  1. Wow, I'm really 2 months away from being a two-year member. I usually forget how long I've been here until I look it up and think "damn, I'm way too old for this anime nonsense." But here we are: 1000 likes. As some of you might know by now, I don't care much about post counts so I waited to get a juicy like number to make this kind of thread. And it does seem as if I am entertaining you guys, looking at my Post/Like difference (the internal mechanics of our OT forum are obviously completely unrelated). Most of that probably stems from memeing too much, but I would like to think that my contributions in the discussion forums are insightful too. So, I hereby thank Fuwanovel as a whole for being better than reddit and our mod staff for their hard work in the fight against trolls, spam, random porn links and the occasional creepy otaku confession. Now, to the call-outs. Because everyone does it, I guess. @Suzu Fanatic and @Fred the Barber: I didn't place you two into your video roles randomly, you two are kind my "fanclub", if I can say that without looking like an asshole. Anyway, I appreciate all the support you two in particular give me for basically no reason at all. Pressing that green button actually makes me happy. @mitchhamilton, you get a deserved third spot in the fanclub, but you have been slacking lately. The Skype People, who give me an excuse to waste ours of my life with nothing but text chat: @Hanako, @Vokoca, @madvanced, @Dergonu, @Asonn, @Kawasumi, @Vongalaxy, @Kiriririri, @LinovaA(come back, you lazy adult!), @Zakamutt, @YarrakYarrak (no idea who you are here), @Yeah Way (I'm from Tibet, now you know), @sarayne, @Kurisu-Chan (don't let everything in life slap you down, it's bad for your health), @hsmsful, @Hymen, @Funyarinpa (look at me covering the desert in one go ) and some more which I probably forgot because they haven't been online for at least 2 hours \(°ω°)/ The Princess Evangile People: I honestly don't remember who all of you were, but I will never forget how much fun that damn thread was. @Eclipsed, @Zenophilious, @Tiagofvarela, @KosakiFag, @crunchytaco, @Flutterz, @Nosebleed : You guys were the fools who made me feel welcome here from the get-go. I don't care who the real Fuwa-oldguard is, you guys are my oldguard. @Fiddle: You make me depressed, because you are like me; just in funny. But then I read your posts and laugh the depression away. @Decay, @Rooke, @Kaguya: You three probably didn't expect this call out - since we have different opinions on pretty much everything - but you three are really smart and enjoy being around smart people. Even if I don't agree with them. @OriginalRen: You are not the best Reviewer in the world, but you are a great Entertainer. Play to your strengths! @CeruleanGamer: It's not like I care about Nee-san, I just felt like mentioning her. @Valmore: It's not like I care about Aniki, I just felt like mentioning him. @Palas and @nohman: You two are smart and pleasant company. Running into you on the board is always a pleasure. @TheguywholikesDearDrops: You know who you are, keep it up. @Elina-chan; You are the best waifu. Luv u bby <3 @all the translators who actually finish their projects; Texas Dice loves all of you. I would rob a bank for your sakes, you glorious bastards! Here we are, thanks for all the likes everyone! People not mentioned in the thread or shown in the video are free to complain. Now everyone can ask me whatever they want to ask. I shall answer in honest, unless I feel like lying.

  3. It was either going to be the lowest of my 9/10s or the highest of my 8/10s. Decided to give it the higher one because I really couldn't find anything lacking from it. It didn't have the special magic to get to 10, of course, but it didn't have any flaws to bring it down to an 8. I think you meant to say you're too young to enjoy nice things Yeah, definitely. I was really suspicious of this one from the get-go as well — something about the promo materials and the first impression of the art does make it look rather moecrappy, as you put it. But once I was in the game, I loved it; it was a genuinely great read, for me. Given the setting, I was pleased how little time it spent on infodumps (there was arguably one, that lasted about three lines?), and how much time it spent just fleshing out characters. In many ways, it really is like a more positive eden*. The characters are a lot more real than they are moe, by the way, especially Lucia. Which reminds me... Lucia, obviously. Is there any actual debate here?

  4. I'd suggest not challenging @Rooke to an RPG trivia challenge. It's like an unarmed child challenging a black-belt in karate wielding a machine gun. Even if you somehow manage to get close enough before he sprays you with bullets, he'll still pound you into the ground like a little girl.

  8. Versus all the other VNS out there, Liarsoft has not only a unique art style compared to pretty much every VN, but their writing is so...different too, it's hard to explain, but it comes across as more "Genuine", i/e, the way people think and talk. They do re-use alot of dialogue for dramatic effect, of course, but still, their VNs stand out from others because pretty much every other VN uses a similar art style / reads the same. When you read a Liarsoft VN, much like a Type-Moon VN, you -know- who made it. By their writing style & art style alone. I really appreciate them going the extra mile for stuff like that. Nitroplus, at least their older works, also has a consistent style to them.

