So i just came across that nice & intriguing looking little something, which i never heard of before (same with the circle in question) and that is currently put on SteamGreenlight by CultureSelect. not much to say from my side, other than its visuals make my heart go all fuzzy and the writing/translation also seems quite befitting the story itself, e.g.: "unless you want that hood of yours blown straight to El Roso, you best move along". aye! (bit curious if @Ryechu had some sort of involvement there). eitherway stuff needs your very support in case high noon-ish waifus, social issues & lots of clang boom pow (literally) are what you´ve been always longing for. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=728993422 "Dead End Junction was written and directed by Hidume, the sole member of 773, creator of the acclaimed Cherry Tree High series and fan of old Westerns like The Magnificent Seven and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Their sharp sense of humor is on full display here, though they do an excellent job proving they can write a serious story with this title as well. To be localized by the start-up publisher Culture Select, Dead End Junction is a visual novel that captures the aura of the Wild West while addressing social issues that are relevant to contemporary society." edit: personal hype train just went off at maxx speed after re-reading the passage above, simply because the one who decided on creating fiction, possibly influenced by "good, bad & ugly´s" grandiosity, is more than worth my given support.5 points

Finished Unlimited Blade Works. It's a solid 9/10, pretty thrilling late game shenanigans and emotional character confrontations. This was the type of story I was expecting when I was going through Fate route but nope get Saberblocked by Shirou Tohsaka Rin is now the best tsuntsun of all time for me; Archer's (still) probably my favorite character from this VN, great revelations about him; and Lancer wins the "Fastest time to get my opinion on a male character to go from 'meh' to 'epic hard-on'" award. Misc. SPOILS I have no idea what the hell Heaven's Feel will have in store, but I'm assuming Illya will have prominence in it?3 points -
Meaningful Japanese Words
kingdomcome and one other reacted to Arsudar for a topic
These are some interesting Japanese words that I found on the Internet and I tried to translate them according to my understanding. Pretty interesting words though. 1 - Itadakimasu This is a pretty well-known Japanese word, even for people who haven't learned Japanese before. In simple way, we can understand "Itadakimasu" as "Thanks for the meal" or "Let's eat". However, if we dig in deeper, we can say "Itadakimasu" is somewhat relate to Buddism. The action of clasping 2 hands together with slight head bow can be seen as an act of prayer. In Buddism, all lives are considered to be precious, when you do "Itadakimasu", you have to finish all your meal as a way to express gratitude since the "food" gave it life to you. 2 - Shinrin-Yoku This one is a really cool Japanese word as it refers to the action of going into the forest to relax and enjoy life. In English, "Shinrin-yoku" can be translated to "Forest-bathing" (pretty interesting translation, too). On the contrary to its "fancy name", this activity is not hard to do, simply go into the forest, walk slowly and breathe, submerge ourselves into the nature. As it is proved, "Shinrin-yoku" is a excellent healing way, it can help alot in improving human's health such as reducing blood pressure, reducing stress, improving mood, improving sleep and body energy, .etc... In term of spiritual idea, it is like becoming one with the nature, relax and put all worries behind for better present, and future. If you are interested in this activity, you should check out this site for more information. 3 - Ikigai Are you struggling to find your dream? Are you struggling to find your purpose in life? If that is the case then this meaningful Japanese word will give you a big help. In Japanese kanji, "Ikigai" means "reason for being", or we can say "reason for living". The more we think about it, the more meaningful things we can see around this word. If we divide this word, we will have "iki" which refers to "life" and "kai" which basically means "realizing what we expect or hope for". We can also translate "Ikagai" as "the thing that makes you wake up everyday", so let ask ourselves: "What give us motivation to get up in the morning?". 4 - Yugen Brace yourself because we are going deep into meaning of one part of Buddism in general and Japanese culture in particular - Yugen. "Yugen" are explained to be awareness of the Universe which triggers the emotion and feeling about the world. Sounds complicated isn' it? To make it easier to understand, first we will have to understand one concept from Buddism which is "nothingness". "Nothingness" does not mean "non-existance", but rather means "everything will constantly changing, some will evolve, some will dissolve, that is the way of the world". In Japanese concept of aesthetic, this means appreciating the constant changes of the world, instead of clinging into the clinging into the forever existance of things, such as the sunset scenery, or gazing at the boat which are gradually disappearing. If we apply this meaning into daily life, we will see that everything around us will constantly change, for this reason, we should focus on our present, instead of clinging into the glory or the sorrow of the past, as everything will disappear, and only present remains. 5 - Hikikomori "Hikikomori" is actually not a popular Japanese word around the world until recent years. However, in truth, it refers to a real-life situation, or people who locks themselves in their own room, seperating themselves from society. This situation is seen as a extreme state of isolation, the bad part is that it happens more and more nowadays. This might not be the worst in other countries, but in Japan, seems the percentage of "hikikomori" increases so much that Japanese Ministry of Health has to give out a definition and 6 different criterias for "hikikomori". Interesting Japanese word, but quite terrifying at the same time indeed. So, should we ask ourselves "am I an hikikomori?".2 points -

