Can somebody EXPLAIN to me why is THIS BAD?! (GONE WRONG / GONE SEXUAL / NUMBER 6 WILL SHOCK YOU) ✔7 points
-
Here's as simple as I can make it. This is my original character, Minako-chan (do not steal): I put many hours of effort into it. I even signed it to make sure people know it's mine. I completely came up with it myself using my own brain. However, one day I'm walking across the street and I see a magazine that's running this new battle manga whose protagonist is this girl called Konami-chan It's clearly based off of my original character since the lines used for the body pose are the exact same, but the magazine never asked me for permission to use my work as a foundation. That makes me and Minako-chan very sad And that's why tracing is bad in a nutshell.6 points

You're good at being angry and pissing people off, which is fun in its own way, but if you added some weird assumptions about UFOs or out-there opinions like hating sex so much you would prefer for everyone to be born in artificial wombs, it would be more entertaining. Obviously this depends on what type of entertainer you want to be, but if you're funnier, the mods will like you more and you won't get banned as fast.6 points -

Forgetful Frank and 3 others reacted to Cuddlebeam for a topic
Hello! I'm Cuddlebeam and I strive to make amazing experiences and high quality via visual novels and dating sims! This is my game! (Steam Concepts page here! http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=645219968) You are the Harem Protagonist! This is going to be an informal, humorous, fanservicey, dating sim game that will play on the tropes of the Harem genre. Our story starts out with you being born into a new and fresh Harem Show. You're the main character, and oddly enough, you're aware of that. With the help of the Narrator - a semi-omnipresent voice that only you can hear (because protagonist privileges, bruh) you are now have the quest of conquering the hearts of several hot anime chicks. Let's just hope that you're good enough for the challenge. Handling so many sweethearts won't be easy!4 points -
An excerpt of the translations, taken just after Sumika bonked Takeru for groping her boobs while she was trying to wake him up: Some of these differences are minor, but have subtle differences in the meaning, such as "so hard" instead of "that hard." "That hard" implies a very specific level of being hit at he's uncomfortable with, while "so hard" implies a broader range, he's mostly not okay with being hit hard at all. With the second line, Amaterasu's version makes Sumika feel more passive and kind of whiny, while the revised translation makes her sound more assertive. "It's your fault" is what you say when shifting the blame, "It's your own fault" is something you say from a more detached position, when you don't think you had or deserved any of the blame in the first place. Then there's just a lot of minor, obvious improvements. "Squeeze" instead of "move" for instance. "Your hand moved" is not at all obvious in its actual meaning, and the moment you have to think about a straightforward joke is the moment it becomes way less funny. Overall, all of the minor accuracy improvements (such as "Why not" instead of "Why would you say that") makes the dialogue flow so much better. Like, every line actually feels like a response to the previous line in the Degica version, while the Amaterasu version felt like it was full of more non-sequiturs. It gives the dialogue a snappier back-and-forth dynamic to it that simply makes it funnier and more interesting to read. And the final few lines in this sequence make so much more sense in the Degica version. The simple "I'm sorry......" made it unclear exactly what he was apologizing for, and it felt like it came out of nowhere. "Look, I'm sorry alright?" feels like the kind of insincere apology that Takeru would give, while the nature of the apology makes it more apparent that he's apologizing for groping her. And so when he immediately takes it back, that take-back has more impact when the apology itself isn't so confusing. And the nature of the take-back is just so much better in the new version. "...yeah right" with lowercase Y and all, feels so weak that you actually have to wonder what it was for. It could even be mistaken for a retort to Sumika's last line saying that he can't act like an idiot forever, which isn't the case. Overall, the new script is so drastically better in almost every single line that I cannot even begin to fathom how anyone could prefer the old Amaterasu version. The old version was a confusing, boring mess, the new version feels snappy and even kinda funny, which is something I didn't think was possible for Muv Luv. Takeru comes off as being cockier, and this cocky attitude is pretty amusing in the new version. I was so insanely bored by Extra when I read it a few years ago, but this new version actually feels readable and mildly entertaining in its own way. The content is still pretty insipid, but perhaps the dialogue can actually inspire some occasional laughs now. But they did use the em dash improperly, so actually this is a garbage tier translation.4 points

