  1. This so much. One of the most useful features of any pornographic material is having some form of cue that lets you know when the scene is about to finish so you can follow along without worrying. Nothing feels more bitter than finishing before the people on the screen do and then being forced to watch the content you missed out on.

  2. Hm, and here I was hoping of getting back to yuri with this. Oh well. I hope they clean their act by release, but we'll see I'll most likely play it either way, at some point, maybe. Possibly.

  3. Update: Game is now for sale for 10 USD: http://www.mvizlab.com A little over a year after their Kickstarter got funded, M-vizlab has announced that the Korean visual novel Lucy -The eternity she wished for- will be going live on Steam on February 26th. This game is a complete remake of the 2010 version with new graphics, more CGs, a new ending that was supposed to be in the original version and even full voice acting for Lucy's character in both Japanese and Korean. The creators had a thread on Fuwa while the Kickstarter was running, although they seem to have disappeard off the site since then. I'm making this thread to let people know this title exists because I've been hyped for it ever since I saw it back in 2015. My only concern is really with the translation quality, although since I don't know Korean I won't be able to tell if it's good or not, but what I really want to see is a narrative that flows nicely and has no grammar mistakes or typos. I listened to their preview which has Korean and Japanese voice acting clips. Although I have no clue what the fuck the Korean version said, the Japanese voice acting was not bad at all. What really struck me was how much deeper the Korean voice was, but maybe it was only for that particular scene. Ultimately I'm hoping I won't end up hating the story and that this really does end up feeling sort of like Planterian a bit. Anyone else hyped or was I the only one who remembered this? Will update the thread when there's a Steam page but here's the Greenlight page.

  4. So, I finally could give you my direct opinion about the demo Well, it's bad. Everyone told about translation matter, so I will speak about tech things. In brief - bad news. I doubt they would be fixable, unless Jast have source code for the game. As that annoying bug with music clipping happen in all original coded IG games. I do not know, if they have it working on their japanese windows, but on all other windows it got that. Every version have it, starting from Cartagra and goes on till last Flowers instance. I do not know if remedy exists. Jast most likely do not have source code for the game and so would not be able to fix that. Why I think that they do not have sources? Because they used tricks to have it formatted +- ok. Tricks means this (that's from decrypted and decompiled script straight from the demo): [charset num=25600 left=420 top=0] [charset num=25602 left=860 top=0] [effect type=0 time=500] Suoh [v file="suo0561"] Ah, oh... I.... [bgset] [effect type=0 time=500] She asks if I was trying to frame her... I look down as her suspicions dip me in shame. No way, this can't be. Hearing everyone in class whisper about it, I become too ashamed to even be there, and just stare forward, red-faced. Notice the huge amount of spaces. You know why they are here? Because japanese glyphs all have same width, so they needed strings to be same width for english release. I believe even the line break limit is same (it was always 44 bytes/symbols (or 22 glyphs - they are 2byte each) in all IG games... lets count? seems match!). That's also why it got cramped in backlog - there is different limit for symbols. Backlog could be actually patched without sources, if they have someone to hack.

  7. Speaking more generally though, am I the only one who gets the feeling that Peter just doesn't care anymore? It seems like he stopped caring after the Nitro+ project went mostly pear-shaped. It's bizarre how little information a now-casual person like me gets from their twitter accounts, as well. The @JastUSA twitter is active and constantly tweets pics with "funny" captions, but it sucks at relaying actual information big time. I missed the release date of Shiny Days altogether, and that much-maligned "My GF is the President" fandisc was released to so little fanfare... if it was any less prominent, I'd consider it deliberately obscured. With MG and Sekai, you know what happens and when, cause they hype their releases on twitter almost mercilessly. With JAST... unless it's a SUPER BIG DEAL like Steins;Gate, nobody really seems to care. And another thing. While being hush-hush about everything like JAST usually is is not exactly a bad or a good thing as long as the product is fine, it also doesn't inspire much confidence. I like knowing who works on a VN (well, tbh I just find Doddler's attempts to fix things after every major release hugely entertaining, but still) so I can stare sternly at their twitter userpic when things aren't to my satisfaction. Doesn't really work with Peter Payne's account, that. I'd love to say I'm surprised at Flowers' lack of... well, polish is the wrong word... all-around quality, but I'm not.

