I'm sure you are wondering what the hell I'm talking about with the title of this post, but the concept is pretty simple... You take a period of history or a series of famous/infamous events, turn all or most of the male personages into females, and then plop your main character into their midst, evolving a story from there. A few examples of this... The Koihime Musou, Sengoku Koihime series by Baseson Chuushingura Sengoku and Sangoku Hime series by Gesen Kikan Bakumatsu Ibun Last Cavalier Koihime Musou is the one most of you will probably be familiar with, and it is the basic model for most of the type. It is based in the era of the fall of the later Han dynasty in China, portrayed in the ancient story Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This is one of the two eras most favored by those making games, VNs, anime, and manga in this particular little niche, and it is also one of the easiest ones to use, as the story has made at least some headway in most of the countries of the world (it was translated into English first over a century ago) to one degree or another. In a way, Koihime Musou (the original) is a classic example of the genre, as the events portrayed generally only vaguely resemble the ones that existed in the original story, even when you set aside the issues of all the characters being female except the protagonist. Shin Koihime Musou, which follows each of the three factions in separate story arcs (rather than a single arc with Liu Bei's side unifying China like in the original) is generally better written and actually uses historical events in most of the paths, up to a point (where it inevitably diverges radically). The Sangoku Hime series is a strategy-VN series based in the same era as Koihime Musou, with the big difference that the protagonist is both fairly irrelevant to the story and the events are fairly close to the original material, up to a point (in fact, this is the biggest draw of the series, other than the surprisingly well-done story sequences in some of the cases). This series suffers from definite 'strategy fatigue', though... as fighting your way across China tends to rapidly become monotonous, with actual plot tending to only come up at the beginning and end of each prefecture's invasion, meaning you can go five or six hours without seeing anything in the way of story except sex scenes (of which there are generally a ridiculous number...). Chuushingura follows the story of the 47 Ronin, a famous story of Edo-era samurai that was the inspiration for most foreigners' impressions of the samurai caste. In this case, while the events in each 'arc' generally follow the basic outline of the original story, there are divergences in perspective based on where the protagonist chooses to go, and the final story diverges immensely from the original. This VN doesn't have any gameplay, and it was originally a doujin VN series that went commercial a few years ago in the form of a rewritten, partially redesigned omnibus VN. The Sengoku Hime series by Gesen is based in the Sengoku Jidai (Japan's Warring States period). In this one, you generally take on the role of a strategist (whose actual level of influence varies from path to path) who serves with one of the major clans of Japan as they set out to conquer the country. Generally speaking, the balance of story to gameplay in this series is better than in the Sangoku series by the same company, but the pacing is still fairly shitty due to the intervention of the gameplay. Depending on which faction you choose (generally if you choose the Tokugawa or Toyotomi) you can get a fairly accurate replay of past events, with a lot of differing details. However, if you pick certain factions (the Oda, the Date, the Ashikaga or the Shimazu) you tend to get stories that radically diverge from history even if you ignore the issues with female clan lords and the like. This is inevitable, considering the sheer chaos of that era (the concept of the 'honorable' samurai as foreigners like to see it portrayed is a product of the Edo era that followed after Tokugawa's unification of Japan), with the betrayals, massacres, religious rebellions, and the like... Koihime Sengoku (the new version of which I am playing right now) is also based in the same era, but, similar to the original Koihime Musou, diverges radically from history relatively early on. In particular, it should be noted that while certain famous events and relationships were deliberately reproduced for the pleasure of historical romantics (the Takedo-Uesugi rivalry, Oda Nobunaga's relationship with Mino's deceased leader, the Viper, etc), a lot more of it is different. This VN is significantly different from Koihime Musou in that it has a far darker, more violent atmosphere (lots of killing, and some of the heroines are... not good people, lol), and the protagonist is far more active as part of the story (in fact, he is the nephew of the protagonist from Shin Koihime Musou). Kikan Bakumatsu is based in the highly-romanticized period of the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate after Perry's 'black ships' opened Japan. It covers a lot of the political and ideological conflicts wracking Japan at the time fairly accurately, while focusing on the infamous Shinsengumi (who