  8. Off of this (and the fact that it seems we have very similar taste), I could highly recommend Kino's Journey. It's thought provoking, has Dystopianish settings, and social commentary. Its about this traveler who visits different cities, and has a rule not to stay in any one place longer than three days. Needless to say, each place that Kino visits is unique and interesting because each city showcases a philosophical theme in their respective cultures.

  9. I feel weeaboo is similar to the word for black people "nig***". If you call some other dude who loves anime a weeaboo when you love anime yourself. It's fine. It's more like sup brah! But if some dude who doesn't like anime/jp-stuff says it. It becomes derogatory.

  10. I think there are some people out there who cannot play other characters routes because of that feeling of "cheating" that you are describing, I've seen it a lot with katawa shoujo for example. Personally I can't play a vn and leave it half completed, it drives me insane knowing that I didnt' complete it 100% xD

  11. Actually, Trump is completely qualified. Of course, so am I. There's only three requirements to become President of the United States. Having a background in policy is absent. Be a natural born US Citizen, be 35 years old or older, live here for 14 years prior to running. That's it. Any other qualification is completely up to the voter to decide. Frank Stallone can become President if we wanted. Of course, one would think we would want people who supposedly know what they're doing. Unfortunately, those candidates also leave a pretty bad taste in people's mouths.

  17. Since I haven't made a thread in some time, why not be another "recommend me" thread? Basically I'm going on a trip with family so I rather not play anything that is 18+. This factor along with it being in English, are the only factors I 100% care about. If the game can be patched later for 18+ hell even better, but far from mandatory. The VN's that caught some interest from me would be Muv-Luv, Tokyo Babel, VA-11 Hall-A, Root Double, Danganronpa 2, Gahkthun. I've heard good things about all of these but I can't say I'm leaning towards one over the other. In all honesty I rather read through Muv-Luv 18+, Tokyo Babel may have too much action for me, Danganronpa 2 would be cool since I liked the first, and the others I really don't know much about. The recommendations aren't restricted to the VN's listed above by any means. Thanks yo

  18. Hi there, the name's Shikan Raider (or Shikan for short). I figured I should give a brief introduction/summary of myself. I was introduced to VN's by a friend of mine back in 2009, after having played a lot of RPG's the years beforehand. While I played one or two occasionally it wasn't until recently that I started to play more, which in the end led me into making this account. I figured that joining this community might help me broaden my horizon to find some of the hidden gems out there, as well as interacting with people that share the same interest. Since I mentioned RPG's earlier it wouldn't be exaggerating to say that I'm a huge fan of those. To name some of my favorite series: Endless Frontier, Tales of, Phantasy Star, Fire Emblem and Golden Sun. It shouldn't be a surprise that I also watched a decent amount of anime. I do favor the comedy genre, since I usually watch some after I get back from work, but I enjoy some other genres too. To name some of my favorites here as well: Seitokai no Ichizon, Ranma 1/2, Clannad (first season), Shimoneta, Maburaho, Mahoraba: Heartful Days and FMP Fumoffu. I think that's all that comes to my mind right now. If you still have some questions feel free to ask me. With that being said I hope that you can bear with me. I'm looking forward to enjoy my stay here. Thanks for reading. Cheers, Shikan

    Hi, newcomer here!

There is a storyline though all of them, meaning each contains something, which you understand better if you play them in the order they are released. Be aware that the early ones have had remakes, but AFAIK the newest remakes haven't been translated. This mean the first one is a bit buggy (a few insignificant graphical glitches) while the 3rd is seriously buggy. Sadly advising to just skip the 3rd is bad because the storyline makes that one quite important. Hopefully we will get translated remakes some day. I started with that one too. Sure you can start with that one and it works ok and you get a full storyline. However you can do stuff like "call for help" where you then have to pick which of two countries. Those two countries are locations of earlier Rance games and the people showing up from each speak in a way where you miss at least half of it if you don't know that Rance used to work together with all of them. In fact I think they are all heroines from previous Rance games, complete with H scenes and stuff. It's almost like every single sentence is a reference to events in the past.