  8. Sanah touched on one aspect, I'll touch on another. The sex in Mass Effect is not explicit, compared to the sex in the majority of VNs which IS explicit. Most importantly though, Lawrence used the game 'Mass Effect' as an example to back up her point. Badly. See, she had asked a person backstage for an example of a video game with sex scenes and she got the reply - Mass Effect has lots and lots of pornography. Unfortunately for her, Mass Effect does NOT have lots and lots of pornography, in fact Mass Effect has zero pornography at all. When asked whether she played the game during the interview, she said 'no'. Obviously this was always going to result in much ridicule. Which was why the author suddenly found an influx of reviews of her book on Amazon. Reviews like this: "I know all about this book but have never fully read it. Why? Due to the overwhelming backlash, I have no choice but to agree with the 1 star ratings. The rumors are rampant that this book was poorly written and poorly researched. So without verifying the contents myself - I give it a 1 star. Good thing video games aren't judged in this manner - whew!!!" And this meant she had to deliver a public apology. So, why is sex in Mass Effect viewed so innocently? Because there was no EXPLICIT sex in Mass Effect. Cerulean Gamer brings up a point about the Witcher, which purportedly does include sex related images. BUT you have to remember that the Witcher has a reputation on the internet as being a sexist (some say misogynistic) game, because of how women are treated in it. Obviously this treatment of women is consistent with the world, it's not a nice place, but that doesn't stop the argument that the Witcher is sexist. Furthermore, the sex cards from the first Witcher were CENSORED in the American version of the game (along with some other stuff) and only available uncensored in the international version (of which I have.) Sex cards were not included in the second installment of the game, probably because of complaints. I have no experience with Grand Theft Auto, although if you recall the 'Hot Coffee mod' sparked a massive, MASSIVE furore. So I see no inconsistent treatment with regard to Western Games and VNs.

  10. Small tech rant once again. There is a vertical text in chapter 6, so I decided to put the files from the full version into this demo to see, if it was implemented... Results are quite obvious. So far I am under impression that no one ever edited the original engine exe, and if we compare it with IG trial it would be identical. Yep, confirmed, only thing they did is translated window title and error messages: <FLOWERS DEMO>, <Warning>,<Your display resolution is lower than recommended!>,<Game resolution will be reduced.>,<*May not work on all systems.>,<Failed to render window.>. Code is 100% identical to untouched japanese trial. All dll files - identical as well. So I really dunno what they ported and where.

  11. Well I better throw my hat into the devolution of this thread and give my brief views on religion. I am pretty anti-organized religion, but I am not anti-religious. I believe for every individual on the planet there is a religion. Be that a god, gods, spirits, reincarnation, the spaghetti monster, or simply your own observations that form the basis. The corruption of religion occurs when people try and staple a hierarchy on it. Religion should be a personal experience of self discovery on the meaning of life to each individual, you shouldn't be told the meaning of life by someone else. I always love how people try to blame a certain group for the world's problems and never actually realize the cause is what all these groups have in common. PEOPLE. People are the root of all evil and will taint any ideology, regardless of original intent, to something harmful and hateful to the human race as a whole.

  12. Character depth. I absolutely love when a game adds depth and draw distance to the character's sprites. Some games can do it better than others, but when the artist takes the time to draw "back-shot" sprites and make them smaller to show that the protagonist is in front of the group, it really says a lot. Newer VNs have started to implement this, and I respect that kind of dedication.

  15. VNs, that made their mark on history, huh? Well, first one that comes to mind is Katawa Shoujo, for giving everyone an easy introduction to the world of VNs. Next would probably be Tsukihime, for it's revolutionary storytelling in the early 2000's. Then lastly, probably Grisaia no Kajitsu for taking the much needed leap ahead for the localized VNs.

  16. @Rooke what's happening in most of these sentences is Japanese's lovely writing that enjoys employing repetitive and redundant verbs which, although in Japanese may carry slightly different nuances, in English they're simpy repetitive and unnecessary. The verb "let out" is VERY common in Japanese. It's used for anything ranging from saying a simple sentence to moaning during sex, but a lot of TLs just keep it as let out because it's easier than coming up with the appropriate English verb for that situation. What I gathered from these screenshots is that whoever translated this was WAY too literal because i can clearly see remainders of the typical Japanese sentence structure as well as several common Japanese expressions, resulting in that "unnatural" feel.