are often thought of as the last samurai). This period is also covered in the otomege series, Hakuoki, though the only common element between them beside that is the existence of a fantasy element. Depending on the path you choose in this one, you can radically alter history and the life and death of certain characters, but if you choose one of the Shinsengumi heroines, the basic path in life of the protagonist, Okita Soujirou, goes pretty much as history portrays (it is pretty sad). Generally speaking, due to the depth that can be added to the setting for these stories, they tend to be good more often than most... and that is generally why I tend to look forward to them, lol. However, if you aren't a history buff, some of it will just go over your head, and the language in a VN based in these eras will frequently be incomprehensible for the inexperienced. To be blunt, anyone who reads one of these should have a degree of pre-existing knowledge if they want to really enjoy them... otherwise, it isn't nearly as fun to see how the writers choose to twist things out of shape, hahaha.4 points

[DEMO] Omni Link - Space Visual Novel / Action RPG
Templarseeker and one other reacted to Roencia for a topic
I've been working on a visual novel where you can play a full space game adventure similar to "escape velocity nova" or star control 3, but enjoy all the best of a visual novel. Choices that matter, romance, hand drawn character and background art. Demo: *Includes the entire first chapter http://www.indiedb.com/games/omni-link-space-visual-novel-action-rpg/downloads/omni-link-demo-space-visual-novel-action-rpg The non-spoiler version of the story is this: You start the game as a man of little consequence. The first chapter: "A Hero Will Rise" defines exactly what you become. There is something called "The Virus" which has awakened near the edge of the galaxy. People are painfully discovering that this is a real threat. The Virus consumes everything it touches. You encounter an advanced warship, and an explosion binds you with an entity known as Ectype D-8. You quickly learn that there is more to this ship and A.I. that meets the eye. The artificial intelligence is so advanced, she is able to absorb energy from other ships and duplicate them. As well as quantum burst, administer atmospheric regeneration, quantum entanglement, and of course...Omni Link. You find out about these abilities as you play. Your choices in the game affect what happens to the story and gameplay in meaningful ways. You'll discover this in the demo. What ships you acquire, who you save from the Virus threat, and what relationships of love, hate, and friendship you form. Who do you trust? I need a small amount of funding to pay the art/music artists involved: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/994920323/omni-link-space-visual-novel-action-rpg *This gives you chance to be a part of the game early on, and even design some content. since the background is black, my character descriptions don't show up Real-time tactical combat Choices that affect gameplay and story in minor and large ways Huge two path end game split Hand drawn character and background art Epic emotional music *Let me know what you think of the demo and story.2 points -

Finished Code:Realize. That's gotta be one of the most satisfying True Routes I've ever read, it's not like it was LB! feelsy or Zero Escape mindblowy or anything, but everything just came together to create a fantastic story from start to finish. Lupin's da best, btw, hands down, ~~ Oh, and I guess a minireview, Story: 8/10: Just some stoic, amnesiac, poisonous girl hang'ang out with her five capable handsome dudes in 19th century Steam London. All of them have their own backgrounds and motives for ending up where they are and what starts off as a mutual alliance slowly becomes much more... Also throw in some secret organizations, conspiracy plots, and character-centric mysteries with a dash of kyaa! romance and you've got a pretty thrilling story on your plate. Characters: 9/10 Like I said, some stoic, amnesiac, poisonous girl and her five capable handsome dudes. Van Helsing the Vampire War Hero badass, Frankenstein the nice guy Alchemist, Impey the To-Love-Ru Lala's male counterpart, Saint-Germain the mysterious on-the-level-of-Half-Life G-man & Sephiroth clone, and Lupin the world's greatest gentlemen thief. You can't get a more colorful cast than that, and their bond and companionship was just so great to read throughout Art: 10/10 YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MANY DUDES i WOULD BANG- JK, BUT MAN YOU GOTTA ADMIT THAT'S SOME HAWT ART. Cardia herself is great too, especially with dat hat. I like dat hat. Music: 5/10 Sorry, once I notice music getting repetitive, it's all over! They're decent tracks that are appropriate for the setting, but they don't stand out and are limited. ~~ Overall: 8/10. Read it2 points

50 translated VNs you should read before you die
Pantsuhelm reacted to Kaguya for a topic