And now Konami-chan has suddenly started burning (or exploded into gore, it's a bit hard to say) and the world has three quite different images to look at instead of one. That's why tracing is good in a nutshell. Conversely, if neither of those derivative drawings existed, I would be very sad indeed because I happen to like them (well, not really). The argument kinda cuts both ways. Pretty much boils down to the same as the issue of copyright (and even more so patents) in general. iamnoob: I'm aware of the differences, but the basic point stands. But let's make it even simpler. Let's say I spend hours coming up with a brilliant argument in favor/against [insert political/whatever topic]. Minutes later, someone picks it up and uses it to argue in favor of something I really dislike. Now what?2 points -

No, I'm not telling you THE ACTION is copyrighted, I'm telling you THAT IMAGE, with THOSE EXACT PIXELS, is copyrighted. You can draw somebody eating an ice cream anytime, you just can't draw somebody eating an ice cream EXACTLY the same way as somebody else drew somebody eating an ice cream. Fun fact for you: almost all geographical maps are different from each other in some minor way to avoid copyright infrigement.2 points -
Here @Nekolover I'll give you another case that happened in Japan so you can understand the mindset of artists over there. No Game No Life is quite unique because it's still being published. Usually you wouldn't get away with this. The manga Prism was canceled due to tracing. What happened was that the artist literally took actual photos and drew on top of them in order to make his illustrations, like so: When a publisher sees this, it's telling them that their staff is literally drawing over someone else's work without crediting it, and that could breach copyright laws, which spells bad business for the company. If you didn't know, drawings and photos are copyright protected, and if you trace over someone else's photo, that could mean a breach in said protection, which is why people don't do it. As far as the morality of it goes. If you're not asking for permission and/or not crediting the original source, it essentially equates to you saying you drew something you did not. For example, I could make a painting of a certain scenery, but I can't say I created that scenery myself, that would be decieving people, and that's why it's wrong. I don't know if you've ever been to college, but in college it is illegal to write someone else's words in your essays without crediting them. If you're found out doing so, the college will literally call the police on you and you will get kicked out of college, no joke. Similarly, if you check any book on any kind of study, there's ALWAYS a list of sources at the end, because people can't claim to have come up with everything just like that. Tracing is exactly the same thing: doing something yourself but using someone else's works as a foundation without any form of credit. That's why most people think it's wrong.2 points

The Witch and the Hundred Knight got meh reviews (personally felt the gameplay was boring, almost plays a bit like Bastion, but hey, just my opinion as someone who owns it), but it is from the Disgea guys, NIS. Revival Edition for PS4 I'm sure features plenty of improvements. Again, if you like Disgea type humor, you'll likely enjoy this. Grand Kingdom is newish I believe, don't know enough about it to make a call. Sorry. Star Ocean looks like more of Star Ocean: The Last Hope, which is horrific. I absolutely hated The Last Hope (while loving Star Ocean 3 so shrug). Of the three, I'd go Witch and the Hundred Knight. Its charming in a weird way, has a different battle system than most ARPGs, and just seems to stand out more than the rest. In the future, I'd appreciate it if you'd at least tag me if you're going to call me out. Makes life much easier for me.2 points -

Saku Saku: Love Blooms with the Cherry Blossoms/Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki
ihateuall34 reacted to Mr Poltroon for a topic
Saku Saku: Love Blooms with the Cherry Blossoms Fully Translated Summary Spring is the flowering season, the season of the cherry blossoms. It is the time for first meetings and partings, when the buds start sprouting. Yuma is a second-year student at Mihaya Academy who listens to love problems from girls at the school and gives them thoughtful advice. This has made him quite popular and loved, resulting in a 21,000 yen (taxes included) ‘love bounty’ placed on him. The girls came to him with problems ranging from jealousy to infidelity. Having heard about so many troubles related to love, Yuma lost any desire he had for it. One day, a mysterious girl appeared before him. She had never been in love, but she believed that it was a wonderful thing. She asked him if he would like to be in love, and that as a love fairy, she will help his love come true. A girl who cannot fall in love. A boy who has no interest in love. If they end up falling in love with each other, how will the world change? Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order There are 5 routes. Mio (childhood friend), Konami (blood-related sister), Yuri (Easily embarrassed Disciplinary committee chairman), Ann (Student Council Prez/Senpai) and Tina (Shinigami). Tina's route only unlocks after Ann's route. Walkthrough You probably won't even need this Walkthrough, since the choices are so straightforward. Nevertheless, here you have it. If you find you are missing certain choices, they may be choices tied to the adult content. If your version of the game does not include these, do not worry. Should you be missing any CGs, consider selecting both choices during the adult sections. Konami Route Mio Route Ann Route Yuri Route Tina Route How Flags Work and Other Useless Notes Attribution This walkthrough is based on info attained by playing the game over 20 times, trying pretty much all relevant combinations of choices. Summary stolen from Hau Omochikaeri (according to VNDB) Thanks to CalneCA for telling me how Tina's route works! [Current Tasks: -Make sure the choices remain accurate after official release. -Make sure there are no further choices during the H-Scenes]1 point -