Higurashi and House in Fata Morgana maybe? Also you could try Cross Channel for physiological and Kikokugai (Pick remake version if you want voice) if you want to see VN from anti villain viewpoint (Also same writer as Saya no Uta). Hope it'll help. PS - Is Maou from G-Senjou really popular for avatar choice here? Last time there's another new user (Dfbreezy) using Maou avatar for a while and also old user (Kingdomcome) using Maou as current avatar here. Just saying.2 points -
There are a couple of factors that need to be taken into consideration: As already mentioned above, HD cg assets cost considerably a lot more than SD ones; in overall, cg is the second most expensive part of game production, straight after VA. You can blame the somewhat stagnant market for such situation. Space limitations. Huge assets take a lot of HDD space, thus resulting in a large game size. Even though we have digital distribution available nowadays, games are still being released on physical storage mediums, mostly DVD's; there's a limit on how much data can be stored (To be precise, it's ~4,2GB of actual data); since costs of physical release on a DL DVD's, not to mention BD's are expotentially higher, it's completely out of question for majority of japanese studios. This more or less means, a game has to fit a single standard DVD. Obsolete standards of work. A lot of companies and studios still rely on very old production standards; they use outdated formats and programming routines; they most often fail at grasping any modern possibilities to actually squish as much as possible from the modern tech and use it to the fullest potential. They use raw bitmaps instead of PNG files, rely on WAV formats instead of OGG Vorbis. This results in ultra high file sizes, virtually bloating assets, that wouldn't otherwise have a difference in case of more modern formats, especially when it comes to their quality. You'd be actually surprised - a well made, high quality, mid-long vn with HD assets and sound CAN actually easily fit under those 4,2GB; the problem is, japanese devs are way too thickheaded to understand it's not 90's anymore and there's a lot more possiblities nowadays.2 points

This is the latest game from the independent douijn circle Atelier773, which is best known on the west for their Manken! series; albeit first released in 2011, this one can be considered their most ambitious project so far. It kind of reminds Liar-Soft's Angel Bullet in terms of design. Personally, I haven't got the chance to read it yet (oh, the joys of evergrowing backlogs). Great news; I'm actually really tempted to pick it up.1 point

Kara No Shoujo 2 Discussion (Possible Spoilers)
Vorathiel reacted to The Setting Sun for a topic
I really enjoyed this one. The graphic style in this series I liked more than any other (yet), the story is well executed and the soundtrack complemented the atmosphere perfectly instead of just being BGM noise. As for the True End, it left me with that special gaping void you sometimes feel after reading a good story. Nuff said. Furthermore, the Obsession ending was a brilliant idea, I liked the careful-what-you-wish-for moment, and it really felt like a finger in the face dedicated to anyone expecting a happy end whatsoever. And, yeah, I see the biggest problems I've had with the story were already mentioned here- that children-from-the-same-mother-and-different-fathers-yet-still-identical-twins thing, and Karen's motives which were weak at best, and definitely not enough elaborated upon. If you go for the whodunit approach, give us the juicy details at least. All in all, KnS 2 scores pretty damn high in my book, and I'll be waiting for KnS 3 with bated breath, hoping Tokisaka doesn't die of lung cancer or go to Rokushiki for therapy in the meantime.1 point -