This list won't feature the VNs in order of "how good they are". Rating them would be way too much of a clusterfuck to me. The VNs are not in their respective order. Meaning number 1 is not the best, and so on. 1_CHAOS; HEAD 2_Cross Channel 3_G-Senjou no Maou 4_Fate/Stay Night 5_Forest This Visual Novel is the easiest visual novel translated to get a bad ending without using a walkthrough- which just adds to the fun of it. It makes a massive amount of references to common literature, which makes it even better. 6_Katahane It may seem like an ordinary moege- the atmosphere is light, the story is full of cuteness, which you can note by the character design and soundtrack. It gets really good in the middle, and you'll be dying to know what happens in the end. A game with multiple perspectives, it's definitely one of the most enjoyable Visual Novels I've ever read. 7 Majikoi 8_Little Busters! 9_Tsukihime "You shouldn't tell lies that you can't even fool yourself with" 10_Swan Song A post apocalyptic Visual Novel. 11_Symphonic Rain It may seem like your ordinary moege. Trust me, it's not. 12_Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo (and sequel) 13_Sekien no Inganock Steampunk. An atmosphere full of mysteries and references that will make your head blow up. 14_Steins; Gate A visual novel that deals extensively with time travel and it's consequences. 15_Utawarerumono 16_Fault: Milestone (1 & 2) 17_Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni 18_Kara no Shoujo 19_Umineko no Naku Koro ni 20_Planetarian 21_Ever 17 Another top 10. 22_Remember11 It lacks in the ending, but otherwise the story of this VN has enough to easily become one of my all-time favorites. 23_Zanmataisei Demonbane 24_Rewrite "Could it possibly be rewritten, this fate of hers?" Another one that enters the top 10. 25_Narcissu 26_Grisaia no Kajitsu 27_Saya no Uta Only if you enjoy dark and messed up settings. 28_Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni 29_Eien no Aselia 30_Rose Guns Days (1 & 2) There are small sections of gameplay on this one, but you can skip them by pressing the space bar, so this still qualifies. 31_Sengoku Rance I feel obliged to comment on this VN before suggesting it to anyone. It's an Alicesoft title, which speaks a lot for itself... If you don't know how it's going to be like, well.. Kind of tough to describe. Lots of sex, including comedy rape. Alicesoft tends to make the whole story a comedy until right near the end, where things actually do get serious. It's worth checking out, if you don't mind Rance's personality. 32_Phenomeno Want a short VN that can captivate you for their whole duration? Here is it. Visual novel adapted from the youth horror novel written by Hajime Ninomae and illustrated by yoshitoshi ABe. 33_Ef- A Fairy Tale of the Two 34_Dysfunctional Systems Another one great for those who want short Visual Novels. 35_Daibanchou Another Alicesoft title. While Rouga is not near Rance's level when it comes to pissing off people, alicesoft's style is something which often doesn't please people. 36_Yume Miru Kusuri The endings pack quite a punch. 37_Kikokugai- The Cyber Slayer 38_Eden 39_Hoshizora no Memoria 40_Katawa Shoujo Yep, it's somewhat overrated. Still, the fact that it is substantially easier for those who are starting to play visual novels to read should not be discarded, and overall, the story was good. 41_World End Economica 42_YU-NO 43_Shikkoku no Sharnoth Yep, there is a minigame on this one. If you download a save data you can skip the minigame, though. So it still qualifies. Another VN that enters my top 10. 44_Muv Luv Alternative The first Muv Luv didn't have enough to enter this list. You should still read it, though~ MLA is definitely awesome. 45_Dangan Ronpa 46_Comyu - Kuroi Ryuu to Yasashii Oukoku 47_Hanachirasu 48_Ayakashibito 49_I/O 50_Deardrops1 point -
My experience with Gameplay VNs
Darklord Rooke reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
These are just a few thoughts that I've had after experiencing various gameplay VNs over the years. First, understand that I see VNs as reading material (in the same vein as manga but with the addition of voice, some animation, and detailed narration) first and games second. Second, the type of gameplay most likely to be fused to a VN (strategy or turn-based rpg) are ones I played for well over a decade before I first encountered VNs, so I have at least some qualifications to evaluate them. First, for the gameplay... no matter how you express it, the average VN gameplay is several levels below the average console strategy game, srpg, or jrpg in terms of quality and design. Some of the best of the type - such as the Ikusa Megami series - just barely reach the same level as stuff released before the turn of the century as far as those two aspects go. Second, balance... in a VN hybrid, having a good balance between the story and gameplay is vital. In other words, the grinding needs to be minimalized and difficulty should be adjustable. VN hybrids without adjustable difficulty levels (with an easy version that really is easy) tend to result in a VN where the story is told in snippets between long stretches of grindy gameplay (Softhouse Chara's games tend to have this flaw in excess). Third is feature creep... a lot of hybrids have weird gameplay features that make the game confusing without really adding anything enjoyable to the game. An example of this is the recruitment system from the 'breeder' Venus Blood games. To be blunt, this game mechanic, while fitting in with the