Imagine if someone took one of my blog articles, changed a few words here and there, and published it as his own and sold it for a profit. That's basically tracing in a nutshell. It's plagiarism. It's taking someone else's work and claiming it as your own without proper acknowledgement of the original. Both writing and drawing are creative processes, not mechanical replication. Every word and every line is supposed to be your's. Simply mimicking others at a low level is not permitted, although similarities at a high level (arguments, tropes) are fine.1 point -
I blame the fact that this is a Japanese VN. We all know that they are still not quite at the point where they'll realise that a girl saying "girls are cute" doesn't necessarily make one homosexual. It did. And hit the MC square in the face.1 point

Legality only has its place in discussing potential consequences due to it being illegal, but then you're really arguing based on those results, not because it's legal or not. Laws may often have their origin in moral judgements, but they live a life of their own and whether something is legal or not should not reflect upon its morality. Also hi neko, you did good. Could use a bit more being out there though like Okami did, would be more entertaining than just unrelenting fury at everything w1 point

This. Disambiguating and adding precision is absolutely necessary when translating Japanese to English. I didn't tend to note issues like this in my coverage of the Seinarukana TL, but Decay is absolutely right that the new script in that scene reads much more fluidly. I don't know whether to praise the translator or the editor, but they did a fantastic job polishing it up. The earlier script sample demonstrates why I [used to] find reading moege in English such a chore. The dialogue is just so stilted and awkward.1 point

sanahtlig reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
I should also point out that in almost every line Decay posted, Degica makes things a touch more specific. Moved -> squeezed, attack brain -> memory loss, beyond control -> reflex. And of course, the boob line. Different things are implied in Japanese compared with English, and English is probably a lot more specific in general. What an author implies and what they don’t is incredibly important. You have to sort that out or your translation reads God damn unnaturally, like in the fan-TL above.1 point -

Author's imitate the way people talk. Young adult fiction imitates the way young adults speak without replicating the way young adults speak, because the results would be utterly tragic. And they definitely don't write like a young adult.1 point -

Bastion is amazing; don't hesitate, just get it. It's been long enough since I played it that it's hard to elaborate what I loved about it, but I did love it. I remember really distinctive narration, especially, and a unique setting. I don't know why I haven't played Transistor yet, but I only hear good things about it.1 point -
I get that I'm criticizing a really old game here, but that is one ugly-ass UI in general, for an ADV text box. The JP quotation marks are kinda the least of the problems. What is up with the text alignment. Is there any text alignment? Why is the name inline with the dialogue, in the same font and color, instead of off to the side, or above, or a different color, or, you know, basically any other way of differentiating them? Because they're not differentiated, now we're looking at the world's ugliest square brackets. Why are they so ugly. Fortunately, once I'm about 10 minutes into the game, I probably won't care anymore. The bigger concern is what Sana said, actually: I feel like this is one of those games where I'm going to wait for the 18+ version. But I'm in no hurry, so it's all good.1 point

Nice idea there. In fact I'd think of making the walkthrough for this game for a while, and I still didn't find enough time to make it yet. Looking forward to your walkthrough then, and to elaborate CerulenGamer opinion here, it's quite possible to balance the relation points between the heroines from choices only. For battle, you could actually made Nozomu all rounder (He strong enough) or had him team up with other than heroine (Thalia, Jatzeita, and Euphoria) if you worry about relation point balance. Other than that, I just said that if you keep the point balance for each heroine, you'll need extra effort to entering Katima route here.1 point -

I'm still wondering where the 18+ patch is. As for the translation, if you want to see someone obsessing over actual TL mistakes in an otherwise professional release, take a look at my coverage of TL mistakes in Seinarukana. These are the sorts of issues you should be paying attention to, not silly and inconsequential deviations from fan norms. I discuss what may be systematic problems in the way VNs are translated that people don't usually talk about: sometimes serious issues like "I love you!" becoming "You love her!", which would normally seem unfathomable.1 point