Koiken Otome Discussion and Poll
Dergonu reacted to Mr Poltroon for a topic
As everyone else is sharing their impressions as they go through, I shall do the same. General Impressions: The UI is incredibly slick. In fact, everything about the presentation is top notch. The options menu has everything I could want. The Translation, however, is not quite everything, although close. I don't mind the translation choices and, considering this was a free translation by a team of people who dedicated hours of their time toward this project, I welcome them. They certainly spice up the typical tropes the VN would otherwise be littered with. Furthermore, the translation itself is otherwise excellent. Everything that needs be conveyed is properly conveyed; everything makes sense as I read it, accuracy aside. If I ignore the typos, of which I've spotted close to a couple dozen over the course of the Common Route (and at least two lines without full stops!), then it leaves nothing to be desired. The choice system is interesting: There's typically three choices, and I can't always tell what they do. Coupled with the occasional binary (uh, fournary?) choice where we clearly select our heroine of choice's name, I wonder if the rest of the choices are merely there for flavour? Character-wise, I've already elaborated on the main heroines. Yuzu seems all around average, although I've come to notice she's awfully confident in her childhood friend status. Touko is not the perfect Kuudere, but she was close for most of the common route, and her current personality seems decent too. Akane seems samurai-like (mostly the way she sounds), which I enjoy, and when she's flustered she's also very cute, which I also highly value. Not a fan of what they were going for with mimicking animal ears with her uniform. Finally, I've come to a conclusion on Yves' personality. Her common sense is detached from a normal person's, and, harsh as she sounds, she mostly scolds other people for their sake or to vent her anger or sadness or disappointment. Otherwise, we have the gap between her usual confident and stereotypical rich-girl persona and her embarrassed or worried self; which I really like as well. People also mentioned the protagonist had no personality or that he served only to move the story along; clearly, I couldn't care less. The protagonist is entirely fine with me. Speaking of which, also very much a fan of the supporting cast -- especially Jin, the Teacher, Chiyoda and Oota. I like how Jin is so excitable, but gets sick from everything. Anything from the common cold, to low blood pressure, to extreme headaches after exercising minimal effort goes. The idea is hilarious and the character itself gets to play the straight man oftentimes. Chiyoda's laziness and minimal effort necessary policies, in addition to her "friendship" with Minato make her a wonderful character for me. Our views seems aligned. Oota seems respectable, if prideful, through and through. From a character I expected the worst out of, it was nice to see him be reasonable most of the time. As for the teacher, I wouldn't actually be interested in a route with her, though. To be frank, this teacher is more like an alternate reality version of Momoyo for me, where she grew up to be not quite as lecherous. The impressions thus far may seem positive, but there's one major flaw I have with it. Further explanation below. Common Route: Yves' Route (Up till first H-Scene):1 point -

VirginSmasher reacted to SpecterZ for a topic
I don't want to discourage you but, it is hard to find capable member(s) who will stick with the project from the beginning to the end. If you have translator, it will be easier for you to find member and keep your project alive. For example. My own team was downed to had only 1 translator for a year. Fortunately, that translator won't give up and keep the project alive long enough to pass them to another team.1 point -

Just speculation, but drawing the CG at a higher resolution doesn't necessarily mean that's the resolution they're meant to be viewed at. If you say, "I want to view these images at 1440p", then artists might feel compelled to draw at 4k. Just a possibility I'm imagining.1 point

Why do lots of VNs still run at such low resolutions?
Barktooth reacted to Suzu Fanatic for a topic
I was using a CRT monitor until at least 2011, when my old computer finally died. And since new vid cards supported hdmi - I switched over to my HDTV. I was a bit behind the times, but 4:3 was still pretty mainstream at "least" until 08-09. I notice the blur/pixalization as well in fullscreen, but not much choice atm, windowed is tiny otherwise~ (unless you mess with desktop reso on top of windowed mode, that actually works well - but it's a pain in the ass.1 point -
If actual fullscreen mode is giving you blur but windowed mode on a low-res desktop isn't, then that sounds like there are some driver settings you can change to fix that. Because both of those options should theoretically be doing the same thing, your graphics drivers should be handling the upscaling. Try tinkering around in your driver settings and see if you can force a different upscaling method. Many games use "virtual fullscreen" or "borderless windowed" mode however, which for 2D games that means that they're doing software scaling in-game. This upscaling is often worse than whatever upscaling your graphics card, driver software, or display does. So for games that give you an option, like the Majikoi series, I recommend you turn off virtual fullscreen or at least play around with the settings to see what looks better for you. Grisaia is actually a good example of this. Their software upscaling on the art looks okay but the text becomes heavily artifacted for me when using it, so I have to convince it my fullscreen res is the game's native res and go full screen with that in order to make it look decent.1 point

Onodera Punpun reacted to solidbatman for a topic
Just read whatever you wanna read. If you aren't enjoying it, or you aren't having fun, there is no need to force yourself to finish something just to finish it. That will lead to you hating the medium, and becoming a bitter, angry person when dealing with VNs. If for you, you cannot enjoy a VN after finishing a route because you feel like you're betraying them, so be it. Move on to the next one. Maybe after a few months, youll be able to go back and finish the original one.1 point -