atmosphere in the story, made the games unnecessarily complicated, and not in a good way. Fourth... story pacing. A lot of hybrids have horrible pacing. In particular, many of them start out really well, grasping the reader/player with a dramatic prologue or first few chapters... then suddenly become a complete slog or grind in the mid-game. To be honest, the most egregious offender in this case are strategy-conquest VNs, where the story won't progress significantly until you've achieved an artificial goal, like conquest of a certain region. Generally speaking, most strategy-conquest VNs (such as Sengoku Rance or Madou Koukaku) start out really well, with an interesting beginning to the story... and suddenly become devoid of story for about thirty hours if you don't act in exactly the right way. The Sengoku Hime and Sangoku Hime series are classic examples of this. Both series tend to have first-rate beginnings, but the story gets put to the wayside pretty early in the game. As a result, you essentially get stuck playing a sub-par strategy game for ten to fifteen hours before you manage to restart the plot. This is tiring and boring, to say the least. My conclusion? Generally speaking, VN hybrids can be good, but that is only if the VN aspects don't become an adjunct for the third-rate gameplay that tends to be tacked onto them.1 point -
Gahkthun Review Discussion
Canicheslayer reacted to Nerathim for a topic
What bothers me with this review is that I get the impression the VN was judged based on a set of already existing criterias that obviously doesn't fit with every kind of fiction. It feels like the reviewer expected stuff that wasn't to be expected. What stands out the most in my opinion, and what sums up my thoughts quite well is this sentence : " It removes any trace of surprise from the story, as well as any excitement for what’s coming next, and it gets really boring really quickly", I wonder when the effect of surprise became an absolute requirement to write a good story. And there are many other claims like that one in the review. A very superficial read in my opinion as I can hardly see any good faith in it, not a single line is dedicated to the interpretation of the story and its themes or even to the questioning of the author's intent; when something doesn't seem right at first sight then it's flat out bad. It's a bit sad. What a Beautiful is a series that tend to be a lot more symbolic than explicit and I feel like the reviewer tried to weigh an elephant with a ruler instead of a weighing scale I might be a little harsh but I found the " I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to a normal reader" to be rather unpleasant.1 point -

Thoughts on the Cipher protagonist in VNs
Darklord Rooke reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
First, let me state what I mean by a 'cipher' protagonist. A protagonist of this type is basically a painted-on personality who serves solely to interpret the events for you, serving as your 'eyes' and 'ears'. A protagonist like this is most likely passive and/or reactive in relation to heroines outside of sex/romance and tends to 'go with the flow' most of the time. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. If the protagonist isn't really part of the story, making them into a cipher isn't a bad idea (Hotel. by Akatsuki Works Black's protagonist is of this type). However, a protagonist who is a central character really can't afford to be a cipher. It would not be an exaggeration to say that a cipher protagonist can ruin any VN story where he/she is a central character simply by being a passive/reactive 'passenger' rather than an active player in the events of the story. In my experience, the more passive the protagonist is, the more likely the VN in question is going to be boring. No matter how good the heroines in such a story are, it becomes impossible to engross yourself emotionally or intellectually because of the sense that the protagonist is out of place. This is the big problem with old-style moege and many charage... cuteness will only take you so far. Now, in some games I've played - non-VNs - a passive or 'silent' protagonist has worked... the Suikoden series and Growlanser 3 are examples of this type. In both cases, you were given a great deal of freedom to shape the protagonist's interactions with the world, whether they were simple dialog choices or the order in which you recruited characters. Unfortunately, visual novels, as a medium, are ultimately a reader's medium, and the reader is ultimately a passive participant. You might make choices to put you on a path, but that doesn't change that you can't really alter the flow of events in most cases. So, would you find being a passive participant behind a passive participant's eyes enjoyable?1 point -
Trump and the connection between democracy and tyranny
Darklord Rooke reacted to Valmore for a topic
