Astronomy
Funyarinpa and one other reacted to tymmur for a topic
Great topic. Sadly I missed it until now. It's more complex than that and distance does matter, though not regarding seasons. There is this physics law (naturally I forgot the name), which states that in orbit, when a planet has moves from A to B in orbit, the area A-B-Sun-A is proportional with the time it takes. (A-B is the curved one, not strait). This mean as the planet gets further away from the sun, the distance it can travel to reach the same area decreases and the planet slows down it's orbit. This is why summer is a week longer than winter because at summer it is further from the sun. That is for the northern hemisphere. It's reversed on the southern because south tilts away from the sun when north tilts towards it. What makes this complex is that the difference in closest and longest from the sun isn't constant. Sometimes the difference becomes much bigger, which will give earth a quick move near the sun and a long slow one away from the sun. Because the distance becomes so much greater than it is today, it actually does affect the global temperature. The term we generally use for this event is ice age. There are plenty of other interesting facts about our solar system. Mercury is the smallest planet and it looks like it used to be a big one and some major event took place and ripped off everything and only the core remain. Venus is a young planet and the surface cooled down to solidify recently in astronomical terms. I can't tell how many millions of years ago it was without looking it up, but it's like 100-150 million after multi cell life turned up on earth. Venus is also the hottest planet, having a near constant temperate of around 450 °C. It's so hot that snow there isn't water. It is some sort of metal. It's the only planet with a sunrise in west because for some odd reason it turns the wrong way around. It rotates slower around itself than around the sun, meaning a day is longer than a year. There is speculation that Venus is the aftermath of a collision between two planets, hence the odd movement/rotation and lots of leftover heat, which is only slowly escaping. Rings are quite common and half the planets have them, though only the ones on Saturn are clearly visible at a great distance. Mars has two moons and the inner moon is spiraling to it's own death. Within a few million years it will crash and crease a new ring and Mars will be the only rock planet in the solar system with rings. Windspeed picks up the further you get from the Sun. The 4 outer planets (the gas giants) have wind speed, which would destroy everything on Earth with the maximum recorded of 250 m/s on Neptune. Neptune also once had a storm so powerful that it made a hole in the planet's surface, like a vortex. Some of the storms on the gas giants are bigger than earth. Something kicked Uranus quite hard at some point. Despite being a big and heavy gas giant, something knocked it over and it is tilted 60°. It's also the only planet with a Greek name. The rest are from Roman mythology. It would seem that the same processes takes place on multiple planets/moons. Take for instance volcanoes. It's lava on earth. It comes up from underground as a liquid, cools and becomes solid on the surface. The surface slowly sinks inwards, heats up and becomes lava again. On one of the moons furthest out, the very same process takes place, only it's too cold for lava. Instead it sprays liquid methane, which behaves like lava does on earth. In between under different pressures and temperatures, different elements acts as source of volcanism. Speaking of volcanoes, the most volcanic active place in the solar system is IO, the inner moon of Jupiter. The intense gravity between the huge planet and the other 36? moons twists IO constantly and the stretch is 300 meters. This movement causes lots of friction, which heats it up and the surface has constant volcanic eruptions, often quite violently. Voyager took a picture of it, which was examined because it looked like another moon was hiding behind IO, but it turned out that lava was spraying out high above the surface and then it went to all sides and fell back, causing a shape, which made it look like a moon was present. Yeah astronomy is quite interesting. There are so many facts, which are far out and absolutely mindblowing.2 points -

that is quite demanding lol. I don't think its in my best interest to talk about the overall cost of the production prior to kickstarter. What I will say is every CG is 500 USD. Animation are 60-100 dollars extra. All game art is broke down into CG equivalency. I am one of the only people making a high budget OELVN. 9 team members. That's not really fair of you to claim that, since, as you said, you didn't read Fata Morgana and can't pinpoint anything concrete. I'm not saying that every single writing technique, as tedious for the reader as it can be, is justified as long as it's for the sake of the plot. In that particular case, I don't think it was used badly, at least it didn't feel that way at all (and I am rather sensible to pacing in general, given my short attention span). The story puts a big emphasis on the idea that people never act out of ill will (at least never totally). The frequent changes of perspective and the numerous flashbacks are necessary to the main thematic in order for it to be adressed effectively. Why? Because unlike the standard use of flashback in VNs, they're not here to reveal anything particularly novel in the grand scheme of things that could have been told in some other, more entertaining, way. They're mainly used in order to develop an emotional closeness between the character and the reader as you are put in the said character's shoes. Imo, the flashbacks did well at what they wanted to do : bringing out, in a very concrete way, the context that led a character to act in one particular way. (that is often already known to the reader, even if only partially). And to be honest, Fata Morgana revolves a LOT around many kinds of "flashback", a very conscious choice since they're part of, easily, 95% of the script if we had to cut it in parts. In that way it feels really consistent and coherent.2 points