  9. That is exactly what they said about Maitetsu during last month's live Q&A, which btw has been removed from YouTube. The reason I know this is I asked the question to which I was scoffed at and basically told to enjoy the game for the world and story and if it done well enough on Steam they'd think about it. Now I understand that content is controversial, but they knew what was in that before they decided to pick it up for publishing. Furthermore if they are willing to take that stand with that title, they would surely do the same with others down the line.

  10. Not to be contrary, but you are incorrect. Inside people made those exact allusions. On the old site, some members such as Koesti had made comments along those lines (around December '14)

  11. Man, you sound just like my squad leader. From personal experience, I'd like to say that I could never do what you just mentioned until I started getting mental health therapy. It's not easy dealing with anxiety issues, especially when if it escalates to PTSD. I started having that problem after joining the military, and let me tell you, Subaru is handling his issues way better than I did, lol. It's seriously hard to think about your actions when you're under so much pressure, especially when you're not taught how to think during your school years (which I can reasonably assume is his case as well). I'm much better off than I use to be, but only because I've been able to alienate myself from everything that was stressing me out with the help of other people. Subaru is very lucky to have Rem too; I didn't have anyone helping me with my anxiety at all (my squad hated me) while I was enlisted, and it was only after I was discharged for poor mental health that I started getting support from my family and psychologists. Sometimes that's what it takes to pull yourself together and start thinking about your actions more carefully. Here, check this out: How anxiety scrambles your brain and makes it hard to learn

  15. Well, this episode finally put an end to the "mini-arc" of despair. Still, I personally think it was completely worth it, every single episode, every single scene. Subaru needed actual development, not just getting a lil speech and boom, on the path to being a hero again. These episodes have done what his character needed, a truly rude wake up, and Rem completed the circle, making for meaningful character growth. Whatever happens in the episodes that are left, it'll now be believable for Subaru to go into "let's get shit done" mode and start making amends for all the shit that has been going on. And Subaru's speech about how useless he is was just superb. It also confirmed one of my early theories, that a big problem we all (and Subaru himself) forgot about was that there probably was a reason for him being a NEET and a hikikomori. And yep, confirmed it was, Subaru used to be a social outcast and a failure as a person. Which also gives an explanation as to why Subaru was having such an insanely bad time at getting himself together during his arc. Also, Rem best girl.

  16. The way I look at it, the 18+ price is the full price of the game. The cheaper all ages version is a discount due to cut content. When both are priced the same, I honestly have a bit of an issue, that the all ages version isn't cheaper.

  20. To reiterate yet again, the problem is the perceived inequity resulting from different audiences being treated differently. One group's discount is another group's tax. It doesn't matter whether you call it a "discount" for group 1 or a "tax" for group 2--it's both! The essential question here is whether the price differences are based in costs or whether the company is simply exploiting group 2's willingness to pay more for content than group 1. The problem is exacerbated if group 2 feels coerced to pay the higher price because the company says that if the version targeted at them doesn't sell, they'll be ignored in the future. The problem is further exacerbated if group 2 feels that it is a minority and its voice is being dismissed. It's not just this title. This is a pattern among Sekai Project releases, and to a lesser extent among English releases of Japanese eroge in general. To put it another way: imagine there is a single gas station in your town. The next nearest gas station is 20 miles away in a nearby city. Energy prices fall, but your town gas station refuses to lower the price, and says if you don't like it then go buy somewhere else. When you complain, the gas station owner (who also owns the city gas station) threatens to close and asks you how you'd like that. The city dwellers then mock you for being backwater rural troglodytes and tell you to go buy an electric car if you care so much.

  24. The one good thing to come out of the whole Karakara shitstorm yesterday was that I remembered Karakara exists. I picked it up last night, and finished it just now. It's the new record holder for shortest VN I've played (it took me maybe three hours?), but man, it was really good. It was kind of reminiscent of eden* but a lot more upbeat, which is a powerful combination for me. In addition to the story and characters, I absolutely loved the art and character design. To cap it off, the translation was great as well, which made for a nice change of pace after Corona Blossom. All in all, Karakara really nailed it on all fronts; one of the better games I've played in a while.

  26. I was in this position about a year and a half ago. I ended up choosing the PS Vita, and I don't regret it at all. I would recommend it to you as well. If possible, try to get one of the Vita's with the OLED screen. I haven't played the slim, but I know several people that have said the OLED screen is better than the one on the slim. The Vita also has a lot more VNs available on it too! There are some extremely good ones like the Danganronpa series, VLR, Steins;Gate and more. It is also worth noting that the Vita is region-free and the 3DS is not, so if there is a VN or another game that is only released in Japan, you can import it and play it very easily! If you want a 3DS game from another region, you would need a 3DS from that region. For reference in case this helps at all, here is a list of VNs for Vita in English (either available or coming soon). Here is a list of the ones available for 3DS. Also, FYI, Corpse Party and Corpse Party: Book of Shadows are compatible with the Vita. I have the whole series on mine. I also heard a rumour this month about 999 possibly coming out to the Vita, so let's hope it's true! Based on my experience making this same decision (I found myself making a lot of the same pros/cons as you) and what you are saying, I think the Vita would be a better choice for you, especially if you aren't too interested in the library besides Pokemon and Animal Crossing (Those were the exact same franchises I wanted it for too lol). Even though Sony might not be supporting the Vita too much, there are still a lot of games coming out for it! Depending on what your taste in games is, there might be a lot of great games for you! I hope I helped!

