am of course talking about the legendary random visual novel option present in vndb. Without it's existence truly vndb would have but a fraction of it's current greatness.

  32. I started Himawari as a fan-tl project in secret with GareJei, but I was planning to contact one of the localizers or the original developers with it from the start (figured having most of the game already tled would give us more bargaining power). We would've probably released it unofficially if we were turned down as the project was something I did mostly for practice and building up confidence before applying for a job at MG, or another localization company. It all kinda turned out even better than I had planned. xD

  39. it means "I" always but it depends on the situation basically, this is a silly example but you normally won't use "Ore" in front of a person with a high status, or you won't hear it say an old man using it (normally) because it is used in young males only, on the other hand you have onore which is essentially archaic now in japanese, but you see many vn where characters still use it. For example in augment the protagonist is really old and he uses "washi" which is used mostly for old people and the character at one point goes back in time and he is young again, so he uses "washi"...and nobody understands why, is not fitting for his age, is weird, there is a whole scene with his sister (a comedy scene) because of this, and then he stops using it.

    Fuwanovel Osu! Thread

Oh, I remember watching videos about that before, you've got the humped back mouses and the flat ones, you generally use your fingers to move the flat mice, and the humped one you use your palm and wrist more. And I don't think "I will never get better" exactly, it's just frustrating to see progress, then see negative progress the next day. One thing I can say, no matter how bad my aim is in a particular day, my streaming is less sporadic than it used to be. Even though I'm shit at it, I can at least notice I'm getting more consistent in that regard. Accuracy and Aim are completely random for me on days though :/

Hatsusaku also has an average of almost 8.5 with about 350 votes on VNDB for an untranslated VN. That's hardly a rating for a mere 'run of the mill moege' anymore. Sakura no Uta also isn't that much higher with just ~0.4 more and... 250 votes less.

  44. Have some good news for you Trails fans but Trails of Cold Steel 2 is expected by the end of 2016. It was in a question/answer thing on twitter a while back. I'm hoping trails of cold steel 1 eventually comes to PC I would love to play it but I also have a dead-ish ps3 at the moment and gave up consoles. I play an hour of TitS when I can but for the most part I play only an hour or two a week simply due to other games being released...like xcom 2 for example. I'm currently playing XCOM 2 and getting my ass handed to me repeatedly. My first character creations were 30 characters from the various muv-luv games. I just beat the tutorial and the first mission after that but I've misclicked quite a few times due to needing to get used to the new controls/mechanics. Hell I blew my squad up with a grenade trying to cancel throwing it. Definitely fun though. I've also started playing Fire Emblem Awakening for the third or fourth time in anticipation for Fire Emblem Fates (all the removed content is annoying as hell but I'm done with nintendo after the 3DS is replaced anyway so whatever). I'm looking forward to birthright, conquest, and invisible kingdom as each game is vastly different than the others from what I've heard. All the other games on my currently playing list are stalled however for a pretty long while most likely.