Steam Summer Sale 2016

In case you haven't heard the news the Steam Summer Sale for 2016 is expected to begin June 23rd. The GoG Summer Sale is continuing for about 2 more days for anyone who hasn't looked at that. Can get some decent drm-free games over there for a decent enough price. My recommendations are the Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, Divinity Original Sin, Pillars of Eternity, Witcher 3, and Beyond Good and Evil just to mention a few. Remember during the sale to check around and see what other prices might be. Just because it's on the steam summer sale does not mean they will have the best deal. I recommend using isthereanydeal.com to check and compare prices with some of the other major distributors (many of which also sell steam keys).1 point -

Personally I think the problem is that people are being sucked into pitched battles between interest groups, with money funneled into one-sided advertising that ends up polarizing everyone involved. It's no longer a discussion. It's simply a war of ideas with combat lines established and soldiers recruited to do battle for each ideological "nation". Their job isn't to solve problems. Their job is to beat the other side senseless. And that's the current state of American politics in a nutshell.1 point

My interest in astronomy is actually what led me to switch majors from history to geology. I loved studying how Earth, and other planets formed in the solar system, and its just neat to picture and see what Earth looked like hundreds of millions of years ago to billions of years ago. Astronomy, though, has a lot of aspects I wasn't too keen on making a career out of, so I decided to get into geology, and study the physical history of the Earth. Of course, I'll likely end up working in a hydrology field in the end anyway1 point -

I was so sure you'd answer something along those lines. I didn't mean that it was the ONLY technique among many others, but given your apparent disdain for flashbacks I found wise to highlight that this particular technique was not used in an attempt to take the easy road but because it suited the story really well. The thing is that all these flashbacks are more akin to short stories than flashbacks. And labelling them as nothing more than lazy infodump is inappropriate since a great deal of care has been put into making them genuinely entertaining. They don't focus only on past events, they also take their time to introduce a historical context, an atmosphere (and we're also talking about music here, let's not forget that). These flashbacks (or short stories) happen in very differents periods of time that are cleanly separated. Saying that it always negatively affects the story couldn't be more wrong; and we have to thanks the VN medium for that as it allows a synergy between text, sound and visuals. When I'm reading you, I get the feeling that resorting to flashbacks is always a sign of some kind of writing failure that VNs readers will let slide because they're uneducated peasants who have never touched a real novel in their life (even if my bookshelf is at risk of collapse) and prefer to jack off to pretty ideas that remind them of their favorite shonen. You support that claim saying that it halts the forward progress of present events, but in Fata Morgana's case, present events aren't that important. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if someone got bored in the scenes happening between the flashbacks. But as you said, there is the possibilty that flashbacks can be done right and Fata Morgana is one example of that. Those long scenes of "nothingness" are everything except nothingness and even though developing emotional ties may be one of the reasons for the use of these flashbacks, they're also here to contribute to the setting as I previously said. I wouldn't have enjoyed Fata Morgana as much as I did without being immersed into different eras, pretty subjective you'd say but it has a great thing going for it and that's its originality. For instance, VNs and videogames (they both share the same kind of immersion, you may compare novels and visual novels when it comes to writing style but as mediums they don't have much in common when you are "experimenting" them) throwing you into a believable version of the industrial revolution are a pretty rare occurence nowadays. And that's the something you don't find mentioned in your extract of Conjueror's review, that I don't agree with anyway (opinions!). Because plot devices to play with the reader’s expectations and emotions are definitely present and I feel like that's his main complaint here. Otherwise, he brings out the same point as solidbatman : there are pacing issues near the end that people interpret in different ways. That's all there is to it. Fata Morgana is mainly loved for its uniqueness and even if people may have (justified) qualms with the execution it doesn't necessarily make the story a failure in that aspect. Even though it may be a problem that the execution didn't bother EVERYONE as it should be because the factors we use to define good writing precede even the universe and are far beyond the reach of mere mortals. Any story that can't boast Flaubert's level of prose should be ridiculed after all. Seriously, I understand the fact the we can make a distinction between "good" and "bad" writing but it should never become a criteria for people other than ourselves imo. Establishing rules that are to be followed if one wants to create a "work of art" is counterproductive, this kind of proselytism is the best way to kill innovation and creativity. It's like indirectly forcing an author to do something that pleases instead of something personal and I am against that, authors are free to agree to the "good writing" conventions if they want (and to the great pleasure of the majority of people who will read them) but making an absolutely objective analysis of any kind of writing is impossible. Negative criticism affects people far too much and I believe the only individual able to judge a work is the artist himself. Well, most people in research of writing advice want to do something that pleases anyway.1 point