    Random VNs: Damekoi Part 1

It has been a while since I did a partial post on a VN, and most of the time I either do it out of enthusiasm or because I got a specific request for a path-by-path detailed report from a friend. In this case, it is because I ran out of time to finish Sekai de Ichiban Dame na Koi after I played through half the game and two of the paths. I ran out of time because my copy of Senren Banka, which I asked me friend to ship to me directly, arrived two days early. I wasn't expecting it until Tuesday at the earliest, and more likely I thought it would arrive on Friday, lol. I didn't have an excuse to keep playing Damekoi at that point, so I had to start on the VN of the Month. Damekoi is a type of VN we almost never see today... in a number of ways. First is that the protagonist is a full adult, without the need for the usual 'all characters are over eighteen' BS. Second is that he is a semi-hetare (despite the tags, calling him a total hetare is inaccurate, as he is actually quite capable in his limited field of capabilities), which has pretty much gone extinct as a protagonist type save for in those shota reverse-rape monster girl VNs that have gotten so popular in the last four years or so, lol. The third way is that it is pretty much the only VN I've played that uses the G-senjou story-split structure without making it seem like the side-heroines were neglected or the main storyline was left in the dust. Understand, I believe the G-senjou no Maou story structure is an integral flaw added to any VN that uses it. First, it is based off of there being a main storyline that is full canon. In the case of Aiyoku no Eustia it was Eustia's path, and everyone knows which one it was with G-senjou. That makes it an absolute necessity to maintain a certain consistency with the main storyline... but the fact is that most VN writers simply don't have the necessary multi-tasking capabilities to manage that many different threads in a consistent manner. As a result, you get massive inconsistency in the sub-heroine paths in most cases... and for someone like me, who demands consistency in heavy story VNs, this can go beyond annoyance to insane rage, regardless of how much I enjoyed things up to a point (it took me three years to forgive G-senjou, and I still haven't forgiven Eustia). I honestly don't know how they intend to solve things in this case. I've been playing the side heroine paths as they come up, and so I can only give you my 'in-progress' views of this game, which is considered a classic by many and has been one of the few 'gold stars' in my backlog full of crap and moege. To be blunt, this protagonist is a run-down salaryman in in his late twenties, who is kind-hearted but fundamentally unwise when it comes to preserving himself. He has an extremely low self-esteem despite being quite capable/talented, and he has the worst kind of bad luck. He, like more and more young people in this age in fully-industrialized nations, suffers from a sense of alienation from his fellow man, partially created by his alienation from his own family as a result of both of them constantly working and rarely coming home. This has resulted in a nice young man who nonetheless is utterly incapable of reading the people around him without as much as ten times more clues than anyone else would need, lol. The heroines are... interesting. Universally, they are the type of women who are attracted to men that 'need taking care of'. Their varying personalities and viewpoints on life only serve to emphasize this common element, and it frequently leads to conflicts and tension between them. The main heroine, Mitoko, is the daughter of a woman who ran off with a man on a whim, leaving her to take care of an ancient apartment in one of the wealthiest parts of town. Now, anyone with a lick of common sense would instantly sell that prime real-estate at an inflated price and put up a newer apartment in a somewhat cheaper location. However, expecting that kind of common-sense attitude out of any of the heroines in this VN when it comes to their own affairs (as opposed to the protagonist's, lol) is somewhat... ridiculous. Mitoko has that puppy-love thing going for the protagonist almost from the beginning, though she is the oldest type of tsundere (before the term was coined and Zero no Tsukaima patternized even the speech of the archetype) who beats up on the protagonist whenever he does something wrong but fundamentally is positive toward him. Unfortunately for Mitoko, Osamu isn't exactly perceptive when it comes to the emotions of others, so he takes her at face value most of the time, hahaha. The first two heroines - and the ones whose paths I finished - are Kaya and Himeo. Kaya is a somewhat lazy office lady who is a bit younger than the protagonist. She falls head over heels for him after seeing him at work, and she is rather straightforward about her affections, actively trying to turn him into a freeloader she'll take care of for the rest of his life. Himeo is the daughter of the president of a major real-estate conglomerate with a penchant for charitable causes and an unreasonably intense affection for Mitoko that manifests itself in some seriously screwy ways, though it is sincere. Both paths have to deal with Mitoko's jealousy, the fact that the protagonist's first priority is always going to be Mitoko, and the instabilities of the heroines involved. The protagonist's emotions toward Mitoko are definitely fatherly, and their intensity combines with his sense of duty to make it impossible for him to make them his first priority outside of certain moments. I've honestly enjoyed this VN up until now, and I think it would be a good read for someone who is looking for something 'different'. I can also tell why this never solidified as a genre archetype, as most of the people reading VNs in Japan are the type of people who would hate using a Japanese salaryman as their perspective of the story, lol.