This dates back to the Colonial period. The representatives from the smaller states were fearful that the larger states would end up controlling the Federal Government simply because they had more land area, and thus could eventually have more population. This really didn't take into account the idea that megalopolis-like cities with urban sprawl and densely-populated suburbs would spring up in different places. It was more based on, "New Jersey is locked in where it's at and can't expand, but Virginia can expand it's charter further west." To keep the smaller states on board, various parts of the Federal Government had compromises built in to them, including the Senate being even representation and the Electoral College system. Many people still like the idea of the Electoral College system for whatever reason. I'm for getting rid of it - the biggest joke of the 2000 election was the idea of "Every Vote Counts" - no they don't. If you vote for the losing candidate in your state, your vote doesn't count, as it doesn't help in your state or on a national level. It allows for cherry-picked campaigning for so-called "swing states" while ignoring states you know you've got no shot in - why go to California when you know it's going to pick the other guy? Spend your campaign money in Virginia where you might be able to swing the vote your way. Of course, I'm also for getting rid of the current primary system and mandating all 50 states and DC have their primaries on the same day. Pick a date in May, that should give all interested parties enough time to drag their asses around the country, campaigning and then everyone hits the polls at the same time. The problem here is you expected your civics class to inform you. You needed political science/American government courses. That's where you find all the juicy bullshit that goes into our government system. For the Democrats anyway. The Republicans are wishing right now they had adopted the Democrats' system of superdelegates, because maybe they could have used them to stop Trump. Then again, which vanilla or bonkers GOP club member would you get your supers behind? Jeb? Rubio? Carson? Zodiac Killer? Not that Hillary has needed her supers so far. She's still winning in the popular votes over Sanders anyway.1 point -

The airheaded, genius engineer who is the Michiru of the cast (the one that's always picked on for lulz) did not disappoint with his antics and dialogue, and he stayed true to himself to the very end when it mattered. Bravo. TL;DR this couple: ~~ Impey shoved Saint-Germain out of the way and is currently second best guy, as he also boasts a whopping three skinship CGs with Cardia like good ol' Frankenstein, but Frankenstein wins out for first because his achievements plotwise are greater. But hey, we can have a best couple award too, right? These two are just soooo D'awwww ~~ And now, finally, Mr. True Route Lupin is unlocked!@# HYPE TRAIN1 point

Trump and the connection between democracy and tyranny
rainsismyfav reacted to Valmore for a topic
The major problem in our government in America isn't too much democracy, it's that we use democracy against our better interests, because those in the game control the rules, and they play off the pervasive mindset that you *have* to vote for someone with a (D) or an (R) next to his or her name. George Washington, upon leaving office, had warned everyone about the dangers of political parties. Probably one of the wisest things he ever said - too bad no one listened. The two-party system has been indoctrinated into the collective mindset since just before 1800, and we collectively refuse to break out of the rut. This is also due in part because the campaign finance rules and other portions of campaigning are completely biased against third-party opponents. And mass media only helps fuel that by selecting only certain candidates for debates (which tend to be rubbish anyway). When presented with a decent third option, the party most likely to suffer from a loss of votes due to that candidate then goes on the attack with phrases like, "A vote for Valmore is a vote for SolidBatman" This message paid for and sponsored by OriginalRen for President, further discouraging potential third party votes by using scare tactics that voting for a third party candidate only enables the nemesis to win and you're throwing your vote away. Etc. Is it any wonder the US barely gets 50% voter turnout on an election year? Hell, look at the election now just with the primaries. Almost half the states in the nation won't even get a say in who the Republican candidate is because of this fucked up way we go state-by-state over months instead of having a single primary date for everyone. You can pretty much bank that statement with the Democrats, too, because the Bern is extinguished.1 point -
Good to know. I still prefer individual volumes but there's really no other option either way. I guess it's just because I'm not used to the omnibus format. Also yes, of course it would be worth it either way, Morinaga Milk makes god tier yuri stories. I am proud to say Girl Friends is the main reason I even got into manga as a medium, and ordering these 2 volumes is sorta symbolic. I'm hoping to buy Citrus in the future as well.1 point

Amane in Grisaia no kajitsu, Miyako in majikoi, Yuuna/Nanami in SonoHana and many more. I used to be completely disgusted by it myself but ... Suddenly one day I started enjoying it. I have been corrupted But yes, by some / many it is considered arousing. Also, for sadistic people it would be cute I guess, as the person is showing a side of themselves that is very private and embarrassing.1 point