Kanon: Mai and Sayuri Analysis
Silvz reacted to john 'mr. customer' smith for a topic

Before I start, I'd like to offer my own apologies in replying late too. In the meantime between your two posts (which I will reply to in the other thread in due time) I have written actually two analysis but just posted for Facebook. I wrote one for Nisekoi as at the time rumored to been ending soon and Code Geass which I had just finished. I haven't posted them here as it was more for my friends on Facebook to read but I plan to repost my Code Geass one here with some touch up. It was a great show btw and I wonder if you would read my analysis on that. The other reason for my delay has been that I been trying to read Air despite saying I was going to finish Moon. I figured because its summer that it would be an appropriate book to read but I've been making slow progress as its been WAY TOO HOT lately to want to have a laptop resting on me to read it. I will say though I really do love Misuzu, based from what little I had read, as she reminds me of a much more interesting Nayuki and on a visual level, I just love the long bangs she has like Mai did in Kanon. I plan to write a analysis once I finish it but that may be a long way off. Now going back to the subject of Kanon, I like how you refined my observations on Yuuichi to liken him to be a conductor for miracles. While I can approve of that, I feel that it's written in a way that still supportive of Ayu being source of miracles. I still find myself rejecting that notion on the basis because of the circumstances Ayu and Mai has with Yuuichi. For example, Ayu throughout much of Kanon is the one that meets and departs Yuuichi. You see this in the first flashback Yuuuichi has where she bumps into him crying and in the present time line where she's running away with the Taiyaki. This is the complete opposite when it comes to Mai as Yuuichi is the one that always visit's her and then leaves after their night is over. I find this important as its Ayu always involving herself in Yuuichi's life while with Mai, Yuuichi makes it his business to be by Mai's side. To clarify, Ayu's fate is one of being drawn to Yuuichi and its Yuuichi's fate to be involved with Mai. If there was to be a miracle for Ayu, I would think it has to be one where she comes to be with Yuuichi than having a power for herself. Furthermore, Ayu has a remarkable circumstance that is near exactly the same as Mai. The reason she even meets Yuuichi is because she's crying in grief over her mother's passing away and is roaming the town. If we were to take this event literally, Ayu failed, unlike Mai, to use her power to save her own mother's life. Looking at it another way, Ayu may not have a power of a miracle to save lives or change fate. Kanon may not give us specific details on miracles but I find it odd that Ayu isn't shown to be special like either Makoto or Mai through her own backstory. If there was a time to sow the seeds of her being unique, I think it would had been during this time. Continuing on, we know that Yuuichi, Before moving away for seven years, that he makes a promise with Ayu to play again. The scene following that in the flashback talks in detail how he purposely made an illusion of being able to give a gift to his first love and how happy she was in receiving it. He then goes on to say that he chose to reject reality and accept this story as to not damage his heart even more. What I find amazing, in his monologue to himself, is that Yuuichi here reminds me REMARKABLY similar to Mai's rejection of her powers. I find myself here, because of this, believing that maybe's Ayu's dream is Yuuichi's hope he had seal himself in his heart. This isn't any stretch of the imagination either as Mai was able to make a seal space also for her power and cherished place. I can see this easily being the case with Yuuichi too with Ayu. Talking of comparing Yuuichi to Mai, I can see similarities of Mai's dilemma in Ayu's route but with Yuuichi facing the problems Mai has. In this case, it's Yuuichi the one struck with a tragedy and rejecting a part of himself. It just comes to be that, for Yuuichi, there's someone else that convinces that part of himself to come to terms. This makes me believe even more that Ayu is really a normal girl and that for the other routes ending such as Nayuki and Shiori, the other major correlation is that YUUICHI himself is very much invested In those two people. For Nayuki happiness, it's for her sake that Akiko recovers from the accident and with Shiori, that she is able to overcome her illness so they can spend their lives together. Overall, I suppose my argument here is that Yuuichi is more than a conductor miracle but rather, a source of miracles himself. In Ayu's case, it would the make sense that her wish would come to be as Yuuichi also wants to be with Ayu. This would then also support the implication in the anime that Ayu's last wish is Yuuichi's wish too. Furthermore, it would explain why Ayu goes away In the other routes as Yuuichi heart goes to focus on a new love and is no longer bounded to Ayu. Ayu's then last wish then can be explained literally by Shiori's ending statement, of her route, that Ayu's last wish really was a gift for staying that long within the dream because of Yuuich's power keeping her there. In the end though, I might just be in the mindset of denying Ayu's power but I rather believe that it's because Yuuichi making his own miracles. The story makes Yuuichi to be a special person and all the developments relating to Ayu can be traced back to him. Where at first I was thinking it was because of Mai's power helping him, I think Yuuichi always had a power like Mai and IT COULD BE THE REASON that Mai's power mark him as someone capable of accepting her. In this case, Yuuichi is Mai's boy counterpart that uses his power to protect himself rather than self-destructive means. Regardless though, his potential for miracles could be the reason why he can accept Mai to begin with as he's unique like her. So now to bring things to conclusion, its Yuuichi potential for a miracle that Ayu is able to tap into one and make herself reconnect with him. I could be distracting myself though with analogies with Mai and that Ayu just has her own different miracle but, the events in the story always has Yuuichi playing some part in her miracle. Even the third wish, the one that is used to change a cruel fate, is based on the promise that he makes to her that's limited to what he's capable of. I would find it to be a major problem story wise if its because of a supposed Ayu's innate power that a wish is granted when it should be Yuuichi doing so. With that said, I find it easier to believe that Ayu was blessed with Yuuichi to be in her life and there lies the miracle that becomes the foundation for everything else that follows.1 point