  18. Visual novels are often focused on romantic relationships--hooking the protagonist up with a girl. Routes are usually focused on getting the girl. The games are marketed (you can stop laughing now) with wide-eyed petite cartoon girls featured prominently. The games scream "masturbation aides for frustrated young men with an unusual taste for little girls". Compare this with games like Mass Effect. These are games about fighting bad guys and saving the world. The male protagonist gets the attention in the cover image. The romance is secondary, and indeed any story branching isn't generally heroine-focused. The purpose of such games is radically different. It's cool to play games about beating up bad guys. It's not cool to play dating sims with cartoon girl children that fawn all over you.

  19. The topic of sex in America is, quite frankly, fucking ridiculous and confusing as hell. Sex is a completely healthy and natural process of the human condition, why it has been demonized and treated like a taboo subject is beyond me. God only knows what the childrens will do if they learn about sex at an early age, so they might be more mentally prepared when they hit puberty. Because the inevitability of hiding the facts of sex will lead them to learn the majority of the subject matter from High/Middle school, and that will never go well. Although I do get why "gamers" don't really like visual novels, because VNs are not really games (for the most part). I always kinda viewed them as picture books for grownups, so I can understand why a community that is used to COD, Starcraft, or League of Legends would not be enamored with the genre.

  21. UPDATE: Here's a link to a compiled list of criticisms levied by MangaGamer translator Black Dragon Hunt, with commentary. JAST says they will try to fix all of the problems before release. So, today JAST released the Flowers demo on Steam and announced a tentative release date of March 20th. Great! I've been looking forward to this one for a while, so let's see how it is! Okay, so there are a lot of grammatical errors. A LOT of them. But a proofreading pass can help fix things up, right? Well... the whole thing reads really awkwardly. I would seriously doubt it if the translator was a native english speaker. It reads like a newbie fan TL instead of a proper official translation. Not even the most awkward of Sekai Project scripts read this poorly. It's not just poorly written, it's also inaccurately translated. Here's a boatload of chronicled mistranslations. Not only that, but the game has some technical issues. One that I kept running into was that any time I changed any option in the config menu, the music got all stuttery and I'd have to quit and reload the game. Sometimes interface buttons just randomly wouldn't work and had to be clicked multiple times. This game runs on the same engine as Kara no Shoujo 2, and MangaGamer had to port that to Unity so it would work properly, JAST did no such thing with this release, hence the issues. Also there are minor aesthetic issues, such how large and spaced out the text is, causing text to overflow into multiple boxes. Really, this whole release is a giant mess from head to toe. Every facet of it sucks. It's really disappointing since I was looking forward to it, but I'm also disappointed because I felt like JAST has been doing well recently on the translation quality front. I expected better from them, and instead we get... this. Flowers has suddenly turned into a huge bummer. How much do you think will get fixed in the next three and a half weeks?

    My VN Poem Collage

So, because I'm a massive weeb, I've made some poems about VNs as the months went by. Some were made with a special purpose in mind, some were just seedlings of my warped brain. Anyways, here are some I made. "Engines of Today" From Ourai no Gahkthun "Promise" from Hoshizora no Memoria "City of Distortions" from Sekien no Inganock "Broken Pieces" from Grisaia no Kajitsu & Meikyuu "Friendship" from Majikoi Short poem collection I'll add more poems, when I get some more done

  29. Not sure if serious? You tried years ago and you can't be bothered trying again? In less than 5 minutes you could be downloading this. You can't play a Steam backup without the Steam platform to boot it up from. It would take much longer to upload a backup of this VN than it would take you to create an account and download it. Anyway.. back on topic. This is a terrible job by JAST, like really bad. My expectations were much higher for translations from them. When did it all go so bad?

  35. I think most writers would learn grammar and making sense with their sentences first, and Flowers seems to be lacking on both accounts. xD

  36. It sucks to hear this. I was really looking forward to Flowers and then they release this disappointment as a demo. It kinda upsets me because I've been waiting for this for a while now. Hopefully they can fix the problems before the release date.

  37. Their sentences were full of redundancies It's one of the first things you learn as a writer, to stop using words that are weak. It was annoying me, I felt like I was ploughing through treacle xD. Yeah, I'm sensitive to prose so like I said if it doesn't improve much I'll be skipping the game. Shame, but c'est la vie. A couple of minor grammatical errors. Nothing REALLY major with the backlog. It isn't written nicely, but that's all about preference.

  42. Hmm. I thought it was an attempt to document acts of censorship, given the thread title, splash image, tone, etc. But if it's just an attempt to document that different versions available, then I stand corrected... but probably the melodrama needs to be toned down a bit, if that's it.