  21. You could try Kuuchuu Buranko, it's a bit of a weird one but deals a fair amount with psychological issues which could be your cup of tea? Dunno, I enjoyed it. The mood isn't particularly serious though so maybe it's not what you're looking for. How about Gankutsuou? It's based on The Count of Monte Cristo and personally, was a bit too confusing for me to enjoy, but fits your criteria decently. Another one would be Gosick. This one, again, I wasn't a fan of, but it was entertaining enough and even though I haven't watched Baccano I think it might have a similar feel to it. Off topic, but, your signature made me laugh way more than it should have.

  27. • kino no tabi (as already mentioned above) • shin sekai yori • trigun • blue gender • wolfs rain • akira • city hunter series (incl. angel heart) other than those, you might want to watch out for the upcoming "genocidal organ", which should start airing sometimes later this year and/or evangelion´s 4th movie, now that anno hideaki finally (2years late :P) begun his work on said title honorable mentions, you may also find interesting: • tsubasa chronicles (+related media) • empire of corpses • cowboy beebop

  28. Well that's because the webcomic is still ongoing, so there really wasn't much they could do besides attempt to make it feel like a conclusion. If they had continued it after that point, there really wasn't any good point to end it on I feel like. I suggest you check out the webcomic if you're that upset

  29. This is not to say there's no variety or that there aren't good stories, it's just that in terms of writing quality, Japanese VNs really read mostly the same, and they mostly sound like typical game dialogue, with the exceptions being those games nobody will ever translate like Albatross. They're created with the audience in mind and their goal is not to be the next Nabokov book but to attract readers that want their tropes on a silver platter. This isn't a problem with VNs specifically either. Manga and light novels suffer from the same thing. Manga has the excuse of the limitations imposed by the format of course, but LNs don't, yet most of them really feel like they're written by people who just want an outlet to put their tropes on rather than somebody who wants to write a proper novel. Rule of thumb: if you want proper Japanese literature, do not look at otaku related stuff. Of course there's a few exceptions; Nisioisin, for example, is a well renowned LN writer and his writing actually stands out from the rest, hence why so many people praise Bakemonogatari. After owning one of his books myself, I finally understood the hype as well, it's like night and day compared to any other LN you might find. But in general, it's just tropes after tropes after tropes with not much effort put into the writing itself.

  30. The thing is most Japanese VNs are written like rpg dialogues with very simple and repetitive sentence structures. It really doesn't take that much to write your average Japanese eroge, and certainly doesn't take more than your typical native level grasp on the language. It's no surprise that most Japanese VN writers are simply freelancers hired for a specific project and not full time authors, because most of them just stick to guidelines to create some kind of story that'll touch otaku's dicks more than anything. So really, if you wanted to make a VN in Japan, you could easily do that and just hire an artist to do the CGs for you, that's how most of them do it. Of course that doesn't mean your story will sell a lot, but the point is that you really don't need to be an experienced writer to make your run of the mill Japanese VN, because most of them read the exact same.

  36. I agree with this, and I think this goes without saying. I'm just making the argument that it can be done, and I think that if somebody were ambitious enough to learn Japanese well enough to write well in it, I think it could be profitable for them. (Actually, a part of me is interested in possibly doing this myself one day. Obviously I still have a while to go though. But who knows, maybe one day ;p)

  39. just repeating the guys above, but why to sell something in English that already exists in japanese to a japanese-speaking country? You may argue some people who live in Japan aren't japanese and all, but still, that would be such a small percentage that it would be stupidity to a company to consider it
    1 point
  40. err.... why the fuck would an English company open a store in Japan where 80% doesn't speak English that well... and Frontwing already released some of there titles alone... and VisualArts is also localizing some games. it is just a matter of time before we get more VNs and tbh I would prefer that MangaGamer, JAST and SP where the only company that localize VNs cause they make sure it's in correct and readable English. Also guess what time it is!?

  42. Sharin is pretty nice. But I think I prefer Eustia's kind of linear story. Straight forward with just 1 h-scene pushed on you. With more branches I like tokyo babel, that branches off quite early in the story.
    1 point
  43. It's certainly an interesting way of doing it, and I wouldn't mind having more VNs do the same, but at the same time the whole "different stories in different routes" thing is part of what makes VNs stand out IMO.