Regarding what you said before this (about the conversation that Yuuichi had with Sayuri), I always saw that as cancelled out by the very ending, the CG. Which, as you know I associated with a clinging to her past, and despite trying, not being able to successfully overcome her traumas. But I have to say, you've convinced me. I think you are right, she is thinking about not only Kazuya in a positive manner, but truly has found him in her relationship with Mai and Yuuichi. Also, your habit of finding more fun sinking your teeth into the subtitles of a work than the actual process of reading I can very much relate with. I really liked the Kanon 2006 anime, and it was the first anime I watched that got me interested in the mediums of anime, manga, and VNs. In a very real way, I feel that the Kanon changed my direction in life. Through the interest in anime I got from Kanon, I later found an interest in broader (and more traditional) Japanese culture, and from there started learning the language. And the Kanon anime was really the starting point of all that. So because the Kanon 2006 anime held such a special place in my heart, I felt obligated to read the VN. So Kanon was my first VN, but too be honest with you... While I think the story of Kanon is very good, I think the anime presents it in a much more interesting and fun way. The VN really is kind of a bore a lot of the time. (And it was actually my second ever VN, Yume Miru Kusuri, that got me hooked on VNs during my teenage years). So I understand you when you said, "I learned to love it", lol. However, the issue of enjoying analyzing more than the actual reading, is something that I have a lot more for books. I don't enjoy the process of reading actual books so much, but I love thinking about their contents. But for a long time, VNs used to be the only written medium that I actually really enjoyed the process of absorbing. Admittedly, while VNs were the only written medium that I actually ever found fun, only a handful of VNs I found were good enough to achieve this. In fact I can list them for you now, (Swan Song, Symphonic Rain, Narcissu, Yume Miru Kursuri, Sayonara wo Oshiete). I've read a decent amount of VNs, but those were the only ones that I really had a special affinity for. Furthermore, I think my loss of enthusiasm for VNs really came when I started college. I like to enjoy VNs by reading them in practically one sitting, all at once. And once I started college, I no longer had time for that. And without the luxury to read a VN all at once anymore, I just gradually lost interest. Another reason I think I lost interest though is because around a year ago I put a ban on myself from reading translated titles. The purpose of this was to improve my literacy of Japanese through a semi-immersive environment. And while good study practice, it felt more like work than fun. During those times I probably spent way more time looking at my electronic dictionaries than the actual VN. Sayonara wo Oshiete was the only untld VN that I truly finished, and that was because the story was so fascinating that I eagerly worked through it with a dictionary to find out what happened next. As somebody who started out learning Japanese from a literary and perspective, but then later on took actual classes. I recommend at least taking a year of classes before tackling VNs (this advice isn't necessarily geared towards you, just me venting a bit, lol). A lot of people in the VN community promote the idea of "Study Japanese grammar, then read VNs with dictionary assistance". But doing it that method as I started out is painfully slow and honestly dull. By taking at least a year of classes first, you can then read manga, VNs, etc without having to constantly look up the most basic shit. You will still read super slow with a dictionary, but at least it will be more tolerable. Also, by taking classes, you can learn to actually speak the language too. Which is necessary if you actually want to communicate with Japanese people irl. Sorry for that little rant. But anyway yeah, having been a part of Fuwa for a while, and also having lurked on other VN sites. I think most VN fans find more fun in the actual reading than in the analyzing, which is why I think there exists relatively few analysis of VNs. And one thing I'm sure that you've learned from this, is that once you are done with writing the analysis, you have read and reread scenes in the VN so much that you become kind of sick of them. For all of the VNs I wrote analysis of, during the process of writing the piece, I would reread scenes over and over again to make sure I knew what I was taking about. Also to find to key quotes. And by the time I finished, I couldn't stand the VN for at least a week. But after a month, my love for the VN completely recharges and I appreciate that I went through the effort of writing my thoughts down. So I think it is totally worth it, but it is definitely a difficult process.1 point
